Tighter USB cable - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As I find the USB cable provided with the charger to be too short, I ordered a cheap 2m cable. This cable is quite tight if I want to push it into the USB port of my Nex4, so I was wondering if it is safe to use; are micro USB ports very vulnerable?

Micro USB is designed in such a way the plug wears out quicker than the socket (as it is easier/cheaper to replace the cable), so a well used plug may be loser than a newer one. Can you remember how tight the original was when you first used it?
If this new cable is tighter than the original I would be inclined to say do not use it. A cheap one is probably not made to the correct specifications and if this is the case it could damage the socket in the phone.
Buy cheap buy twice.
Regards
Phil

Thanks for your reply. It certainly is tighter than the original was at first, so I guess I won't use it for my phone then. It was only three bucks and most things I bought from China wholesales/warehouses were actually quite good concerning quality, so I don't mind it.

Samsung USB cable Crap?

Since I have gotten the Epic I have had so many issues with windows seeing the phone and installing the proper drivers even right after restarting the phone. Im lucky if windows see's the phone one out of 10 times I have to plug unplug etc etc until my pc's see the darn phone.
So I caught a post earlier that suggested to try a different cable and BAMM!!! phone links every single time no issues. Im using the usb cable that came with my evo now. Just side by side you can see the huge quality difference.
Samsung might want to check these cables and I suggest if your having charging or communication problems with the phone to try a new cable.
Let me know if any of you are also able to reproduce this!!
Yes. My cable actually broke the 2nd day of owning this phone because it was tugged on a little too hard while i was using my phone with it charging. It wouldn't charge the phone unless it was being pushed upwards or held a certain way.
Pathetic.
I've since been using my girl's MyTouch 3g cable and have had no issues whatsoever.
I just purchased a few new cables from monoprice. I've always had awesome results from them and they are cheap.
Yes the cable that comes with the epic should not be used with a computer IMO. Just look at the charger that plugs into the wall and compare it to the USB pins on your computers case.
The pins are raised a lot higher on the part that plugs into the wall compaired to how raised the pins are on my PC's case. I'm running an antec 1200 and I would consider the front USB ports to be really "tight". I then tried a different cable and have had no problems.......OTHER THAN BATTERY LIFE IN GENERAL sucks on the epic.
I didn't Realize there was a problem with the usb cable on th
e computer side but I have been using my I mac since my pc took a dump b. i think the phone end of the usb cable is just crap.it seems to disconnect really easy and not near as robust as the one that came with my hero. Still love my epic though!

Come on. Both the cable and the wall unit sucks. A phone that is 500 bucks and you give me a .7 amp charger and a cheap ass cable? My HTC touch pro came with a 1 amp charger, that looked nice, and came with a good cable.

Right? Well at least we got 16g sd cards. They have to give and take you know? lol
my cord works just fine.
However i only have one mini usb (the one that came with it) so i ordered some micro usb to mini usb adapters so i can use all my old cables.
Just order a bunch of microUSB cables from monoprice. It's like $1.20/cable. I ordered 7 so I have a large collection of easily lost cables.
How the hell did I not know about this site? THANKS

Nexus S Micro USB

Hey,
So I've been having a lot of problems with the micro-usb port on my Nexus S. I don't know why but it seems very loose and in order for me to charge I have to position it a certain way. The USB cable easily comes out. Is there any kind of fix for this problem?
Thanks

+1 for micro USB problem
The issue you raise with the loose microUSB majorly affects my opinion of this device & Samsung as a vendor. I am on my 3rd Nexus S, the first 2 being returned for loose microUSB issues each within a few weeks of use. Now I just put up with it on my 3rd. It isn't me, else all my other phones would have the same problem. My Nexus One still performs well, so I'm switching back to it now that I have 2.3.3 running on it sweetly. I hope Samsung is not the vendor of the next Nexus phone for this very reason.

I thought I had a problen with my usb port, but it turns out the OEM usb cables are not very good, or at least not very tight. I bought a few new ones at cable wholesale and they work perfectly and fit snuggly. You can probably find some on Amazon.
The charging port on my Nexus S is fine. I bought a GPS a couple weeks ago that takes a Micro USB as well, and when I have it connected to the computer and move it, it will disconnect. If I use my Nexus S USB cable, it's a nice fit.
So.. Maybe it's the cable? I'm also wondering if you were to ever-so-slightly bend the receptacle on the phone, would that help? Not that I would recommend such a thing, but I would probably do it.
I have a few cables from my older phones they're also very loose. I'll try some more. I don't have a receipt or anything so I can't even return or claim warranty on it. Could I maybe contact Samsung about this problem?
Funny I come across this. Just noticed mine is loose and needs placing just right in order to charge.

It's the cable. I've used the samsung cable for a while now, and just recently i used a new cable and it fits as tight as the samsung cable used to be
Coming from a N900 which the USB receptor broke apart from its board, I'd say its better to have a port which is a bit loose and allows the cable to move a little than a super tight port in which every bend of cable is passed and held solely by the soldering on the board.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Mine used to be like that too. But I think its just the cable because, now I use the stock Evo cable and it fits like a charm.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G
If it's still warranty I guess you can still try your carrier to replace the phone. I use my old cables from my Nokia N85 and it fits perfectly and grips tightly. The stock cable doesn't even support development
I'm led to believe that the main reason (or at least one of them) that manufacturers switched to micro USB from mini USB is that the sprung part which wears out is on the devices' socket with mini USB, whereas its on the cable with micro.

#[WARNING!!!]Do not charge the s6/edge with random micro usb cables

I bought my S6 about 1 month ago and since then I have charged it with different micro usb cables.Afew days ago the phone was showing random "top up's" on screen like "power sharing connected",Samsung VR" and yesterday I couldn't charge my phone .I have been to Samsung Care shop to see what's going on.I left it for 1 day to fix it.Thanks God I didn't root it and didn't break the knox to 0x1 and them done the service for free under warranty for 2 years by Samsung. The Engineer told me to not use foreign micro usb cables to S6 because it's different micro usb and it will break.I hope someone will listen to me and to not do whst I done. The normal price to replace usb port to S6 is £253 so be careful guys.

ok! and otg cable?
Any cable that is not Samsung S6/Egde original. Its need to be compatible with S6
USB is a standard and the connectors are the same but I agree that some cables might have different connector covers so it might push agains the case and force the usb connector.
On a side note you should black out your information. I can see your name, address, all your phone numbers, your phone serial/imei too...

Sorry that's crap.
A micro USB connector is a standard part, unless you are buying horribly cheap junk maybe, they will all fit fine.
I have used several cables and not hurt the phone at all.
I buy a kignstons usb duo 3.0 64gb for 22 dólars.... that's means I can't use in my S6?
using my OTG usb stick with the S6.... Works. It's a bull**** comment from the repair service...
Lets just hope this won't be an S3 disaster where the USB port was a weak point. My GFs S3 had the S3 USB port problem, where it would start charging very slow due to bad USB port and a week ago, stopped charging completly, unless kept in a specific angle. On my S3, all cables worked that I had, for hers, only 1 cable made a "good" connection.
the repair service has got it half right
regarding physical damage to the port:
what you want to make sure is that other USB cables don't cause stress to the USB port... as you may have noticed, different microUSB cables have different size plugs (the same microUSB metal connector, but the plastics surrounding it are different sized)... we must make sure our cases don't interfere with the cable plug (many case manufacturers only design their case with the original samsung cable in mind, which might not be big enough for plugs like the monoprice microUSB ferrite cable, which has a large rectangular plug)
all the above is moot if you don't use a case
edit: and update with a video to explain what i was mumbling about
regarding electrical damage to the port:
you'd be safe to stick with OEM quality USB AC adapters or other big-name (Anker makes a lot of them) USB AC adapters... but STAY AWAY from those no-name cheap china adapters!! those have poor power filtering, electrical noise, poor grounding, etc....
Just because it fits in the same hole and has the same pins doesn't mean it's compatible. Using a cable not made for fast charging on an S6 would be like trying to jump start a car with a lamp cord. It could overheat at the cable, connector or battery. That's why using the wrong charger or cable voids most warranties. Here's one such case, if you are interested:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/general/oneplus-one-melted-t3008581
The OP is lucky Samsung honored his warranty.
I call BS. MicroUSB is an industry standard. If they were not compatible not only would they not be able to call it that, but they would be subject to sanctions for violation the requirements for using standard cables ports of which the MicroUSB is currently is.
While you might not get the faster charge if you don't use their cable and their charger unless you are using very poorly made cables you will be just fine.
I charge my s6 most of the time with a BlackBerry charger for one of their discontinued tablets. 1.8A with 6ft fixed cable, I have 6 of them, they charge everything from tablets to phones. The white "short" Samsung cable and charger is in the box.

It is a valid warning, I live I EU and I think that I can trust shops here to sell me good product ... I use original mini USB cables for all my gadgets and all of them are the same but even dispite that on my ex phone I had flimsy connection due to some damage to USB port even I used original cable and I give credit to my using the phone during charging and the fact that most of us use our little finger as a stand and then the USB tend to move a bit and damage is caused...
The truth is that not all are the same as some are faster and some are not ... But in the meaning of just the metal part of actual connector they should be the same by law if EU ...
Considering that in mind the only rule in buying accessory like cables should be are they been through a regulatory channels ....

I use my Nexus 6 charger & cable works fine. Very fast charging on both. Buy OEM cables, a bit more but no headaches...
I use either Qi charging or at home I have uGreen mUSB cables.
No issues with any.
Nor have I had with any phone I've owned.
And I've owned a LOT of phones (probably change my phone a minimum of twice a year)
This is not correct, at all!
Micro USB cables are a standard and every cable should be good to use in the S6. I use 3 cables with mine: The original cable, my Tab S cable and some cable I have for years (from an Huawei X5 or a Moto G, not sure) and haven't had any problem what so ever! As said before, just stay away from the 0,2€ chinese cables.

Why did that happen to me then?i never used chinese cables.i have been using my genuine s4 and htc cable and the damage happened for 1 month after i bought it.so that will happen one day to someone else.if u have a look to the s6 usb port its a small difference between the other phones.it looks thinner. The engineer that fixed my phone advised me to use just S6 genuine usb to my S6.If you know all the Samsung S series have problems with usb port.

Usb c question

I purchased phone and they didn't send me a charger with North American charger but European style. So I'm using the wire they sent me with anker charger 4 port usb style.
The phone became very hot within 20% of charging. So my question is what's a safe charger to buy and a safe wire to buy as well just incase as an extra wire.
I gambled buying this phone I don't want to have any regrets. Please help. And guide me
Thanks
it should be no problem to use a different charger,
You can also buy an adapter for your charger eu to us

why would you buy another cable
The cable can simply supply the power that really does not burn.
but there are several cables you can buy,
You can also buy an adapter for your existing cables

I would be a bit careful with certain usb c cables as some may damage adapter (or pc if you charge it through that) if you read this article for example http://www.pcworld.com/article/3002...-google-engineer-warnswhile-naming-names.html
Theres a google doc which consists of safe cables

Annoyances of having Type C

Just wanted to rant about how the most universal USB port is still so un-universal. I went to my buddy’s house last night for a party, and my phone died like 20 minutes after I got there. He had a few micro USB cables, but no one had a Type C. I know it’s my fault for not having my own cable, but man, what a pain. I can’t wait until it actually is the norm.
I would say it was your fault for having a dead battery!
I bought a pair of adapters so I can use other people’s Micro USB. There’s a bunch on amazon if you just search for type c adapters.

I have the adapter at home that came with the G5, but I have it on one of my old micro usb cables. I know that if I took it off to bring to someone's house, I'd totally lose it and then be down a cable at my house. But that's not a bad idea. Maybe I should invest in some additional adapters to keep in my car.

in the past it was also the same when micro USB was released whiles everyone was using the mini USB, you will get this problem with a new standard adoption, you have to give it time, and as many has stated, type C has not matured yet.
Just picked this up.
USB Type C Adapter,*Spigen® [56k Resistor to Meet USB-C to Micro USB Standard] Convert Connector Compatible with LG G5, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, OnePlus 2, HTC 10, Apple Macbook [2-Pack] SGP11881 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01A1EUVHQ/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_LUjjxb41FXA46
Totally worth it for $8.
Sent from my LG-H830 using XDA-Developers mobile app
Any adapter will do, power drawn from a micro USB will not cause any harm to your phone, so these manufacture stating 56K resistor is just following the marketing plot to increase sales, but for a proper USB type C cable, a 56K resistor is needed.
I look at the S7 of mine that has micro USB and curse at why Samsung didn't put USB type c in it. I know why they didn't because of the Gear VR but it's really annoying.
I now have 4 devices that use type c and have bought loads of cables too to make sure I have no issues.
I love type c format. Very Apple like with the lightning cable but far more universal.
Yeah, we should never advance technology because it's inconvenient... LOL
I already have several compatible cables and chargers.
The annoying thing is manufacturer's aren't adopting it fast enough.
Just buy and carry a small adapter from micro-USB to USB Type-C. It is smaller than a cable.
The transition is always painful, specially for early adopters.
That's the whole beauty of having a phone with a removable battery. If I'm going out the evening, I swap batteries so there is no worry my phone is gonna die. If need be, I have a type c cable in my car. I bought several cables and adapters when I got the phone so I'd never be caught with a dead phone.
i always have an Adapter with me inside my Portemonnaie's coin section.
i also have three Adapters on fixed cables (work, bed, home pc) and use the LG cable inside my car since its short.
i have no complaints so far since this was not as expensive as buying new cables.
Sent from my LG-H850 using XDA Labs
Buy extra cables, I have the tech mattes that are spec'd correctly and I leave it in the car for the car charger so I'm never without a cable.
