I noticed the battery life on my I9505 has been getting worse recently, even though i've been using it very infrequently, sometimes it's just sat untouched for 4+ hours while i'm working. I looked at the battery stats and while the "screen" is usually at the top, "media server" is usually second, taking anywhere from 10-20% of my battery, when i look into this, it lists "stay awake" as the amount of time the phone has been off charge, plugging the phone in will stop the time counting up but the moment i unplug the phone, the timer continues to count up. Battery stats plus also shows the media server to be keeping the phone awake.
I've removed all my music and also pics + video from the phone as suggested elsewhere with media server problems and corrupt files, but this has had no effect.

I have just tried something that may have worked...
I have always tried to stop any Samsung store apps from updating or running, but i read that there was a media scanning issue with samsungs music hub or something, i just let all the samsung apps update through the samsung hub and then rebooted the phone, the media server isn't running any more.
I'm going to use the phone like usual for another day to see if this has actually worked.
I had the same problem today. My phone lasted only 5 hours and media server was on top of the list after listening to music. I think it has to do with Samsung's music app because that's the only time I notice significant battery loss.

Do you have an external SD inserted? Such cards can also keep media server (/scanner) running if there is a corrupt file on it. If so, either format the card and/or root the phone and use RescanMediaRoot to disable the media scanner service altogether.

No i don't have an external SD. I haven't had the problem today for the first time in about 3 weeks, so i think letting the samsung store update all the apps has fixed it.
Meda scanner stay awake time is 23 miinutes today after 8 hours use, before that, it would have said 8 hours.
Use Greenify and hibernate your music app and see if media server is still appearing in BetterBatteryStats

Hi folks,
I have bought touch 3452 3-4 days back... what i observe is battery drains off quickly. if i charge at night and listen music for an hour in morning, battery drains from 100% to 70%. with 2-3 calls and little operations, till afternoon, it discharges to 55%....
Is this the problem with 3452 or only for my piece... anybody facing same problem???
Hello fella!
After i send my Elf for repair to my guarantee they keep my battery for 4 weeks discharged! Now my Battery has not even 25% of the power it had before It needs very long to charge at 100% but after listening music for an hour its almost empty!
I already made a thread on the accessories section for anyon interessted

Hi dude....
when did face battery problem?? just after repair or even before it also???
My cell is 3-4 days old, so for a new phone, it could be quite unlikely problem !!!! thinking of getting piece replaced (though chances are close to 0%)
My battery was fine and quite reliably before... I guess you judge a bit to quick about your new battery! Charge it at 100% and discharge it to about 10% and repeat that procedure for about a week! A brand new battery has not the full capacity at start and needs some cycles to get "in life"...
Good luck!
as sercio said above, use the battery to its lowest level (before reaching the yellow line), turn it off, then recharge it.
do this procedure about 5 times, then your battery will be fine.
but dont worry, it's a normal thing.
battery really discharges very fast when listening to music, or using bluetooth or wi-fi.
Also make sure that when you are closing apps that you are really closing them and not letting them run in the background. The task manager is set up as default to only minimize when you tap the X - Go into your task manager settings and change this to close on X or make sure that you go into your task manager and really close all applications that you don't need running anymore.
You might want to adjust your backlight settings as well to save on power
Some applications are heavier on battery then others as well. Check and see how each application uses battery. I know from what I have been using that some applications use the battery really heavily so much that even using for 5 minutes will drain 10% of the battery. Be careful with what you use on your device. WIFI also uses a lot of battery; however, you can adjust this as well under WIFI settings - You get less performance from your WIFI by doing this though. When listening to music - if you don't need the backlight on - then let it shut off. S2P automatically turns backlight off after a bit - TCPMP = you can set the backlight off manually and still use the hard keys to switch songs and play with volume - You can map the hadware keys manually.

i hav set option of closing apps to 'close on X'.
also i dont use wifi n bluetooth.
I listen music using TCPMP.. i dont know if TCPMP is consuming more power...
yesterday i barely listened to music for 1 hour... then was browsing thru MS excel and calendar... still battery drained to 10 %
as suggested by other folk (above), i hav done this cycle of 100% to 10% n charge again 4 times already...
still wondering if i start using wifi, how soon it will discharge.. !!!!
I m planning to go to shop where i bought it from (CHROMA, tata enterprise) to ask for this prob.... but i m sure he will turn down any request regarding replacing battery
if draining battery is common problem with all PDA-touchscreens (and not only with my piece), then i shud better keep quiet and keep charging it frequently..
based on what you are sayin - your battery should not be draining that quickly. If I was to only do what you say you are doing - I would only loose maybe a little bit of battery life - like one hour a music using TCPMP or S2P are all roughly the same - might be about 5% loss of battery - as long as I turn off the backlight. One hour of internet browsing usually about 7% to 10% loss for me on my Elf. Listening to internet radio for one hour with backlight turned off usually about 7% battery drain for me. Watching a half hour episode of southpark using TCPMP usually drains about 6% of the battery for me. When I leave my phone in Standby - I can leave it for a whole day and the next day turn it on and it is still at 99% or 100% still. (depending on whether I received any texts etc...) I have never noticed how much a phone call drains the battery. Never checked that.
Keep in mind. I am running Ultimate Launch and all my today plugins that I use are on different ultimate launch pages. My main ultimate launch page has no plugins and I have it set up to disable the plugin if it is not visible - (Therefore no resources required from device and no power required from battery) unless I go to view the page with those plugins. My main ultimate launch page has no plugins (Just shortcuts) so no extra drainage of the battery required to run that page. IF you have alot of plugins displayed on your screen, running at the same time - you will see your battery draining quicker and then running apps is extra.

I installed abcPowerMeter for checking current consumption..
It shows wierd results. sometimes with no apps running, it shows 120mA and other times 196mA.
While playing TCPMP songs, it sometimes shoots above 200mA and sometimes no change in previously displayed value..
I manually obesrved that i talked on call for 4 mins and battery drained by 3% (71% to 68%). similar for other calls.
I have no plugins on home screen except HTC Today.
Also i observe that playing with MS excel or explorer even for an hour drains battery by more than 10%...
I am clueless if my battery is faulty, or my piece is faulty or P3452 itself has this battery draining problem
hmmm? Do you have constant data connection? I don't have a data plan so I only use WIFI and always turn it off when I am not using it. Bluetooth as well. All my settings are set so that nothing runs on my device unless I turn it on myself. No internet though my provider as (no automatic weather updates, Email... I have to turn WIFI on and then manually update my weather myself and get my emails myself. If you have your device set up to automatically grab these things, this will drain your device quicker. Having data connection always running or bluetooth always on will drain device quicker. Listening to music though bluetooth headphones drains battery quicker then listening to music using wired headphones. I also don't keep my screen brightness at top level. I turn it up if I need to but I rarely need to do this. Other apps running in the background will also drain battery quicker (even if you don't see them running in your task manager eg. Ilock for S2U2 will require system resources *I am assuming). I have my backlight shut off rather quick and S2U2 is set up on my device to shut off screen rather quick as well. If you are running S2U2 as well and have an animated gif wallpaper, this will drain battery faster.
I don't know if this would have any effect but have you installed a lot of apps on your device? Even if you have uninstalled them, they may have left a footprint of some sort that might be causing some of your power issues. I noticed when I first got my phone and was experimenting with lots of different applications that even after uninstalling them, my phone was not responding as quickly as it orriginally did and started even having some problems running some apps that had no problems in the past and I was having memory problems as the system was still showing that it's resources were still being used. I did a hard reset after finding all of the apps that I wanted and thenafter hard reseting I re-installed everything fresh and then set up my phone the way that I wanted. After doing this, my device was running and still is running very nice, quick and smooth and have not had the battery problems you are describing.

Well my problem was even worse
After I bricked my elfin (thought it was an elf lol) I sent it back to htc. Eventhough I didnt put any facture with it (it's 2nd hand) they made it for free (in garanty) by exchanging mobo + vibrator (lol!). And that when I only needed the original software, so they have good service as far as I know..
But back to subject: I think it's your battery indeed. I guess there are more people having elf/elfin battery issues. Mine was:
After barely 2 weeks my battery got sucked empty in like 1 hour or even faster. Tried usb, normal charging, etc but nothing worked. It said it was charging but even turned off. So I bought a new battery but still the same problem, so it has to be the charging unit of the phone or something. Now I asked for another repair and hope they'll pick it up tomorrow. I'll let you guys know if I get it back!
Anyone has had some sort of the same issue?
Hey forum ! , I was an iphone 3gs user and made the jump to android when the play came out.
Ive noticed my battery is draining 2-3% an hour and looking at the "battery use in setting and then looking at the graph it show the phone is randomly awake even when the screen is off.
My play is rooted using gingerbreak 1.1 and has mostly all the bloatware removed.
non of the apps i have installed ask for permissions to prevent standby, I only have tune in radio, mobo player, facebook, twitter adobe pdf viewer, fpse, snesoid, gameboid google maps youtube imdb touch calendar es file explorer unit convertor and ringdroid installed.
i have 12 processes running using 86mb of ram
all apps are closed properly, wifi is off, background data is enabled ( but no applications i use in the settings allow auto refreshing of data)
The battery life of my xperia play has never been great (lasts about 24hrs with just checking facebook, twitter and xda forums using the built in browser)
I just wonder what is causing the phone to keep waking up randomly, is this the culprit of the battery drain?
I have a couple of theorys .... i did install desktop visualiser to change the icons then once they were changed i deleted the app (i read this app causes battery drain) maybe this could be a cause i thought deleting the app would fix,
2nd i travel around as part of my job so i wonder if the phone is going through areas where there is poor connectivity and its constantly trying to connect to different networks causing the drain.... but does anyone know of any efficient lightweight apps that disable this when the screen is off.
lastly I think the could it be widgets i only use the built in ones with the phone, the wifi on/off gps on/off and data on/off
do you guys turn data off during the day to save battery and do you turn background data off ? i think its anoying have to change all these settings off to sqeeze a tiny bit more of juice out the phone, it probably uses more turning them on and off avery 1hr or so
any suggestions or setups of how other people have got there phone up and running with good battery life would be a real help
cheers !
Deleting all widgets certainly saved my some battery, also deleting the SE launcher with launcher pro seemed to save me a lot of battery but I'm not sure about this.
2 to 3% an hour isn't bad with radios on at all. When you say awake, do you mean the screen is on, or that it's just in standby? There is nothing in battery stats that say "awake" you need to be more specific on what the system says, not what you think it's doing.
If the screen is coming on "randomly" then it could be an incoming txt, email, phonecall or something like that. Lower your screen timeout in the settings to help there.
If its phone idle or standby, then again 2 to 3% is nothing. That's 30 50 hours of standby receiving emails, txts and what not. Nothing to complain there.

Click on settings then about phone then battery use then at the top of that screen there should be a set of numbers saying how long the battery has been used since the last charge, click that an it displays a graph , on the graph page it shows when the phone is "awake" by awake I mean the screen is off the phone should be in standby mode but its being acessed by something i.e a program , like its woken up to perform some action. Anyway im wondering if anyone elses phone is awake randomly when the screen in off and in standby mode. When I factory reset I neget had this issue but its after installing apps I think or some setting im missing any ideas
I have the same problem. My Xperia Arc is "awake" all the time. Screen is locked, turned off but in battery usage I see that the phone is awake even with screen off. The culprit seems to be the native messaging app as it consumes the most battery. I'm not sure what is going on, what is the messaging app doing or which process is using it.
Any ideas anyone?
Hello guys
I have no idea if this is GingerBlur related (I'm pretty sure it isn't) but after listening to music on any player (Stock, Winamp, Player Pro), the media server process seems to continue working in the background and decreases battery level as hell. I noticed that these days. After exiting the player, the media server process kept consuming battery as indicated on the battery status. Don't know if it's kernel related but I have to reboot in order to stop the process from consuming more battery. After reboot, battery consumption came back to normal.
Have you experienced the same issue? I read a thread about someone losing his charge in just a few hours because of the same process.
I think this is Froyo bug. Other than that, my Atrix rocks and battery lasts like no other phone I've had.

The process always runs in the background regardless of you having used the program or not. My guess is that the program is holding the song on pause and not actually shutting down properly.
Instead of rebooting, you can always force stop the program in Applications. This should result in the same as a reboot.
I can not say if it is a gingerblur issue or a stock issue as I stream all my music through audiogalaxy (you simply can not fit 130 gigs of MP3s on the atrix).
It seems to happen randomly. I close the application but the media server thing keeps consuming battery. If I try to FC the service, it reopens by itself.
I'm going to try to figure out how it can actually close properly
Usually my battery life is great, but 2 days ago the N7 was dead in the morning, whereas it was fully charged in the evening. I usually get 2-3% battery loss overnight, so this was very unusual. I let it charge while off for a while, then turned it on because I needed to use it. Then let it charge for 6h while assuming it was sleeping. Well in 6h it went from 6% to only 21% charge. I looked at battery usage, and mediaserver is listed as using 87% of the battery. That is probably the reason why it's charging so slowly - and actually if I use it while plugged in the battery charge goes down.
I googled a bit for mediaserver battery usage and found a few pointers, but none of these seem to apply or work for me. I deleted all media files from the N7 (not that I had more than a few pictures to begin with), emptied all browser cache, I formatted the cache partition from recovery, made sure that all account syncing is turned off. I don't use any of the prime culprits for keeping mediaserver busy (dropbox, social networking apps, youtube, skype etc.). I killed as many background processes as I could etc.
Still mediaserver continues to show up as using over 80% of the battery, and charging is slow as molasses. I'm out of ideas.
Try fix permission under recovery. If that doesnt fix, your sd card may be going bad. Replace with new sd card.

There is no SD card. The Nexus 7 does not have external storage, only internal memory. No expansion slot.
I fixed permissions in CWM and it doesn't do anything. Mediaserver still at 86% battery usage.
There is a thread in General about Media Scanner and battery usage. Might be something in there that might help you.

I do have a few games, but none of them is new. I haven't installed anything new for the past 2 months.
For charging I use the original charger and cable. The only way I could get the battery to 100% was to turn the N7 off and charge it in the off state. When I turn it back on, the battery drain is about 1% per minute. The battery gets to zero in less than 2h. Mediaserver still hovers around 85-85% usage.
I tried using startup manager to block a few system services such as media storage, gallery etc. from loading automatically - but startup manager doesn't function properly and those services get started anyway.

I was having this untill I did the following, go into settings - google - click on your account - this will show all your synced apps, I killed all of them except for Chrome and g mail. Secondly I went into settings - apps - all - click on every app there and clear the cache. This total cured it, I am on 95% after about 10hrs of just web searching and idle, I have never had this from day one!

If this doesn't work the surefire fix is to format /system and /data and reinstall your rom then all your apps from the Play Store. Don't just use a backup because that will just cause whatever it is to be causing the same problem again

after fully charging my nexus 7 for the night i went to sleep, when i woke up in the morning the battery was down to 49%, wondering why the battery was going down so quickly, i moved to battery usage and guess BAM Media server top of the list with a whopping 46%. Wonder what caused this i searched around a google and concluded it is related to music, videos, pictures etc. However, since i recently bought the tablet i haven't gotten the chance to input any music vids or pics into. The next logical culprit for the high % is the apps, but since i downloaded a bunch of apps before hand i just opted for factory reset. now here comes the problem, even with Currents, googlenow disabled and no apps downloaded, media server is still at 35%! Does any1 know of any other things that might be causing such a high media server battery usage? Thank You very much.

For me its not more than 10% always, & as per my knowledge mediaserver is all about CPU & keep awake , so maybe some crappy apps causing the issues, so try to test by unistalling them, For me "screen " is always drains almost more than 60% , Got lucky to prove Asus that its battery fault so getting replacement of battery .
I have seen posts that point to the cause being a corrupt media file. Some have mentioned fixing by deleting corrupt video files and my wife had a bad music file that was causing all kinds of problems until I found and deleted it. Also, you can copy a 0-byte '.nomedia' file into any folder you don't want indexed by media server.
