Why have you chosen the Galaxy or why will you be choosing the Galaxy rather than the Evo? Is the better screen tech your primary reason?
I ask this after being an Evo owner over the past month and now currently testing (playing with) the iPhone 4. I loved the Evo but my unit was defective and so I'm considering getting a new one at the end of July (hoping new batches ship out then) or one of the SGS versions; Verizon, At&t and then T-Mobile in that order is what I'm in favor of as far as which SGS.

Evo 3D power sux, SGS is better eot.
I can't use the EVO 4G because I'm in the UK and we don't have any CDMA networks. Otherwise, I would rather have the EVO 4G for its screen - the Galaxy S' has better contrast, but it has a PenTile matrix, meaning it doesn't have the full complement of the three RGB subpixels per pixel (it only has two), with consequences for sharpness.
For me, it's a decision between the Desire and the Galaxy S, both of which have AMOLED screens, so I can't avoid PenTile. The Galaxy S' screen is definitely better than the Desire's, though, and it also has a better GPU (and, it seems, CPU) and a proper multi-touch digitiser that doesn't get easily confused.

Thanks for your input guys! Since you mention the screens, how about the Evo only having 16bit 65K color?
I have yet to choose a new phone but I dumped the EVO after two weeks for three reasons. The 30fps cap, the purple tint, and most importantly the screen only displays 65k colors.
These three were together made me take the phone back.

I'm waiting to have my launch day Evo returned to Radio Shack (manager is trying to get me in past the 30 day mark with his Sprint rep). I thought the screen was beautiful and just had issues with the screen raising and a few others build issues.
I need to touch the Galaxy before I know for sure. The Droid X could have been good but the large bump on the back and that ugly 80's camera flash remind me of how ugly I thought the first Droid keyboard was. I'm sure we have a lot of slick devices coming out later this year but it's already a tough call for what to have right now.......

Yep, I don't understand how Moto can keep making such butt-ugly phones. Between the ugly Moto design and the ugly Verizon branding, the Droid X is a phone only a true nerd can love
I had a google nexus, which hardware-wise is pretty simillar to the evo.
The snapdragon processor is pretty good, but samsung's hummingbird is better (and is produced at 45nm, less power consumption)
The real tie-breaker for me was the GPU.
The Adreno200 in the snapdragon SOC is pretty weak, if i need to put it in proportions, the SGX540 in the Galaxy S is around 3 times stronger, possibly even a bit more.
Screen- while the evo's screen is sharper (on paper), 65k colors and low contrast ratio wipe that advantage completely. The difference is just too big.
Now the most important point- the evo is a real battery -hogging monster, it can barely last for a day and a half in very moderate use, while the SGS can probably last for twice the time under the same use.
I'm not too a fan of dragging around chargers and backup batteries, don't know about you.
I'd turn my eyes over to the droid X, better hardware (TI OMAP 1GHZ+SGX530>Qualcomm Snapdragon, any day), better battery time, probably a better camera as well. Motorla made a nice comeback.
I'd make the prime options the Epic 4G or Droid X.

I see your points seem valid to me. But personally I think the Epic is too thick with the keyboard (plus Swype is all the typing speed I need in my pocket). If the Epic came without the keyboard and if the screen really is that great; I'd be down to deciding between it and the iPhone because Sprint service with the Evo for me has been wonderful unlike this stupid At&t on the iPhone.
We all seem to get so focused on the specs that may not matter all that much? I mean these are phones and not desktops of say 15 years ago when we would research the heck out of a purchase because we knew we were going to keep it for at least 2, 3 or more years........
Anyhow, I really just don't see the bad in the Evo display I have and it's right here being matched up to my iPhone 4. I'm going to do something that no tech blogs ever seem to do. I'm going to load up both these phones, with the exact same high res images and then see how they look to me. Wish I could test the Galaxy along with these two phones, but I will have returned the Evo by the time I get my hands on a galaxy........

We want games to work on our newly-bought super-high-end phone. That's all.
At first there were the HTC devices with a qualcomm MSM7XXX. OK cpu, weak gpu.
Then came along the droid/milestone. ok cpu, ok+ gpu.
Then the wave of snapdragon devices- Very strong cpu, weak gpu.
We all waited for a balanced solution that will let us have a strong cpu and gpu, with android.
Untill the galaxy S, Droid X and Milestone XT720 come along, the iphone was the only balanced device.
About the displays- it's not that the evo display is bad. It's just that both the samsung and the galaxy s are way better. The first time i loaded a high-res video to my galaxy s side by side with my brother's milestone (which is regarded as a device with a very good screen by itself), my mind was blown. The difference is as clear as day.
I can say this with confidence-
Sharpness is overrated. We are talking about 3-4" screens here, not home 50" displays. As soon as 640X360 resolution over 3.5" was passed, the matter started to become pretty ridiculous. You need a 10X magnification to actually see pixels, i doubt your eyes have that.
On the other hand, be it a 1000" screen or a 1" screen, the difference in contrast/colors in general is always visible.
It might not be the "sharpest" screen around, but it is clearly the display with best colors around.
For someone who uses his phone as a media player a lot, this was VERY important to me.

That's what I forgot in my last post; are you guys saying that the SGS has much better battery life than the Evo??? From all the comments on the thread here about first thoughts, it seems that folks aren't doing any better.
On the Evo board, I see all the same types of comments and the same range as I do here. Some Evo owners say they can't make it a day and some say they can make it a day and a half and even 3 days, after make half a dozen changes to the device. I know what my Evo battery life has been like and it's not anywhere near as good as this iPhone I'm trying out or even as good as my HD2 was. So I do have a feeling that I'll try the Galaxy and come right back to this board, asking about how to get better battery life.
I just love this device the screen is awesome!!

I see where you're coming from! I love games and I tried NOVA on the iPhone 4 two days ago and I was blown away. But I'm just not into gaming on phones and without real controls even if I had the time to play games as often as I'd like to, it just doesn't appeal to me much.
My HD2 came with transformers and I loaded it onto the Evo's sd card. I am a filmmaker and all I can say is that it looked and played perfectly on the Evo. I've heard people say that they watched films on the Evo with terrible results and all I have to say is that any device needs to have the right video format type and bitrate for a specific device (the right encoding app and settings makes all the difference).

I had not thought of it until I started reading about it here. I'm talking about text not being as clear on the SGS screens. Again, I guess I won't know what these comments are about, until I get to try this phone myself. Some folks say it's a big deal and then others say it's not. Also I guess that has something to do with the "screen door" effect of the SGS display tech?
I guess what I meant about specs was that if any phone can do everything you want it to today and do it well, then that's about all that matters. rather than seeking out the best specs for some type of future proofing that just doesn't make much sense in regards to how quickly phone tech is advancing and how xda folks like us, are going to keep upgrading sooner rather than later. An Example would be people who worry about a phone not having 4G LTE radios now, even though by the time the towers are all in place, those same people, will be moving on to a new phone.

Are you having any speed issues and how is your battery life treating you? Also would you say text is as sharp as on other high-end devices?
We being non US does not have the EVO 4G to play with but I have been using a Desire for the last 2 months. The reason why I swapped to the SGS is mainly because of the multitouch screen issue with HTC. Typing with SGS is even better than the iphone which, love it or hate it, were the best in terms of virtual keyboard. However I am disappointed with the speed so far, especially with emails. Hopefully the next firmware address those issues.

After using the iPhone 4 keyboard a lot in the last few days I would have to say yes it is the best tap type touch keyboard. Something about it and I assume the screen tech, make it very good. But the hands down best touch keyboard is Swype hands down which is not on iOS yet. Also the HTC keyboard is also very nice on it's own but also having the voice button on the keyboard is really nice (not sure if the SGS has that as well).
Oh and thanks; I was forgetting about the fact that the rest of the world got the SGS first but no Evo. Sometimes we silly Americans behave as if we are the world.

It's a matter of different priorities, yes: the great majority of what I do on my phone is read or write text, so having nice crisp text is important to me. I remember being amazed by how great the text looked on my first 640x480 PDA with ClearType. Conversely, I rarely watch video or look at photos on my phone.
The decision's pretty much taken out of my hands if I want a high-end Android phone in the UK. I would love the iPhone 4's display though.
Hi friends. It's been a hot topic as you all know Samsung new flagship was announced yesterday. Frankly speaking, it was a overhyped phone and was the most anticipated one of the year. And unfortunately it disappoints me & many others.
Pentile Display in the flagship device is just the heck of a decision. A 4.8" HD Display should've had super amoled plus display rather than a pentile one. HTC ONE X has a true HD IPS SUPER LCD2 Display that feels a lot better.
The design is the major letdown for me. The shape isn't that good for a phone when I put this against One X. Yeah the phone is slim making a difference of 0.3mm but the entire shape didn't appeal to me much.
Made of polycarbonate same as One X but with hyperglaze that makes it more glossy and yes LET'S FACE IT; it looks cheap.
The battery isn't a difference to me. SIII houses a 2100 mAh battery and HTC ONE X has a penta-core chip making the phone to last long with a 1800 mAh battery.
SIII Camera app, S Voice are innovative and are as good as HTC ImageSense Chip and Beats Audio Integration in HTC One phones. (Camera may be a few steps ahead in One X)
New Touchwiz UI is like more of a gingerbread look rather than ICS. The true and real ICS UI would've been much better in SIII.
*Whatever the quadrant shows is not reliable. It may smack down One X but you've got to admire the build quality and UI and especially the shape and design of HTC ONE X.*
Important Note:
Buy the one you like. Admire the one you think is the best. At the end of the day the BEST phone is the one which is in your hand.
It's just a bit of comparison and talks we gonna do here. No offence whatsoever!
*I don't own any of these two devices. It was a gentle comparison and everyone has the right to have an opinion.*

Htc one X has a poor design. Check Engadget were they are put side by side. One X looks plastic. S3 has that premium feel with the metallic surrounding. The UI is def superior to the one X too. The S3 is a sleek phone

Following the very disappointing announcement of the S3 I gave up my S2 And bought a HTC one x. The only drawback is the battery life and major pro is the LCD2.

I prefer the look of the s3 and once every one starts rooting the s3 is gonna be the top phone on performance anyhow isnt it.The battery and sd card are the winners for me and as for the screen isnt the screen on the hox having loads of problems with clipping and stuff?Maybe this is why samsung went with a older screen?
For me, the design of the SGS3 is better than the OneX
The screen is moot, its way beyond my ability to discern anyway.
Being able to take spare batteries/spare SD card on holiday to shoot video/watch movies etc... makes the SGS3 way better than the OneX
Finally, the sexy new staying on if you are with your device, or auto dialing if you lift it to your head after reading an sms, is logical, simple, but brilliant.
One horse race IMO... and NO custom roms to mess up the Samy apps for me!!

I will wait for the Sony or Iphone in the summer.
This is my personal view, it looked right downer to me, the Samsung Galaxy SIII smartphone is one big very ugly beast, it also cheap plastic again.
When Sony already launch a Sony Xperia with 12 meg pixels with launch smartphones in summer with 13 & 16 meg pixel. Samsung stuck with 8 meg pixel, this is massive surpried since this is 4.8 inch in size.
I will wait for Sony or Iphone or buy the Sony Xeperia S in the summer.
A massive disappointment.

The Xperia S has 2011's hardware except from the camera and the screen ( snapdragon S3/Adreno 220. WTF Sony? ). I don't think the GS3 is that ugly. It's just the ONE X is too beautiful and classy!
i think raw material of Samsung low quality when compare with Apple.
For me personally, the important thing about a sdcard slot isn't the total amount of memory, but the ability to wipe my "system partition" completely.
Like on my PC, I like to keep my photos, videos, music and other pers. data on a physically seperate "drive".
That's why HTC is no option for me, regardless of the other specs.

You can see the diference in the build quality of the main body, i also noticed a the One X to be a little sluggish when moving through the menus, not as fluid at least.
Hearing other people's disappointment, i was disappointed too. However alot of the things people were complaining about I really don't see a problem.
Yea the htc one is a nice looking phone with a nice build. But so what's if the gs3 plastic? I remember numerous complaints about the gs2's plastic and how "cheap it felt". But look how light and thin it was. And check the drop test vs other phones as a result of this lightness. Now the design can be a little better i guess, but who cares it most likely is going to be in a case so it only matters how good the case looks.
The screen? I would rather a none pentile screen, but at 720 resolution I doubt I will be able to tell, and it being a super amoled screen i'm sure i'll love it.
Another benefit to this "dreaded plastic" to me is the removable cover. That is a big factor that would deter me from the htc one. I love being able to use a ext sd card and a removable battery is great too.
I'm not sure about the processor, but being a exynos I'm sure it will beat the tegra 3, in terms of performance and with a smaller architecture battery i bet too. Now me being in the States I'm sure we will unfortunately have a different processor than the international as the htc one does with the lte version. That to me is unfortunate.
And lastly, I'm sure that it will have a unlocked bootloader which alone would be reason enough for me to pick the gs3 over htc one.
If I still have the funds this year after getting a tablet, I'll most likely be getting the gs3. If funds don't materialize then there is always the next nexus or gs4.
Now we know of HTC's lineup which handset appeals to you?

I don’t know…….. The Ativ has the largest display and appears to have the best specs. The “big 3” all seem to have the same CPU.
I’m partial to HTC devices and I’ve been very happy with my HTC Titan. I may have been spoiled, but I now believe that a 4.7 inch display is probably a minimum perfect size. When we first heard rumors of the new HTC WP8 devices there were to have been three of them, with the “Flagship Device” having a 4.7 inch display. I’m not interested in going smaller, and I assume other Titan users have similar thoughts.
Also, what happened to the hype over WP8 devices having Nokia Maps? Do these new devices even have the new app? There seems to be no mention of it now.
I’m afraid I’m in wait-and-see mode, leaning slightly towards the ATIV for display size.
Where are you HTC? Where’s my big-screen Titan replacement?
For anybody that still isn't decided, WPCentral put together a comparison chart on the different 'Hero' phones. Honestly, after looking at it I may find myself with the Ativ.
6 months ago .....if the boot loader was unlocked, and the drivers open sourced, the 920 that is awesome hardware, from the screen, to CPU, to graphics, to camera.

Probably the most significant single attribute that any manufacturer has used to one-up the iPhone has been display size.
All of the HTC rumors prior to this week’s announcement revolved around the introduction of three new WP8 devices, one of which was to have had a 4.7 inch display.
There are way too many Titan and One X users that are not likely to be cool with a smaller display – not even .2 inches smaller. Thanks to Titan and One X, 4.7 inches is the new minimum.
I really hope to see something bigger and better from HTC soon.
Q: Do the HTC and Samsung devices come with Nokia Maps?
Q: Is the big battery in the ATIV removable?

While I like your reasoning, I can't help but notice that they called it the 8X. The X has been their "top of the line" brand, and while I suppose it's not impossible for them to introduce something like the 8X+, it sounds like they aren't really planning for it.
Samsung announced a new LPDDR3 which should be in phones next year. More storage less power consumption and faster!

I'll buy the 920 at the day of the release, but I really like to see Nokia pulling out all the stops - 41mp Pure View, 4.8" edge to edge screen, quad-core Krait, 3,300 mAh battery. I'd buy that monster in a heartbeat.

Quad core is just not needed for this OS. It would be more of a battery drainer if anything. Am so glad they have only put two core CPUs.
I like the Nokia 920 the most out of all that we have seen so far.
The ativ s also looks good. I like the HTC designs but I'm not so sure about HTC devices anymore. They seem to always suffer from some sort of build quality issue.

Well i like very much Samsung galaxy s4 than iphone 5. I like SmartPause and smart scolling fetures in this phone. i am very exciting for use this phone. really i want it as soon as possible.
Floating Touch. It was the main reason I wanted the Note 2 over the S3, only now I don't even need the s-pen. Everything else is a plus, but for my needs even the S3 specs with floating touch would be acceptable. BTW, I'm talking about the international S3 (I have the U.S. S3 and I'm sorely missing the Exynos features like Screen Modes and Multi Window ).
I like the....nothing there that is like-able....
I'll most probably buy the hTC One!

Nothing in terms of hardware specs has impressed me since every spec in the s4 has been out for a while now,
Actually I would choose any screen over amoled since it has very inaccurate colors, like my tan friends turns extremely orange in their pics, my blue clothes turns crystal blue, dark red turns red and worst of all dark areas details can't be seen as good as other screens as everything turns darker as it shouldn't be, white pixels looks gray
The camera is also something that isn't special, Sony have been used the same camera specs for long now, and sorry for hating but music playback has been worst with previous galaxy's compared to HTC and Sony,
And last the wipe hand over screen thing is the worst I have seen in screen development since it takes much more energy to do and gets slower to scroll between pictures and is also looking retarded to do in public than just simply swipe with your fingers, only thing that was good was the eye tracking thing, but that is software and would be easy for me to port while having a front face camera and root
Also Samsung provides system updates that is full of bugs so that they send you hundreds of versions of for example ics or jb, they are not testing everything properly before releasing their updates, I have no clue if this was a problem for s3 users but my s2 user friends complained a lot about it but I hope they has improved since that
It isn't worth upgrading to s4 from s3 since all software things will easily be portable and software was the only new stuff in the s4, as a big company as Samsung I'm very unimpressed of what they provided us
I would go for the xperia z because of waterproofing, design and it's until now positive chock resistance showed in all drop tests, music playback and it's top specs as Samsung and HTC have,
Second choice would be HTC ONE since HTC has the best screens ever applied on android phones, but the 4ultra pixel thing is actually something that I ain't interested of

I think we've all heard that before. Settings->Display->Screen Mode/Display Mode->Movie/Cinema = goodbye inaccurate colors. The LTE versions of the S2 and the U.S. S3 don't have that option since they use Adreno GPU's and no option was written for it. Plus the Galaxy S2 Skyrocket has strange screen colors compared to the other models.

So? The camera software is just as important in determining image quality as the hardware, and Sony's image processing has been observed as subpar compared to what Samsung has done on their devices.

Only the the S2, and that was the exception rather than the rule due to a poorly implemented Yamaha chip. The original Galaxy S and the S3 had far cleaner audio output then HTC and Sony's competition at the time. The international One X in particular had some pretty bad audio distortion. The HTC One using the Snapdragon chip is finally up to par with Samsung's low distortion and clean output.

How is swiping your hand above the screen taking more energy than swiping your hand on the screen? I'm not even sure if you're talking about Air Gestures or Floating Touch, which have completely different purposes.

While HTC and Sony don't provide any updates so you have bugs AND outdated software. I can't speak for the S2, but the S3 and Note 2 seem to be doing pretty well in the software department.
Only reason for me was the Exynos 5410, as the Snapdragon SoCs are disappointing to say the least. Samsung have still not confirmed which regions are getting the Octa, but based on the pre-orders most countries are going to be getting the s600 variant.
Battery size, RAM, SD Card slot, Screen size, CPU, camera resolution, improved build quality, and weight. I'm getting this phone because the Nexus 4 was a huge disappointment and I lost faith in hoping the next one will be a worthy replacement for my Galaxy Nexus.

As said I would never choose amoled, even changing the screen calibration the screen will be inaccurate in terms of colors, full HD isn't something to talk about, Samsung isn't the only providing it(almost all manufactured 2013 devices) but I see full HD as something negative, it's almost impossible to see the pixels in HD screens and more pixels would be something unnecessary taking A LOT of battery.
USB 3.0: I'm not even connecting my phone to the pc anymore since I can use it as my pc instead,
loading the battery, HDMI output and DLNA has been the only thing necessary for me in terms of connecting
About camera software, that would be even easier to port but I only need to download Photoshop touch and I would have all these features, and if you haven't seen yet since 2012 Sony released a lot of camera features to the xperia v which is also included in the upcoming and released devices, even thou it was released long before s4 they approve much more features than what the Samsung software provides.
If you are wondering the s3 software has already been ported since long ago and it wouldnt be harder to port the s4 software since it is still running on android.
About the swiping one again, would you look normal to interact with your phone as with humans? Wouldn't it take more energy to swipe your whole hand infront of your screen than with a finger? The finger is also much faster than swiping the whole hand...
About the image quality, old xperia arc was processing much better and sharper pics than all of the s2 models, and if you want to compare xperia z's cam pictures with Samsung's s4 it would be fair since both are 2013 devices, and s3 compared to even my old xperia ion is nothing and don't complain of pixels
About updates it was Sony Ericsson that had update issues, since Sony started they updated even the Ericsson devices, and if you are complaining about the Xperia Play then they wrote why it wouldn't get updated since ics is taking far more performance and the xperia play was a gaming phone
About floating touch, I have had the xperia sola with that feature, I barely used it ands it sucked a lot of battery when used, the galaxy seems to use it all the time in the other hand which will take even more battery along with having the front camera in use all the time tracking you, so that 2600mah won't help you having your phone without charging more than one day

Well, I really like the design of the S4. It's a smaller Note 2. I think it's the perfect size for me after 4 months of using the Note 2.
I like the new Exynos 5 Octa and I like the screen (want to test Gorilla Glass 3 so badly ).
I will definitely buy it but I need to sell my Note 2 (I wouldn't sell it right now because I don't want to use one month my old Nokia).

I have the same problem. I really want it but I want the Exynos 5 Octa version that will only come out on Q2(2nd Quarter) So I have to wait. In the mean timeI will just drool watching the people who will buy it first.:silly:

You're absolutely right, the only thing is, there's a lot of discussion thread out there about people criticizing the SGS4.
Here is my theory on complainers (100% not scientific)
Except for some (really few) real expert, most(not all) S4 haters don't have any valid points. All I see is a bunch of kids with unrealistic expectations and another bunch of frustrated HTC fanboy raiding on Samsung's forum like jealous bullies. (I'm not pointing fingers at anyone, if the hat fits you....)
People think they look more intelligent when they criticize about something(it’s called Illusory superiority). It makes you think they know something that you don't. But the real intelligent people are the one who can see beyond the surface. The SGS4 is an EVOLUTION of KING SGS3.
SGS4 might not be perfect but the fact that some people can't find one single good thing about it, proves that they are totally dishonest and probably iphone or HTC agents.

What? It doesn't matter the technology behind it AMOLED, LCD, etc., two displays calibrated to the same target will have exactly the same colors (except that AMOLED will have a much higher contrast ratio, which is actually a good thing). The S4 comes with aRGB (Adobe RGB) and sRGB (Movie) settings out of the box so you don't even have to do the hard work. There are wide-gamut LCD displays that also won't have accurate colors out of the box because they're not working in the standard sRGB color space. That's what sRGB emulation and color managed applications are for.

I'm not talking about colorful filters, I'm talking about the quality of the images written by the phone. Things like color balance, noise reduction, etc. are things Samsung has beaten their competitors at in the past, so there's no reason to believe the S4 won't be at least as good or better than the 13MP Xperia shots. And you can't use Photoshop Touch for things like dual camera recording, the ability to create GIF's with a static background using just the camera app, etc.

If you're using the phone with one hand (which is the only case I can think if in which you'd be moving your finger without moving the rest of your hand...unless you just like to use your phone strangely), then obviously you wouldn't be using the air gestures. I don't see how dragging your finger along the glass has any advantage to moving your hand or finger over the device. The whole hand thing is only for the air gestures, which are more for convenience, whereas floating touch is actually useful like using a mouse with your device.

Really? Reviews called the Ion's camera "average" ( http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_ion_att-review-784p6.php ), and all the top smartphone camera shootouts have the S3/Note 2 either right behind or tied with the iPhone 5, while other devices were noticeably worse.

Excuses. Samsung is still the most consistent Android manufacturer in terms of updates by far. All of their flagships get updates and new features while the confusing distribution across carriers of other OEM devices are left hoping.

So you've used the S4? Sorry Samsung can't do anything about Sony's poor implementation of a feature. I've left Smart Stay on on my S3 when I was running stock and I didn't have any problems with battery life.

Why would they change their design direction? People vote with their wallets, and their devices are outselling competing Android phones by the truckload.
PLEASE someone tell me the S4 has FM radio?
Samsung's Always On is honestly trash in comparison. It basically shows me the time and that's it. Motorola's shows the time and ALL your missed notifications as well as the ability to quickly get a preview of the notifications without having to unlock your phone.
I really hope Samsung fixes this when they release Android N.
In the meantime, does anyone know of a third-party app similar to Motorola's Active Display?
It seems like most android fans GREATLY overestimate what third party apps can do. A lot of important features on phones require a level of hardware-software integration you're just not going to get from anywhere other than the manufacturer of your phone.
Always oh displays is one such example. Having an amoled display is far from being able to just use it always on. The standby power consumption would be prohibitive.

What do you mean? The AOD is just a piece of software which wakes every minute and changes the screen. The screen is amoled. It doesn't matter which app it uses.

Yes it is just a piece of software, it's not magic that's for sure. However it isn't something you'll ever find a replacement in the Play Store.
Just like no Playstore camera app is even close to the stock camera app from any of the reputable manufacturers like Samsung, LG, HTC or Huawei.

That's mostly because of closed sources, proprietary software, licencing & patents, etc and not because of incompatibility.
I found a few apps that do similar things as Moto Active Display. They are AC Display, Active Notification, and Dynamic Notifications.
The problem with using them on different devices is that Motorola's Moto X series of devices have 4 infrared sensors in each 4 corners of the screen so the device is aware of when you reach to grab it. Most other phones only have the proximity sensor which is not as precise nor as flexible.
I'd love to see some opinion and testing of AcDisplay on the S7.

Wave to wake works about 50 percent of the time, although it really is more "rub to wake". Raise to wake needs a way too forceful and deliberate action, it wastes battery, and for some reason if you double tap the screen it disables the fingerprint unlock for your next unlock. So TL;DR - don't use.
Well, let's hope Samsung does more with the Always On with future updates and Android N.

Hopped on just to second this. Moto's active display kept me with their devices for years. It's one of those features that just functionally improves phone usage in a dramatic way. Dramatic enough to command my loyalty for generations of devices. Just got an S7 and there's no comparison. Might be heading back.

You're a new user to a 2+ year old phone. You're not included in their market share. No manufacturer cares what used phone you prefer.
I don't recall my S7A AOD. Did my S9+, S8+, and Note 8 address these issues?
