[Q] 4 gigs missing? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does this make sense to anyone? My device shows 1.08gb free space, but I only have about 7.5gb in occupied space. What's screwed up here?
Its a 16gb Nexus 4 running CM 10.2, the latest nightly.

4gb is allocated to the system.

Did you do a factory reset before going to cm10?
EDIT: Can you please take a screenshot of settings-storage. It should look similar to this

How many nandroids do you currently have?

13.24 GB does that include application too? or if that's internal sd card how much free memory you get for application?
On android 3.0+ there is no longer separate partitions.
You have the full space for your apps and app data.
the /sdcard is emulated on the internal memory for app data and apps can use the full 5-13GB of storage space.

Space usage of latest ROMs on a 8GB Nexus 7

I'm still using my 8GB Nexus and I'm currently on a 3.x version of Clean ROM. I'm looking to upgrade to a newer ROM, since they seem to have a ton of nice features and built-in ways to customize the ROM to an individual taste. My concern is that I can't find any information on how much space a ROM uses. Is this because they are all slimmed down vs stock or is everyone assuming the 8GB Nexus 7 has gone the way of the dinosaurs?
Does any one have a suggestion on which ROMs use the least space?
I'm currently looking to try the following ROMs, any concerns regarding space usage?
- [ROM] [April 20][4.2.2][SmoothROM v5.1]
- [ROM] [May 2][CM10.1|4.2.2] JellyBeer-v4.18
I'm open to other recommendations. TIA!

Roms won't take up the storage that you have. It will overwrite the system with the new ROM. That space is reserved only for the rom.

Well, given that nobody has yet managed to crack 'nvFlash in APX' mode, there is as of yet no way of resizing partitions... so I would assume that devs. (regardless of ROM or device) are forced to work within the same 640Mb system partition size limit... which essentially is where the ROM 'lives'.
Checkout this simple diagnostic - DeviceInfo - http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jphilli85.deviceinfo.
Here is what my 16Gb Nexus 7 is showing...
670 826 496 bytes - SYSTEM PARTITION (Around 640Mb)
14 215 020 544 bytes - DATA PARTITION (Around 13.24Gb)
These figures haven't changed from Stock to the ROM I'm currently running.
I suspect your 8Gb Nexus will show an identical SYSTEM PARTITION size to mine, but a smaller DATA PARTITION.
So, I think you're free to flash whatever ROM you want.

Ged.

Thank you both. I went ahead and installed Smooth ROM and had no issues with free space. Thanks for your help.

Help me with some simple math...

16 GB phone - 12.6 GB usable when I did a fresh SD wipe = 3.4 GB to be accounted for...
Please don't tell me that the Android OS is taking up 3.4 GB...
On the 16gb version you should have about 12.9gb free after a complete wipe.

You should have 12.9gb. That's how the position is made. For system, dev, cache and so on. Not all of it is used up. Some free space is still left depending on what system apps you have, how much goes into cache and so on..

[Q]more than 24,8 GB of space

I have the 32GB version D802, rooted, with pardus HD rom v6. SD card total space is 24.84. Is there any way I can increase the total space available on the device? I know you're not supposed to get the whole 32GB, depending on the filesystem, however I think losing almost 8GB of space is ridiculous. For example, the 32GB version of the IPAD mini leaves you with 28GB of user accesible space.
Yea but iPad is not the same as android the os is themed highly compared to stock aosp and takes about 4-5gb then there's bloat and android reserves about 2gb to install apps from play store

So there's no way, huh ?
Install cm that has a lot less bloat

I uninstalled many bloatware/system apps using titanium backup pro and it doesn't increase the size of the storage. I think it has to do with the partitioning of the storage, which 7.2, where all system file is stored, with some allowance so that if you manage to full the storage the phone will not die. I'm just guessing. LOL

For whatever reason LG decided to set up this phone. The way they did that wont do any. The system partition will stay overly large even if you do use a smaller Rom.

Yep. It is annoying. Strange having my old 32 GB galaxy nexus having the full 28 GB but my far newer G2 having only 24.

First of all: Phone's tottal memmory is 32 000 000 000 bytes which devided by 1024 = 31*250*000 KBytes, which /1024 = 30*517 MBytes, which /1024 = 29.8 GBytes TOTTAL Formated space !
Free Space for user is ~ 24.8 GB
Which means that ALL the partitions in phone's memmory (apart form SDCARD partition) combined are ~ 5 GB
In this 5 GB you have ROM (~2.5 GB), Bootloader, Recovery partition...
But, not all the partitions are full with data, they all have some free space in them, but that free space is not populated to phone tottal free memmory because it is not accessible by the user
Just found this thread about resizing the system partition. Kind of a taboo subject i guess. No one is giving a positive answer.
My very first Android device, the NOOKcolor 8GB, 1st gen, so technically, 'bout 7GB, they reserved 5GB for system and data partitions, left us 2GB for end-user storage.
Yeah, enjoy that.
Good thing was there was a way to re-partition.
For the G2, I haven't heard anyone mentioned about how to.

IOS is different to android. They have different apps and config that contribute to system space of the phone.

Data partition error.

I am on cm12.1 beta 4 and my internal memory should be about 2Gbs but its only showing 0.98 GB and I hardly have any space for installing something.Urgent help would be highly appreciated.

That's not an error, the space is taken by system.
