after fully charging my nexus 7 for the night i went to sleep, when i woke up in the morning the battery was down to 49%, wondering why the battery was going down so quickly, i moved to battery usage and guess BAM Media server top of the list with a whopping 46%. Wonder what caused this i searched around a google and concluded it is related to music, videos, pictures etc. However, since i recently bought the tablet i haven't gotten the chance to input any music vids or pics into. The next logical culprit for the high % is the apps, but since i downloaded a bunch of apps before hand i just opted for factory reset. now here comes the problem, even with Currents, googlenow disabled and no apps downloaded, media server is still at 35%! Does any1 know of any other things that might be causing such a high media server battery usage? Thank You very much.

For me its not more than 10% always, & as per my knowledge mediaserver is all about CPU & keep awake , so maybe some crappy apps causing the issues, so try to test by unistalling them, For me "screen " is always drains almost more than 60% , Got lucky to prove Asus that its battery fault so getting replacement of battery .
I have seen posts that point to the cause being a corrupt media file. Some have mentioned fixing by deleting corrupt video files and my wife had a bad music file that was causing all kinds of problems until I found and deleted it. Also, you can copy a 0-byte '.nomedia' file into any folder you don't want indexed by media server.

You mean the service that scans for new media on the device? That has nothing to do with sync
This is how the menu normally looks like. [THIS IS NOT MY DEVICE]
Come on guys, this is killing my battery.
what are you talking about? just untick whatever you dont want to sync? media server is seperate from your google stuff.

It's the Google Play Music Sync.

If you read further down this only is a fix if there is a media server issue if not using a media player...
It seems to be the consensus in the xda community that it media server issue is related to corrupted media files, be it images or music. However I don't think this is the case.
I have the issue only when playing my sd card music from a music player like power amp. It doesn't happen when not using it. I turned off all scanning within the app and it is still happening. I think this is a 4.2 issue... I deleted all of the files on my SD card then resynced and it's still happening! This was not an issue with the same EXACT content on the galaxy nexus. Can anyone help fix battery drain issue!?

Could be a poweramp issue if its not optimized for 4.2 so stop using poweramp and try something else. And is it really a battery drain? I have poweramp installed, mediaserver uses about 16% but its had no effect on my battery life. I also didn't have this issue when poweramp wasn't installed and I used google music, mediaserver then was a minimal % but I had the same battery life. I just switched to mixzing and will see if mediaserver is still as active. I'm thinking it's poweramps widget causing the issue.

I'm not sure what you mean by "is it really draining your battery". It has a higher consumption than screen on battery stats... I've never known battery stats to be incorrect as far as actually draining battery. I don't think you notice it because you might not listen to music as much as I do. I usually listening to it all day on and off at work. Battery is noticeably less when media server issue is rampant.
Also still showing up with Google music as the music player on SD card music.

I listen to music for 2 hours a day while working out, mediaserver never even showed up in my battery stats when I used google music. When I started using poweramp it now it shows over 20%. So in my mind poweramp is the problem and I uninstalled it and am now using mixzing and the percentage of battery mediaserver uses has dropped significantly. It dropped 10% in 4 hours. If I wiped the battery stats I'm sure it would be non-existent again.
And by is it really draining your battery I mean is it really a problem with mediaserver, the service behind all media players, or is it you just play music for such a long time that it would naturally be a big drain on the battery. Just like if you made calls all day you couldn't expect your battery to last over 8 hours.
I was having your problem with all of the ticks gone.
Go into Settings->Data Usage->Menu and tick "Auto-sync data". That will bring back the ticks so you can uncheck whatever you don't want to sync anymore.
Mediaserver seems to be a fairly common complaint for just about every phone. This thread on rootzwiki for the GNex had about the best recommendations as to whats causing it and how to fix it, though I've pretty much seen the same answers in other threads here, this is about the 4th thread someone's started on this topic for the Nexus 4. I turned on show cpu usage in the developer options for a couple minutes and I saw mediaserver popup a number of times, I'm thinking its because I have sounds enabled for just about every thing in the sounds setting section. Anything that has to do with media of any type (videos, pictures, sounds, games, music) will call it up.

Bear with me. If you are an expert on android maybe you can help me out here. First off, I have researched the crap out of this problem and still been unable to fix it, so YES, I did search before making this thread.
I am on a stock, rooted Verizon Galaxy S4. I have been watching my battery consumption carefully via the integrated battery settings menu, battery stats plus and wakelock detector apps. Mainly, there is a program or set of programs that typically is called "Google Services" that according to the integrated battery menu is consuming anywhere between 20-45% of my battery, sometimes more than the screen on time! My battery life is around 48hrs with 10hrs screen time but that is on the massive zerolemon 7500mah battery which I just bought, so I am not sure if that is above, below or just average (i.e. I have no real standard by which to judge).
Like I said I have read probably every thread about this problem with remedies such as; disable location, turn off google now, turn off google maps reporting, uninstall updates for google play/google play services/google framework settings, turn off google sync etc. I have tried them ALL, none seem to work. I have a feeling the issue is perhaps more in depth and above my head.
It gets more complicated. Although the stock android integrated battery menu reports it as using a massive amount of battery, the other two apps I mentioned above do not even report it, or at least not under a name that I regonize (perhaps that categorize it under a different process?). Under them screen time is by far the highest consumer.
So what to make of this? Is it a false report that the stock integrated android battery menu is reporting, and thus something to disregard? I doubt that because there are many other threads out there of people with the same problem and questions I have. But It's also not like my battery drains within hours. For instance, today I have been off the charge for 12.5hrs, with 3hrs and 40min of screen time and have 63% remaining on the 7500mah zerolemon extended battery.
If you can help, please do. If this is indeed a major drain I would really like to fix it.

Yes that seems to work, but it's not really a "fix" as now I cannot use the location feature of many of my apps. Basically traded one problem for another, albeit lesser one.
I'm still trying to figure it out as since last update (MEA firmware) , my phone is heating a lot.
I had this problem with data connection on, I had this problem in airplane mode, but not strangely with having connection to wifi.
I also observed that google services and android system is consuming most of the battery. earlier when I used to get 8-10% consumption in full use in an hour, now, 8-10 % is consumed within 30 mins.
No tweaks are working. Frozen a bunch of apps but the problem is still there.
Just now I've uninstalled fileexpert HD , as "greenify" told me that since last 20 minutes my phone is on, it has taken 250+ wake locks.
I'm charging my battery to full to check if that solves my problem.
will try to disable location services and report back on the results.
Bump
Have the exact same problem, before the latest firmware my phone had awesome battery life, and now the battery goes from 40% to zero in just a few hours without any app running when I'm sleeping... it's horrible. Same problem with my wife's S4 since the latest update... It absolutely sucks.
I noticed the battery life on my I9505 has been getting worse recently, even though i've been using it very infrequently, sometimes it's just sat untouched for 4+ hours while i'm working. I looked at the battery stats and while the "screen" is usually at the top, "media server" is usually second, taking anywhere from 10-20% of my battery, when i look into this, it lists "stay awake" as the amount of time the phone has been off charge, plugging the phone in will stop the time counting up but the moment i unplug the phone, the timer continues to count up. Battery stats plus also shows the media server to be keeping the phone awake.
I've removed all my music and also pics + video from the phone as suggested elsewhere with media server problems and corrupt files, but this has had no effect.

Same here
I have just tried something that may have worked...
I have always tried to stop any Samsung store apps from updating or running, but i read that there was a media scanning issue with samsungs music hub or something, i just let all the samsung apps update through the samsung hub and then rebooted the phone, the media server isn't running any more.
I'm going to use the phone like usual for another day to see if this has actually worked.
I had the same problem today. My phone lasted only 5 hours and media server was on top of the list after listening to music. I think it has to do with Samsung's music app because that's the only time I notice significant battery loss.

Do you have an external SD inserted? Such cards can also keep media server (/scanner) running if there is a corrupt file on it. If so, either format the card and/or root the phone and use RescanMediaRoot to disable the media scanner service altogether.

No i don't have an external SD. I haven't had the problem today for the first time in about 3 weeks, so i think letting the samsung store update all the apps has fixed it.
Meda scanner stay awake time is 23 miinutes today after 8 hours use, before that, it would have said 8 hours.
Use Greenify and hibernate your music app and see if media server is still appearing in BetterBatteryStats
Hey guys and please dont crucify me. I know there's a ton of other battery issue threads on this forum and on many others but I cant find the right one. I have looked up each and every one of them, about mediaserver draining the battery about the android system and so on. I have done everything each thread said to, downloaded greenify and hibernated most active apps, disabled and froze certain bloatware with titanium backup pro and so many other things. And I think that the battery would be supposed to perform at its best right now. I am not a very heavy user, I just use my phone for music, calls, a little gaming and the occasional facebook/messenger/browser session with either 4G or WiFi. I have everything everyone ever said turned off. Things like auto backup of Google+ and all location services and auto sync. Screen is constantly at 65% brightness. To further prove my point, at this point in this post which took me like 3 minutes to write, my battery has lost 3 percent. I can leave the phone unplugged all night at 100% and when I wake up it will be at 95% but the moment I pick it up and start playing some music or some games the battery goes down really fast. I can even compare it to the battery of my old Xperia S after a year and a half use which was like 7 hours altogether. Battery stats say that mediaserver takes up 20ish% battery and Android system goes over 40%. I really don't know what to do. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance, George.
you should look at the time it depletes when screen on, if its below 5 hours from 100% downward then its not good. I have noticed the battery still charges past 100%. So leave it an hour after it reaches 100%. I would also recommend using the charger that came with phone. No usb charging for these tests. Dont use phone while charging either.
Also freezing\debloating can be adverse, at least thats my experience on battery life. So I recommend going back to stock full clean with factory resets.
No recovering of apps or app data for these tests. No contamination so to speak.
Also lg roms allow you to switch off services via taskmanager settings, in settings app you can disable what you dont want to use. No need for debloating\freezing etc.
Switch off location settings, gps and bluetooth for this test. Search for carrier iq on lg g2 forum and how to disable it via settings. Switch of cloud storage(dropbox/box etc) and lg backup stuff. Only google accounts, wifi and mobile networks.
Now for the screen on time test, just use browsing apps. No games or music\movies.
Your screen on time should be 6 hours approximately. From 100 to 0. It can be 5-6 hours. If its below 5 then its not good. this is with good network coverage btw.
thats what I would do

Yes I have tried all of the above. Only thing that sticks out is something called 1013 which keeps running and waking my phone but I think it's something about the sound. Next is Android System with many wakelocks and as I said with 30+ % battery consumption. Everything location-wise is off. Actually everything is off. Every setting. Things go to hell when I open 4G or WiFi. Also I have the international model so I don't think there's carrier IQ in my device, or maybe I didn't find it in an app suggested by someone here for that purpose. System Tweaks I think it was.
Could you post a screen shot?

I've had android 4x do this on multiple devices, multiple roms for no apparent reason. Wipe it and start over. Wipe everything. Especially directories with any form of music, sound files, videos... ( Use LG Flash Tool and go back to stock 4.2 for example will do just that )
So the OTA came over to my country and now it seems like BBS and WLD are broken. Can't really do anything to show you the more complex battery stats and can't really say that the battery has improved. Reducing the brightness did have some effect but I am not really fond of having it at such low values. Anything else I can do to minimize the Android System battery consumption? Its bigger than what the screen is using, even when it was at 70% brightness.
Sad to say my first LG G2 just got replaced today & am now running into this problem with the 2nd phone. Its literally night and day battery life performance between both phones.
First phone had 0 issues and by now I'd still have battery % in the 90s. New phone is sitting @ 63% after 3 hours of use (setting up phone, few reboots here there....just factory resetted for the 2nd time to try and clear this etc)
Culprits are:
Google Services
Android Core Apps
Media Server
System UI
Both phones are: 4.2.2
build: JDQ39B
Software: D80110c
brightness (which never was an issue)= 45%
O.P,
has your situation improved or worsened since you've encountered this problem? I'm thinking about sending my replacement back for another replacement

I can now say that the battery life of my phone has improved. But sadlyf the problem was probably some corrupt mp3 files that I moved directly from my old device which forced the mediaserver service to run constantly and thus the android system. :/ I still can say that I think it drains a bit fast when I use it for browsing, Facebook, games and stuff but at least when I check the battery consumption, the only things stated there that make a difference are the screen at ~30-35% and the game which I was playing or for example Chrome. It finally feels like that whatever I use drains the battery and not something else in the background but I don't have that good of an impression for the 3000mAh "beast" battery of the G2. Awesome phone though.

I ended up returning my replacement phone and am back on my original G2 until I can get a proper replacement. I can tell you, the G2 does have an awesome battery life if you get a good phone out the box.
The differences between my first G2 and the 2nd one tmobile sent me are night and day. Get a replacement phone while you still have time.
Should have my new one next week. Just hope it's exactly like my first one.

You're on 4.2.2, not 4.4.2 when you have the 1013, is that correct?
Try rebooting when the volume is on, rather than rebooting in quiet/vibrate mode.

The OTA came to my country some days ago. Still the battery feels kind of small. Is it normal to lose 1% every ~1-2 minutes on 4G browsing? With nothing else on. No gps no G+ backup no anything.
My husband got a Tab A 10.1 last year for Christmas and uses it mainly for streaming music on YouTube and surfing marketplace on Facebook. While I know both apps are battery hogs, the battery drain is still unreal. Just having the tablet on the "home" screen for 5 mins will drain the battery 14%.
I have either removed or disabled all the apps not needed, have optimization setting set (says battery life is over a day haha), brightness is low and on auto, and also have an auto app kill installed to stop apps in background. Have gone through and removed background permission and set allowed open background to only 2.
Short of rooting, which I prefer to not do with the lack of options, is there anything else that I can do here? Is this a common issue with this tablet?

If you are having that kind of battery drain just on Home screen, without the music or facebook apps running, either the battery is bad or you have some kind of malware. Have you tried factory reseting the tablet? Or running malware detection app?

I have run the built in tablet scan for virus and malware threats but have not installed an independent app. I will try that though and see what happens. I will also look and see if this tablet is still not under warranty, but honestly just going a phone repair to have battery replaced might be cheaper and faster than sending back to Samsung. Thanks for the help.
