[Q] GT-I9050 is turning itself off randomly - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Need to share this, I posted this under T-Mobile but it should be under GT-I9050
My Galaxy S4 (GT-I9050) is turning itself off randomly, the battery indicator show it is more than 70% full. I did all sorts of factory resets and changed different ROMs, I even reverted to stock ROM but it still happened.
I noticed that it never turns off while it is connected to a power supply, which indicated a battery issue.
I checked on the net and some reported battery problems with S4 – bulging - due to keeping it charging overtime. My battery appeared OK until I compared it to a new one; it is notably swollen / bulged so I think I need to change it – it only 4 months old.
I owned many phones over the years and most of the time I keep it charging overnight without a problem, my understanding is that phones stop charging when the battery is full; does the S4 continuously charge?

I had the same issue. I just got mine back from the shop 2 days ago with a new battery and the latest firmware. The batteries are managed, there is no such thing as overcharging anymore. We were just unlucky to have a crappy battery. Mine died after a mere 2 months...

Update:
I replaced my battery with a new one and it is working fine, it is actually lasting almost 2 days.
It is interesting that the shop were I purchased the batter told me that they noticed higher demand for S4 batteries as they are failing more than any other phone.
Not sure of this is related to issues with the batteries or the charging software of the phone.

Continuous charging and rapid decrease battery

I have two months from the S4 and I noticed recently that the phone after plugging in the charger charges up to 100% and never stops charging.
After 1-2 hours, the phone is warm but still indicates that this is charging.
After disconnecting the charger in a few minutes the charge status of the battery drops to 80% and later is "normal", the phone works for a few days.
I tried the charger from HTC, Xperia Z but still the same problem.
In S3 there was no such problem.
He met someone with something like that?
Clean your usb port. Probably it got wet somehow.

Well now that you've charged it with a different kind of charger that may have less or more required power rating, time for a new battery... But for your situation you needed a new one anyway if it was doing that. My S2 did the same thing (replaced it with a new battery now it's running normal). But yeah never use a different charger unless it has the same power rating or whatever its called. Since your S4 is only two months old claim it under warranty and get a new one.
Other chargers tested just as soon as you notice problems with charging the.
Before taking the warranty will test a different battery.
A new battery will cost less than anything related to the warranty...
fter many wipe on the original firmware looks as if the problem is gone.
But change the firmware to another, such as Omega causing the problem comes back: (

[Q] Sudden Battery Drop after restart

I noticed by S4 battery was getting bloated and was spinnable on the table, at this point the phone was getting hot and randomly restarting. I went out and purchased a new genuine battery, replaced it and the phone still restarts but not as often.
what I exp now is that the phone will reboot randomly and when it comes back up it will lose charge say drop from 50% down to 30% etc
The battery has been fully charged twice, while the phone was off and records battery stats perfectly fine until the restart.
Is the battery at fault or has the first battery caused some issues with the phones hardware?
I have tried to restore the rom and it still restarts. It seems to restart far more if I use wifi, Bluetooth or anything that requires the internet.
It worked perfectly fine before I noticed the battery bloating.
Is anyone able to help?

Charge it fully.
Let it drain fully without restarting.
Recharge it again and see if the problem continues.
I doubt the old battery broke the phone. But the new battery MIGHT have a defective voltage meter.
My bet is that the charge % displayed after the restart is closer to accurate than the % shown before restart.
Are you 100% positive that this is a Samsung battery? And by 100% positive I mean you bought it in a reputable store? Not online? Not from some guy in a cart at the mall? Because even on sites like Amazon fake batteries are EVERYWHERE and are branded as genuine Samsung products.
That's not to say that otehr batteries are bad. There ar eplenty of quality 3rd party batteries available. But there are also plenty of cheap Chinese junk batteries with a genuine Samsung label on them.

yes I am 100% certain it is genuine as I am over in hong kong and know which batteries you are talking about on amazon.
it has been drained today and is now getting a full charge back up.

Strange battery issue please help.

My Note 4 is a Verizon version.
When the battery reaches 12% or thereabout the phone shuts off with a low battery warning.
When I hook up a charger it says the battery is at 37%
So what is the problem?
Bad battery?
I've got the same issue with a factory refurbished Note 4, would be interested to hear why this happens.
Well, this happened to me, too. I finally got a new battery and it didn't happen to me anymore.
Constantly charging, and not allowing the battery to fully discharge did this to me.
Going through two full charge / discharge cycles fixed this. So I'm thinking it was just a calibration issue.
I had the same problem. And I intentionally depleted the battery to less than 5% probably 95% of the time so I don't believe not allowing the battery to deplete enough could've been the issue, for me at least. I'm rooted so I tried different ROMs, calibration procedures and apps, charging and depleting the battery differently ie. draining to different levels, etc. Nothing worked and over time it just got worse and started shutting down at higher percentages. After reading many reports of this problem with the Note 4, I decided it must be a problem with the stock battery. I bought a 2 pack of Anker batteries, same capacity as stock battery, and I haven't had the problem once. It was back in October that I replaced the battery.

Many phone batteries are only rated for 600 charges. 1000 on a good one. Assume all have a limited life regardless of your charging/discharging method.

Samsung Galaxy J5 2016 7.1.1 rooted Battery Replacement problem/ New battery problem

Hi guys, about a month ago accidentally I dropped my phone, when I picked it up it was a bit thicker than usually so I opened it and the battery was a bit swollen and one of the corners from above was broken imgur.c om/a/KMLiaG2 . I knew that the swollen batteries should be changed because the risk of getting on fire or explosion, so I bought a new battery from a Telekom Shop, the only shop with batteries from my city imgur.c om/a/GOCQktK . I noticed that the new battery made in china is suddenly draining fast when reaches 37% and dies when it reaches 30%. I did numerous battery calibrations, deleting batterystats.bin, letting it in charge over night, factory resetting my phone but it was useless. It was still dying at 30%. I was going back to that shop and they ordered a new battery to change the defective one. After 3 days it arrived and guess what, this battery is draining fast as well, when reaches 25% till 5% and dies. If I use my old battery it still working good. I can use it 6-7 hours with no problems, but the batteries made in china are keeping about 3-4 hours till it start to drain fast. What's the problem? My phone has become accustomed to the old battery? For real now, 2 new battery in row and both of them are defective? Also, I noticed today that the new battery was 20% while charging, so I restarted the phone and it was 52%. Also, how is possible that my phone with new battery shows that the apps that use my battery are only 50%? I know that about 15% is used by phone background, but what is using the rest of 35%? imgur.c om/a/DEvd4F what's the problem??
That's just typical of cheap batteries. Unless you order an original online than your wasting your time.
Look up other manufacturers aswel with a good reputation.

Op5 won't charge past 70%

The past couple months I have had some charging issues with my phone. The first few times it just didn't want to recognize the charger or would only slow charge. A couple times cleaning the port helped. Then it seemed like the cord might be the problem so I ordered a new OEM one. The problem has gotten worse and happens the same with the brand new charger.
The last few days it will fast charge to 70% and then stop charging altogether. I can't get it to take any more than 70%. I had the accubattery app which had a feature to stop the charging at a preset value to prevent wear of the battery. I only used this for a little bit and turned it off. Then I uninstalled the app in case a glitch was causing it to keep stopping the charge.
I have a new OEM battery ready to install if the battery is indeed faulty but even starting at 70% I can't kill the phone in a day so I'm not rushing to replace the battery yet. I'm just not sure that is the problem.
The phone is not rooted and is completely stock. It hasn't been wiped or anything since I bought it new over a year ago. Anyone have any ideas?

Update: I powered off the phone when it was refusing to charge at all and it was down to 56 percent. While powered off it charged all the way up to 100% no problem and since doing that it will charge without problems. Seems like this fixed it.
Update: the problem is still there. Still not charging above 70% while turned on. Not sure if the battery is failing or if it's a software issue.
Does anyone know of any other forums people might be discussing issues with the OnePlus 5? This forum is looking quiet these days and/or people aren't having a lot of hardware issues with this phone (hopefully).

The op5 forum isn't quiet. If nobody has an idea or any possible solution for you, you won't receive an answer. Seems you're the only one who has this sort of problem.
If you have warranty, just claim it. That's the easier way. Cause when it's the logic board or parts of it, it can be expensive.
It's already over a year old so no more warranty. I'm just going to try replacing the battery when I get a chance. If that doesn't work I'll try a new charging port (already tried a new charger).

Have you tried using the Ampere app? It does not make any magic, but it can give you and idea of what the problem may be.

Yes I installed it the other day and discovered when I was plugged in above 70% it was actually charging but very slowly. But this isn't always the case because when I first discovered the problem I kept waking up with a phone at 70% that had been plugged in all night.
I'm not sure how long ago this started because I typically try to charge it in the morning after my alarm goes off since dash charging is so fast. Eventually I noticed it never getting above 70% so I plugged it in overnight and still didn't get over 70%.
Accubattery says my battery is now 82% healthy. Despite not being able to charge above 70 I can still get a heavy days usage or a couple easy days. So maybe the lost health in my battery came completely off the top of the displayed percentage of my battery?
Occasionally it seemed like my phone wouldn't charge at all no matter what the percentage so the problem could be worse, but I may also be dealing with a worn out 1 year old charger cable and a new one I got a month ago that is defective because when I couldn't charge at all with the new one the old one charged fine. So I'm still trying to figure this out.

i am facing the same issue, i keep plugging the charger in and out till it works ... don't know why
Now that I've gone back to the original charger it seems to be making it to 100% every time and no longer seems to stop at 70 but if I move the phone a little while plugged in it sometimes stops dash charging and starts slow charging. Before when I heard it stop charging and start charging again randomly while I was in bed (it makes that little sound when dash charging starts) it was sitting on the floor unmoved.
So I think my possibilities are 1) 2 bad chargers
2) 1 bad charger and a bad charging port
3) bad charging port
4) bad battery + 1 or more bad chargers.
Or any other combinations of those problems. I think I'm dealing with 2 issues and that's why I can't figure it out.
