Hi guys,
I decided to share with you my thoughts about Samsung Galaxy S.
Historicaly, in the last 2 years I owned HTC Tyt'n 2, iPhone 3GS, HTC HD2, and now Galaxy S.
Out of all these devices I have to recognise that the iPhone wad the most user friendly phone I ever have. Unfortunatly the fact my local cellular company doesn't sell it so after a re-softing to 3.1.3 I had to sell it....
I took HD2 because at that moment of time Galaxy S was not available. When it become available in Romania, last week, I quiqly buy it.
And now...... I am totaly dissapointed!
1. I can not use the embeded email client for Exchange and Yahoo accounts.
2. I had to serch and to install a separate Exchange email client, Moxier. It's ok but it has some limitations;
3. I installed the Yahoo email client from Android Market, but simply I can not use it!!! If I open it the CPU is going to 100% and the phone is working ver slow. So practicaly I can not check my Yahoo emails;
4. When I open for the first time an application, I wait arround 15 seconds!?! I saw on the forum that this is normal..... Strange.
And I can continue.....
What's wrong with this phone? My impression is that, simply it is not prepared for mass market delivery! Samsung doesn't care about their customers and it hurry up to launch it.
I saw how Apple react at the anntena signal issue.... Big difference! Samsung doesn't care that Google launch Android 2.2! How can they wait for launching it on their phones, when they have so big troubles? And we are speaking about the highest end phone in their portofolio.
I am still patient, but if I continue to have issues in my daily staff using the phone I 'll change it.

With the 2.2 Update, it's only barely come out officially. While its likely true that developers would have had internal builds to test out on, they only now have their solid base. You can see this with the desire being close to having it's froyo update to come out soon - looks like that we are going to be about a month or two past that.
I'm not dissapointed with this phone, love the interface so far, and the thought samsung put into things like divx playback.
I am a bit let down by not having it an easily to use device for development though.
For your mail woes, maybe you didn't do enough research.
It's common knowledge that only Froyo brings in Exchange support. There will be other apps, but until Froyo, there won't be any official google support.
For POP/IMAP (which'll be your Yahoo, Gmail and probably your Exchange if you ask your IT Support nice enough), look at K-9 Mail. It's fantastic. It's taken from the original mail client android comes with and built ontop, with things like IMAP IDLE (push) and some other very nice features.
My Galaxy S is simply fantastic, yes i have noticed a few slow-down issues, which i wasn't expecting, but the Samsung guys are working hard to fix them i'm sure, as are the hacker community here on XDA.
One thing i have noticed, where i am in London, i haven't seen a single advert for the Galaxy S. However they are selling really well, and getting very good feedback. I'm convinced Sammy did this to release the device, iron out the wrinkles, then attack it with Marketing. The hackers have already got the device running faster than a Nexus One with Froyo on it, with a slightly modded 2.1. Imagine what 2.2 will be like.
Simply amazing phone, don't regret choosing it over the Desire a single bit.
And FYI, Apples initial reaction to the Antenna issues were appauling, 'Don't hold it like that', is not the response you expect from one of the big 3. They are only now 'patching' the issue with a free rubber band, instead of actually fixing it.
You should try out k9. It's so much faster than the crappy stock email client. UI is good. You can refresh all mail account instead of having to do it one by one as in the stock. You an set up yahoo account whereas stock mail can't. There is a select all button for mass deletion, mark read, or mark unread, which is great. Performance is still slow compared to iPhone's but is way better than the stock. I also like the gesture feature to move from mail to mail like one would in viewing pictures. Try it. You might like it.
You may need a task killer as the phone multitasks really well, please consider that the phone will be like %150 better when froyo comes and for me this phone is a beast already

Yup yup yup, my experience is exactly the same as yours ...i also could not attache files on the email client program, although there is button that says 'attach files".
Yup it took long time for the email to start and download the emails....and everything else is slowed down.....
After having some more issues with the phone and the crappy GPS system.... i opened the map program and the gps initially showed my position on the map and as i moved , it didnt track my position, so after traveling more than 60km, i was still in my original position....
i just got fed up and sold the phone.....
everything about this phone hardware wise, the screen, big internal memory, 720p video recording, iphone style app browsing are very good, but when the basic function is as flawed as this, it just doesnt cut it....
K9 can attach files though. Just drop the stock mail client and half your problems are gone.

I cant help but to look a little suspiciously at some of the threads that have been started lately. There are a couple things that need to be fixed but the problems are not nearly has huge as they are made out to be. Not once did i have to wait 15 seconds for an ap to open. In fact after installing autokiller on the stock firmware the phone has been great with the excepton of the gps. The gps usually gets a lock quickly but it often loses connection for about 15 seconds or so making it impractical to use as a turn by turn solution. Driving for 60 miles with no lock is ridiculous, you are making things up or your phone is broken.

Yes i have a few issues with my phone, only minor ones but you show me an absolutely perfect smartphone without one glitch and i guess we can then shut XDA down and all buy that one. It ain't gonna happen
I reckon someone's got an iphone 4 and because they can't use it they spend their time trolling other phone users with ridiculous remarks like 15 seconds to open an app?? i can choose to fire up any app and i don't wait no more than 6 seconds. Use a task killer to clean up the back ground and that time drops even further. Even with the problems i am still totally happy with this phone
Either someone had a very faulty phone which is possible (in which case send it back) or you have an iphone 4 on the desk (not in your hand because it won't work )
Maybe hire goons from iphone.
How well did apple handled the signal issues? first they start by telling you that you are holding it wrong. Then until more fact comes out that the problem are design defects they decided to offer users cheap case rather than refunds.

I see that finally I succeded to open your interest with my thread. I already opened 2 thread regarding my issues but I got few answers.
It seems that, speaking about iPhone in this Forum, everybody become a litle bit nervos.
Anyway answering to kcharng and stickfinger I am not an iPhone boy or something simillar. I spent some money for Galaxy S! Do you think I am stupid to spend money senseless!?!?!
Anyway I got some hints from thes answers:
1. Obviously Galaxy S has an issue with the Exchange client. What I don't understand is why some phone's are working without any problem (I have coleagues which own GAlaxy S working with this feature) and other not! What can be different....
2. I will try K9 email client. I see that it has good referencies;
3. I will start to use an Auto Task Killer program. Now I am using Advanced Task Killer but it seems it is not so eficient. Can I get some referencies about an Auto Task Killer program and how this is working?
And one more thing: finally these devices should help you in your job and also bring you more fun, and not bringing you all the time issues to be solved....

Been using my sgs for a month now, and love it. Just rooted it and been using launcher pro from day one. Also a good task killer makes a big dif. Using it for sat nav have been a pleasure aswell. No signal problems here.
Using the app called auto memory cleaner. Works out of the box.

I have had the Galaxy S (vibrant) about three days, but have used it a lot.
First, as a behold 2 owner, I know that Samsung is a crappy company when it comes to support. If you are not willing to root and play with your phone, then I would def not go with Samsung. That said, they also make their phones the hardest to root. As I am sure the developers on this site are figuring out if they hadn't already.
I did decide to purchase this because of the phone already being rooted, I figured the community would have froyo on it within a month or two. Either way, I really like this phone.
I have not had any of the issues posted. A tad bit of lag when opening games, but other than that, even apps load instantly.
In short:
Samsung = Crap
Galaxy S = Best phone out with horrid customizations to android and firmware altogether.
I'd advise you not to base your opinion upon the expirience with the samsung galaxy i7500.
Since it's release, samsung already released 3 firmware updates, IN ONE MONTH.
They're working very hard to change their poor public image about software support.
I think it'd be wise to see what diraction this is going in before starting to judge them, and especially before stating stupid stuff like "Samsung=Crap"
regarding Exchange... i have a windows mobile phone, and not even itself works all that great with exchange
ironically enough, if i use gmail as my exchange server, everything works wonderfully.
now back to SGS, i'm quite confortable with K9 it works just fine and i can attach files
i think what you need to do, is to configure the "lagfix" that people has been talking about, that will solve half of your problem regarding speed
i'll also suggest to upgrade to the latest firmware

Just picked up my TF300 yesterday. So far I'm loving it!
Spent the evening configuring the device, installing software and apllying firware updates, etc.
You really need to let this thing sit overnight to properly "settle down" as the thing is quite finnicky out of the box. I made the mistake of clicking the "sync with google" account button on setup and it began downloading all 60 or so apps I've purchased from the Market (comw of which are specific to my rooted HTC evo or my HTC Flyer). Once that was done I spent some time uninstalling the ones I didn't want/need.
I bought the Best Buy 16Gb version. I'd have bought the 32Gb version if Best Buy carried it, but they don't alas, and I had some soon to expire rewards $$ that I wanted to apply to this. Also I'm a fan of their 18 month no interest financing (it's how I paid for the Flyer) and the fact that I can just hop on over to the strore if this tablet turns out to be a turkey and just exchange or return it.
But so far so good. After all my apps downlodaded I've still got some 12 Gb free storage, and with the micro SDCard slot I can add an additional 32Gb for movies and such if I want.
The only real bummers I've noted so far is that the Chrome Beta seems to get in a wierd state sometimes where it won't follow links, but instead asks if I want to open a new tab. Unfortunately, force closing Chrome doesn't seem to fix the issue. I've had to restart the tablet. Hopefully that was just a fluke, even though it's happened to me twice. Becaus honestly, I love having Chrome on this thing. Chrome is really Android's "killer app" for me. Having a desktop browser with full functionality (albeit lacking Flash) really turns this thing up to "11" if you know what I mean.
At any rate, that's my overly long story. You can color me happy, thus far.

Asus has been finding it to cause issues also. alot report strange things occurring after installing That app. I've been uninstalled it. ill wait till it updates to an official version out of beta before trying again. there are threads on it in prime section.

I find opera mobile to be the best by far. its the only one to give close to true desktop browsing experience. plus its the only browser That lets you upload files like on a regular PC browser, from your prime. its the fastest browser around, IMO. chrome is good but still needs alot of work. between everyone having issues, chrome browser was the thing THST connected everyone. even Asus has noticed this.

Opera Mobile is my browser of choice on the HTC Flyer and my HTC Evo, so I do like it. Unfortunately it has issues displaying certain websites, so I'm really looking forward to a final, stable Chrome build. I'll continue to use Chrome unless I find it causes too many stability issues on the Transformer.

So I decidedI'd try tethering my TF300 to my cellphone, and when I started the tethering app and opeed up the TF300 I found that it was already connected. I though it odd, given that I've got a WPA2 security on the phone. So when I checked the WiFi settings I discovered "memory" of all the WiFi hotspots I'd connected to previously with my Flyer.
That's pretty amazing (and a tad unsettling, to be honest) that Google had sync'd all that information and applied it to my TF300 when I updated.
I was also amazed at how quickly the TF300 recognized my wireless mouse. Plugged thedongle into the USB port, was expecting a chime or some "installing driver" message but saw nothing. The I bumped the mouse ad the cursor moved! Wow! (Also, the scroll wheel works just fine, though the right-mouse button seems to act as a "history back" button rather than a contextual menu, as in Windows.
All in all, I'm really digging this.

Hey guys, I'm new to the forums and I will be new to Android when my N7 ships hopefully soon.
I'm an Apple guy. I've had every iPhone and iPad. Currently rocking the 4S and iPad 3. Both on iOS 6.0 beta 2. I have also jailbroken every iPhone and iPad to customize it more, something XDA seems tailored to. I have never wanted to switch away from my iPhone because I enjoy it and honestly I haven't been impressed with many Android phone, until ICS. Now with Jelly bean 4.1, Android looks really solid, smooth, and mature. So I really want to give it a try. Again I don't want to switch phones and deal with all the carrier BS (bloatware, locked down, slow/no updates, etc) then Google unveiled the Nexus 7 for $200! So now for fairly cheap I can get a state-of-the-art Android device running 4.1, try a 7" tablet, and keep my iPhone.
So now my question is about unlocking/rooting the N7. With Android being as "open" as it is ie., being able to install non-app store apps, what's the benefits to rooting a Nexus device with no bloatware and the most up-to-date Android version? From my understanding the main reason people root their devices is to update their phone or to remove bloatware installed by the carriers.
Are there apps that you can only install if you are rooted? Are there more or less security issues with being rooted?
Rooting is awesome for many reasons, superuser rights (aka being able to play with files and commands that you don't have access to normally), but my main use for with a rooted phone is to freeze processes that I don't use, example i have handcent sms, so i usually freeze the sms client built into android.
Welcome to Android. I think you chose the right device to test the water. Not too expensive, while able to show off Android capabilities without the extra layer of crapps that manufacturers and mobile operators tend to add. I for one would be very interested in your first impressions and how you think IOS and Android compares over time.
In response to your question: some applications only work on rooted devices. Examples: Titanium backup, ROM Manager, some apps to get rid of ads within free apps, etc. But you don't need to root. I never rooted my tablet, and didn't find a reason to root my Nexus phone until very recently (for Titanium backup), but all my previous phones are rooted mostly to enable tethering, which is not disabled in the Nexus anyway.
After spending some time reading your post, the main reason to root in my opinion is to allow the installation of kernels and custom ROMs. Of course you can get some amazing apps through rooting, i.e. titanium backup and wifikill.
Making an experience tailored for you seems to be the main selling point of Android, and rooting allows you customization to the EXTREME.
I root my android devices to flash custom roms. Stock android is fantastic but teams like cyanogenmod and aokp take stock to the next level with tweaks that just add to the customization of the roms you are on. Some of the tweaks aren't mind blowing but still fun to play with. You can overclock your device to use all the processor's power, at the expense of your battery of course. You can use root only apps such as titanium backup or wifi tether. There are many more root only apps but those are the 2 off the top of my head. There are many advantages to rooting even if you are on a stock android device. just look around and do a little research see if you're interested Rooting isn't for everyone. I'm sure I'll write a review of the Nexus 7 after a few weeks, then maybe I'll do a Android from an iOS user post as well. Thanks for all the other advice guys, I'm sure I'll root it at some point just to try it, I'm a bit of a tinkerer.
I believe root is also necessary if you want to use otg usb storage with the stickmount app. This allows you to attach a usb/microsd card, greatly increasing storage space

I've had my N7 for a few days now and I'm really enjoying it so far. I really like the 7" size and the weight as compared to the iPad. Battery seems really good to. I have it rooted and working on getting a launcher setup that I like.
The app selection is TERRIBLE when compared to iOS, that for sure. I can't find a good twitter client or Google reader app.

I haven't had the opportunity to compare available apps in both stores, but I keep hearing that comment. I haven't had trouble finding an app when I needed one, of course that might be because I'm not aware of everything that could be available. As an examples, I don't know what you mean by google reader. An ebook reader? News reader? Search engine? Something else? I can't help with twitter apps, I never understood what people need that for, I never tried it... Too old I guess... But since twitter is well known, there must be one among the half million apps in the play store? Perhaps its not yet compatible with Jelly Bean?

Like you I have been using IOS (as well as Android.. so not totally new to Android at all..).. every iPhone up to the 4S
I think the arrival of the Nexus has brought over a few from IOS, JB has helped with that... the one thing I heard from many who complained Android wasn't for them was they found it "clunky" and not as refined as an IOS device, I think the N7 has changed and will change that perception.
As mentioned already you will find Android Apps not as good overall compared to IOS (my opinion anyway.. especially games if you are a gamer) but I think you will love that fact you have have more control of your OS (instead of waiting for the Dev team to release the lastest jailbreak using Redsnow etc..) and you can say goodbye to horrible bloatware iTunes lol
Have you tried to tether from iPhone to the Nexus yet?? Reason I ask is I had a Samsung tablet and my 4s wouldn't connect to it, something to do with being an adhoc connection (although I think there is ways around this..) I know my Galaxy Ace connects no probs and has a great speed while tethering to the Nexus.

I had problems tethering my N7 to my iPad 3, until I restarted the iPad. Since then its been working great.
For the other commenter, Google Reader is popular RSS feed aggregator. Basically its a way to see when website publish a new story, and you never miss an article. WWW.reader.Google.com

I understand now. You're looking for a news reader. I'm no expert on this, and only tried two of the following, but check out the links to reviews of what some consider the best news readers on android currently. Maybe one of these will work? Sometimes it takes time to find the best app, so keep looking if none of these are right.

also this is just aosp with google signatures,
i tested for fun, boot animation is crap,
some lag going n settings,
no playstore access, no gapps at all from what i saw,

I was intrigued by Copperhead since reading about the Unaphone, another Google free operating system. Unlike Unaphone, whom's developers were providing it only for their proprietary hardware, when I saw CopperheadOS I knew I was going to try it for sure!
Previously running Resurrection, my phone already had an unlocked bootloader. Even if it hadn't, flashing Copperhead using the developer's instructions is very easy.
First impressions were good. The phone was noticeably more responsive, lacking google services normally running, and stable since the OS itself is based on stock which was considerably more stable than other roms I've tried. All the features you would expect from 6.0.1 are present and working. What is not preset however is the Google Play store or services! I didn't appreciate the implications of not having google services before actually trying to use a phone without them. Although it is possible to sideload gapps, one would rather negate the point of this ROM.
Poking around the settings the first thing I noticed were granular security settings with detailed descriptions. There is also a nice security versus performance slider for the layman. The idea of preventing exploits using the techniques in this rom is my main reason for using it.
After an evening of use, the vast majority of closed-source-paid apps I was able to replace with open-source alternatives. There are a few exceptions I am still trying to figure out, but overall, I think if you are willing to cut the google-cloud-services cord its worth a try. If you really must, most apk's for closed apps can be found and installed but these decisions should probably be weighed carefully.
I never realized my reliance on google and closed apps until I tried to use an OS that doesn't rely on them. Trying this rom is a good exercise in living off the google grid; or at the least driving the use of google services back into the browser.
At the end of the day this rom has its place for the privacy and security minded enthusiast, but for the average user, sticking to something with google services is probably more realistic.

The 'offshore' part was simply a figure of speech.
What I mean is that if you don't trust google with your data, you have more reason not to trust an unknown company.

Installed it yesterday on a Nexus 5x and so far it runs great. It indeed seems really security orientated with no default root or GApps. Didn't try to activate xposed (which I hope will work) or related stuff yet but so far I intend to keep it.

Please let us know if you're able to root, install xposed and still relock the bootloader.

Could you please share some screenshots... Would like to try the OS... But would like to see how it is ...
Also do you see the sRGB mode in developer options... Without it the colors on the Nexus 6P are inaccurate at best...
Stop asking about features or customisation options, this rom has none. Its about security, not features

I never realized my reliance on google and closed apps until I tried to use an OS that doesn't rely on them. Trying this rom is a good exercise in living off the google grid; or at the least driving the use of google services back into the browser.

Thanks for sharing your experience. So we have decide if security is really more important than our investment and dependency in the Google ecosystem. I depend on G too much. My email is like my passport or online identification. I dont sideload unknown or unverified apps, dont visit links i dont know about, etc. Yes, i can still be remotely exploited, but i am not a gov official or some sort of millionaire with top secret info on my phone, as most of us. You saved me couple of hours of my day
A little update since I've been running this for about 2 weeks. I sideloaded gapps and the phone has been running fine, but found out today while trying to install the latest OTA update from copperhead it fails to install due to inconsistencies detected in the system partition since I installed gapps; from a security standpoint this feature is great. Unfortunately I can't function without gapps. In order to get the latest security updates, which is probably more important than the security features cooked into copperhead, I must: reflash the device with the latest full image, install twrp, sideload gapps, restore the copperhead recovery, then reinstall all my apps.
This being the case to get OTA updates, unless you can really commit to opensource with no gapps its not really worth the hassle.
Using it for an extended period I did notice the device was a bit slow even on medium security settings. Originally I had it maxed right out, but it wasn't usable. On medium it was a small price to pay for security but its hard to quantify the value.
I think its time to return to an AOSP rom for me.
I'm running it currently runs great but I can't figure out how to fix the dreaded APN issues :\ Tried almost every fix on XDA haven't gotten Any dev help either :\ other than the lack of data its a great ROM. Apparently I'm not alone judging by the other post on XDA about this. Apparently this is a known issue with no real fix. Sucks since its the only reason I got this phone

Hi everyone, Thanks for checking this thread out!! Just a heads up - I am pretty inexperienced when it comes to installing roms. I used to do it years ago with the PSP, ipod and some jailbreaking with old iphones (3/3g/4), but I haven't felt the need to do it since to any of my devices. So just keep in mind that I'll probably need a bit more detail in your responses to fully understand. That will be greatly appreciated.
I've recently restarted using my Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 (SM-T330NU) for reading - but that is pretty slow, laggy process. Every once in a while it's smooth but mostly, it lags and takes forever. I've taken out as much data and apps as I can which helped but it's still annoying to use.
So I'm hoping a custom rom would help but I don't know what would work - I see there is Lineage OS 17 available but it's not clear to me whether that meets my needs, whether it works on my device or whether it's the best for my device.
I want to be able to browse the web with google chrome, use spotify, youtube, google play books, dropbox, drive, twilight. Other apps like Netflix and docs/sheets/calendar/gmail would be great but not the main priority.
So is it possible to get everything I want? Most of it? If so, what's my best option and what limitations are present? Please advise. Thanks for taking the time to read!
