I followed the very helpful instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933615
And removed all the apks, put on the cpu manager, etc.
I'm very pleased the battery life is much improved, and the "Cell Standby" process is gone.
However, the "Phone Idle" feature is still present! How can I get rid of this? I wonder, could this actually be "System Idle", and just mislabeled as "Phone Idle"?
Thanks in advance.

Do you guys have WIFI process listed under "Battery use" consumption list? I have it missing on my SGS, but it's there on my Milestone and Hero.
It wasn't listed as separated process using default JF3 firmware and it's the same since I've flashed JG5.
Any suggestions are welcome =)
just install an App Killer program, those will show up in there
Unfortunately, it doesn't make WIFI process show up in the list.
Do you have it shown all the time when you go into Battery use?
the background?
my battery life has been great up till today - today it was down to 15% by mid afternoon, and if anything my useage was lower than the past few days. I could hit the "about phone > status and see battery status dropping 5-7% every 30 - 40 minutes
checking "running apps" under "applications didn't show me anything unusual
only thing different, i download "Bing maps" last night, didn't see any difference from google, so un-installed it, but noticed when i downloaded it there was another "pkg installer" download that i didn't understand
is there an app that will show me what's really running in the background?
I use WatchDog Lite, which does a pretty good job of alerting me when an app is hogging too much CPU in the background. I think its worth giving a whirl.
thanks
and adding unnecessary wordage so this will post
I've removed these (below) seemingly without any adverse impact.
camera.apk
MMS.apk
Phone.apk
TelephonyProvider.apk
Are there any other apks that the Nook CANNOT use, and could be removed without impacting the device? Like looking at battery use - Phone Idle is the 2nd most active... Can I rip that out anywhere?
My apologies in advance if there is a thread of this (for the Nook) - just post the URL and I'll read that.
There was actually a fair bit of experimentation about this a while back and IIRC it was found that removing the apps didn't affect battery life at all, since they had no hardware to power up to do anything to, but did cause apps to dissapear from the market instead.

The only advantage I've found from removing default apps (besides the 10 MB or so of flash that is saved...) is that the Nook boots up faster. Once booted I've seen no differences except the expected FC if you try to launch an app that requires something that you removed.

Even if it doesn't effect battery life, I tend to remove things that are of no use on the Nook. My list of removed apk's include:
Camera.apk
Cyanbread.apk
Email.apk (I use Gmail)
FileManager.apk (I use Root Explorer)
LiveWallpapers.apk
LiveWallpapersPicker.apk
MagicSmokeWallpapers.apk
Mms.apk
Phone.apk
Protips.apk
SoundRecorder.apk
TelephonyProvider.apk
ThemeChooser.apk
ThemeManager.apk
VisualizationWallpapers.apk
VoiceDialer.apk
After moving these to my SD card for safe keeping should anything go awry, I reboot immediately and haven't experienced any issues at all. If you don't reboot pronto, it can go into a force close loop, but after a reboot, everything's fine.

And in answer to this question, "Phone Idle" is just what the O/S calls it when your device isn't doing anything else (but is still "awake"). Replace the word "Phone" with the word "Device", and think about your car idling, and you'll get the picture.
Unfortunately they come back when you flash an update.

In order to increase battery life? As far as anyone can tell, removing APKs doesn't really make your battery last any longer, as the O/S doesn't use them unless called upon to do so. (If, for example, phone.apk was eating your battery, then you would see "Cell Standby" on the Battery Use screen.) Removing them (refer to the list ChrisDDD posted) can make the Nook boot up faster, but if some application tries to access them and they aren't there, then you can get Force Close errors.
A large "Phone Idle" percentage just means that most of your battery was taken up by your Nook sitting there, awake, waiting for you to do something with it. It is actually the lowest battery drain status you can have, except for Deep Sleep. If your Nook is not going into Deep Sleep, then you'll want to read through the other threads on this issue for ideas on how to fix that. (Turning Wifi turn off when the screen is off seems to help me.)

Not if you remove then from the /system/app folder in the ROM .zip file before you flash it. Grap 7-zip and have at it.
Since rooting my Nook touch I have had it on for 6 days. I checked the battery usage and it tells me that "cell standby" is using 87% of the battery and "phone idle" is using 12%.
Anyone ideas on how to disable those functions?
Perhaps airplane mode would disable those, but I don't know how to enter airplane mode. I do have nook color tools installed.
Thanks
I tried the airplane mode as someone suggested but i still saw cell standby and phone idle.

I actually ended up unrooting precisely due to this... I'm researching and trying to figure out a way to root w/o installing things that consider the nook as a phone... A custom rom is being produced on this thread.... Hopefully it will be a lot more close to a reader than a phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1208024
Has Anyone found a solution for the cell-stand-by problem?
You can delete /system/app/phone.apk and telephonyprovider.apk, then phone idle will disappear.

"failed on 'Phone.apk' - Cross-device link"
I delete it in rootexplorer.
I'm wondering, Phone.apk and TelephonyProvider.apk are already installed in an unrooted nook, aren't they ?
BTW, there is a script here for the Nook Color, it should work for the Nook 2.
But I don't know if it will have a real effect on battery life or not ...
Thanks!

I just changed the file extensions, as mentioned in the "[script] remove cell service" thread, also seems to work.
IMO, both "cell standby" and "phone idle" and just about all actions that nook does when it is in sleep mode. Removing these apk's however helps just a bit because there are none useless phone apps running in background, but there still will be "cell standby" thing in battery stats.

I just made the change, and actually, it's "Phone idle" that's still in the stats. "Cell standby" which was using about three times as much juice as "Wi-fi" and "Phone idle" combined, is now gone, and so I'm hopeful for improved battery life.
I think, BTW, that the "Phone" in "Phone idle" doesn't refer to the actual phone app--the name probably actually means "Device idle".
OK, after a day of testing (and contrary to what others have said), I see a dramatic change in battery usage. Last night, when I got home from work, my Nook Touch was at about 90% (or maybe that was at work), and then, by midnight, it had drained to 60%, while idle the whole time. I then renamed the two APK files, recharged it overnight, and just checked again a bit before midnight, and it's at 98%.
This thread seems forgoten. I used Linux to access to /system/app of my unrooted nook. I removed many apk files ( Shop, Social, Phone, TtsService..) and put coolreader.apk then carefully watch my nook. The result is amazing, I can use Coolreader to read. Moreover. My battery was enhanced, It lost approximately 2% for a day of sleeping.

Is it safe to do this on a rooted?
Do I need something besides a file explorer and renaming the files extensions?
Awaiting your kind reply,

At least, now, I can read ebook and mangas in my nook. Other functions ( web, games..), I haven't tested.
I do not use and root method posted in XDA, I use linux to access in /system/app and modify files. :fingers-crossed:

Depends on what you want to do with your device, I guess some of these (Shop? Bn*? etc) might be needed to connect to the B&N store.
For reference, my list is:

Calculator
CloudService
DemoMode
DeviceManager
DeviceRegistrator
Gallery
GenieWidget

And you can find in these forums some other variations on the theme.
I've tried ES explorer and Rootexplorer and I couldn't rename or delete any apk in system. The permission from superuser was granted. What should i do?
Good Day all,
I have benefitted greatly from Google and XDA. So I thought I would provide a consolidated way of saving our battery's grace from Android System demonic drain.
I am running Euphoria with Furnace, and I had loads of Gapps installed.
I tried multiple attempts over a 3 days period and did many researches back and forth. And it came down to these few main culprits:
1. Android Location Services
2. Google Play Services
3. Qualcomm Location Services
4. Google Now Launcher
5. Unwanted Sync
Tools I have used to assist in this matter.
1. Disable Service - here
2. Greenify
3. Privacy Guard (should be in built in most custom roms)
4. Titanium Backup
Basically the highest causing drain came from Google Play Services and Qualcomm Location Services. These items persistently wakes the phone up and runs on the background. Using greenify on there further cause issues as greenify tries to hibernate these services over and over again, making this a self-made draining routine.
I followed this thread on Google Play Services drain fix and used the Privacy Guard to perform those tricks. I ran through ALL Google Related Apps and as long as "Keep Awake", "Wake up" or "Auto Start" is enabled, I disabled them. I also look through apps I suspect were waking phone up by looking at the last activation of those events (Keep Awake, Wake Up, Auto Start).
Next I followed this thread on Guide to disable google play internal services using Disable Service app. I also took the opportunity to look at both 3rd party apps and system apps to see if there are services that could be disabled. I disabled Apex Notifier as I realize I didn't needed its service.
Then the next sneaky culprit was the Qualcomm Location Services. Even though I froze them with Titanium Backup, they persist in the system. So making a backup of them, I uninstalled them completely. Hasn't caused me any issue with GPS or Maps. They are namely, com.qualcomm.location and com.qualcomm.services.location. Both appeared as LocationServices 1.0 on Titanium Backup.
I went ahead to Greenify many Google Apps, namely Google App, Google Play Store, Google Services Framework, Google+. I also Greenify many apps that Greenify suggested would slow system down or appear to run in the background which I have no use for.
Lastly I uninstalled Google Now Launcher as it was persistently coming up as alternative home launcher even though I froze it. And I also went through settings of apps to make sure sync were turn off. I only kept Calender and Contacts and Gmail Sync on.
Now I have reduced Android System from 34% to 2% and increased my SOT from 2++ hours to 4++ hours at least. Not an out of earth SOT, but I believe that's decent.
Hope I helped and I wish you all the best in your endeavour to reduce Android System Drain. Cheers.
Thanks bro
Will try and give feedback asap

It should be found in settings page, "Privacy".
I know that this guide is meant for CM based ROMs but I said to myself "ehh, what the hell" and I tried it on my Cloudy 2.2 and the results were horrible. Had to fully charge my device twice in order to go through 22 hours and a total of 2h of screen on time which consisted mostly of browsing and messaging. Wakelock Detector told me that the device was mostly asleep and everything was normal in the Batter Usage menu. Usually I get around 18-20h on a full charge with 2,5-3h SoT. Maybe the locations tweeks were not liked by my Tasker app and caused a huge battery drain, although it didn't appear that much as a wakelock trigger.
I am wondering if the problem was caused by Tasker or the stock ROM itself, but badly I do not have the time now to tweak around and I am reverting back to my previous configuration.

Try using GSam battery monitor to find out the real culprit. I used that to boil down to the final two irritants - Qualcomm LocationServices.
Really enjoying the app.
