What do you do to maximize your battery? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Wondering what all you guys do/use to maximize your battery life.
I am on power saver, auto brightness, using greenify, and froze bloatware so it couldn't run in background. I've read mentions of juice defender. Does that really help? I know there are roms that are supposed to help too (I'm mdl rooted and tw recovery installed and that's it).
Tia for sharing your tips.

Just curious how much overall time, screen on are you getting and what's your usage ?
You probably want to look for betterbatterystats and see if any wakelocks are eating the battery..

I'm on it a great deal since I really don't use our computer anymore. I get 7-10 hours depending on if I have a busy day or not. I got 6 on my iPhone 5 because I was on that all the time too.

im on mf3 and using mdob rom using safestrap. major MAJOR increase in battery life plus in addition to titanium backup, greenify and wakelock detector.

I am on one of the GPE ROMs, I don't use NFC or Bluetooth, generally I have GPS off as well, and I sit at 80% after probably an hour of screen time and 5hr screen off. I almost always have 100% brightness.

I am on samsung stock. My battery only used to last 6-8 hours during the day
After 24 hours I generally have 40% battery left.
I switched off notifications for most apps except for Gmail and Whatsapp from Settings -> More -> Application Manager -> gmail -> Show notifications
Also switched off Samsung Link and Samsung Push from Settings -> More -> Application Manager
Set the screen timeout to 15 seconds, auto brightness

I froze all Samsung boat so don't have that but I did turn off notifications for everything but Gmail, voxer and chompsms.

Safestrapped - using Graviton ROM
Greenify - to hibernate all but messages, primary weather/clock widget, chaton, etc (stuff that needs to be running)
Lux - to adjust screen brightness based on light in the current area - in a dark room, I dont need it to be 100%, only outside do I need 100%
Hibernate is not like freezing in Titanium Backup, it is stopping a process (and its wakelocks) and unloading it from memory.
Greenify does this (checking of applications that need to be hibernated) when the screen is off. Since the programs (say FireFox with flash enabled looking at a very animated site) is not running in the background, your battery life is increased. Also, as it is unloaded from memory, your phone feels 'snappier'.
Now if you go nuts and greenify all apps, such as messaging you will not get any message unless you start your messaging program. If you greenify a clock, it will look like it is stuck.
Lux uses the light sensors on you phone to determine how bright of a room you are in. For example, if I am in my living room at 11 am, it is very bright in there. I have Lux bump up my brightness to 50%. At 8 pm, it is pretty dark, 50% is a little too much so I have Lux drop it down to 20%. And if I am outside I have Lux push it to 100%.
Your screen is usually your biggest energy consumer
I am happy to say I get 13-18 hours of life from my phone with middle to heavy use with games, and about 5 hours of talk on LTE (which drops down) because I do not have great reception where I live
Good luck finding your combo to give you better battery life

[Q] Less Battery Drain?

Battery drAin last night 10% and alarm didnt sound.
Now have 5%, and drain 1% each 3 or 4 min, its amazing... (mode ironic off).
What can I do?
No wifi or data plan activated, only phone in 3g mode...
Download TaskKiller from the market and kill any task you aint using. Then fully charge and keep the memuse low

weird as I'm using the same setup as you are, only 3G activated and my battery goes 16 hours with 93% left.
Till today with an hour and a half of game play, my battery went to 49% after 36 hours unplugged.
The battery is amazing, you just need yo restart and check what's activating in background
Do you have whatsapp running?
I'm not using any task killers by the way
Sent from my LT15i using XDA Premium App
Task killers are not good for what you are talking about here. Don't just sit there kill every task you see. That could actually hurt your battery performance because the kernel will just start those apps and processes right back up again taking cycles from the cpu, and juice from your battery
Besides, Gingerbread has it's own task killer, so why clutter your system with more unnecessary apps?
What you need to do is open your battery stats and find what exactly is running and destroying your battery. Im most certain its only one thing, and just stop that one process.

23:00 - 00:00: Only wifi turn on. Twitter, facebook, playing snes emulator, also fpse psx emulator. My baterry drain 60% to 50%.
00:00: All radios turn off. Very impressed 23:00 to 00:00 because only 10% of battery usage on heavy mobile working. Let´s see what happened when I go to bed.
00:00 - 7:30: With 50% of battery, alarm don´t sound because ALL BATTERY HAVE DISSAPEARED, in other words, 0% of battery. Seven hours after, with all radios off (airplane mode on), xperia in inactive mode, and don´t have battery. I´m really disapointed, scared, angry,...
CONCLUSIONS:
If I turn mobile to inactive, each 5 minutes, 1% of battery drain. With 50% and 7:30 hours of inactivity, no batery to my xperia.
So please.
What Can I do? Love this phone is my second android (i´m bored using iphone), but this unnormal draining of my battery, scares me. I can´t complete faith with xperia.
One more thing.
Before goint to sleep I´ve installed Go launcher, and no plugins because this problem happens to me since first day, and want to be secure not was my fault.

there are several causes to this
It could be an application running wildly in background
Or
Your battery is defective
I recommend you re-installing your firmware and note the applications you use
Avoid task killers and any app that updates itself every 10 minutes or so ( Facebook twitter.. etc ) let them update every couple of hours or manually
The battery in Xperia play is amazing so it's sad what's happening with you

I solved problem, and really impressed with battery performance.
Have 80% with all day wifi on, playing emulators, and using whatsupp, gmail...
What i do:
Task Manager de Rhythm Software = close apps when turn off screen.
SystemPanel App - Task Manager = cpu usage, close apps
MySettings app
Im using Power control plus, and deleted Extended Control Plus.
My battery now, is better than other smartphones like defy or nexus, which I´ve tried.

no that is different, that is running services not running apps. Samsung has a default task killer on their phones, which is very good and shows actual running apps and allows you to kill them. i used to have it on my galaxy s i miss it.
there is only one app i have found on the market that works in the same way, that is; Active Apps. all other task killers are a load of **** and really do nothing.

well you dont have to hold down the home button to access it. you download it through samsung apps and can use it like a normal app. dont know about you, but i found it very useful and used it very often. for example; when you quit the web browser, it never really closes. go into samsung task killer and you can see it running and can stop it and close it FULLY from there. again, any app you use the "home button" to exit out off, will remain running in the background. i always used the samsung task killer to end these apps properly.
the only other app, as i've said, that works like this is Active Apps. all other task killers are such of load of ****.
I have gotten as much as 7 hours straight gameplay out of this device !
So battery life is exellent just kill tasks that are un-needed. ( f.e. google maps , media server , etc...)
As for standby mode I can squeeze in 2 days I guess
Still playing to much so kinda hard to confirm
Battery life is excellent for me.
I started yesterday on 100%.
- Took it in the bathroom and watched some youtube while i had my bath (ye ye i know !)
- Played 1-2 hours worth of gaming
- Phone went on standby for another 2-3 hours while i went out, did some shopping and some random texting
- Came home had another 1 hour roughly gaming and web surfing
- Text some more to say i'm going round my mates house to watch the boxing
- Spent 4-5 hours up my mates house, showing him the phone, google earth, streetview, maps, emulators, games, everything
- Came home late at night, left my phone on the floor OFF from charge and woke up this morning with 7% battery power left.
Considering how much i used it, i think that's dam good.
Same battery problem here too. Recieved at 10am. Charged by 1pm, dead at 10pm with little use really. Some downloading, browsing, few texts and 30 secs of phone calls.
Advanced task killer seems to have done nothing. Any tips guys, defective battery maybe?
try active apps.
advance task killer, task killer advance, yada yada yada are all full of ****.
also put a shortcut for "Running Services" on your homescreen. periodly check this to end services like "get games" or "Event management" or "TimeScape" or "Google Maps", etc.

Tried that, active apps isn't showing any apps that are using any cpu time at all, just the same stuff advanced task killer shows for using ram, which i continually kill. This is with all signals barring normal signal turned off, i'm getting a 1% drain every 10 mins at the moment.
The battery monitor is showing cell standby, phone idle and display as the main things eating the battery. Will give it until the end of the day then call orange for a new battery as there's obviously something wrong here.
fishbow, I recommended you hard reset, because me happens same thing.
I discovered extended controls was my problem.
In your case, maybe anything.

Battery drain problem resolved!!!

I have been one of the unlucky ones experiencing serious / ridiculous battery drain. I was losing around 10-15% an hour just on idle....
With minimal use I was having to recharge everyday after just 8-9 hours.
So what have I done?
Last night I flashed the latest version of Lightning ROM, available on these forums. Not only is it an excellent ROM, but it appears to have fixed the issue. The only other thing I have changed is to uninstall the Beautiful Widgets App. No other changes.
After nearly 4 hours battery is showing 91%, to compare I have normally been on 60% after 4 hours.
Hope this helps someone!

But, how has been the use? Data On? 2G/3G? etc..
do we need another thread for this? I had the same issue, all I did was to factory reset and install only the necessary things. Now, I'm pretty much on par with you and I still have beautiful widget on (I just can't live without it )
But it's all about the usage scenario - I can have 99% after 4hrs as well as below 50% depending on this.
I'm on stock KE7, phone on for 21 hours and still have 72% left.
sync on, 3g on. weather updating every 3hrs.
Dont see what the problem is with stock....?!?!?
The main consuming part is the screen.

There is just no consistency here and Google need to find a way to get to grips with this. I am using exactly the same usage pattern as before (data on, 3 hour updates, lattitude) and am now receiving 75% increase in battery life by simply flashing a different ROM.
You cannot imagine how frustrating it is, hearing how wonderful other people's battery life is when you are struggling to get half a day.
The reason for another thread is because I'm so relieved and wanted to share

Have a great battery life with the following settings:
1. rooted
2. deleted all not necessary apps with root explorer or if not shure freezed in Titanium Backup

3. disabled automatic background transactions in settings
4. disabled all animations in settings (keep it simple)
5. use a dark background image / also for lockscreen
6. using a light launcher (zeam launcher gives definetely bet battery live compare ADW Launcher EX or Go Launcher EX)
7. recharge battery when it's empty for around 8 hours (i.e. at night)
8. Disable HSDPA and just use 3G (no speed difference but battery) with *#301279#
9.Thumbnails and some database's could get corrupted making the media scanner running berserk, resulting in battery drain.
Delete the following:
dbdata/databases/com.android.providers.media
dbdata/databases/com.cooliris.media
And clear the thumbnails folders on sd cards.thanks nitr8

why to"keep it simple" ?
knock yourself out!!! with a grate pice of technology

P.S. Incase your wondering... Yes it does work

Horrible battery life out of nowhere

So all of a sudden my battery life is absolutely horrible. The other day I hadn't even touched the thing after taking it off the charger 5 hrs earlier and it was at 45%. As far as I know nothings changed besides updating Apps... Could it be one? If so, how do I figure out which? I don't use facebook and don't have any Apps running in the background, at least they aren't showing up in the status bar. Any suggestions?
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
What is Battery Status showing?
I had Facebook go nuts the last few days and the new update yesterday seems to spend much less time in Facebook once I was able to access to turn Notifications and auto refresh off.
Likely is an app you can disable all suspect apps in App info on ICS if you are running an ICS ROM on your Nexus S (each app at a time disable) and see if Battery improves and narrow down which specific app is the issue. If you are on 2.X then you may want to use an App like Titanium Backup to freeze a suspect app and see how battery life goes the rest of the day.
Under settings? Shows display at 65% and several others with minimal usage, less than 7%. I am not using ics yet. I don't use facebook so I know that's not the problem.
I know about freezing Apps in titanium but how do I narrow down the suspect list? Right now it's all of them.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
Can you post a breakdown of, say, the top 10 apps and their usage from the battery usage screen?
OR
If you can, take a screenshot with your phone. If youre running CM or other modded roms, you may already have the option in the power menu. If not, there's plenty of apps that will take screenshots, assuming you're rooted.
It may be a recently installed app hogging the CPU clock
Try installing app like SetCPU (No need to have a rooted phone to track CPU load)
Check if the CPU runs 1000 MHZ constantly. It should be 100 when idle.
If so, try un-istalling the latest apps u installed one by one and ypu can detect the faulty app. Including recently updated apps.
I recently noticed my battery life is horrible as well. The battery usage screen shows that Google Maps is taking up 45% of my battery!!!!
Last time I opened Maps was several days ago. It was also updated about a week ago; so it all lines up.
Spare Parts app will break down cpu/ram usage by application. Install it and check to see which app is out of control.

Saving battery life?

Hello I am wondering what the best ways to save battery life are. I have every extra feature turned off except Bluetooth but am still only getting 4 hours screen on time. I have lux auto brightness set to -10 to 35 most of the day, unless I go out in the sun much. But, I'm still not getting all that great of screen on times. I currently have 2:12 screen on, been on battery for about 6:30 and I'm at 46 percent battery. Screen usage is about 65 percent of the total.
Is something wrong here or is that normal? I have all apps shut off. Should I just root it and install a new Rom? Have not felt the need to root but if it'll save a bit of battery I might.

- Use power saving mode, it underclocks the processor and you probably won't feel it.
- Remove bloatware:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2307355
- Turn off mobile data when you don't need it, or use JuiceDefender to do it for you.
- Turn off sync, this is very meaningful. Facebook, Gmail, google services all take a huge bunch of battery since they keep syncing all the time.
- To track down battery killers, get BetterBatteryStats, GSam Battery Monitor.
Turn off Google Now and Samsungs Smart features if you want to save some battery at the expense of some features.

Greenify?

If i can Root my 9005 - i intend to use Greenify,, as my battery is very poor (stock i'm lucky if i get 8-9 hours light/moderate use)
Is it a rated app,, can i expect big battery gains?
Thanks.
Depends which apps you have installed and how you use them. For example facebook drains much battery so you coukd greenify the app but if you do so you wont recive notifications anymore from it aslong you arent actively using the app.
In other words it prevents apps from wacking up.
As someone who already always manually force-closed all running apps, all I noticed was an increase in free time, as greenify is faster at it.
I didnt notice any increase in battery life.
If you don't manually force-close your apps, it'll probably have a bigger impact.

It seems to help mine. I run it with the Xposed Module that adds features that still preserve the notifications from Facebook, etc. I also have it set to boost mode for it to work faster.
I also haven't noticed much of an improvement. Many people swear it's a miracle app, for me it only turns off notifications.
True battery saver: green power payed version (on Google play). Set the phone to sync once at 4h and turn off wifi and mobile data on screen off. Awesome app, I tell you.

I do all that myself manually.... Sync always off and I turn Wifi or mobile data on when I need it, and turn it off when I'm done.
Cheaper than buying an app, too.
The real saver for me has been LUX. With our climate and the time I spend indoors, a brightness between -20% and 4% is more than sufficient. Now THAT saves battery! With brightness at 4, I loose 1% per 15 minutes whilst browsing! With it at 50, 1% per 5 minutes. At 100%, 1% per 90 seconds.
And when i use it in the dark, - 70%. I barely lose any charge at all whilst being an insomniac. It's been 20 minutes, still on 55% charge, which it also was 20 minutes ago. WiFi on, eWeatherHD update on, Tapatalk, Facebook and Firefox in use.
(if websites used less of that eyesore white, it'd save even more.)
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk 2
I would suggest to remove some bloatware comes with the ROM / firmware itself.
It safes much battery though.
As well as turn on location, and on it when you want to use it.
And I freeze some apps which is running in background (which greenify can't detect it), which I don't use it as well.
and change to a good kernel.
it will really have a good deep sleep, never up if I never wake it up.
the apps running in background is only messenger apps like whatsapp, viber, and that kind of stuff. I never freeze this one and never put it on greenify as well.
So far so good.

I might look into that app. I go with the "free" lol DIY manual turn data/wifi off thing too, but sometimes I forget and I see wifi on when I had turned it off or so I thought. some apps are worth the couple dollars or so and I might very well get this one. Thanks for the tip on it. I like too that it automatically turns on wifi or data such as when you go to read an email or something.
You can also give these a try:
- Deep Sleep Battery Saver
- Juice Defender
- Tasker (You can configure it to auomate nearly anything, from 'turn on wifi at this and this gps location' to 'shut up completely between 2200 and 0800'. Does a lot of non-battery related things too, like launch a specific app when plugging in headset, or automatically move photo's from internal to SD.)

Juice defender is a dead project and 2 years old. Greenpower is basically the same app but still supported.

Hey thanks! I did go ahead with Green Power yesterday and I have to say I notice enough of a difference for sure. My usage has been with a phone call, check messages, several texts, check email a few times and some light surfing. i'm at 89% at 8 hours pulled off 100% charge and would have been lower for sure into 70s at best. definitely notice.
