Hi,
So on my nexus 4, I activated a SIM card on AT&T's new go phone plan which gives unlimited talk, text and data for $35.
Talk and texts are working fine, but data is not.
I have set up the APN correctly, and the data icon (H or H+) appears indicating that I am connected. However, it does not transfer any data (web page not available error etc).
Does anyone know the workaround to this issue?
thanks much.

just reading their new go phone plans.. for $60, you get 2gb data. so, at $35, i highly doubt that you are getting unlimited data. call att, let them figure out the issue. if you are getting a connection, but arent getting a data flow, its either your plan or an issue on their side http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=24397&cdvn=news&newsarticleid=36623
Yeah check your plan and make sure your have sufficient data.
Umm... The $35/month plan is not for smart phones, the plan description for that plan specifically says smart phones get WiFi only for data.
$35.00/mo.
500 minutes of calling within the US, plus unlimited nationwide text/picture/ video messages and unlimited text from US to Mexico, Canada and over 100 countries. Calls over 500 minutes are charged at 10c/minute. Unlimited data/mobile web for feature phones only. Plan not available for Smartphones.

Doh! I guess I could see where someone didn't see the "Smartphone Plan" chart, could look at the wrong "Basic/quick messaging phone plans" chart and saw the word "unlimited" under "Data/Mobile" without hitting "View details", but unlimited everything for $35 a month? Come on, everybody would be on that plan.

My point was for the OP that he will not get data, except for MMS, on a smartphone, there is nothing wrong... (S)he just didn't do their research and got the wrong plan and it is working as intended.

yes you did misinterpret... the questions is, per the OP, is there a workaround?
I am fully aware that they it's not for smartphones...
are they doing the IMEI block net, etc?

I'm not sure if this will work - but it's worth a try...
If you have a 'feature phone', insert your sim card into that device and call them to have them provision data to your sim. Once complete, remove the SIM from the feature phone and insert it into your Nexus 4.
I am using my Nexus 4 on medianet with ATT and haven't had any issues. Their account manager does not recognize my device - however, that being said, I do have a 'smartphone exception' on my account from years ago as well.
I have read accounts of some Nexus users being forced to a smartphone plan, but I have had no issues as of yet. HSPA isn't the best on AT&T, but I'm often on wifi and you can't beat $10 a month for data.
I believe they are using some kind of browser detection. The same way they can tell if one is tethering.

If this is the case, couldn't you use Maxthon or another browser that allows you to set the Browser (User) Agent ID that it reports? The real problem would then be that webpages that recognize that browser would format their pages for it, causing them not to be displayed optimally. This site might be helpful: http://www.zytrax.com/tech/web/mobile_ids.html
Edit: apparently you can't do that in Maxthon anymore, at least not that I can find... Dolphin used to allow this but I don't have it installed anymore.

I have had media net data on my line for years - I want to say it was originally added back in 2006. When I upgraded my line at that time to a Blackberry, I had them keep me on the media net plan and they added a 'smart phone exception' to my contract at that time. Basically allowed me to have a Blackberry without paying the additional $10/month (at that time) for the 'Blackberry Data'.
I have no idea if its still possible to add such an exception - I highly doubt it.
To try and add media net to your account now, you'll have to insert your sim into a 'feature phone'. Once it is active on their online account manager, you can go in and add media net data under the data plan options (I believe now its $15 month for ATT users). Once you've added it, put the sim back into your Nexus 4 and hope for the best.
If its detected as a smartphone, they will send ATT subscribers a text message saying so and upgrade you to a smartphone data plan automatically. Not sure how they handle go phone users in such a situation.

More a T-Mobile question than a G1 question, but no one knows more than this community, so here goes:
I just got a Vibrant and want to possibly give my G1 to my son, who has no data plan on his line. I think he's less than a year into his two year contract with a cheap little Motorola phone. He's okay with using the phone without a data plan while he's out and about and just using the wifi when available, but if I recall, T-Mobile used to automatically add a data plan to the line when activated. Do they still do this and if so, is there a way to avoid this? The G1 is rooted, btw, if that makes any difference.
Yes u still need a data plan according to T-Mobile. Thankfully we have xda modders. Lol. Go to g1 section and search for how to activate a g1 without a data plan. That will fix u up. Good luck

It shouldn't be a problem. If you installed one of Cyanogen Mods roms, you can register via Wifi by skipping it and setting it up than linking up your Google account after.
T-Mobile adds a data plan when your phone is being activated.

i followed this and it worked great!
If he USES data, he will be CHARGED for it. If he wishes to NOT BE CHARGED FOR DATA, be sure to disable data usage.
OP is asking if they automatically add a data plan when a new SIM card is detected. No, they do not!
If your son doesn't know about root, UNROOT IT! T-Mobile will not charge any data usage if there is no data plan. I have a friend with no data plan and unrooted and he is unable to use any data. Market will not load without wifi and same for browser or any application or function that requires data.

With most carriers, without a data plan, it will be on PAY PER USE!

They can't legally charge you for something you didn't agree to.
Did you agree to letting them charge you for that? If the answer is NO, then they can't legally charge you for it.

Easiest way to avoid any issues:
Download APNDroid, APN on/off widget, etc, and turn 3G/Edge/Gprs off. I'm not sure if you will still be able to send and receive MMS though. You will need somebody else's simcard with a data plan to activate. I am unsure if JF's way of activating through wifi applies to the vibrant.

Isn't the data plan tied to the sim card ? Rooted or not ? I have 2 lines on T-mo acct., girlfriend doesn't have data, I do. If you switch sim card to a different phone, she "still" doesn't have data. I do.
Just tell T-MO no data on that line.
Well, on release date I ran to the bell store on got my new shiny galaxy s i9000m. Since then I have had my phone cut off. I called mother bell to find they think my phone has been tethered with my laptop (which was stolen last sunday ) even though I have never tethered with this phone. It seems it is logging my web surfing data properly but any data an app uses seems to be counted as out of plan tendering. Before u ask I do have an "unlimited data" plan and am keeping 3g usage well under 5gb. First is anyone else having this fight with bell and do u think it could have something to do with apn settings. My phone is not rooted (yet) as I want to leave everything stock until they fix the billing issue.
It is increasing my bill by between $200 and $500. What a joke

good lord Fido, protect us all
sorry to hear that, but thanks for share, it is definitely something we should be aware of.
SGS i9000 phone is a data hungry device, specially if you have lots of sync with emails, facebook, tweet, weather, etc, etc....
but regardless of any of that, even if you go as far as backing up your ROM to an online storage, it will not consume so much data
the worst part is WTH is wrong with Bell? you got the unlimited data plan, so why the hell are they trying to charge you $500
this is ridiculous.
They think that app data on the phone is tethered data. And being that I don't have a tendering plan they are charging me $6 per mb. Nice huh. After they told me to pay and get lost twice I went to the store and had a fit. Store believed me and got hung up on when trying to fix the issue with the call center. They are escalating it but in the mean time I am accumulatING lots is coin on my bill

I called bell and they said i shouldnt have to worry about anything once my bill comes as it will be taken care of... i sure hope so.

They are full of it. They will bill u if it is being marked as out of plan. I have a hand delivered mail from them telling me I owe $2000 for tethering . I can add your info into my general complaint if u want. Pm me and I can pass your info onto the regional manager the local store is dealing with to prove they need to fix there ****
On a side note my apn looks to be setup to use the phone for tethering and does not use the suggested nexus one apn settings again I feel that all data NOT traveling over port 80 or not travelling through the browser is being considered tethering by their proxy

Unlimited data isn't a normal plan option so maybe they're confused. I didn't even think you could get unlimited data. I know they had unlimited mobile browsing but I would think that's just web browsing if you grandfathered that feature in.
I have a very old grandfatherd smartphone data plan. At the time they offered 500mb or unlimited. The trick is unlimited means 5gb and then they start pulling out the network abuse card to have legal course to shut down your data. Kinda like the unlimited plans in the US.
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
Well, definitely keep arguing with them, but unless your plan is godly you can also grab 6 GB of data for $30, which includes tethering. Then they can't accuse you of tethering anymore, so they'll just accuse you of roaming data charges instead >_>
Have you had an HSPA smartphone before or just CDMA ones? If this is your first HSPA phone maybe the plan transfer from CDMA didn't go properly. This is Bell we're talking about, staffed by idiots.

that is a good point. I did have a cdma smartphone b4 so I never know. I am paying $40 for my data but that also includes enhanced vm, unlimited txt and mms, and caller is so I will have trouble giving up what I have as to add those features to the data plan u have would cost more than what I pay now. Currently I have an awesome plan setup between two phones and if I had to restructure it would cost way more

You might want to check you APN settings.
Some carriers use different APN for phone data and tethered data.
In my case, first time I booted my GS, it was the thethered data APN that was selected and I had to change it (hopefully I always check APN settings when using a new phone).

That is exactly what I was think as one of my posts stated. Thank-you for the confirmation on that. Mine is set to inet.bell.ca which on bells site is used if u want to tether. Because I am on an older smartphone plan I believe it is thinking all app data is tethered data.

I just checked and my APN is also inet.bell.ca. I don't know if it's supposed to be something else but when I go to self serve it says I've been using data in-plan. I'm covered for tethering anyway, but still, if that's the tethering APN they shouldn't make it the default for this reason.
I'm Getting billed fine.. Mine is set to inet.bell.ca .. I just checked my un-billed usage and it shows all usage in-plan Data use. I have used about 20meg since the 8th also I just have 500meg data plan a month..
I agree. The settings for the nexus one are different and probably the right ones for my data plan however I don't want to change them yet as they will probably tell me that I must have stopped tethering after I got the letter from bell and stick me with the charges. Until mid next week I need to be able to reproduce the issue so I van prove they are retarded.

Ya all the new plans do included Tethering.. just checked... your likely right as to the reason this is happening to you.. the computer system is not seeing that you have a data plan.. might take a few level up to fix that for you but I have a feeling if this is what is happening there are others as well having the same issue.
yeah Im going to call in right now and tell them to fix it right away, Im rightfully paying for my 6GB data package, I WILL NOT pay them a cent more than I agree to. 30$ is quite enough already for 6GB.
BTW i changed it to pda.bell.com and it seems to be working... ill keep you guys informed.
On a side not, if they were smart i think they would charge at least simi reasonable rates for out of plan data usage while roaming or not... ie 1$ per megabyte. That way people would travel with their phones and actually bring in more revenue for said provider... I dont carry my phone while i travel because of the ridiculous 54$/mb.
Lol. Without roaming ire is 6 per meg. I just calculated the total they think i owe and it Ian up to $ 3408 since Aug 6th. Gotta love it.

Their new prepaid plans actually give you 1500 minutes or texts and like 30 megs of EDGE data. It's enough for email and browsing. Not a bad deal at all if you ask me.

Yes it is possible, T-Mobile has a sneaky way of charging even without a plan. If you access data, they charge you per megabit or megabyte or something like that, even if you don't have a plan.
You can go onto t-mobile.com and access your account, and completely turn off the option to ever access data.

NO, I'm not wrong, I have 5 lines on my account, only two have a data plan. The other 3 lines were being charged per use data fee because the people who have those phones were using the internet on the phone, I think it was per megabyte or megabit I'm not sure.
I had to call in and complain several times until I got a supervisor that explained to me that even without a data plan, if the internet is accessed you get charged for the bandwith usage. She showed me how to log onto my t-mobile and completely turn off access to data, and they reversed the fees.
1. you only need an original iphone imei.. not a sim card
2. call and add the imie to the account (2things will happen, 1. they will add the imei and the billing system will allow them to add the $20 unlimited data or 2. a case will be submitted and within 48 hours the data plan will be added)
3. after it has been add your data most likely will not work.
4. call in the next day and tell them you have a new phone
5. be imperitive about keepin the data if the rep cant do it. do not change the imei you must call back different cal centers have different abilities depending on the billing system.
6. get it changed to the soc code is-HSDPBB (4G HSPA+) $30 data plan. and add your imie back
*** BE SURE YOU TELL THE REP THAT EXACT SOC CODE UP ABOVE (HSDPPB) ITS WHAT THE BILLING SYSTEM RECOGNIZES
****STARTING OCTOBER 5th ALL UNLIMITED DATA USERS IN THE TOP 5% WILL BE THROTTLED JUST FYI****
and yes i know that this type of thing is posted couldnt help myself to clear certain things up
is this the same as smartphone personal? when i did my upgrade i still have smartphone personal in olam.
and my upgrade was done at a cor store.
So adding an iphone IMEI will create a new line? OR do you decativate your atrix line?
HSDPPB is "Data Plan for SmartPhones. Unlimited domestic data usage. Only available for upgrades. Requires customers to be on a "Gold List" SmartPhone Plan prior to upgrade to 4G device."
Once you have the iPhone unlimited data plan in place, any customer service supervisor should be able to change your data plan to HSDPPB because the iPhone unlimited plan is on the "gold list" of data plans necessary to be able to get HSDPPB. If the first rep you get says they can't do it, just ask to speak to his or her supervisor.

Log in to OLAM, then go to the Manage Features page for your account. If "Smartphone Personal" is your selected data plan, click on those words ("Smartphone Personal"). The last few digits of the URL for the Java pop-up window will be the data plan code.

He posted a different thread if you read it. He is telling people they don't need a SIM card to do this!
Next time read the thread you are linking AND the thread you are posting in properly before posting!
The thing is (I think) is the ime that is registered to your account. Walk in to a store with an iphone. Say you want to switch your account to that phone and get your $20 plan. Walk out and shove that sim card into your android phone and you are done. The imei of the iphone is still registered to your account.
Please correct if I'm wrong. But using this method with blackberry instead of iphone yielded me and a bunch of friends unlimited undetected usage in a blackberry plan. I have a blackberry bold that I just pass to my friends to use to register blackberry plans and then switch sim card.
Anyway that's it lol

Would it matter what kind of blackberry I would do this with? I thought they did IMEI sweeps where they would find if you changed the device on the sim chip. Can you give me the details on how you did that?
I don't know how it works myself, but if I switch my SIM into any other phones my AT&T account shows the phone change very soon afterwards.

The change meaning a text telling you to revert back to a "qualified 4g plan"?

You can do it with any gsm blackberry. Make sur you get a new aim card for the phone and put it on a blackberry plan. Then put that sim in your android phone. That simple.. For me anyway..
Now I'm on bell with an ATT phone, so bell don't recognize it. It still says blackberry bold in my bell account. But I got my brother to do it and he had a bell phone, so his bell account did pick it up and he still hasn't gotten charged for any data. We tracked our data the last 2 months. The account don't pick up any usage at all. Bell has yet to contact him for having the wrong plan.

It seems different providers may have different ways of handling this. Bell may just be too dumb to know the difference. Seems crazy to be that simple

The supervisor is only needed to add the 20 dollar data plan. Once that plan is on, any csr can change it to the 30 dollar unlimited. I do it at least once a day.
Once any unlimited data plan is on, the billing system shows us all of the data plans available for that imei, 4g or not.

Not every unlimited data plan can easily be switched to HSDPPB unlimited. I had an old "SmartPhone Connect Unlimited" $20 data plan that pre-dated the iPhone. The data plan code was BNUN. It took me about 8 customer service phone calls, including 3 with supervisors, and ultimately approval and action by a senior level manager to get it switched to an unlimited 4G plan, because the billing system did not have that old plan listed in the system as one on the "gold list" eligible for HSDPPB. I had even tried going into an AT&T store to get the plan switched, and the rep showed me the system screen which did not have the option of making that switch.
My point is, in some cases you really do need to kick things up the chain of command to get it done.
This was posted before. It will NOT work once they do an IMEI dump. SO.. THIS is how it should be done. Yes, it works.
1) You must have an iPhone 2G, and a sim card that has never been registered to an iPhone 2G before
2)Register the iPhone 2G in iTunes.
3) Check online account to see if plan went through, or call 611 and confirm.
4) Use the phone for a day to show some usage
5) Put SIM card into your Atrix or whichever 4G device you'll be using.
6) Call AT&T and tell them you got new phone. You will be grandfathered in to new Unlimited data plan. $5 a month more.
5) Enjoy your unlimited data!
Again, if you use previous guide you will be put into a 2gb data plan when they do an IMEI dump and see you're using an Atrix on an Edge data plan. Activate Edge plan, then TELL THEM you upgraded. They may try to BS you, dont let them. They CAN and WILL grandfather you into an updated unlimited plan!!!
And you know this how...?

I know this as I did it 3 months ago.
Worked for myself and others.
This has been around for a while. Seeing as an incorrect guide was posted I figured id post the CORRECT way

That "other" guide was not incorrect. It worked for many users. Fyi. Worked for me just fine.

It will work yes. Until an imei dump. If you don't tell Att to upgrade you and they dump while you're using an Atrix on a 2G plan, they'll add a data plan but it won't be unlimited.
Okay, it wasn't incorrect... Just inaccurate and incomplete.
Sent from my CM7 Atrix.
It still works?
Does this currently still work? Just curious.

hello,
When you call in to tell them you upgraded to a new phone don't you have to provide the IMEI# of atrix? So they would change your plan anyways?

Several of us are very curious about this. What is your source? What specifically is ATT trying to change, and by what methods? I just ordered my 2g on eBay. I really hope I'm not gonna hit some new snag.

Bump.
Twanyneo, several of us would like to know what AT&T is doing about it. Or was what you said a lie?
Well, I just got my unlimited data today. So, there's that.

I guess he was lying. Thanks for the update. Enjoy your unlimited.
Oh, they'll throttle you after 10-12GBs...

I have the same question.
Yes, you provide the IMEI# of your ATRIX. but because you have the Iphone 2G unlimited data the computer grandfathers you in and they can upgrade your $20/month plan into the unlimited $30/month plan.
I am having an issue trying to activate the iphone. I got the iphone 2g and i wiped the data and plugged it in to itunes and itunes reconizes the iphone but does nto try to activate the phone. am i doing something wrong?
