From a local store it is currently it is 1/2 price compared to nexus 7 (2013) from google play. So i am very tempted to buy it, so far I haven't felt the need for tablets but was thinking of using it to watch movies/videos when on the train commuting.
I don't know if I want to spend AU$300 for a 2013 model when this model is now $154 here.
From what i know, the good stuff about 2013 is
- 2GB RAM (This is probably the biggest thing)
- 1080p screen (Don't care too much about this, most stuff i watch is 720p anyway)
- Faster CPU
- Rear camera (Don't care!)
My intended usage is
- read books
- watch videos/movies
- play some light casual games
- light web surfing
- developing / testing tablet apps
So, will the 2012 be good enough if I don't need high performance? I am having a hard time justifying a 2x price for a category of device I have never owned and didn't think I need until now.
Yup, I think for that price the 2012 version is still bang for bucks and should be more then sufficient for the usage you planned.
The screen itself is the biggest upgrade over the 2012 N7. The colors are so vibrant on the 2013 model, side by side it makes the 2012 N7 screen look cheap.

I HAVE BOTH n7 2012 3g and 2013 - and 2012 i have been installed to my car
The 2012 7 is still a great tab. While the screen is what everyone talks about on the new model, I think the 2012 one looks great itself. And while I'm sure the difference is noticeable if the 2 are side by side, when I looked at the 2013 model in store I didn't notice a difference.

Agree. At half price it is a terrific tablet. The screen is not a problem. The speakers are not great but it is a superb tablet. Get it quickly.
Cool thanks. I ordered one.
Cant complain. I got mine in the mail and was disappointed not to have a rear camera. But I like it nonetheless. Can't complain about having a tablet at all.
Ebay $120 refurbed 16gb
For that price worth it. There have been issues (fixable) so it is somewhat a roll of the dice. Maybe the refurbed is the better way to go.
Still a good buy for your needs.

My only concern with it is that it's very slow compared to my Nexus 4. But there was a time when my Nexus 7 felt lightyears ahead of my GS2. So I guess it depends on what you compare it to.
For that price I would go for the n72012 the n7 is still capable of handling a good amount of application's.

So I'm trying to decide between purchasing a note 8 or a Nexus 10. I'm coming from a Kindle Fire 8.9 rooted with cm10.1 installed on it. That said, I've had TONS of tablets. Original galaxy tab 7, hp touchpad, galaxy tab 10.1, nexus 7, original transformer, xoom 2, xoom 1, and the transformer pad. I'm a tech junkie(as a profession) so I know my stuff. The problem I'm facing between the two is that I love the 8" screen, the quad core processor, sd expandability, and the ability to use hspa+. However the nexus 10 offers much more developer support, had that amazing high res screen, really good speakers, and stock android. Ish if anybody has had both and has preferences...or any arguments either way? If so it would be a HUGE help. THANKS!
Additionally I would make use of the spen because I do a lot of note taking on my tablet. But currently I just type everything out. That said, the Motorola xoom 2 uses a pointed stylus I believe the nexus could use if I wanted to.
Do you have a link to that stylus?
It all comes down to pen or no pen, is what it is. Do you want to draw and/or handwrite on it? If so, go for Note. If not, then keep what you have.

I was looking at the Note 8, especially because of that 3G radio, but that WXGA 189 ppi screen resolution killed it for me. Let me explain. I picked up a Zenbook Prime ultrabook with a 1080p 165 ppi screen last summer and was blown away by how great it looked, particularly with the matte screen. Then I got my first tablet, a Nexus 10, in January and its screen soon made me look down on the Zenbook's screen by comparison, that's how great the WQXGA 300 ppi screen is. :highfive: Once you step up to retina-level ppi, it's tough to go back.
That said, you've pretty much summed up the strengths of each tablet. It really depends on how mobile you need your tablet to be and how much you'd use the stylus, I only use my Nexus 10 around the house so it works better for me. That beautiful screen is also its weakness, as it sucks power like crazy. I always keep it on the low end of the brightness scale (lowest brightness setting allowed, which is still surprisingly bright, in a dark room, maybe 35% setting during the day) and the screen still consistently eats 60-70% of the power for me, according to the battery stats. It goes about 6-6.5 hours of continuous use on a single charge, best case (holds charge fantastic, kept using it sporadically for almost two weeks on a single charge one time).
I estimate that the Exynos 5 Dual in the Nexus 10 pulls about 5 W on average, up to 9-10 W max, which is a lot, even with a 33.75 Wh battery. I'd check the Note 8's reviews to see if it does any better, here's one you could read. The Nexus 10 can get pretty hot up top where the logic board is, though not as bad as some of the hottest devices, and you're not going to hold it up there anyway. I was surprised at how heavy 603 grams felt in my hands, I suggest you try holding one before you decide. At 338 grams, the Note 8 is almost half the weight.
The front-facing speakers are good on the Nexus 10, but the maximum volume is not as high as I'd like. You never know how high the volume is going to be on various videos and not being able to compensate by turning the volume up enough can be annoying. The camera may be the weakest link, just mediocre. I'd expect the Note 8 to have a better one on the back, though the front camera on the Nexus 10 has 50% more megapixels.
If I were you, I'd wait for the next Nexus 7, which is supposed to launch with a Full HD screen in a month or so. If you really need a good stylus, the Note 8 has a Wacom digitizer built in, so it can't be beat. If you want the gorgeous screen and don't mind the stuff I pointed out, Nexus 10. For all the flaws I've listed in the Nexus 10, I'm very happy with it, only big complaint is with Android web browsers generally, but that's a whole different Android software issue.
The other thing...is that I can get the nexus 10 for $260 (16gb model...used of course but in new condition), and the note 8 for $300. Makes it a bit of a tougher choice seeing as how I can get either relatively inexpensive lol. I'd wait for the next Nexus 7 but I had it right before I got my Kindle fire 8.9" and 7" just doesn't do it for me. Thing is...idk if that 8" will do it for me either(that sounds iffy LOL!) thats why I don't want the next Nexus 7

Have you considered the Galaxy Note 10? It's pretty much the same thing, just stretched out to 10" with a battery that holds 50% more juice. Other specs might be slightly worse since it's older, for example, the same CPU but at a lower frequency, but it has a 3G radio and the stylus/digitizer that you wanted. I suggest you go to a store and handle these tablets before deciding, if you're not sure if 7-8" will do it for you.
Hello,
I am currently considering to buy either 1st or 2nd generation manufacturer refurbished Nexus 7.
I am estimating that the lowest price I can probably get for 2nd gen manufacturer refurb 16GB Nexus 7 is about 180 (220 probably for 32GB)
Whereas, 32GB refurb Nexus 7 is sold only for around 150 in Ebay these days.
In one word, 2nd gen is definitely a better tablet whereas 1st gen is a better tablet for price (I think).
So...
1. Is Nexus7 1st gen really that horrible?
I have heard lots of complaints about 1st gen N7's hardware.
People claimed that Tegra3 sucks and it lags (Does it lag more than GS3), display has horrible color saturation and color tone, and Tablet itself is too thick compared to 2nd Gen.
But... is it that horrible? (I am especially concerned with the performance part)
2. Does 2nd gen N7 worth the money
Well it costs about $70 more on Ebay.
Do you think it worth the money?
(in some sense, it is 50% more expansive then its 1st gen version)
Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
Have a nice day!
PS
Also, do you think if I get a 16GB version of N7, do you think I will eventually regret due to lack of storage?
Believe me, buy the 2nd gen.
$70 difference is not that much if you can save a bit.
Suppose it's $10 I spend for lunch, I will not have lunch for 7 days and buy the 2nd gen
Yes it is worth it. Screen resolution, physical size, and internal hardware are all big improvements over the 1st gen. If you can spring for the 32GB over the 16GB definitely do so. I have a 16GB and kind of wish I had sprung for the 32GB.
Yeah dude go with the 2nd. 1.8xCPU 4xGPU. And your going to miss out on this beautiful display (which is the main reason I decided to even buy a tablet)
Sent from my SGH-T769
The 2nd gen machine is the machine the first gen machine should've been.
2nd gen definitely, with the 32gb. The build quality and crisp screen are worth it alone imo. It has a really nice feel. The only reason I say go for the higher memory is because, if you get a 16gb one, you're only going to have about 8gb of free space. Enough for some, but not for me. Better to have more than not enough imo...
I love mine so much im buying another (lte version when available) ^_^

This type of debate has been going on for a huge amount of threads, but yes, you should go for the new Nexus. Power, display, camera, speed performance, to name just a few. Plus, many flaws erased(though there's no denying the new flaws )
2013, definitely. (Is it unanimous yet?)
Just get the 32gb 2nd generation. Why would you buy an outdated device?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
If you can afford it Go with the 2nd generation.
the performance and screen quality is like Day and night.
this tablet will keep for a long time.
In short, the N7 2 is snappier, thinner, great display, and has a rear camera.
I'm hoping JB 4.3 helps the performance of the 1st Gen N7... it just doesn't manage resources as well. Both are plastic, so build quality is about the same, the gen 2 wins out since it's a little thinner and narrower which seems a little more natural in hand. The displays are small, but again the 2nd has a higher resolution... But only a side-by-side comparison would reveal the difference. Alone both displays are really nice.
I really missed the rear camera. With my Flyer, I had the option to integrate handwritten notes and whiteboard snapshots. The N7 without the rear camera was obviously awkward in those situations. The N7 2 makes it less awkward and makes the tablet a companion into meetings again. Still miss a digitizer for accurate handwritten notes, but I'm hoping this device has better support from the community. Photosphere is cool, and 5MP is plenty for what I need.
As for memory, both support OTG. I use Dropbox extensively. They wireless card readers, but I find hardwired OTG faster and more compact... Unless sharing content with others in which case the wireless card reader is great.
I'm looking for a good BT keyboard and seriously considering the LTE version when released.
It is defenitely worth it.
The 1st gen Nexus 7 is suffering on major slowdowns due to the slow cpu/gpu. Even the Exynos 4 in the S3 is faster.
If you play Gameloft games, you will notice this.
Tegra 3 optimized games are fine though but most non-Tegra optimized games are laggy.
Also, the OpenGL ES 3.0 capability of the Adreno 320 should give you some extra graphic effects in supported games.
Next awesome CPU will be Tegra 4, but the Tegra 3 can already get sent to pension.
Get the new one. Hands down it's better.
Does the 2nd generation Nexus 7 worth the money compared to the 1st generation?
Thank you Guys As I had the similar kind of post going on ....

It all depends on how much you're willing to spend.
I returned my 32 GB 2013 N7 because it just wasn't worth $270 to me. Small tablets are really cheap now, and personally I wouldn't spend more than $150 for one anymore.
Then I bought a 32 GB 2012 N7 for $100 in mint condition from Swappa (take a look, the good deals are out there!) and I'm quite happy with that.
We all know this is an amazing device, but why did you get yours? I'm sure 80% of those reading this own both a nexus 7(2013) and a smartphone released within the last 2 years.

I've been lucky with my TF700T - I haven't run into the performance issues so many others have seen. With 64GB internal memory, plus a 64GB microSD in it, and another 64GB card in the dock it has tons of on-board memory - and then it has the USB port in the dock with enough juice to power a 1TB drive attached, making it excellent for playing ripped movies on the beautiful 10" screen. So for me, one does not replace the other, just makes for more flexible choices. But I do spend far more time on the N7 now.

Cuz i got the 16gb for 140 that was used for a month!
To take camping, being smaller than my TF101. And I don't have to transcode every 720p or 1080p video from high profile H264 to baseline. And I love the screen. Don't love the lack of micro SD slot, but the meenova OTG adaptor fixes that.
I've now got 4 of them and using them to build a Home Media System (to replace an older Intercom System) - pics and details in this thread.
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=83560.0
One particular issue is trying to replace the simple "Page" function of the old intercom. I'm currently using Skype but it does not cut the mustard, though thankfully the developer of "Android Intercom" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidintercom&hl=en seems keen to make some changes to support what I need. Just a simple way of pressing a button and turning on two way comms between the tablets so you can say "Dinner" and the Kids can say "Coming"!
Edit, the N7 is perfect for this project as it has:
- Wireless Charging (so I can mount Qi chargers behind the picture frame)
- Touch to Wake (thanks for the ElementalX Kernal)
- Playback all the media thanks to JRiver's Gizmo
- The Speakers are OK (not great but OK)
- Stable, they don't seem to crash/hang
- Good Screen
- Cheap!
Great screen resolution,

I havegalaxy note (2011) and i use my note for surfing webs but the note is very laggy and it still has outdated android 4.0 (i didnt rooted it)
So i choose nexus 7 32 gb cause of better screen fast cpu etc and nexus 7 is an EPIC device. Everything is fast. the screen is awsome and i think every penny u spend on this device is worth it! And im looking forward for android 4.4 update.

OK so I know I probably came to the wrong thread, but my question is aimed specifically at people who use the nexus 5 and also own a nexus 7. Is the screen that much of a difference? Is it worth being a companion to my pretty big nexus 5 or should I not waste my dinero and buy a mid range tab for a bigger contrast in screen size? I was thinking lg g pad cause of the processor upgrade from the nexus 7, screen size, and storage expansion. but it is early 2014 not sure if I should wait for this years tablets to come out and make a decision.
most people here are using the original nexus 7 from 2012,you can buy one of those for around $90 on craigslist or around 110 on ebay.
i dont have a nexus 5 but i own a droid dna and the nexus 5 has a slightly bigger screen but honestly,a 7 inch tablet is way better for reading or just laying down and watching a movie compared to most phones, even the bigger ones.
if i were you ,id get the newer nexus 7 tho ,its slimmer and has better specs, but the original can be bought cheap and it will still handle pretty much anything as the specs are not too outdated yet,
N7 is awesome. Its the perfect size and imo the best bang for your buck device

I have a Note 2 phone with 5.5 inch screen. The 7 inch screen is so much better then even this monster phone.I also have a note 10.1.. I love the screen size on it.But it does not fit in my purse.
I would say yes its worth it ..But you gotta ask yourself some questions. How much money you are willing to spend. Do you need it NOW. How much storage space do you need. Do you need a network radio in it .
After you come up with the above answers if . question one is you have plenty of money and question 2 is you DO NOT have to have it this day. Wait and get the next greatest thing. a
Well you can figure the rest out.
I can tell you its a awesome device.. GET 32 GB Version. You will be glad you did.
Good Luck
They're exactly the same interface and software wise, except some apps are displayed in tablet mode, which is usually better but sometimes worse. Another difference is also that in landscape, the virtual buttons are portrait on the right on Nexus 5 and on Nexus 7 they are landscape on the bottom, wasting precious screen height. These virtual buttons are the only thing I hate about the Nexus 7, after removing them with apps in the Store, you gain a lot of screen space. However, Nexus 5 is 16:9, while Nexus 7 is 16:10, so the visible screen is more or less the same in the end.
I mostly use it in portrait mode because of that.
As I said, that is the only thing that bugs me about it. Otherwise, it's a great little tablet, great size for watching movies, series on the go (or in bed), it should play all games available in the Store and do all other unproductive things you can do on a tablet.
I had a 2011 Xperia Arc S before, and with it's single core CPU it quickly failed to play latest games, that's why I resorted to the Nexus 7.
Nexus 5, however, is newer, has the latest hardware and is capable of playing anything you throw at it, so getting a Nexus 7 is really only for extra screen size, but it does pay off. Maybe diagonal isn't the best measure, try screen area:
Nexus 5: 69 cm^2
Nexus 7: 142 cm^2
So the screen is actually double the size of the Nexus 5, and it's noticeably bigger when watching videos.
If you're going to mostly use it to watch videos, get the N7, if you're primarily going to surf the internet and read documents and such, I'd recommend you to check out the 8" tablets LG Pad 8.3 and Samsung 8" (tab or note), both come with buttons on the side and therefore have more vertical pixels (both 16:10).
Then there's also 2013 Nexus 7, with latest chip and 16:10 fullHD but it's quite pricier then its 2012 brother.
Why would you need a tablet for anyway? If you want it because it's popular, then forget about it. If you have other reasons, write them down, it's easier to recommend that way.
I would highly recommend the original Nexus 7 (as long as you don't need HDMI out) ts still a great tablet and works well and you can get it for a great price. I would highly recommend you DON'T get the 2013 it has known defects with the screen (do some research).

I own both, Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 (2012). Have to say that N5 screen is awesome, but still N7 screen is nice and totally usable and it's so cheap, that you can later easily change to some other device if you want.
One good thing is that, the Nexus 7 is still supported by Google so you get official updates at least some time. When Google drop support, then you can always use custom roms.
Personally I buy only Nexus devices, because they get always best support from Google and maybe best community support.

I don't play much games, but on normal usage stock 4.4.2 is working smoothly without any noticeable lag. And yes, you can't compare speed to N5, but old N7 is not bad at all if we compare example to N4.
Do you have some free example game(s) what you mean? I can test and let you know is it working smoothly or not... Maybe this info is useful to @BNNEBULA too.
After more than one year of the Nexus 7 (2013), how many of you will be buying the new Nexus 9?
One of the main reasons for the Nexus 7's success was the awesome price point. With a reported price for the Nexus 9 being $400, are you willing to put out extra for an even better Nexus experience?
I'm on the fence. I am a little leery of the Nvidia chip. But the touchscreen issues on my N7 2013 is really pissing me off to the point where I want to replace it.
Several of my used apps aren't compatible with Android L.
I think I might roll back my N7 to 4.4.2, flash the touchscreen fix on it, and call it a day. I'm definitely not buying day 1. Plus I'm torn between the NVidia Shield with the stylus, although it has reportedly faulty wifi (equally annoying).
I may buy it (have been waiting for it by-passing tab pro and tab s and even new ipad air), but this time, I will wait a while to see how it performs. The touchscreen issues on my N 7 2 (my old Toshiba Thrive has better touch response overall) and the weak cellular signals on my N5 both piss me off at times. That's why I'm going to wait. Liked my galaxy nexus, loved my N4 (but no lte), and liked my original N7. Not looking at the N6 at all.
It did seem to me that L improved the touch issue (made it less noticeable), but I didn't leave it on for very long.
Not sure if it the NVIDIA chip was confirmed yet or not, but that would make me pass on it. I have a pretty strong stance against NVIDIA's proprietary tech, and won't willing support it by buying such hardware...
Sadly though, I'd love to have a large Android tablet again. My Nexus 10 was awesome while I had it.
Edit: Yep, it's using a NVIDIA Tegra K1...
I'm torn. I'm not a huge fan of the 7" tablet form factor with phones getting larger. This seems like a great size. I'm not excited about the priced that's been rumored and I'd like to see them add the microSD card option that some have been speculating may be part of the N9. 32GB just isn't enough and the "on the go" feature is nice but still not as nice as the option to just add in a microSD.
Edit: Checking out the full specs, no mention of microSD and looks like they stuck with 2GB for the RAM. A bit disappointing to say the least...

So no thanks i will stick with Nexus 7 2013
Not interested at all. I don't care for the 4:3 ratio and $399 is overpriced for only 16gb with no SD storage. I don't understand why 16gb or even 32gb is still the norm. RAM is cheap… 64gb should be the starting point and 128gb the upgrade.

No kidding! $400 for the 16Gb! That would make the LTE version maybe ... $550-600! Yeah I'm happy with my Deb (except that the updates are late cause of Verizon), I don't even think I could convince my wife to get it to replace of our iPad 1 (Hey it was a gift) once it dies. The Nexus Player looks interesting wanna see how it shakes out 1st since it is a bigger jump price wise from a Chromecast.
Yeah, at $400 I feel like they're missing what made the Nexus 7s so popular. They were arguably the best tabs on the market for half the price of the competition. And why the heck did they go 4:3? That made it a no-buy regardless of the price for me.
The 32gb LTE versions are $599. The price is really off putting for me. $300 seems to be the right price point for a high end 32gb android tablet.
absolutely yes
I love my N 7 2013 but aspect ratio. 4:3 way better on my taste. Price is quite high though
The main reason I won't be buying it is primarily because of the price. I would love to get my hands on it if I could though
I will be sticking with my Nexus 7 for awhile longer. It still does everything I want it to and is the perfect size to carry around in my back pocket at the Airport while traveling. The 9 will be just a bit too big. I was hoping for an updated 7 near the same price but the price also kills it for me since I have my first kid on the way. Oh well.
Overall, my Nexus 7 FHD, is perfectly fine. It'll be getting Android 5, and its small and light enough to take everywhere. I am also leery of NVIDIA mobile chipsets, especially after the way that Tegra 3 and Tegra 4 were quickly abandoned.
I'll be watching though, because the specs still make me drool a little. ????
No for the Nexus 9. I may get one in the future, but not until some refurbs show up with a better price. I love my N7 and don't see a need to move on from it.
Price is definitely an issue and so is the size. That's why I got the nexus 7. An 8 inch tablet is about as big as id go if I were to get another tablet. Which is another reason I'm not getting a nexus 6. Sure the specs are great but it's too dang big!
I was planning on upgrading to the 6 and the 9. But totally disappointed by both, size and price are not acceptable.

First I need to have the Nexus 9 in my hands for a few minutes in a store, so I can decide if it's for me or not at this time(like I did with my nexus 7 2013 a few months back when I got it) . Going from 7" 16:9 to 8.9" 4:3 might be weird for me and others. But I think an upgrade for me most likely will be in late 1Q of 2015 as I am just in love for now with the Nexus 7 2013 size, screen, responsiveness and portability.
Nexus 7 2013 is reaching it's EOL in 2015 as Google only supports Android updates for only 2 years on it's devices but there's always xda development community that will keep it alive, hopefully for another 2.
So at most Nexus 7 2013 will see an Official Android 5.1 Lollipop (5.1 would be a mini update if needed) next year or not and after that Google will stop caring about it.
Will the nex 9 be stock or have that crap htc sense?
