First Xperia Z review knocks S3 off the top spot

The first of many reviews has just come out, expect more over the next few hours/days:

Stamina Mode makes me want this phone even more but I'f I throw CM10 on there then I lose that option...

They claim that with stamina mode on, it drained ~1% of battery overnight... if that's true that means we'll have amazing battery life for those who use it more like a phone ( as in not very intense )

you're missing the point. They are comparing the phone which also means if you loved the S3, then you won't be dissapointed. It is a measurement to some on how much they may like a device. It isn't a boxing match between the two as we all know the specs on the XZ is far superior.

And when the SGS4 comes out it's no longer fair to compare it to the XZ, but instead you need to wait for the next thing from Sony, and so on. The XZ is going to be almost 4 months old when the SGS4 comes out. Consumers don't want to compare things that are unknown, but what is available at the moment of purchase, and right now the XZ is a better phone than the SGS3.

they should compare it to note 2, but overall the ZL is still looks like a all around better device, its 5" screen brings to closer to note 2 yet at much higher resolution and yet the phone size is even smaller than note 2 little brother the s3. Only one fully revealed contender is the m7, or the droid dna or butterfly j that are both already out.

I dont says that xz is not good, i think is wonderfull, and i dont like s3.
But is somehow stupid to compare to old device (when xperia s comes out, they compared it to s2).
Keep comparing to new devices. Even if Z or S4 win, dosent mather, cuz i will go for xz.

True for most sites...
But reviews from respectable sites like: Anandtech.com / GSMarena.com
Who actually objectively test things like sound quality, camera quality or power consumption instead of just giving opinions or marketing BS are really necessary addition.

Just played with the Z...

I must say, it certainly feels great in the hand! Premium feel like a certain fruity phonemaker's phones, not the cheap plastic of a certain Korean brand... The screen is gorgeously crisp, viewing angles are good, and the gaming and video playback is smoooooth
For those in singapore, there are 2 Z demo units at the Wisma Sonystyle.

It doesnt feel too big? I plan on getting this, instead of my iPhone 4. It's quite a jump from 3.5" to 5". Though I used to have an HD2, so it might just be a question of getting used to a much larger display.

I have a Nexus 4 which is a 4.7, the difference to a 5 will be minimal... most people I know that had iPhones and moved to larger Android devices had no complaints about it. Indeed quite the opposite...
The bets course of action is to go to a Sony store and see how it works for you.

I've got the droid DNA and the .3 or whatever is noticeable. I gave my gf my sgs3 and can't imagine going back. I know the xz will have on screen buttons so that will take some screen away but with gmd gesture control it will be all HD, waterproof glory

Goodness, I can barely imagine using a screen as puny as the iPhone 4 screen. That screensize I easily understand for budget phones.

how did u find the screen is it better than s3 cuz i saw videos between them and the xperia z screen was little bright ??

Exactly. Z's screen is beautiful and awesome. I find Super Amoleds disgusting (Personal opinion) I like true to life colors.

After a week with the Z I'm gonna say no. Go for the One or S4. But if you got your heart set on the Z then go for it. You'll get different opinions from everyone.

Battery, it drains like mad when in use. Its terrible compared to other smartphones out there. Screen is fine if you dont get about viewing angles. Its a good phone, dont get me wrong but I'm a heavy user and this phone cant get me through a day out so need to get something else. My iPhone 5 gets through the day and my S3 did. Not trying to put you off getting one, we all have different needs.

I see. I only ask because you were genuinely excited about the Xperia Z. Shame the battery couldn't live up to your requirements.
The battery issue won't be resolved unless OEMs stop competing for the 'slimmest smartphone' title and start slapping 3000mAh+ batteries on their phones ala Motorola
Samsung and LG do the same but only on their humungous phablets. Can't comment on the S4 but, as much as I dislike Samsung, i doubt they'll ever compromise on battery.

I know :/ I still love the phone.. I got the One on order but seems like its delayed. I don't want to get a Samsung again, same old like Apple. That's why I went for Sony this time but gonna try the One out and see how I get on with that.

I have a feeling that you'll end up with an S4 at the end with it's 3200mAh or so battery. Although early reports indicate the the HTC One has slightly better battery than the XZ - mainly whilst watching videos ( 8ish hours vs 6ish hours, as per expertreviews).

Hey guys. I am getting top battery life with mine 2 days plus phone calls music games internet all you need to do is to underclock with setcpu app juice defender plus another launcher e.g. Launcher pro not stock

thank you all guys I heard the note II has an amazing battery life

Battery life on the z could be better but it's comparable to S3 and Nexus 4 so I'm happy. I'm getting a charging dock or two and my car charger is 1a and charges the phone on AC so I'm more than chuffed as all my other phones only charged up to max 650ma on USB charging mode.
As for the one, battery life will be as awful as every other HTC released and the 4mp camera will be useless unless you only upload to instagram or Facebook.

Battery life is comparable to Nexus 4, but not to SIII, that one has much better battery life. Of these three I like XZ the most, but all of them have their pros and cons.

The screen is amazing, blazing fast, multi tasking is great because of the multi Window modes and pop up apps, feels great in the hand.
For the first time ever, I feel like I can get a ton of work done on my phone.
For those of you on the fence... Go try one out at a store. You will not be disappointed.

bought the s4 and i tried the 5s for the past 2 weeks, both phones did not make me as excited/ kiddish as the note 3.

You will love the look and feel of this phone. The weight is perfect so it doesn't feel like a brick (LG Pro), speed is fast so it doesn't get the lag (S4), big without being too big with bezels (Sony Xperia Z Ultra), OS is complete butter so it is fast (Moto X), while it lacks the external speakers (HTC One) it makes up for it with better sound quality when using head phones. Camera is excellent and video doesn't have focus issues (LG G2). Hope that explains it a little better and compares it with every new phone out right now. I have owned all the phones and didn't mention the Lumia 1020 (great camera, terrible battery and OS missing apps), Xperia Z (love the waterproof but camera terrible, Xperia ZL, same as Z, S4 Active had excellent screen and all around better than the Sony Z line for me. iPhone 5s was same as 5 for me even tho I did like the fingerprint unlock and faster burst mode camera (but not worth the upgrade IMO). I am. I've been watching people in the international N3 post what an "incremental" upgrade the N3 is over the N2. It's night and day. The look, feel, updated Samsung apps, the fluidity. I'm pretty happy. I haven't gotten it all set up yet and will post something more detailed once I do. I'm coming from an international N2 and was terrified what AT&T would do to their version. All of their apps can be disabled except for the Mobile Hotspot app which I'll need anyway. And I haven't found anything missing yet except the ability to disable the Mobile Data connection. So far so good.

Where are you guys getting the phone from? AT&T says I have to wait until tomorrow.

I pre-ordered. It was delivered FedEx about 1:00PM today.

we got our stock and demos in last night.. im in love. considering selling my s4 for this badboy now.
it definitely feels super nice in my hand, compared to the note 2. my first thought was, it felt like the original galaxy s2, the squarish feel. didnt like it right away but it has grown on me.

how does that plastic leather feel in your hand? Looks so cheesy in pictures..

i love this phone! also. i had it since OCT 2nd. and the pleather really does feel leathery . atleast ont he black version

This phone is most certainly an awesome upgrade. Just picked mine up last night in black. It's definitely more premium feeling as well, even though it's still plastic. Samsung did a great job with this device and i cant wait to start rooting and ROMing this phone out

Well. So far so good. It's a whole new world for me. I left Sprint for At&T after being with them for years. I'm on my first real Samsung phone after having every HTC since the Hero. I'm liking this phone a lot so far...but I do hope root access is gained eventually. There is a lot of carrier bloatware crap on this phone I'd like to ditch.

Happy new phone day everyone! Woohoo, am I psyched to play with my new phone. Now if work would just stop getting in the way of me having fun....and there was a custom recovery and root access...that'll come in time though, I'm sure.

I was amazed how light it is for the size, and the screen really pops. I look back at all the hand wringing about the PenTile display and realize how silly it was. Looks incredible.

I saw many users unhappy, others happy, then I opened this thread to know where it will goes.

Hi @eclyptos. I've been happy with Z1 since the day I bought. It may not be perfect but it is a big leap fir me coming from an Xperia acro S. I just wish that Sony could've waited at least IFA this year to release the successor of Z1 as the 6-month cycle makes the current flagship behind sooner (now I know the feeling of Z owners haha). Though I know and everyone knows that tine will come there will be new and greater ones coming. Again it's just my thought, I hope no one will react violently. And again my obly wish is to have at least most of the Sirius' features will be available on Z1 once it geta the 4.4 update.

I'm very happy... all I need is in only one device.... But the camera can do better... I think it's a software problem and Sony have not the capacity to resolve the problem

I can't help but wonder, why do I have to pay about 500 Euro (contract free) for a flagship with a disappointing screen when I'll have to pay the same sum for a flagship with top-notch screen in a month or two... Viewing angles don't bother me as much as the yellow tint and the fact that White balance, although improving things, impacts the brightness and contrast in turn. And, what drives me mad, the user is supposed to (partially) fix something that shouldn't have got past Sony's quality control in first place. White balance should be used for fine adjustments according to each one's personal preference and not for fixing a faulty display altogether. So, after exchanging 5 Z1 devices, each one suffering from yellow tint to one degree or another (some of them even from dead or stuck pixels), in a blind hope of getting one of those "unicorn" units with a Z Ultra-alike display, I am finally throwing the towel. I'm glad I can still return the last Z1 I have gone for. It could have been an EPIC phone to cherish and remember but just because of the poor screen it isn't. It's a good, decent device but I can get that for half the money. I'll wait for Z2 or whatever its name will be, and if Sony provide the same "display lottery" disgusting experience with it, I'll go for another brand, as much as I don't want to.

but i could not find any other devices better than z1
so just bought it again and now i am happy knowing that the z1 is the best out there

I'm happy with my z1 for now and will stick with it for few years.

Display was improved with the implementation of Withe Balance on .136, did you try it?
I got a lot of improvement in Pictures, specially in Low light, after update to .136 too.
BTW, sorry to hear that.

Friendly? i don't know..
Open? Until Z1 will live .

Happy with:
- Picture quality in good lighting conditions
- Build quality
- Design
- Light and useful UI
- Expandable memory
- They put the charging pins to not have to keep opening the flap
Not happy with:
- ASF (for the Love of God, Sony, just put a highly scratch resistant tempered glass that's more scratch resistant than the glass under the ASF)
- LED flash when using it as a flashlight - it's very weak
- Allowing T-Mobile US to lock the bootloader
- No brightness slider in the notification drop-down or (not allowing more quick settings to be used)
