Remove apps question - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

The Remove apps used up 1.56 GB of data. How can I shut it down? Foreground = 0 but Background = 1.56 GB! What is going on? I'm getting close to my 5GB cap and got a message from at&t.
Thanks for the help!

Learn to freeze bloatware the correct way and don't use such nonsense apps. I have no idea why it would be using data.

Under Data usage, it is listed and I have not install such an app. I assume it is a core function in android. So STFU about your wise a$$ remarks if you don't know don't answer....
On another note it this like a cleanup function android does for removed apps?

Your question is pretty unclear, what do you mean by "the remove apps" I'm going to take another guess and play store is updating your current apps. If you want to turn that off open play store and then go into settings and tell it not to auto update.

I'm hoping you have a Galaxy s4 at&t. They have a widget called Data Manager. It will list all the apps using data. I see a green android Icon called "Remove apps". I have no idea what this is or why it is using so much data, can anyone fill me in on what it does?

I would recommend doing a full factory reset right away.
Also, not to be rude by any means, but please read the forum rules..there's other ways to settle your differences with members other than public post. Thanks.

Thanks agent929, I will try the factory reset once I have all my pictures backed up. A few friends advised it was part of android but not sure the specifics on what it does.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure he's talking about "removed apps" on the list of what's using his data. This is referring to the data used by apps you have uninstalled, hense why it says removed.

It can't be if it's constantly increasing in size....but then again it can if he keeps uninstalling apps lol. That's a very good point you make here, and possibly could be the culprit right there.

Well data isn't used to remove apps, but if the quote I have above is true, it means apps that you have removed in the past has used a total of X amount of data in the past.

It's not saying there is an app that's using that data. It's not saying that removed apps are literally using data.
For example. If I install Chrome, and use 10GB of data with Chrome, usage will say Chrome has used 10GB of data. If I uninstall it, it will say removed apps has used 10GB of data. Get what I mean?

Can you explain how such a thing could cause such a failure?
Its looking to update something that isn't there. When it doesn't find it, the update doesn't know what to do, so it fails.

He is correct about this. If you delete or remove anything system wise make sure you have a back up copy. Come time for an update and that file is not there, it will most likely fail. Make sure you take note of the file permissions also.

This was really simple to delete but what a mistake as I actually want to run it from time to time. If no one can give me a way to download it I will be forced to reset my device as new.
I don't really want to do this but I will if necessary. Live and learn.
SYSTEM Updates do not look after apps present BUT ONLY THE DEVICE SPECIFIC SERIAL NUMBER AND VERSION NUMBER !
System updates do NOT look after specific apps to be present or not.
After major complete updates all system apps disabled are reinstalled and have to be deactivated again .

Hard (factory) reset won't bring any files back. An update however, or a reflash of original ROM will do the trick.
To all saying that removing system files will fail OTA: Stop posting stuff you know nothing about. It's better to shut up rather than guessing.

So if I hit reset and wipe everything it won't restore the tablet like it was when I got it out of the box? You're kidding right! Every other tablet / phone I've ever owned will do so.
I guess I'll just have to back up some data to test this out.

This has been a proven case with the transformer series. So I would say we know nothing about. We are just stating that it could. I don't believe anyone stated that it would for sure.

Had the same thing happen with the rezound. If the bloatware was removed it failed to update. If it didn't have the stock recovery it failed to update. Again differences between OEMs as has been stated with Asus having done the something.

Deleting the screensaver app should not cause the ota to fail. Otherwise Samsung wouldn't allow that action to be performed so easily without root. Put it this way... if you can go into manage apps and click uninstall chances are it's not system critical.

"Safe to Remove" Debloat list?

After my first attempt of debloating my phone i managed having to download the stock firmware and reset it with ODIN. Does anyone have a list of app they were able to get rid of without causing problems in the phone (Samsung text to speech crash, ect)

This list is only okay for freezing/disabling applications, NOT removing them. It's already been stated in several other threads that removing/deleting ChatOn and ChatOnV affects S-Voice, removing AT&T Messages can cause issues, removing other items listed on the link from defnow can certainly affect other apps and system performance.
I would not recommend removing ANY of the items, but rather disable or freeze the ones you really don't want and THEN remove after a week or two of no problems.
Even though this is not specific to AT&T and will therefore not include the AT&T bloatware, the only official list I know of that you can safely remove/delete is for the international version of the S4.

Best way to migrate all files data settings and info from old Nexus to new Nexus?

I'm likely upgrading soon to the new one, but I want to easily transfer all my stuff to the new one. I have over 500 apps, I use this thing every day, so I need a way to transfer Everything easily. Titanium Backup won't really work because I have used almost all the space on the device; and to make a full backup I'd have to use less than half the space. Unless you have an alternative solution.
Thanks in advance.
Nandroid using TWRP to 8G memory stick on USB OTG cable.
After rooting, Install TiBu on new one.
Restore from nandroid via same media on OTG using TiBu.
Never restore data from system apps.
Cumbersome, but if you absolutely need all 500 apps and data because you use them all regularly.....

I have CWM
I have a 32GB device, not a tiny 8GB one.
You didn't say that.
Use a 32G drive.
Install TWRP through GooManager.
Code:
adb backup -all -f c:/backup.ab
will use your tablet's native backup feature to save your apps and app data to your PC hard drive. On your new device go to Titanium Backup > Menu > Extract from ADB backup.

it's one of the requirements to root your device unless you used a method similar to the Exynos exploit for certain Samsung devices (But last I checked something like that didn't exist for Nexus 7 2012).
You'd just need adb set up on your PC. If you aren't sure if you have it set up you can redo it here (Plus has a little bit of extra info which may be helpful later down the road): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1387527

Exactly. In fact I have no notifications, except the ones I want, which are almost never. I use apps like Startup Auditor and Autorun Manager to prevent apps from running in the background and giving unwanted notifications.
I use apps like Ad Detector and Default App Manager to make sure none of my apps have pesky popup or notification ads, and easily remove them if they do.
I force close or disable apps I don't want running, like gmail and occasionally maildroid, gallery, and others.
The only somewhat annoying thing with having over 500 apps is that the Play store frequently tells me about all these updates that are ready. But I just turn off automatic updates for all apps and once a month or so I'll go in and manually update the apps I want to.
By the way, I went camping recently for 5 days and was very surprised and happy that I was still at 40% battery life by the end of the camping trip.
Sadly, however, during the camping trip I got a tiny scratch on the screen, because like a moron I procrastinated getting a screen protector
Yeah, I'd really like an answer from the person who said you'd have 300 notifications! At any rate, I don't know why anyone would think that having a lot of apps installed would lead to a lot of notifications. The t-mobile one you can uninstall. I don't have that one on my phone. The sprintDM and verizon backup wouldn't be such a big deal if it was just on the phone but the fact that it runs in the background is the annoying part for me. I'll probably end up needing that Verizon one as I plan on swapping my VZ and Tmobile sims from time to time. I hope 5.1 allows me to just swap the sim in instead of factory resetting the phone.

Wow, people. You should really listen to yourselves. When you have a device that works on multiple carriers, there are ALWAYS going to be carrier specific libraries in order to make things work. Yes, there's a VZWAPN APK. Yes, there's a SprintDM APK, there are also US Cellular-specific APKs in there, and there's probably some very T-Mobile and AT&T specific code if you want to dig for it. Christ, people. You have a phone that works on just about every network in the history of the world. Do you think that all happens just like magic without any involvement from any carrier at all?
And for those of you outside the US, clearly Google doesn't want to have to manage two separate ROMs for the Nexus 6 just over a few APKs, so yeah, your ROM is going to have APKs for US based carriers in it too. Somehow, I think you'll survive.
Come on, now. I know y'all are smarter than this.
I think its funny people are calling it bloat. Like its bing maps, skype or the samsung S apps.

We are smarter than that. That's why we freeze it. . It's just one of the things friends ask me is. Why do you like nexus phones and why should I switch? I tell them that nexus phones don't have all that bloatware carrier phones come with. And while it's still free of bloatware for the most part, I hope it's not a trend in the wrong direction. If they can install carrier apps depending on what carrier Sim, why weren't they able to keep these apps carrier specific? It's not THAT big of a deal for now but like I said I hope it doesn't go in the wrong direction.
My theory is that eventually the upcoming Google wireless service will be compatible across all 4 carriers. Imagine never having a coverage issue because you have a phone that works on all 4 concurrently with one service.

Safely removed bloatware (with root)

I didn't see a discussion yet so figured I'd start one. What files have you safely frozen or removed with root?

I don't plan on rooting, but would love to hear about disabling apps. Have there been any apps you CAN'T disable and keep out of the app drawer?
Facebook, Instagram, T-Mobile apps (kept visual voicemail, device unlock, and hotspot), flipboard, play books magazine music newsstand, hangouts, Google+, calculator. All without problem, make sure to reboot right after removing system apps.

Any of the non-obvious named ones? Like ones that are named as com.samsung.....
I wonder why do you guys root this phone. Do you really not care about Samsung Pay? It's one of the most important features and by rooting this device you make it gone forever.

I think the obvious answer is: yes, they really don't care about Samsung Pay. It being "the most important feature" is highly up to personal opinion

Right, and it's not even available until the summer. Definitely the most important thing to me is having full control over my phone, to remove/add what I want!

Never again will I use a computer or phone with ads in it. That's my reason. I couldn't care less about Samsung Pay, if it ever exists.

Not everyone lives in America either... I would be surprised if Samsung pay ever came to Canada.

they're probably only interested in deploying in the biggest economy. Canada is like 15th place. speaking from business point of view, probably not worth the effort setting up a bank system with so little money flowing.
Im in the UK. Doubt we will ever see it. Im gonna root. People complain about battery life but those bloatware apps are the biggest battery killers you can get. Facebook, whatsapp, instagram etc
