will the G2 connect to a 3.0 USB port? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I connect my G2 to my PC, I get the message about how it will benefit from a 3.0 USB port. As far as I can tell the USB adapter it comes with isn't a 3.0 compatible cord. I was thinking about ordering one from Amazon. What do you guys think?

*UPDATE*
Looking at the connection, a 3.0 micro cable will not connect to this phone. Wonder why I get that message. I'm guessing that this is a misnomer my PC is throwing up.

My guess is this is just a generic warning Windows 7 likes to put out for anything it thinks might be usb 3.0 compatible

No other phone or tablet I have ever used has said this, even some new ones using Snapdraon 600 chipsets. My guess is that the Snapdragon 800 in our phones does in fact feature a USB 3.0 controller for it, but we probably just have the port for a 2.0 cable which is standard.

I am seeing the same error. Based on the color of the USB on the supplied cable, it is not a 3.0 cable. However, the device is 3.0.
I am having issues finding a USB 3 to USB micro (not micro B) cable. It would be nice to have when the time comes to start moving ROMs from the desktop to the device :laugh:

Did you see the pic I posted above? A 3.0 micro usb cable has extra pins and it's a different shape. The chipset might have 3.0 architecture, but the port is only 2.0. Maybe on a future model this might com about, but not on this phone.

The cable you posted is not what we are looking for. We need to determine if there is such a cable as a USB 3 to USB micro. This is different than the pictured cable, which is UB 3.0 to USB Micro B.
I do not have my stock cable handy, so I cannot remember if it is USB 3 at all. Is the plastic blue inside the USB side?

I think you're a little confused. You refer to "USB Micro" and "USB Micro B" as if they are different connectors. They are not. Yes, people commonly refer to it as a micro USB connector, but only because they don't know or drop the "B". The LG G2 has a USB 2.0 micro B connector on it. It does not have a USB 3.0 micro B connector on it. The cable pictured earlier in the thread is the proper USB 3.0 A to Micro B cable. Obviously, it won't fit in the LG G2, because the LG G2 does not have a USB 3.0 micro B connector. This does make it very strange that a computer would pop up a message saying that the device would work better on a USB 3.0 port when it doesn't have the necessary physical connector to support USB 3.0 but, well, sometimes technology does strange things.

What is a micro cable that's not a B? You mean a micro A?
The stock charge cable is not 3.0.

Can't you just check the transfer speeds?
The Lg G2 micro usb is not a Hdmi port, but it still supports it, through a MHL adapter. So maybe it also supports usb 3?

I am wondering if we can disassemble the phone and replace the USB board with a board that has a USB3 port soldered to it. Then of course also cut out the outer case shell to have a bigger hole. Wouldnt look as nice but it sure would be nice getting much faster speeds since both the chipset and storage system are easily capable of so much more.
Also, this is what a USB3 micro-B connector would look like on a phone:

The micro USB port is not MHL incompatible. It uses slimport like the Nexus 4.
Based on the service manual and the physical configuration of the port I believe that this phone has a USB 3.0 port, but we just don't have a cable or adapter yet to access the rear pins. Attached is a sketch I made showing what the port looks like. The service manual on page 468 supports the physical configuration of the port (3 pins on each side of central standard usb 2.0 5pins ). I am hoping the Nexus 5 will have this port and help LG push out the necessary adapter. I hope we can get some official confirmation on this at some point. I would use USB 3.0 for transferring or recording video directly to flash drive. There is also a potential for 4K recording like the Note 3. So big files would be common place while recording a 4K. 4K streaming from a G2 to a ultra HD tv has already been demonstrated at a trade show in August.
So yes, I believe a micro USB 3.0 port could be added, but by no means would it be easy, or look right. Best just hope for an adapter.

The LG G2 definitely does have a USB 3.0 connector, but unfortunately it is a proprietary non-standard connector. See my previous post. I can not find a cable with this strange new connector anywhere.

When they are saying its an A cable or B cable, they are really talking about the what the end connector will be. Think of the A connector as the standard usb connector you connect to your computer or to your wall charger. Then think of the B connector as the tiny usb connector you connect to your cell phone or tablet.
Companies sell A to A usb cables or A to B cables (which is what all cell phones use). A simple wiki search on usb will help clear things up.

You're saying it is USB3 compatible, then is this why the plug feels very tight to fit into the connection port? Sometimes it even makes a bit of a cracking sound, as if its not connecting properly, before finally fitting properly.
Looking into the connector, it does look a bit different from my Razrs connector.

That is probably for the most part because it new, but can't say for sure. My Google Nexus was getting quite loose, and I know it was tight in the beginning. It doesn't have anything to do with the proprietary USB 3.0 connector because if the plug is ever released it will be about twice as long as a standard micro USB 2.0 to reach the extra pins. I still can't figure out anything more about it.
Unfortunately from comparing various tear down of the LG G2 and the FCC teardown pictures of the Nexus 5, the Nexus 5 looks to have a standard micro USB 2.0. Definitely not as wide as a standard USB 3.0 and not as deep as the LG G2 proprietary USB 3.0 connector.

Still, there's something off about the charger on the G2. It doesn't match my Razr one, but the Razr plug fits in the G2. The other way around works, but is very, very tight.
Where did you find the breakdown of the G2? I've been looking but didn't find anything.

The service manual is at the following post, but only has schematics. Anything you find that I missed please let me know. The last page of the manual would have the detail we need, but it is only a draft and it is missing.

Am I the only one that is going crazy trying to figure out where we can find the proprietary plug/connector to fully utilize the USB 3.0 our micro-USB port?
It is also driving me nuts to see if 4K video recording will ever be possibly. I would like to record 4K directly to a USB 3.0 thumb drive.

Samsung USB cable Crap?

Since I have gotten the Epic I have had so many issues with windows seeing the phone and installing the proper drivers even right after restarting the phone. Im lucky if windows see's the phone one out of 10 times I have to plug unplug etc etc until my pc's see the darn phone.
So I caught a post earlier that suggested to try a different cable and BAMM!!! phone links every single time no issues. Im using the usb cable that came with my evo now. Just side by side you can see the huge quality difference.
Samsung might want to check these cables and I suggest if your having charging or communication problems with the phone to try a new cable.
Let me know if any of you are also able to reproduce this!!
Yes. My cable actually broke the 2nd day of owning this phone because it was tugged on a little too hard while i was using my phone with it charging. It wouldn't charge the phone unless it was being pushed upwards or held a certain way.

I've since been using my girl's MyTouch 3g cable and have had no issues whatsoever.
I just purchased a few new cables from monoprice. I've always had awesome results from them and they are cheap.
Yes the cable that comes with the epic should not be used with a computer IMO. Just look at the charger that plugs into the wall and compare it to the USB pins on your computers case.
The pins are raised a lot higher on the part that plugs into the wall compaired to how raised the pins are on my PC's case. I'm running an antec 1200 and I would consider the front USB ports to be really "tight". I then tried a different cable and have had no problems.......OTHER THAN BATTERY LIFE IN GENERAL sucks on the epic.

e computer side but I have been using my I mac since my pc took a dump b. i think the phone end of the usb cable is just crap.it seems to disconnect really easy and not near as robust as the one that came with my hero. Still love my epic though!

Come on. Both the cable and the wall unit sucks. A phone that is 500 bucks and you give me a .7 amp charger and a cheap ass cable? My HTC touch pro came with a 1 amp charger, that looked nice, and came with a good cable.

my cord works just fine.
However i only have one mini usb (the one that came with it) so i ordered some micro usb to mini usb adapters so i can use all my old cables.
Just order a bunch of microUSB cables from monoprice. It's like $1.20/cable. I ordered 7 so I have a large collection of easily lost cables.

+1 Look around, the Asus charger is rated at 2A and that's the "trick" for fast charging, modules/generic by others are often rated at .5A to .7A like those in (non-smart) phone days from Motorola & LG's or even Samsung's. The standard/universal micro-usb cable from HTC's are great (got like half of a dozen of them around) and their charger is rated at 1A and it will charge the N7 at a slower pace, but it's fine for overnight and so far so good, no problems (knock on woods - )
Oh, yeah, BTW - those generic ones from eBay or sold on Amazon as a bundle are just as good in that, they work too - dah dah. From what I know, practically all of these cables - branded or otherwise, are made in China ...
Do you have a cell phone? Most likely it uses the same cable. I charge my S2 and N7 with the same charger/cable combo. You can find one at almost any cell phone store.
Every USB Cable will fit as long as its a micro USB. loads of places sell them but eBay would be your best bet, PC World is a rip off

Cheap thin cables have significant resistance, and do not deliver 5 volts at one amp. If the drop is severe, the Nexus will go into slow charge mode, like charging from a PC.

I was also under the impression that the supplied N7 cable is a USB3 cable and the charger output is 5V @ 2Amps. If I use the original charger, I can substitute my Bionic cable and it seems to charge just as well. The supplied cable is quite thin compared to the typical usb2 cable.

USB3 is an entirely different kind of connector and has minimal PC support as of yet and is not backwards compatible. USB2 is almost universally supported by virtually every PC manufacturer.

AFAIK USB3 isn't entirely different from USB2, and actually backwards compatible. I have USB3 HDD Drive and can easily connect it to my old laptop or USB2 port on my PC. same with my USB3 card reader, i can use it on my USB2 with no problem. Downside just reduced speed, USB3 to USB2 will only reached max speed of USB2 capable of.
I have two USB3 ports on my desktop and they look nothing like the standard USB2 ports. I also have a USB3 hard drive and its cable will not fit anything but the USB3 ports on my desktop.
According to Tom's, there are significant differences even if you can plug one into the other.

The first caption in the article you list says "USB 3.0 Type A Connector. Yes, it’s backward compatible with USB 2.0." which contradicts your statement about your hard drive and cable. You may be thinking about the micro USB Type B connector for usb 3, which is a different thing entirely.

I am only going off what's on MY motherboard as far as connectors and they are visually different from the USB2 connectors. My USB3 HDD enclosure came with its own cable and the end that plugs into the USB3 ports on my MB does not fit the USB2 ports. Apparently, it shouldn't be that way, but it is.:silly:

I'm very curious to see what the connectors look like on your MoBo as I am not aware of any that have a non standard USB connector of any kind, as such a thing should not exist.
Would you be able to take a photo, for curiosity's sake?

I'm currently in L.A. until 2/26, so not until then. I was somewhat surprised myself because I assumed they would be backward compatible, but there is definitely something different on the USB3 end of the cable and on my motherboard that prevented me from plugging it into any of the USB2 ports.

Tighter USB cable

As I find the USB cable provided with the charger to be too short, I ordered a cheap 2m cable. This cable is quite tight if I want to push it into the USB port of my Nex4, so I was wondering if it is safe to use; are micro USB ports very vulnerable?

Micro USB is designed in such a way the plug wears out quicker than the socket (as it is easier/cheaper to replace the cable), so a well used plug may be loser than a newer one. Can you remember how tight the original was when you first used it?
If this new cable is tighter than the original I would be inclined to say do not use it. A cheap one is probably not made to the correct specifications and if this is the case it could damage the socket in the phone.
Buy cheap buy twice.

Thanks for your reply. It certainly is tighter than the original was at first, so I guess I won't use it for my phone then. It was only three bucks and most things I bought from China wholesales/warehouses were actually quite good concerning quality, so I don't mind it.

i had some weird 2 prong thing supplied..and its much thicker and transfer speeds are super fast...so im assuming its the usb 3.0 cable

Does Note 4 Micro USB Port have different dimensions?

This may be a dumb question but does Note 4 micro USB Port have (slightly) different dimensions?
I have a USB to micro USB cable I use to connect a stick to my HTC One X, S3, SamsungTablet, etc. However the micro USB wont fit into my Note 4. (or Note 3 and Note 2 as well).
I also have a endoscope camera with micro USB connector that fits all my micro USB devices except the Note 4 (it also does not fit the Note 3 and 2 as well).
Charging cables however fit all my micro USB connections.
So wondering if the Note 4 USB micro USB port is slightly different in size

Sup bro.. The issue is not so much the charging port size but rather the retaining clips in the port and on the charger tip.. There's a reason why Samsung suggests you only use the accessories that come in the box. Using other cables could have these clips oddly sized and can very well destroy your charging port over time..

Did you try without the case cover, in case you are using one. It could be stopping the usb from being fully inserted
