Horrible battery life out of nowhere - Nexus S General

So all of a sudden my battery life is absolutely horrible. The other day I hadn't even touched the thing after taking it off the charger 5 hrs earlier and it was at 45%. As far as I know nothings changed besides updating Apps... Could it be one? If so, how do I figure out which? I don't use facebook and don't have any Apps running in the background, at least they aren't showing up in the status bar. Any suggestions?
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App

What is Battery Status showing?
I had Facebook go nuts the last few days and the new update yesterday seems to spend much less time in Facebook once I was able to access to turn Notifications and auto refresh off.
Likely is an app you can disable all suspect apps in App info on ICS if you are running an ICS ROM on your Nexus S (each app at a time disable) and see if Battery improves and narrow down which specific app is the issue. If you are on 2.X then you may want to use an App like Titanium Backup to freeze a suspect app and see how battery life goes the rest of the day.

Under settings? Shows display at 65% and several others with minimal usage, less than 7%. I am not using ics yet. I don't use facebook so I know that's not the problem.
I know about freezing Apps in titanium but how do I narrow down the suspect list? Right now it's all of them.

Can you post a breakdown of, say, the top 10 apps and their usage from the battery usage screen?
OR
If you can, take a screenshot with your phone. If youre running CM or other modded roms, you may already have the option in the power menu. If not, there's plenty of apps that will take screenshots, assuming you're rooted.

It may be a recently installed app hogging the CPU clock
Try installing app like SetCPU (No need to have a rooted phone to track CPU load)
Check if the CPU runs 1000 MHZ constantly. It should be 100 when idle.
If so, try un-istalling the latest apps u installed one by one and ypu can detect the faulty app. Including recently updated apps.

I recently noticed my battery life is horrible as well. The battery usage screen shows that Google Maps is taking up 45% of my battery!!!!
Last time I opened Maps was several days ago. It was also updated about a week ago; so it all lines up.

Spare Parts app will break down cpu/ram usage by application. Install it and check to see which app is out of control.

Battery draining pretty fast

Don't know if its just me but anyone else getting crazy battery drainage? I mean I use the phone but not enough where it will drop from 85% to 75% in a matter of 5 minutes. Very weird. I have my phone oc'ed to 1.4 mhz on kings conservative module. Any ideas?
Sent from my HTC Vision G2
I've been getting at least 12 hours. Im not using a module, or bluetooth, but I'm on Wifi all the time. GPS is typically on as well.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using Tapatalk
Try removing King's module.. I'm on 1.2 Ghz and I haven't seen any difference in battery consumption when at stock speeds as well..
Mines been unpluged for 13 hours and I'm still at 37%.
It'll last me about over 12 hours and up regardless just weird how it dropped 10% in 5 mins like that.

it calculates use/time so the percentage is a simple variable that will change as soon as you take a idle phone and start using it.
Don't know if this has anything to do with it but I did install a task killer from the market with the red android icon. Maybe this has something to do with it?

Probably best that you remove that.
The problem with task killers is that when you end those processes most of them automatically start back up which of course uses more power to do so. So say for example you get one of those automatic task killers then all day long your phone is ending processes and then restarting them.
Froyo has sort of a built in task killer which you can use to close apps that aren't working probably or that you notice are draining your battery.
You shouldn't use automatic task killers, as others have already stated above me. Another reason is that the task killers themselves are wasting and using system resources and cpu cycles.
What I generally do to keep my phone's unnecessary tasks down and such is to manually end tasks and keep a note which tasks are always popping back up. Once I've determined those processes/services, I would generally put them on the ignore list and have a widget placed on my homescreen so I may tap on it whenever I get a chance, or pass by it, killing off the tasks that I know don't make a difference on my daily use of the phone.
My ignore list consists of:
My Account
3G Watchdog
Voice Dialer
Beautiful Widgets
Widgetlocker
eBuddy
News Weather
BatteryTime
Astrid Tasks
Clock
MixZing
Google Voice
Gmail
Photobucket -- Because it doesn't give up after you've killed it.
You're going to take a battery hit overclocking. Other than that I'd look at what's running at any given time, and everything that you've got installed. There really isn't a need for a task killer. And if you're adept enough to use a module, you might want to look into disabling applications that you don't use via adb; if you haven't already.
To put it another way the more you're running, the faster your battery's going to drain.
Im Oc'ed to 1.4GHz and running all kinds of widgets and i text and call all day.
No issues at all. Both my orig phone and now my replacement phone.
So I'd have to check under running services under applications ? I uninstalled the task killer.
Sent from my HTC Vision G2
I am overclocked at 1.5ghz and my phone last all day. I think the two main things that attribute to this are:
1. I have a profile on SetCpu that underclocks my phone to 245mhz when the screen is off
2. I used this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809231 to disable alot of the stock apps that load automatically on the phone (Finance, Qik, Photobucket, Amazon Mp3 etc)
If you do want to try out the 2nd option send me a PM. I'm not sure if you are familiar with the application "Gscript" but it allows you to input a script and have it activate at the touch of a button instead of inputting lines in "Terminal Emulator". Basically, one click and all the BS apps are gone. Do you have the VISIONary root?
Yeah I do. Just charged my phone and it dropped from 97% to 77% in like a half hour. Something is def up. NOT NORMAL. And this was stock. No OC.
Anyone have a list of all the bloatware so I can disable them via terminal. Don't feel like looking thru pm list packages. Lol. Yes, call me lazy.
On a side note just looked at the temp of the battery its saying 101 f. Wtf?!
Sent from my HTC Vision G2
I just got the G2 yesterday to try out.
I charged the phone to 100% today and put it into Airplane mode (my office doesn't get reception), quit all the apps using ATK (froyo version), and killed potential network-hogging apps in Running Services menu. My battery went down to 83% without being touched in a matter of 30-60 minutes.
There's no custom OS/root/overclocking being done here. Anyone else find this a bit strange? Neither my Nexus One or Vibrant deplete this quickly. I also understand the whole battery calibration, but damn!
This seemed to help me. Try pulling out the battery from the phone for 1 min then pop it back in and power up. For some reason that helped. Phones at 50% with heavy use and I took it off the charger at 530am and its now 3pm

I to have battery issues...not to sure what it is. Just curious how some people are getting more than 10 hours of battery life. I too use Juice Defender and although at start is said 1.31...it now is going to 1.10. How do you all get such high battery life? I get at most from (what I call heavy use, twitter gtalk, txt, web, games) about a single work day which is 8 to 9 hours. Ideas...?

Really Bad Battery Problem. Help.

past 2-4 days.... my nexus just dies suddenly with the battery drained. checking history with system panel shows that the cpu usage just suddenly shoots up to 100%! and i dont know what app is causing it.
just updated locale and extended controls + a lot of other apps. but my main main suspects are locale and extended controls (since EC posted that they are having problems with the update on the nexus)
any ideas? any other apps i could use to target and isolate the rogue app that drains my battery?
get a task manager and see ?
also, it may just be time for a new battery. ebay. $13 shipped, 2400 mah

System Panel HAS a history, and you can see which apps are using CPU, so have you done that? Is the phone getting hot? It would if the CPU was running 100%. And even at that, it wouldn't immediately die, I've never exactly tried to see how long 100% cpu utilization takes to drain the battery but I'd have to guess it's at least 2-3 hours.

guess the rogue app just turns on and eats up all the juice at some point in time. weird.

Do you have SetCPU or anything else enabled with a performance-oriented governor or similar? That would likely keep the CPU pegged at the max without really doing anything.
Try disabling as many applications as you can until you can pinpoint which one is misbehaving.
Same Problem Here
My phone is experiencing atrocious battery life, and so is a friend of mine's. We are both on FRG83D, and it seems to have been the trigger for the problem. He is on AT&T and I am on T-Mo. My wife also has an N1 on FRG83D on T-Mo, but her phone is not having the problem. Her phone is set up very Vanilla, my friend and I have more system altering stuff on ours but nothing too wild, and none of the phones have ever been rooted. The two problem phones both use Launcher Pro and Extended Controls, I am not sure what else we have in common in our apps. I installed System Panel today to try and figure out what is happening, but I still can't find an obvious culprit. While the phone is sitting on the dock charging the CPU seems to be idling under 10% and when I pock it up and look at System Panel you can watch the CPU spike to the upper ranges if you scroll the screen but otherwise it is idling under 10%. The display is always the highest on battery usage and the worst app shows as System Panel, but that is basically what I expect to see. I am ready to start removing apps to see if I can get it back to normal unless anyone has an idea of how to better diagnose the issue.
I had this issue a while ago. "system" was taking up all my CPU, and I couldn't find any details about what was really causing the problem. I couldn't remember how I finally found out about the problem (I think I spent a night reading the logcat to see what was wrong). I couldn't even use the phone, it became horribly sluggish, and battery went flat in mere hours. Turns out, I had a bad picture or two in my SD Card, and the media indexer went in a loop trying to interpret the files. For some weird reasons, the same files got Windows Explorer "confused" too.
Try to remove or format your SD card and see if it's doing the same. I know it's more of an anecdote than a real known issue, but it won't hurt trying
oh wow i was hoping someone was having the same problem... left it overnight unplugged so far so good. now im really beginning to think its extended controls. took out the widget and replaced it with the stock one for now.
IDLING at 10% CPU usage??? Mine idle at 0% if nothing is active. Average 3% over time.
You guys should watch and see what's using hte most CPU, SystemPanel can do it if you look at the history (free for a week or 10 days or something, or buy it to keep the function), but also look at Spare Parts, you can install it from the market. It gives you visibility to a few more Android settings/info menus which you can see which apps are keeping the system awake etc, it can help pinpoint what's going on.
Something very bad is happening. When you all figure it out, report back.
When I look at system panel the little CPU circle graph stays at 100% for the most part. I don't understand if its accurate.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Do you have the app 'Extended Control' installed? The last update is very buggy and is causing bad battery life and broke the camera app on the N1. Check comments on the market. They are working on a fix.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Looks like Extended Controls
I did some testing and Extended Controls does appear to be the culprit. Dev seems to be aware, hopefully they get it sorted.
Edit-Overnight and battery life is back to normal with Extended Controls uninstalled. I didn't suspect it at first because they had already released an update after FRG83D, but apparently it was broken worse than they knew. I hope they fix it soon, I like the app.

It obviously should not sit at 100%, look and see what app is using CPU, it ain't rocket science.. Mine idles around 3% with my apps, mainly K9 and Tasker, weather etc..
Step 1: Call HTC's exclusive Nexus One Phone number
1-888-216-4736
Step 2: Tell the rep your battery isn't holding charge. (Possibly tell him your earphones blew as well, if you lost them like I did )
Step 3: Wait 3 days for the battery (and headphones?) to make it to your door.
You don't even have to ship your old battery back!
Step 4: ???
Step 5: PROFIT!

I solved my battery drain problem

I was having a problem with fast battery drain on my SGS2. I would get 15 hours if lucky from a full charge with light - moderate use. My most recent charge looks like it has doubled the time.
What did I change? I did a factory reset and manually installed all my apps, NOT using titanium backup. I had used titanium backup to restore apps only, that were from my previous phone (Nexus1). I have never used titanium backup for system settings, only apps, but it seems even that is unreliable. I've now stopped using titanium backup completely.

Will it matter if it's i9100 to i9100, or just any other phone to i9100?
Well... Ive done several hard resets , because I though I had a network problem , and I many of those I didnt install titanium or even root the device and the battery life was the same.

If you notice a higher battery drainage than normal then you have to see what application you've installed lately. If you can't find it then the only option is to do a Hard Reset. That has worked for me, IF your battery is drained by some app which you've installed lately.
Regards.
I am sure battery drain has to do with the apps we installed and the settings we use.
We are in a fortunate situation that my wife and I have both S II, hers is 2 days older from the same shop, so I assume both devices are from the same batch. Hence no hardware difference.
I installed a lot app and played with lots of settings and if my wife like it, she "demand" to install it on hers too, so hers is a more controlled env.
For some reason my battery drains a lot quicker than hers. I still have to find out which application / settings cause this.
For an experiment, we did not use both phones for a full day (very difficult), so all the drain is due to background processes.
There are several dips in the graph, but those are explicitly usage of the phone for a while. The big last drop on her battery was because she was playing a game for more than 3 hrs.
PS.
A collegue of mine (also an SII) had his battery run out quickly, until he found out his culprit: Settings->Location and security->Use wireless network was ON.
You can see the effect of this as the "almost horizontal bar" in my wife's battery when we turned it off.
thx for info man.
What would happen if i turn that off? I want to try this to preserve my batt life. Thanks!

I wonder if having 3rd party launchers like launcher pro drains the battery quicker. I installed launcher pro without ever having really tested the battery life of the phone with the standard launcher. Has anyone here tested the difference, if any, of the battery life of standard v market app launchers?

The screen shot on the left is your phone correct? It looks like something is waking your phone up and leaving it in an awake state for far too long. Your graph represents over a day's time and I see those huge chunks of time where your screen is off but your phone is awake; I'd say some program is what do they call it *wakelock* every now and then.

Morel likely to be a bad app, or a bad app setting causing the app not to close properly then drain power than the mere fact you restored it via titanium.

Turning off data packet doesn't allow any application going on line (unless you have your wifi on) and cannot download e-mails, synchronize anything, etc..
This saves your battery a lot.

Of course the updates are included. There should be an app/good optimized app which will allow us to close the apps and thus Auto Sync and Background Data to off when we are not using them, especially at bed time. The in built task manager's RAM Clearance function is crap and frankly I haven't found an app which will optimize the RAM without force losing the apps/widgets. Tried 'Gemini App' but I doubt! This 'Sync' stuff is the main responsible part of high battery drain.

Battery draining problems

Hiya,
Ever since I got my phone replacement (Brand New in Box from Bell) I noticed that the battery drains 10% per hour regardless of my current clock speeds.
I'm only listening my music.
My mobile data is on.
Wifi is off.
I have ES Task Manager set to autokill when screen off
Details:
ROM- CyanogenMod Nightly #140
CPU Clock speeds- 245~368 Mhz
CPU Governer- ON DEMAND
VM Heap Size- 48m
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Just making sure I'm reading you right, you have es task manager killing apps? Android 2.2 doesn't have any need for that, and it may hurt your battery life.
First thing to check is to make sure any apps that sync (weather) aren't syncing every 15min, and change them to every few hours. If that still doesn't work, try a different battery. May just have a bad one.
Sent from my T-mobile G2 using Tapatalk
Go into spare parts > battery history > partial wake usage
This will show apps that are running in the background that are using the battery. If there are any 'rogue' apps that aren't behaving properly, this should show it. You can also use Watchdog Lite from the Market (free) to monitor CPU usage of applications to try and find what is running down your battery.
Although, if you are listening to music, 10% drain per hour doesn't sound too much out of the ordinary.
Update: I stopped my music for roughly 45 minutes and it seems that music doesn't affect it much. It still drains.

Yea good call. And get rid of that task killer! No need for that, especially in CM7.
Having similar problems suddenly. I was getting nearly 24 hours of battery life with normal usage, but in the last 4-5 days the phone drains to death while in standby. Searched here and online and couldn't find anything other than the normal check apps, etc. But I haven't changed anything in months, and usage isn't showing anything out of the ordinary.
Is it possible my battery is hosed? Android OS says battery health is still "good", and outside of screen-off it seems to drain normally. I even left it on for about 30 minutes and lost 1%. But overnight it went from 100% to 1% in just short of 7 hours with absolutely no use. So bizarre...

Didn't help me.
Only turning on airplane mode helped me.
I think it's a TMO infrastructure/network problem of some sort, honestly. Maybe a bug with the deployment of 2.3?
Yeah didn't help me either.
I had my phone fully charged when i made the post earlier and it is now dead.
Hopefully they shed some light on this soon.
OK good I'm not crazy
One thing I noticed last night after draining and wiping battery stats again is when I woke up it said Dialer took up 49% of the battery usage? I charged to full with the phone off, turned it on and it sat on the nightstand until this morning. Received 2 texts during that time, no phone calls made or received, and my alarm is set at 6am on it and went off. Battery went from 100% to 19% in this state.
This is frustrating. I read the T-Mo thread and it's seeming more like network issues? Anyone else have this problem here on XDA?
EDIT: Customer Support is useless. Insistent that forum posts "mean nothing" and I need to pay them $20 to replace the phone. Also they have no logged issues on this, even though I've seen multiple posts of people who've called in. Sigh.
Also been experiencing the exact same problem with CM13X and CM151. I had uninstalled maps, which didn't improve anything, so I reinstalled it and it appears to be okay now
So far 1h16m since full charge after uninstalling Maps completely and rebooting and clearing cache, and battery is still 100% while sitting on my desk here at work. Also Dialer isn't showing 50% usage either. Hmmm.

[Q] Poor battery life

I'm really disappointed by the battery life of my a500. It lasts no more than 2 days with Wifi disabled when display is off. I use it only 1 hour a day ...
This tablet is just 6 month old ... do you have the same problems ?
Do you think it could be returned under warranty ?
If I don't use mine much and I have WLAN off it lasts for about 2 weeks. So no, I do not have that issue.
Have you installed a custom ROM?
Have you checked what applications you have running in the background?
If you're running stock ROM, is it still 3.0.1 or have you updated?
That's not good
I get at least 6 hours continuous use from mine,I'd certainly take it back if you rule out something causing unusual battery drain.
I had similar problem with my a100. No matter how I had my sync settings set or what apps I removed it was still getting horrible battery life. Did a factory reset and battery life went back to how it should have been.
On my a500 however, battery has been great. I usually get 2 and a half days without turning off wifi or changing a thing, and with moderate usage. You may want to check sync settings for all of your apps.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium

Seriously, like was advised earlier.
Things that drain the battery'
Live Wallpaper
Display settings
Stupid apps like battery savers, task monitors/killers
GPS
WIFi, especially if it is constantly searching for a connection
Sync's (mail, fb, twitter, just about any social app. Google sync) all of these should be off, or set to a more reasonable time.
Apps that update automatically. Should be set to off in the app settings.

Just because the tab is asleep, doesn't mean it stops checking these things when to time requires. Especially if you have an a501 with internal 3g.
Well, I'm also new to Android, but I got some experience. You should use an app call BetterBatteryStat (thread available here, just google that name and "xda developers").
I bet that your wifi is not off when screen off. That setting is useless. On stock 3.2.1, it works. But on both Honeylicious and Thor's ROM, wifi just stay on. Sometime, the tablet stay awake while screen off also.
I suggest using BetterBatteryStat to view detail log of your screen on time and wifi on time vs sleep time. That app also give you some idea about which app is preventing your tablet from sleeping.
Also try TitaniumBackup PRO to freeze some of the included app (like Photo Browser 3D, if you don't use it). I don't accept any app which I rarely use to have a running service (check in setting\application).
So far I have 2 days 11 hours off the charger and am at 65% remaining. This isn't just with no use... Ive used it quite a bit to web browse and check pulse / xda along with not turning wifi off, gps on(shouldnt use much battery anyway) and syncing apps set to 4-6 hours. It's not rooted and has a ton of apps loaded on it, though I try not to have any apps that look like they were made too quickly.

You were right ! A software was using the battery. After the factory reset, the battery lasts much longer. Since sunday i'm still at 77%.

Aye, that's what I thought. Be more careful what you install and get one or another task manager application so you can check for such more easily.
