Usually my battery life is great, but 2 days ago the N7 was dead in the morning, whereas it was fully charged in the evening. I usually get 2-3% battery loss overnight, so this was very unusual. I let it charge while off for a while, then turned it on because I needed to use it. Then let it charge for 6h while assuming it was sleeping. Well in 6h it went from 6% to only 21% charge. I looked at battery usage, and mediaserver is listed as using 87% of the battery. That is probably the reason why it's charging so slowly - and actually if I use it while plugged in the battery charge goes down.
I googled a bit for mediaserver battery usage and found a few pointers, but none of these seem to apply or work for me. I deleted all media files from the N7 (not that I had more than a few pictures to begin with), emptied all browser cache, I formatted the cache partition from recovery, made sure that all account syncing is turned off. I don't use any of the prime culprits for keeping mediaserver busy (dropbox, social networking apps, youtube, skype etc.). I killed as many background processes as I could etc.
Still mediaserver continues to show up as using over 80% of the battery, and charging is slow as molasses. I'm out of ideas.
Try fix permission under recovery. If that doesnt fix, your sd card may be going bad. Replace with new sd card.

There is no SD card. The Nexus 7 does not have external storage, only internal memory. No expansion slot.
I fixed permissions in CWM and it doesn't do anything. Mediaserver still at 86% battery usage.
There is a thread in General about Media Scanner and battery usage. Might be something in there that might help you.

I do have a few games, but none of them is new. I haven't installed anything new for the past 2 months.
For charging I use the original charger and cable. The only way I could get the battery to 100% was to turn the N7 off and charge it in the off state. When I turn it back on, the battery drain is about 1% per minute. The battery gets to zero in less than 2h. Mediaserver still hovers around 85-85% usage.
I tried using startup manager to block a few system services such as media storage, gallery etc. from loading automatically - but startup manager doesn't function properly and those services get started anyway.

I was having this untill I did the following, go into settings - google - click on your account - this will show all your synced apps, I killed all of them except for Chrome and g mail. Secondly I went into settings - apps - all - click on every app there and clear the cache. This total cured it, I am on 95% after about 10hrs of just web searching and idle, I have never had this from day one!

If this doesn't work the surefire fix is to format /system and /data and reinstall your rom then all your apps from the Play Store. Don't just use a backup because that will just cause whatever it is to be causing the same problem again

It's obvious that the person doesn't want to turn off the phone to save battery; they want to conserve it while the phone is on.
@figofigo - you can download 'System Panel Lite' from the market. Run the app, and then look to the left of the listed apps. There is a CPU usage indicator. Uninstall apps that you don't need and ones that have a high CPU usage level. This should work.

I think it was a reaction to the obvious laziness of the OP. If you'd look around the forum you would see a number of posts dealing with this issue, when I came across the post there was one with a similar topic just two topics down.

There are a few things you can do, but there are few things that will improve battery-life as much as going over the services and seeing what's running. For example having the gps activated and running location-based services will drain your battery faster than anything really.
But if you're hell-bent on purging apps one safe bet is the Moxier apps. If you don't use exchange it might be worth removing them.
But again, removing apps isn't the final solution. If you haven't then I would suggest trying the latest root with the r2b update, switching to the r2b update increased my battery-life about 5-8 times. Even with a standard image, using wireless, using bluetooth as well as making calls and listening to music I can easily get over two days of usage from it without recharging.
Common Guys seriously who needs a Battery Life 24 hours ++ ? I am happy if my Battery keeps for about 12-16 Hours without charging because that's almost my working Time, afterward i can charge my Phone. I'm a heavy Phone user during working Days with about 200-300 sms , 10 - 20 Phone Calls + Bluetooth in car, a bit Internet (maybe 2 Hours per day) and some this and that, So my working Day starts at 9am with 100% Battery and I'm home about 10pm with mostly 30% Battery left. So what i connect it to the charger then. Who needs a Battery with 60 Hours and more without charging ? You People not going home after work ? Terrible would be 5 Hours from 100% to 0% but that most likely won't happen anyway. Maybe email sucks a bit more on the Battery but i don't know because i still use my Blackberry for that.

LOL hahaha
Trying to figure out what was causing excessive battery drain on my phone, I downloaded SystemPanel and had it log overnight. I read that when the phone is unused, none of the apps in the "Top Apps" should show over 0.2%. I left my phone on the charger all night and the "system" app sucked up 1.2% completely unused. Apparently there should also be some kind of standby app showing up, and that is nowhere to be seen. I'm running Nero v5. Anyone know what could be going on?

In my experience, System Panel is not the culprit when this happens. I've had success with getting 0% battery drain on airplane mode overnight, and always w/SP running. (It's inconsistent, though -- I actually tried it just last night, and Market ended up jacking the CPU all night, even though I had killed Market hours before bed. Don't know why this happens.) I actually leave SP Monitoring on all the time, and generally get (what I consider to be ) great standby battery life.
To the OP: what were the top apps that were running (at more than 0.0%); and were they burning CPU the whole time? If an app/process is running the whole night, it seems to also "trigger" System to burn CPU -- but the app itself is the "real" culprit. (Pls keep in mind I know none of the technical details; but I've experimented a lot w/this.)
EDIT: sorry, just read yr post more closely. To address two more points:
(a) re: the "Standby" process -- this rarely pops up for me, even on the occasions where I do get a totally placid phone overnight w/no batt. drain.
(b) re: I left my phone on the charger all night -- try it without doing this (stay off charger & use airplane mode), and see what happens. I haven't had good luck w/leaving phone on charger: I wake up to same thing -- System jacked up -- and end up needing to power-cycle phone to get System to settle down.
(By the way, I'm totally stock JI6, and so can't address Nero etc.)
The standby process ("suspend") should always be near the top of the list if your phone is truly in standby in a given 8 hour period.
notverycreative - system always uses between 1.9-2.5% for me. It's the system processes and regular apps that you should pay attention to. Once I used Titanium to freeze Media Hub, the DRM Protection Processes, WiFi Calling and some poorly coded apps, my battery life improved significantly.
Here's some screen shots from mine over night.
Alright, I'll try doing all that tonight. I just flashed Bionix V so I lost my data from last night, but I'll try to recreate it tonight. I did get rid of the DRM processes and Media Hub, as well as SNS sync. I never installed WiFi sync for that exact reason.

Just spent the night on flight mode and nothing took more than .1% battery and the battery didn't drain much at all, as the meter read 90% before and after I slept, which was about 6 or so hours. It may have something to do with flashing Bionix, but regardless I am happy thanks everyone!

Hiya,
Ever since I got my phone replacement (Brand New in Box from Bell) I noticed that the battery drains 10% per hour regardless of my current clock speeds.
I'm only listening my music.
My mobile data is on.
Wifi is off.
I have ES Task Manager set to autokill when screen off
Details:
ROM- CyanogenMod Nightly #140
CPU Clock speeds- 245~368 Mhz
CPU Governer- ON DEMAND

Just making sure I'm reading you right, you have es task manager killing apps? Android 2.2 doesn't have any need for that, and it may hurt your battery life.
First thing to check is to make sure any apps that sync (weather) aren't syncing every 15min, and change them to every few hours. If that still doesn't work, try a different battery. May just have a bad one.

Go into spare parts > battery history > partial wake usage
This will show apps that are running in the background that are using the battery. If there are any 'rogue' apps that aren't behaving properly, this should show it. You can also use Watchdog Lite from the Market (free) to monitor CPU usage of applications to try and find what is running down your battery.
Although, if you are listening to music, 10% drain per hour doesn't sound too much out of the ordinary.
Update: I stopped my music for roughly 45 minutes and it seems that music doesn't affect it much. It still drains.

Yea good call. And get rid of that task killer! No need for that, especially in CM7.
Having similar problems suddenly. I was getting nearly 24 hours of battery life with normal usage, but in the last 4-5 days the phone drains to death while in standby. Searched here and online and couldn't find anything other than the normal check apps, etc. But I haven't changed anything in months, and usage isn't showing anything out of the ordinary.
Is it possible my battery is hosed? Android OS says battery health is still "good", and outside of screen-off it seems to drain normally. I even left it on for about 30 minutes and lost 1%. But overnight it went from 100% to 1% in just short of 7 hours with absolutely no use. So bizarre...

Didn't help me.
Only turning on airplane mode helped me.
I think it's a TMO infrastructure/network problem of some sort, honestly. Maybe a bug with the deployment of 2.3?
Yeah didn't help me either.
I had my phone fully charged when i made the post earlier and it is now dead.
Hopefully they shed some light on this soon.
OK good I'm not crazy
One thing I noticed last night after draining and wiping battery stats again is when I woke up it said Dialer took up 49% of the battery usage? I charged to full with the phone off, turned it on and it sat on the nightstand until this morning. Received 2 texts during that time, no phone calls made or received, and my alarm is set at 6am on it and went off. Battery went from 100% to 19% in this state.
This is frustrating. I read the T-Mo thread and it's seeming more like network issues? Anyone else have this problem here on XDA?
EDIT: Customer Support is useless. Insistent that forum posts "mean nothing" and I need to pay them $20 to replace the phone. Also they have no logged issues on this, even though I've seen multiple posts of people who've called in. Sigh.
Also been experiencing the exact same problem with CM13X and CM151. I had uninstalled maps, which didn't improve anything, so I reinstalled it and it appears to be okay now
So far 1h16m since full charge after uninstalling Maps completely and rebooting and clearing cache, and battery is still 100% while sitting on my desk here at work. Also Dialer isn't showing 50% usage either. Hmmm.
Hey guys. Recently my battery has been dying at an alarming rate. According to BBS it's from a process called diagnostics.client.Wakelock, does anyone have an idea what could be causing this?
I started noticing the drain after setting up my Galaxy Gear, don't know if that may have something to do with it.

I am facing a huge battery drain as well after the recent update was pushed. I don't have the "diagnostics.client.Wakelock" in BBS but Samsung Push Service was hogging a lot so I turned that off. It was 80% at 11PM and today morning it was down to 59% .. that's 21% in standby mode. Is it not going into sleep mode or is something else causing this? I have almost everything turned off. Any ideas guys? Thank you.

Yes MJ7. I hope this is a bug that can get fixed sooner than later. It's horrible. I just got 1h 37mins of screen time and now I am down to 12%. Just a few calls and some Instagram. Nothing else. Would removing the battery for a while or something help? I haven't installed any app since updating to MJ7 (2 days ago).
I've had this issue with MI7 and MJ7 so the update is not the problem. My guess is me freezing most of the samsung bloat on the phone through Titanium is causing this. Maybe there's a process trying to find something thay I froze?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
I fixed it by charging my battery up to 90% then removed the battery and kept it aside for a while ~10 mins and then plugged it back in and charged it to 100%. Now it seems to be normal again. No drain last night. Moved only 1% from 12AM to 9PM. Cheers!
I have the same issue with MJ7 firmware; the phone sometimes doesn't get into deep sleep while the screen is off.
A possible cause of the issue: switch off wifi when data are off.
So now I switch data on before turning wifi off.
Anyone ever find a solution to this? It's killing me.
Same here, my battery declines almos 1% every 5 minutes just texting via Whatsapp and I know Whatsapp is not the guilty. Using Wakelock monitor shows 30% Android System usage with a lot of entries in Gpslocationprovider (even with GPS off and everything on Location settings off), SyncloopWakelock and AlarmManager... MJ7 here too... My Note2 wasn't like this... I finished the day with 5% of baterry after heavy use from 8am til 10pm (including 45' watching videos)... With my Note3 at mid-day I have my battery death!! I can't believe it! and I don't know what is happening (I only have 4 days with my new Note 3) and I have tried almost everything (deactivating) except wipe data/factory reset (I've tried soft reset and nothing)
Anyone ever find a solution to this wakelock?

I noted that my GN3 would have great and then poor battery drainage. It seemed to happen right after my first long call of the day. I noted in my wakelock app that diagnostics.client.wakelock was using a lot of time.
I decided to take more drastic action by doing a factory reset and restoring apps one by one. I first used Kingo Root to root my GN3. I had to uninstall Kies and the Samsung driver to get the rooting to work.
Then I backed up with Helium and Titanium backup.
After a factory reset, my battery usage was about 0.2 percent per hour. I use only data and no wifi.
I have now restored most of my apps and still have 0.3 percent per hour usage. I have not updated any Samsung or ATT apps.except for ATT code scanner. i have not "used" any of the google apps except for gmail, search, google+ (signed out). Google music is turned off.
Diagnostics.client.wakelock still shows up but with low time now.
After twelve hours, the GN3 is at 96 percent including a two minute phone call and email updates.
------
After a long phone call, I once again saw my battery usage increase and stay up after the phone call.
-----
I re-started with a factory reset and only restored the minimum apps that I use to browse, email, text, phone, and backup.
So far it is performing well in battery usage.
I will be adding more apps until I find the one that breaks the good performance.
-----
So far I have been able to make it through 24 hours using only TEN percent battery usage. I have added TextPlus, BofA, drippler, Helium, Titanium Backup Pro, CPU Spy Plus, Wakelock Detector, System Tuner Pro, Battery Monitor Pro, AutoBluetooth, Maps, Youtube, YP, Total Commander, Visual Voicemail, Quick Boot, Root Checker, Turn Off Screen. Everything else is stock without updating AT&T apps or Samsung apps.
I am seeing an idle usage of less than 0.3% and that is with two widgets for Battery Monitor and System Tuner. They and Textplus use up the most power. I also talked on the phone via bluetooth for about 30 minutes.
I still get the diagnostic.client.wakelog but only getting about 5 percent awake time.
-----
I did another factory reset. This time I did not allow any app updates.
I installed Titanium Backup, CPU Spy Plus, Wakelock Detector, Battery Monitor Widget Pro.
I have not seen a diagnostic.client.wakelock at all after one hour of use.
-----
I added TextPlus, System Tuner Pro. I put the widgets to System Tuner pro and Battery Monitor on the home screen.
I have not updated any apps since the reset.
I have counted about 7 diagnostic.client.wakelocks for a total of 4 seconds of wake time. My wake time percentage since yeaterday is around 1 percent.
I plan to update apps one at a time to see which one kills the battery usage with wake locks.
I just added AT&T Visual Voicemail, PayPal, BofA, and Evernote to my GN3.
The diagnostics.client.wakelock started climbing and keeping my phone from sleeping.
Uninstalling the four apps did not help.
I think that the problem is with the Visual Voicemail.
----
Factory reset my phone and am back to 1 percent wake state and very low battery drain.
----
The cause of the bad wakelock was due to restoring APP+DATA in Titanium Backup. I did that to save setup steps.
I had restored BofA and Shazam with data and the wakelocks started up.
After I factory reset again, I installed apps the normal way and have been seeing a 0.3 percent use per hour.
Samsung's own software is most garbage in my opinion.
If you use ChatOn and Samsung Hub, etc, disabling this may have an impact.
Here's how I've solved the problem with this pig of an app.
1) go to application manager under settings.
2) go to the "ALL" tab
3) find that "samsung push service"
4) uninstall - this will only uninstall the updates. Once all the very useful updates are gone, the option changes to disable.
5) disable and good riddance.
On a side note, search for this on the playstore. the reviews are hilarious.
c.
Nothing I had tried up to today has fixed my battery drain and diagnostics.client.wakelock issue.
However, today, I got a software update OTA (nb4) on my phone and it appears the problem is fixed.
So my gf's Nexus 4 is having some issues with the phone - on idle it drains in 8 hours, and it seems to charge very very slowly.
I tried connecting to the computer to copy off settings and photos but Windows is telling me in device manager, "Device Descriptor Request Failed". It's actually draining faster than it's charging when on USB (but is fine on AC, still very slow though).
Was using ART.
Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Already done all that - underclocked and undervolt, still no improvement. BBS installed as system app with root, showing no wakelocks (highest one is 8 minutes).
1. drain: can be a kernel related or os problem, so flash a new kernel, or reflash your current one, or flash another customer rom or stock
2. slow charging: you should try another USB cable, on my old HTC cable my phone is charging about 33% slower!
.. or it is charging slow because of the drain.. hmm, think last one
3. what do your battery stats tell you?
keep calm and push the thanks button!
I restored my phone back to factory Kitkat last night, and overnight there was 3h of constant battery drain under Google Play services.
Might downgrade to 4.3 and see if it's still there.
Might be the battery is having some problem. Contact google if you still have warranty then ask for replacement.

It was bought on launch day - out of warranty now
I don't think it's a physical thing though.
Check system internal battery status, to see who uses battery. And also check if wifi, gps, etc are always on.
If RF, Android OS, etc uses most, and battery drain fast, try another ROM and Kernel also baseband firmware. If app uses a lot, uninstall it and have a try. Disable wifi, gps, etc.
If you can, try charge your phone from shutdown, where no app runs. It should be fast, otherwise, some hardware should be replaced.
Did a factory restore from the Nexus image, just left it idle with Wifi on and no other apps other than the default Google ones, and it still drained itself after 8 hours.
