Hey guys,
With All this Warranty talk, the people who unlocked your bootloader. Do you regret it? Was the warranty worth sacrificing for custom roms? I want to unlock it but at the same time I keep getting these paranoid thoughts that I'm gonna need the warranty later on. WTF. Any help?
You can install custom roms without unlock bootloader. I have evil nxsense rom installed in my N1 without unlock my bootloader.

HTC honors the warranty even with the bootloader unlocked; I can't say that I've needed to make a claim myself, but that's the consensus from majority of members on this board. So, my advice is just go for it.
I had the same doubts as you, but you won't regret it

Agree with this. Although I've never had to make a claim either.
I unlocked mine as soon as I pulled it from the box back in January 2010. I have had no regrets about it at all. I have never needed warranty service, though I wouldn't hesitate to call HTC for a hardware related issue. If something went horribly wrong with a ROM flash or a radio upgrade, that would be my own fault and I would look into buying a new phone. But I wouldn't try to BS HTC to make them pay for my screw-up.

I have made two claims with my unlocked bootloader. Each has been hassle free and quick. Oh, and cost me nothing.
First, a few months ago for dust under the screen, repaired and sent back in 4 days.
Second, which was last week for power button issues. They received, repaired, and shipped back in one day. I got it back the next.
HTC is quietly brilliant.
thanks guys! i may actually unlock the baseband than.
is unlocking the baseband more beneficial than just doing a root without unlocking?
btw, so you guys think its better to safer to send it in and get it repaired if you have a unlocked baseband than the riskier "swap" (when they send u a new one and you send your old one in) method?

hey, did they send it back to you with a locked bootloader?
First time they relocked it.
Second time, they left it unlocked.
ROOT is fine

I don't see any point in unlocking boot loader while you can root the phone and do whatever you want. the only thing you can't directly do is to flash a partition usion bootloader commands but you still can do it if you use "flash_img" command in ClockworkMod Recovery (on the adb shell). I install different roms and I am on CM7 now.
I unlocked mine without wanting to. I flashed modaco rom and it just unlocked my boot loader. but there is supposed to be a way of locking it again. it's somewhere on xda...

Yeah, I like posters that don't know what they post.
1) No ROM can unlock the bootloader. User has to do it and the system has to ask for permission.
2) Once unlocked, it can't be locked, only by HTC.
To the OP: I've unlocked my bootloader long before "non-unlocking" way has been found. Never cared for it since, didn't need the warranty, and it's going to expire soon anyway.
Yes mine unlocked, and I have no reason to regret it, as my phone is a freak that can be locked again.
Worth doing in my opinion, and even if I couldn't lock it again, I still wouldn't regret it.

Mine is locked, but there are 2 goods reasons to unlock the bootloader:
1. Once the bootloader is unlocked, you always have a rooted phone. The next ota won't relock it.
2. You have more options to fix a potentially bricked phone.
I'm thinking about doing it for these reasons, plus it seems like HTC still honour the warranty.

I unlocked my bootloader because the warranty was gone anyway. Put the nexus into the washing mashine . Somehow it survived (Bluetooth, radio and camera gone). It actually was pretty tough. after about 10minutes in the mashine (60°C) the screen was still having fun inside the mashine.

1. Well, if you wanna update ota, you don't have reason to root your phone in the first place.
2. what more options exactly you have? simple, do not mess with HBOOT and Recovery partitions, and ur safe.
My opinion, use oneclickroot and don't risk it, cause HTC support behave deferentially now!

Obviously you have no idea what you are talking about.
Read my previous post, HTC has the best customer support & service I have ever received.

I recently bought a Nexus 7 and have a Sony Xperia S. Sony will not repair your device for warranty if you unlock the boot loader as your DRM keys are lost forever. However I've looked at a few topics regarding this and can't seem to find a straight answer regarding the Nexus 7 as some say it does void it and others sag it doesn't.
Do Google care if you unlock the boot loader as I received the C80 model and read that lots of people are still having issues. Thank you for your time.

Yes, it states everywhere when you try to root that "This may void your Warranty"
What they mean by "May" is that they will use this as an excuse not to honour your warranty if they decide.
But if you can prove that it is a hardware fault, not in anyway caused by you rooting it then they will honour your warranty.
Hope this helps
Yes. Pretty much when you mod a device you aren't covered by warranty.

As far as I know, yes. But you can always flash to stock ROM. It will bring your warranty back.
Flash stock in fastboot, fastboot oem lock.
Of course if your device is broken then flashing stock might not be possible.
Just want to know if unlocking bootloader will void the warranty?
The Nexus 4 says it "may" void warranty, as seen below.
On this video /watch?v=532sQpllDl8
at 1:40 mark, it says " Unlock bootloader (may void warranty) "
Can anyone shed some light on this?
If it were to unlock bootloader (to install custom roms), could you relock it so they wern't to know and
would this void warranty for future hardware problems if any occured?
Unlock your bootloader may void your warranty...but after you've done this, you can change the recovery, root your phone, change your ROM...
You can even restore the original ROM, restore the factory recovery and relock your mobile:angel:
As long as you return the phone to stock rom relock your bootloader your warranty is good

Is there a way of them knowing you ever unlocked it? There were reports that "Samsung"? or someone knew if you did it but unsure if they actually cared.
And on a different note, is this phone do you know already rooted?
It basically means that if your device is broken due to modifying the software then the warranty won't cover it.
Warranty is still covered in defects caused not by you.

It will not come pre-rooted.
You could unlock the the bootloader, allowing you to write to the system partition and then root it. Most will unlock bootloader, load custom recovery, and then just load a pre-rooted ROM.

So flashing a new Rom say cyanogenmod will already make the phone rooted once I've unlocked bootloader? Didn't know that, ta

Although it is definitely possible for a rom to be non-rooted, I doubt you'll see many (if any) roms like that since they are generally pre-rooted.
CM is rooted
Hardware damage that is not your fault e.g. backlight driver blows is covered under warranty even if bootloader is unlocked. Unlocking the bootloader voids the software warranty only.
Or atleast thats what I understand.

Oh, the nexus 4 doesn't have the stupid "YOU OMG UNLAWKED THE BOOTLAWDERS AND NOW U DIE CAUSE I IS SAMSUNG ANd NO WARRNATIES EBEN THO I BRUK THE PHONE CAUSE I DO BAD QWALITY"?
O: gasp.
so i am thinking of changing my htc one x to a nexus 4 mostly because of the pure android and htc's attitude to developers. i have found a used one which is unlocked. would that be a problem with the warranty? when i unlocked my htc obviously i voided my warranty..
You can always unlock and lock doors..you just need the key.

As the topic name suggests, is there any way to unlock TN7 without unlocking the bootloader? I just bought this 4 days ago and don't yet want to void my warranty.
A much bigger question that arises in my mind is WILL IT BE POSSIBLE IN NEAR NURTURE THAT ROOTING WILL BE DONE WITHOUT UNLOCKING THE BOOTLOADER?

Nope. You need the bootloader to have fastboot access. So you can grant root access via fastboot. There is no other way to input commands other than bootloader screen. If u got it from newegg.com the accidental damage coverage will cover any issues with being bricked or damaged device. Trust me having root on TN7 is awesome! I enjoy those features on this tablet. The little things About root out weigh the bigger things aka warranty.

if BL should be unlocked to get fastboot access how did my xperia u got a root method that didn't want any unlocked bootloader?
Manufacturers all make devices different.

I guess a better question then is how did that weird Chinese program root our tablets on 4.2? It didn't require doing anything at all to the bootloader.

does the 4.4.2 OTA lock your bootloader n restore recovery?

Are you saying that when we first got the Note 7 on 4.2.2, they were already unlocked? Then we unwittingly locked it back via the 4.3 OTA? If that's the case, why can't we just use the same method to unlock it back without voiding the warranty?
EDIT:
Another question: Can I make an update.zip and use the stock recovery to flash it without having to unlock the bootloader? The idea being that I want to flash a fix so that I can have write privileges to my sdcard while I still have stock Kit Kat without root.
I am expecting my Pure tomorrow. Normally the first thing I do is unlock the bootloader then root. After reading about the speaker issue, I am hesitant to do that.
Is there a good test for the speaker to see if the problem exists? Anyone return a phone with a bad speaker and an unlocked bootloader? Does it make a difference if I have or don't have the extended warranty?
Thanks!

If it is a hardware problem they will still replace it.
Just unlock it when you get it. Motorola despite the official stance they have posted generally doesn't care if you unlock the bootloader. Your best off doing it right away as doing it wipes all the data off the phone.

they post it officially but yet dont follow what they say, according to you? so if I or him unlock the bootloader and need warranty, and moto say no warranty, then what?
