Samsung stopped development for SII - Galaxy S II General

Hi Guys,
SamMobile Tweet Samsung has stopped developement for the Galaxy SII and Galaxy Note.. No Android update

Oh well, kinda expected for this to happen.
Unfortunately with the Exynos code unavailable, most likely community development will also die down bit by bit.

What we want is an OFFICIAL statement regarding the issue, not this.

Sammobile was the one to say that 4.2.2 would be last on s2.
Now they say something different
My point - dun try until its official

I doubt the thieves and liars over at Samsung will even have the balls to post an official statement. They will just remain silent.
But we will remember this. 4.2 came out on 13 November 2012. 4.2.2 on 11 February 2013. So NOT #2years.

SGS IV now out, what you expected?! They should develop new software for new phones and new phones. I know SGS II the most complete phone in the world (in my opinion) but this is business

Waiting for my Nexus 7 2013 to arrive and i'll keep my SGS2 only for phone calls, sms and tehering to N7 if needed. Then i'll wait for Nexus 5 or something similar. Never going to buy a Samsung device again.

Even if they did, it could be that theyll release exynos source code now..
Costum Roms where better anyway

They had to explain why Galaxy S wasn't getting ICS:
Official statement:
http://samsungtomorrow.com/2043
Some translation on
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_explains_why_galaxy_s_and_tab_70_wont_get_android_ics-news-3567.php
So they will have to jump on and explain the issue if Galaxy SII is staying on 4.1.2. Honestly, any reason they could give will be ridiculous and they will probably damage their image more in terms of money that what they would waste developing a 4.3 update and stopping there.
Also, actually both Galaxy SII and Nexus S started on 2.3 and Nexus S died on 4.1.2. If Galaxy SII gets abandoned at 4.1.2 also, Samsung will lose a great chance to overcome a Nexus in terms of updates (and if Samsung seeks for something, its for statements such as those).
In any logical terms killing Galaxy S2 would damage Samsung for than updating it..

I think that after finding all the bugs on there HW, couple of mounth ago, they won't publish there cpu code because there must be so much holes ' bus and traps that there reputaion will damge even more

Well it was nice while it lasted. I'm grateful to Gokhanmoral, Chainfire, the Cyanogenmod team and all the other dedicated developers that enriched our SII experience for these past two years.
With the promising Nexus 5 around the corner I'll be looking forward to see more from y'all!

If Samsung don't release a new update for S2, they will buy more new devices. It is all about business not because our S2 isn't capable to run (4.3). I think Nexus is a best alternative to Samsung.

Couldn't understand

There is lots of 4.4 roms in the forum. are they fake. i'm using one of them and it works flawles... So i think MY SGS2 IS CAPABLE OF 4.4 :fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:

I really don't care as long as they provide exynos documentation for the devs at XDA. Already running 4.4.2 without their help. Will keep it till it boots for the last time even if development stops.

Saw from your signature your SII setup, Dorimx kernel + SlimSaber is stable, any improvement you noticed/recommend? Tnx

Galaxy S2 confirmed get Android 4.0

Samsung Italy has reportedly confirmed which of the Korean company’s Android devices will receive an Ice Cream Sandwich update, with models such as the Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 each supposedly in line for a 4.0 upgrade. The Italian arm of the firm listed the GSII and the Tab 10.1, HDBlog claims, along with the Galaxy Note, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Tab 7.7 and Tab 7.0 Plus as all being eligible for a tasty frozen treat. However, don’t expect it any time soon.
According to the report, the updates won’t begin until Q2 2012, potentially six months after Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus goes on sale. Samsung confirmed to us last night at the kick-off of the Galaxy Note European Tour that the oversized smartphone would get Android 4.0, as reported in our Galaxy Note vs Galaxy Nexus hands-on, but said that, since the company had been working closely with Google on ICS, they expected to beat competitors to the market with upgrades for existing devices.
(Source :http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-android-4-0-ics-updates-in-2012-reportedly-detailed-28191699/)
I hope, we won't have to wait that long...
Waiting 6m+ would be a joke in my opinion - the GS2 is the leading current Android phone in performance and sales, for it to take so long to get 4.0 makes the whole platform seem a bit weak seeing as by then we'll presumably be in the midst of hype building for iphone 5 which would a) have new features ics doesn't have and b) copy anything worthwhile from ics.
I don't believe extended Nexus exclusivity does either Google or Samsung any favours at all...
i don't like to wait.
i read somewhere that it wont get 4.0 until after the galaxy s3 is released.
me too think so. Galaxy S got gingerbread update only after S2 released. So.... I doubt it might be the bad wait more news coming soon...
But anyway v will get it wont v.
Or if v need it faster CM will always be there to help us

I don't see what the big deal with ICS is. What will my phone do or do better with that operating system that it can't do now.

Just about everything. It doesn't bring many new features, but it optimizes the old ones and makes the whole experience better.
I'm eagerly waiting for ICS in my SGSII
You wont be waiting that long if you're a flash fan. No doubt there will be leaks etc before the official release.

For me, is the joysticks support. I have so many usb joysticks, but none of them are working right now on GingerBread.
Initially I heard ICS for S2 coming next year only, thats fine looking at time required to test stability but throwing the it in Q2 is ridiculous!

Won't Samsung have had ics to develop the galaxy nexus? If so wouldn't they have been developing the upgrades for their phones, negotiated as part of the deal to make the nexus phone?
I think galaxy S2 will be the first to receive the update before any other device, firstly Samsung and Google worked extremely closely on some of the software aspects of ICS namely the Camera app and the launcher itself, also the Galaxy nexus share some hardware components with the Galaxy S2.
Also lets face it the Galaxy nexus is underwhelming specs-wise except the Screen of course (Even though it's Pentile).
Don't forget that Samsung also want to sell a LOT of their nexus device and making it the only device in their range to have ics makes complete business sense. They've sold lots of sgs2 already, time for the nexus.
I know it may be a little frustrating for us, but as someone has already said, we'll get it much earlier via a leaked ROM.

Q2 2012? F**k me...
What are people doing with their phones to make them slow and desperately need ICS? Am I missing a free hookers and drugs app?
I agree we will get within weeks of the launch whether it be from Samsung or an AOSP ROM doesn't bother me because the one main gripe I have with AOSP ROM's is the lack of hardware acceleration and the absolutely terrible camera app, Samsung's Touchwiz is hardware accelerated which is why it is so smooth.
It does make perfect business sense to delay ICS for the GS2 but people don't buy the "Google Phone" because of its specifications they buy it because its the "Google Phone" the one advantage of doing this is the quick updates, other than that there are far better devices, the Galaxy Nexus isn't even released yet and its already outclassed by devices such as ours that have been out for over 6 months.
ICS and the screen are the only saving graces of the Galaxy Nexus. needless to say it will still sell extremely well because as I mentioned its the "Google Phone".

Samsung details Jelly Bean upgrade roadmap - Galaxy Tab 10.1/10.1v is not on the list

Our beloved tablet Galaxy 10.1/10.1.v never going to get official JB upgrade by Samsung!
Source Link:
http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-details-jelly-bean-upgrade-roadmap-and-its-not-all-good-24248943/
I know this is not Android development post, but I just want to make sure our beloved developers know the news, and they are the only ones left now that can bring fully functional JB ROMs to our tablet. I really hope they can start spending more time on JB ROM development.
Your justification/reason for posting this in the development section is definitely not sufficient.
I am disappointed by Samsung not upgrading GT 10.1 for three reasons
1. GT 10.1 was released *after* GS2, and GS2 gets JB.
2. GT 2 10.1 is so similar to GT 10.1, that if Samsung just pays a little more effort, they can upgrade GT 10.1, too.
3. GT 10.1 was a flagship device, just last year.
Probably it is because GT 10.1 did not sell well as Samsung expected, due to iPad or all that Apple legal stuff. Well, but I can still enjoy GT 10.1 as it is (4.0). And I hope Samsung would release a bigger and faster one (like 12 inch or something). Then I would sell GT 10.1 cheaply and move on to that device.
Well it is ok, i hate touchwiz as a lot of people and we have good developers that will bring CM10 full functionally, but it is mean that probably we will have problems with drivers for futures updates.
start a facebook and twitter protest along with a youtube video
I bet they will pay attention. At the least force them to release the code so others can develop it.
The points made above are very valid.
I though part of the Google agreement was devices had to be upgradeable for up to 18 months for something like that.
You think a company like Samsung would have learned from Microsoft to make their devices and software work for all of their hardware just like installing MS Windows across different brands.

That is what Google stated at I/O 2011. So this makes me wonder... 18 months from when the GTab 10.1 I/O released (March 2011) or when it released in the US (June 2011), international (July 2011;not sure cause I didn't pay attention to that release). We are within that window when they said that JB will release in Q4 for the listed devices. We are DEFINITELY in that window from when JB was announced.
That will teach us, samsung is fast abandoning devices as well as releasing them. Note to self, next time stick to everything nexus.

I agree about touchwiz, but you have to think like this: they need to release JB, so that our developer can get all the required drivers for camera and other stuff. This makes development much faster. If you check current Alpha/Experimental CM10 JB ROMs, front cam not working.
I felt really bad when I read the news, because I still really like my Galaxy Tab 10.1 even if it is 1 year old.

Yes but i think 3.1 kernel its only for P7500 i have the P7510 wifi version, someplace i look for an experimental kernel 3.1 but microphone doesnt work.
Samsung are truly morons with this crap. The Tab was my last chance with them and they just blew it.. This was their 3rd strike. My 2 year old Nexus S 4G with 512mb of RAM gets an official JB upgrade from Google (and runs great) yet the tab with a dual core and 1gb of RAM Samsung decide to skip over. Google is all about getting the most out of a product and Samsung (who ironically makes the Nexus S) is all about getting the most out of your wallet.
I had a hunch this was going to happen, but I'm still annoyed. Not so much because I can't just root, etc..... but the fact that they've given the finger to those that bought it while they support older products still. Samsung was even present when Google announced the "Android Update Alliance". Um........... atleast give us working drivers, etc.

The 3.1 kernel Samsung released is for both P7500 and P7510. If you're running official ICS now, you're using 3.1 kernel.
Figured as much.
But, my Tab with ICS and Nova launcher absolutely rocks, so to be honest, I'm not really that disappointed.

it is official news from Samsung. I just need to find the official press release link and post here. They did not say no JB for Galaxy Tab 10.1, but they did NOT included it on their JB road-map for this year and next year, so this should tell you something, unless Samsung decides to include it at last minute.
The only comments seen publically are from sites other than samsun. Sammobile is not an official site and their source was not samsung either. Suggest you all calm down. Besides, it would be like expecting win7to run on a win 95 computer expecting updates for ever more

Official 4.2 update discussion.

Hi.
I saw official launch of mega series on samsung site.
Mega 5.8 and 6.3 are using dual core processor with 1 gb of ram. ( 1.5 gb on gsmarena)
They are launched with 4.2.2.
So by this I can assume that sammy will roll out 4.2.2 for note as well. Though wait will be long.
What's your take on this. Any views?

Hardware is NOT an issue.
Sammobile received news from an insider a few months ago that the Galaxy S2 and the Galaxy Note should both be getting updates to 4.2.2.
Their insider isn't always right though, so this could just be a load of bollocks but still. You never know...
Another faulty update process made with no interest and no real testing at all? Thanks, but no thanks. I'll stick to 4.1.2 after a clean flash, which will surely be the peak for this device in terms of performance/functionality/estability.
But of course will be interesting for the dev community, if we all live enough to see it...

While I hope we can get one or two more performance updates (especially regarding the S-Note application!) plus an updated unlock screen, I don't believe the phone needs anything else. My aging N7000 has served me well, especially after a fresh battery replacement.
I doubt that the update will be of any use if it isn't released any time soon. This fall the Note will have been available for 2 years. That's a very long life circle for a phone. Very soon people's Notes will start to die, one after another. And by the time the update will be published there will be hardly any Notes left
Sent from my revived Galaxy Note
4.2 should come for our Note: Galaxy S4 Mini and Galaxy Tab 3 have a dual core proccesor and 1 gb RAM Specs. Samsung sold more than 15 millon of GT N7000 so, its not an unknow phone like the Galaxy Fame or others and they will bring still a lot of support. I guess the 2014 will be the last year of updates for our Note. Dont wait to a major update this year, they first need to finish updating the 4.1.2 to the whole world, then will start the 4.2 updates. You might wait to a November/December leak...
Sorry my bad english
I do not beleive for any future update. SAM forget about his childs after the year. I faced with this already with my Galaxy Tab 10.1. Spec is the same like Note. But last update comes more then year ago, it was 4.0.4
The Note WILL receive Android 4.2.2. It will, however, be the last official update that it'll receive.
There's no date for the update. Samsung will update both the Note II and the S3 before, so when they receive it, we can expect it in about a month or two.

My statement, as you say, is based on history and facts.
First off, SamMobile already confirmed that the Note and the S2 will receive Android 4.2.2, and that it'll be the last official update. Do a simple search and you'll confirm it. They have the track record to back this.
Source: http://www.sammobile.com/2013/03/18...roid-5-0-for-the-galaxy-s-iii-galaxy-note-ii/
Then, this is exactly the same situation that happened with 4.1.1 and 4.1.2.
Rest assured, we'll receive 4.2.2. It'll come after the Note 2 and the S3, and before the Red Sox wins another WS.

However, SamMobile said some devices will get Android 5.0, while this android build wasn't showed by Google or even leaked. So we dont know if SamMobile's source was saying the truth or not. We dont know if 4.2.2 will be the last update, if will get S4 UI, if will be more faster, we dont know ANYTHING about this. The best thing we can do right now is look at the S3 leaked 4.2.2 firmware, because i think it will be the same rom that could have in our phones. I expect we will have the update (or the leak) in November or December.

4.1.2 or 4.2.2........It doesn't matter much until and unless samsung stabalizes the update...........they released 4.1.2 update so late...and it was not smooth and performance wise it's so power hungry.
Also the touchwhiz interface is so slow with 4.1.2 update. So samsung must stabalize it before jumping it to 4.2.2
Well note still is a very capable phone. But its true that it has almost served its purpose. Spending time to make its update will need more workforce and distraction from focusing on newer devices. We will also get bore from it soon. But i still am happy to have this device and it was a nice decision to opt for this device. Though it will get the 4.2.2, but not the KLP...

[RUMORS] Galaxy S2 might not get Android 4.2

Sammobile:
Galaxy S2 might not get Android 4.2 update, due to “adjustment problems with TouchWiz”

Bad news for all of us... :crying: :crying: :crying:
Samsung Touchwiz crap
Not going to flash even if they release 4.3. I prefer to be on CM. Much more smooth and better battery life.
Good said Modej,
I also using AOKP but with some touchwiz features 1. Because I like it touchwiz launcher.
And Second I want in AOKP that be another lockscreen but I think it's not possible :/
We only need egl blobs and kernel source from GS3 4.3 to run CM10.2 well (not stable but pretty decent like CM10.1).

Agree and disagree with your comment. 100% agree with the smoothness part but sammy 4.1.2 roms with a good stock kernel offer the best battery life (Up to 7hrs screen on time, my record was 6 hrs screen-on time spread over about 1 day)
What a lame excuse for not updating.

Unfortunately, based on what other brands are doing, we cannot blame so much Samsung. We got last official update few weeks ago for a device which is in the market from beginning of 2011. Of course who bought the device one year after it was in the market (like me!) got a better price but having more or less one year of software support and counting mostly on XDA community to keep the device alive.
We should blame who has promised 18 months of updates but failed to keep their promises (I know HTC for example).
Most of the cases there are not technical reasons not updating devices but just marketing. I would be happy having 24 months as minimum software support.
Correct me if Im wrong but I havent read any on that article that it is official? So why go on rampage blaming Samsung on the statement which might be a fallacy? You will just stress yourself.

It's just that once a rumor (a sensitive one here), starts up, it catches up pretty fast.
there are about 5-6 articles by now about this on various websites, each quoting eachother as references.. XD
Let's just wait because even S3 hasn't received 4.2 yet, and as always Samsung updates the newest first!

Exactly.
It's just that once a rumor (a sensitive one here), starts up, it catches up pretty fast.

I saw something about samsung skip the 4.2 and the 4.3 release directly to s3 and s2, do not ask me where, but I've been looking around, and also already be next to launch a test build for s3

4.3 seems a little far fetched. ....considering the aging of our device .I doubt Samsung will push any further updates for us ...
And its so silly. They said that s2+ will get the update bcuz it has more power than S2 (seems lik a marketing strategy 2 me)...
On tge the latest report it says Samsung owns 47% of all android devices.i think out of those 30% represents S2, S3 & S4 .
S2 still has a very large scale of users , its a shame Samsung is leaving us in the dark..
Well I guess its time to move on to S3 , S4 , N4 or H One ...

But dont blame the Manufacturers too much
Everyone should think back to the Times where Android wasnt there
Symbian times for Example... Updates came pretty Slow BUT they came and where everytime pretty Bugfree and with Really Good Performance and all that
The Update Floods on the Android OS doesnt makes it any Easyer for the Manufacturers nor the Devs i think
Google makes everything very Complicated for everyone, and i am sure that all Manufacturers first gonna bring out the newest versions to the newest Phones
Why ...Pfff Because they Have to keep The NEW things more up to date then the Old .
Well I know other nonnexus android manufacturers are much worse. I'm not even sure the HTC Sensation and Xperia arc of 2011 received 4.1.2 yet.
But seriously samsung can't compare with those manufacturers as they are not as big as samsung.
Samsung should see how apple gives software updates to old phones as apple is the only manufacturer as big as samsung and hence their main competitor.

Here is where you miss the point.
Apple has like what 5 devices to support?
3GS, 4, 4S, 5
Whereas Samsung has a portfolio the size of an Apple Farm.. XD
So they focus on the newer models which is natural, to boost their sales and try to keep up with others.
And while they do, Google keeps launching updates after updates.
One such example is,
Galaxy S Advance, It was supposed to get ICS but by the time it's turn came, ICS was outdated, so Samsung directly gave it GB to JB.
I think we will get our 4.2 update somewhere around my birthday in Nov'13

I think what samsung should instead do is to give the best support for those who paid more for the premium Galaxy S line and note line, otherwise their image will be no better than their mid range and budget phones line.
It's their own fault since the beginning actually. Their flagships so far is S, S2, S3, S4, Note 1 and Note 2. However, each flagship got so many variants. For example, the S4 has 14 variants including the zoom and active according to wikipedia.
Samsung might be able to convince people to buy their product. However, I'm afraid they can't convince people to buy their product for the second time.

Not exactly looking forward whether Samsung will push an update for us but they've got a point there. I think Samsung's not particularly concerned about customer satisfaction which means just like the others said that Samsung's likely to update the newer devices that's still in the market to increase their sales.

Quite disappointed

As you may ask know, Android 4.4 is out and yet no official 4.2 yet for our note 10.1talk more of 4.4. Samsung gradually becoming as arrogant as Apple.. Lol
I'm starting to regret buying this device.. What do all think?

Honestly I buy a device as what it is unless specifically told it will receive x in x months baring a software hitch that needs addressed. Every update is simply a bonus. If I want more I generally turn to the dev community for that something extra. Samsung I think said note 10.1 would get 4.2 I think and I like that but when they get around to it is up to them really. If updates are super important the nexus devices get them all quick. I don't really view it as arrogance so much as we have allocated this many men and this much funds for these updates and when they are ready you'll get them as it's an extra feature to an already finished product.

1. Android 4.4 was announced, it is not "out"
2. Do your homework next time, samsung has a habit of late updates, its a continuing trend with them. Want fast updates? Grab a nexus device.

As another said, announced but not out. I'm use a rom and I can't complain. I have no functionality missing and can complete all my tasks. An update really wouldn't improve that. If it was a security flaw or a device crippling problem I'd have a need for a patch more urgently. Really not a reason to regret buying a device.
Not interested if an updates comes i will use it .
Pointless jumping on the continual why have we not got xxx update yet .

Not this again.. Google's own statistic shows that the majority of users do not care one bit about which version of the software they are using. Another big part of the users with newer versions simply got a prompt and clicked on it.
I was all worked up when my dad's Note 1 got the JB treatment. You know my dad's reaction when he saw JB (jumping from Gingerbread mind you)? "What's the difference?".
The people who want the latest version of Android are mostly fans of technology. And most of them usually just go with newer devices or don't rely on stock software.
So I'm not at all surprised that Samsung is lazy with its updates. There's no real pressure for them and since they are primarily a mass manufacturer then what do they care if 1 000 000 people (probably a lot less) around the world are feeling left out when they probably sell that many devices (total volume) every few days.
The good part is - Android is still open, so you can always jump to a ROM and get the new software if you so wish. I myself am now spoiled by some of Samsung's apps and features so as long as it's Jelly Bean, I'm happy and it does what I've bought the device to do. IF we get 4.4 - great. It should have been 5.0, but again - who cares besides geeks like us.
4.3 should come out after october when they update the S3 and S4, Samsung noted that the note 10.1 would get the next major android update at the time it was thought it would be 5.0 but now we see it is 4.4. I'm worried now that we will never get 5.0 on the 10.1, but that will be many months down the line.

I'm more concerned about fixing bugs. Fix the bugs first and if another version comes along, great -- but still fix the bugs.
Wich makes me ask: what is the best (= most effective) way of reporting bugs so they might get fixed?
I'm not really waiting for 4.3 or 4.4 new features but there's at least one bug (USB host connection) I'd desperately want to have fixed.
It's just business 101.
Samsung is not going to release 4.2.2/4.3 for the Note 10.1 or even the Note 2 for that matter with the impending release of the Note 3 and Note 10.1 2013 Model.
It would hurt potential sales and upgrades. They will come but I doubt anytime soon.,

4.0.x ics, 4.1.x-4.3.x jellybean, 4.4.x kitkat... who knows when 5.0 will come out and what it will be. I'm sure we will get 4.3 and 4.4, 4.4 being the next major update.

Actually, 4.4 is not out yet. All they've done is announced the name. 4.3 is still the current version.
That being said, given that the new Note 10.1 will ship with 4.3 (I believe), it is a little annoying (ok - a lot annoying) that there's no news about an upgrade for existing Note 10.1s...
I think they will release sooner than later because they will want to sell more watches.
.
Updates are rolling out for so Samsung devices

I have the Tab 2 7.0 bought last August with ICS on it. Already it has been updated twice 4.1.2 and this August 4.2.2. Samsung is now updating Note 2. So the update is coming and Note 10 has a lot more features to tweak. You sound in a hurry for no reason. Why not just enjoy your tablet as is until it does. Apps make the tablet so if you want newness add some apps.
I usually change roms but on my non-rooted tablet launchers, themes and apps. Amazon gives a free paid app every day and plenty of sources to get apps besides Playstore and Samsung just virus scan them first or use an old Android device as test dummy.
