I think, that in upright world we should get at least android 4.3.x update.
But life isn't like that, so sadly it might be a rumor.
Hope we will see any proof from Samsung or leaks from right sources.
Please.. It ain't gonna happen. Just buy a new device if you want more updates.

Maybe it will, but that's ported roms you're talking about. This thread is about Samsung updates right?
Samsung one day may need to match Apple's 4 os versions for each iphones. Thought 3GS was a fluke but iphone 4 got os 4 to 7. Apple is continuing to sell the 4S meaning it will go from os 5 to 8 too.

Yeap, I was told the same by one of the Engineer who works in Samsung.
I feeling bad because i just bought it and this news..Oh man!!!
4.3 is never going to happen.
The Galaxy S2 update proces will stop at 4.1.2 I think. The big problem here is the fact that Qualcomm stopped making drivers for the Qualcomm chip inside some Galaxy S2 variants like the American T-Mobile and Skyrocket variants after Android 4.1.2.
Samsung can only port 4.2.2 to the Exynos variants (because they make their own drivers), that will be the I9100(M,P,T), I777 and Epic 4G Touch variants.
Will Samsung choose to update those variants to 4.2.2 and leave the QC variants at 4.1.2? Or will they keep it simple and stop at 4.1.2 like HTC did with the HTC One S (2 variants one with a Snapdragon S3 which QC stopped supporting and another variant with a Snapdragon S4 which QC still supports)?
An Android 4.3 update for the Exynos variants would mean those American variants will be surpassed by 2 Android versions and that is never going to happen.

Well Samsung made those variants so they should care, the reason for all those variants are all the different bands those carriers want to support. I really hate all the different American variants, Murica before all. Samsung should release just one variant woldwide so they wouldn't have these problems.
But those variants are a good reason for Samsung to stop updating the S2. The Exynos chipset is more than capable to run Android 4.2.2 or 4.3 for that matter so they can't use arguments like the SoC is to slow or RAM is too low. It's kinda convient for them that QC stopped the support.
But all in all the S2 got enough updates. From 2.3.x to 4.1.x is very nice for an Android phone.

4.3 isn't likely for SGS2, but looks like we might be getting 4.4 Kitkat
EDIT: Well that might be a bit premature, 4.4 will have lower requirements than 4.3, so SGS2 will certainly be able to handle it, it's just up to Samsung now whether they want to do a new 4.4 rom for SGS2.
Even if 4.3 Official is released
i will stick with Cyanogenmod
TWz is very laggy
At least I learned something here. Never trust Samsung. Never trust ARM. Never trust Android. And never trust XDA members and their belief that customs ROMs will magically fix everything.
Open source hardware I say.

Samsung Italy has reportedly confirmed which of the Korean company’s Android devices will receive an Ice Cream Sandwich update, with models such as the Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 each supposedly in line for a 4.0 upgrade. The Italian arm of the firm listed the GSII and the Tab 10.1, HDBlog claims, along with the Galaxy Note, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Tab 7.7 and Tab 7.0 Plus as all being eligible for a tasty frozen treat. However, don’t expect it any time soon.
According to the report, the updates won’t begin until Q2 2012, potentially six months after Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus goes on sale. Samsung confirmed to us last night at the kick-off of the Galaxy Note European Tour that the oversized smartphone would get Android 4.0, as reported in our Galaxy Note vs Galaxy Nexus hands-on, but said that, since the company had been working closely with Google on ICS, they expected to beat competitors to the market with upgrades for existing devices.
(Source :http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-android-4-0-ics-updates-in-2012-reportedly-detailed-28191699/)
I hope, we won't have to wait that long...
Waiting 6m+ would be a joke in my opinion - the GS2 is the leading current Android phone in performance and sales, for it to take so long to get 4.0 makes the whole platform seem a bit weak seeing as by then we'll presumably be in the midst of hype building for iphone 5 which would a) have new features ics doesn't have and b) copy anything worthwhile from ics.
I don't believe extended Nexus exclusivity does either Google or Samsung any favours at all...
i don't like to wait.
i read somewhere that it wont get 4.0 until after the galaxy s3 is released.
me too think so. Galaxy S got gingerbread update only after S2 released. So.... I doubt it might be the bad wait more news coming soon...
But anyway v will get it wont v.
Or if v need it faster CM will always be there to help us

Initially I heard ICS for S2 coming next year only, thats fine looking at time required to test stability but throwing the it in Q2 is ridiculous!

Won't Samsung have had ics to develop the galaxy nexus? If so wouldn't they have been developing the upgrades for their phones, negotiated as part of the deal to make the nexus phone?
I think galaxy S2 will be the first to receive the update before any other device, firstly Samsung and Google worked extremely closely on some of the software aspects of ICS namely the Camera app and the launcher itself, also the Galaxy nexus share some hardware components with the Galaxy S2.
Also lets face it the Galaxy nexus is underwhelming specs-wise except the Screen of course (Even though it's Pentile).
Don't forget that Samsung also want to sell a LOT of their nexus device and making it the only device in their range to have ics makes complete business sense. They've sold lots of sgs2 already, time for the nexus.
I know it may be a little frustrating for us, but as someone has already said, we'll get it much earlier via a leaked ROM.

Q2 2012? F**k me...
What are people doing with their phones to make them slow and desperately need ICS? Am I missing a free hookers and drugs app?
I agree we will get within weeks of the launch whether it be from Samsung or an AOSP ROM doesn't bother me because the one main gripe I have with AOSP ROM's is the lack of hardware acceleration and the absolutely terrible camera app, Samsung's Touchwiz is hardware accelerated which is why it is so smooth.
It does make perfect business sense to delay ICS for the GS2 but people don't buy the "Google Phone" because of its specifications they buy it because its the "Google Phone" the one advantage of doing this is the quick updates, other than that there are far better devices, the Galaxy Nexus isn't even released yet and its already outclassed by devices such as ours that have been out for over 6 months.
ICS and the screen are the only saving graces of the Galaxy Nexus. needless to say it will still sell extremely well because as I mentioned its the "Google Phone".

From qhat I've read: no
I see no reason not to get it... Nexus S got it and runs it ultra fast. That means Galaxy S is more than capable of running it! Also, Nexus S needed to be updated to 2.3.6 to be able to upgrade. I believe we will see leaks for our devices as well. I think that is one reasons Samsung never released TouchWiz 4 for our device, I believe it will come in this ICS update (if they make one).

Day dreaming? Why would they port the old crappy TouchWiz 3 on ICS when they have an already ported and new version of TouchWiz 4?
Also... Samsung Wave got TouchWiz 4 in Bada 2.0 update, I don't see why Galaxy S won't get it in ICS (both are HUGE updates and both devices share the same hardware).
..
To make their clients happy and keep staying with Samsung products? One thing is sure... if they update SGS to ICS, I will keep buying Samsung phones and I'm sure I'm not the only one who will do the same!
Nexus One doesn't have i9000's power...
I hate android fragmentation. SGS is capable to run ICS withouth any problems but its questionable will samsung release update. That fragmentation will cost android, now or later but it will damage androids reputation.
it is a WHEN question not IF
I hear samsung is going to ufficial update sgs to ics... but first sgs II...
Then lets keep our fingers crossed
Me thinks Samsung will not release ICS officially for SGS. But we will get CM9 anyway so I don't care

But a lot of manufacturers are working fast on ICS, that's nice to see though (minus the bloat).

Re: codeworkx will no longer make CM for the S4.
Generally there were 3 developers who maintained samsung devices
1. Codeworkx
2. Entropy512 and
3. Xplodwild
Of them the first 2 have vowed to never waste their time on exynos
Xplodwild is still there but how much time he will have I have no idea..
It will be very difficult to get competent and experienced developers so quickly ..
So initially S4 will definitely be behind in AOSP development IMO
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
The way Samsung is treating the dev's & developer community I doubt anyone from CM team will be left with Samsung devices in near future :/
If you want CM or AOSP don't buy Samsung's devices. They never have offered any real support toward third party development. Ask Entropy512 and he'll tell you the whole story. They promise something but never live up to their words. I'm sure some people here still remember the Exynos saga.

I wouldn't be sure of that. The most experienced devs for Exynos are sick of it and won't support S4. Maybe new will come, but will they as good as them?
CM is a community-project so devs are not forced to develop for a device even if it's popular if they want they do. I think S4 will be far behind other AOSP devices. Just take a look at S2 and S3. If you want CM don't for Samsung, go Sony or Nexus. Don't be disappointed about CM on S4 (if it will be released?), you have been warned.

Agree and disagree with your comment. 100% agree with the smoothness part but sammy 4.1.2 roms with a good stock kernel offer the best battery life (Up to 7hrs screen on time, my record was 6 hrs screen-on time spread over about 1 day)

Unfortunately, based on what other brands are doing, we cannot blame so much Samsung. We got last official update few weeks ago for a device which is in the market from beginning of 2011. Of course who bought the device one year after it was in the market (like me!) got a better price but having more or less one year of software support and counting mostly on XDA community to keep the device alive.
We should blame who has promised 18 months of updates but failed to keep their promises (I know HTC for example).
Most of the cases there are not technical reasons not updating devices but just marketing. I would be happy having 24 months as minimum software support.
Correct me if Im wrong but I havent read any on that article that it is official? So why go on rampage blaming Samsung on the statement which might be a fallacy? You will just stress yourself.

4.3 seems a little far fetched. ....considering the aging of our device .I doubt Samsung will push any further updates for us ...
And its so silly. They said that s2+ will get the update bcuz it has more power than S2 (seems lik a marketing strategy 2 me)...
On tge the latest report it says Samsung owns 47% of all android devices.i think out of those 30% represents S2, S3 & S4 .
S2 still has a very large scale of users , its a shame Samsung is leaving us in the dark..

But dont blame the Manufacturers too much
Everyone should think back to the Times where Android wasnt there
Symbian times for Example... Updates came pretty Slow BUT they came and where everytime pretty Bugfree and with Really Good Performance and all that
The Update Floods on the Android OS doesnt makes it any Easyer for the Manufacturers nor the Devs i think
Google makes everything very Complicated for everyone, and i am sure that all Manufacturers first gonna bring out the newest versions to the newest Phones
Why ...Pfff Because they Have to keep The NEW things more up to date then the Old .
Well I know other nonnexus android manufacturers are much worse. I'm not even sure the HTC Sensation and Xperia arc of 2011 received 4.1.2 yet.
But seriously samsung can't compare with those manufacturers as they are not as big as samsung.
Samsung should see how apple gives software updates to old phones as apple is the only manufacturer as big as samsung and hence their main competitor.

Here is where you miss the point.
Apple has like what 5 devices to support?
3GS, 4, 4S, 5
Whereas Samsung has a portfolio the size of an Apple Farm.. XD
So they focus on the newer models which is natural, to boost their sales and try to keep up with others.
And while they do, Google keeps launching updates after updates.
One such example is,
Galaxy S Advance, It was supposed to get ICS but by the time it's turn came, ICS was outdated, so Samsung directly gave it GB to JB.
I think we will get our 4.2 update somewhere around my birthday in Nov'13

I think what samsung should instead do is to give the best support for those who paid more for the premium Galaxy S line and note line, otherwise their image will be no better than their mid range and budget phones line.
It's their own fault since the beginning actually. Their flagships so far is S, S2, S3, S4, Note 1 and Note 2. However, each flagship got so many variants. For example, the S4 has 14 variants including the zoom and active according to wikipedia.
Samsung might be able to convince people to buy their product. However, I'm afraid they can't convince people to buy their product for the second time.

The only phones mentioned were the S3 and S4. There was no other device mentioned.
Most online news sites have reported this. Sources :
Engadget
Android Authority
Sammobile
Andoid Spin
We will most likely get the upgrade. This is not a Samsung hate thread. I just wanna clear up the fact that the only devices that are covered by the update announcement are the S3 and S4. Samsung is most likely just giving the Note 3 more exclusive time with 4.3 and delaying our upgrades after the sales of their new phablet take off.

False , Note 2 is getting
What Engadget reported is not true. Here you go with the official demo by samsung. You can see that Note 2 is getting the 4.3 version by october this year.

He says the S3 and Note 2 will receive updates in October. Fair enough he doesn't actually mention android 4.3, but as far as I'm aware, the compatibility with galaxy gear requires Bluetooth 4.0 which is enabled through android 4.3? Not so sure about that last bit so please do correct me of I'm mistaken.
I hope we get the new features of the note 3, I quite fancy the look of the new s note and air command.

Hey I'm glad I read this post confirming N2 is due an update Oct '13. I had my doubts because other threads said N2 update was not mentioned at the unpacking.
I follow your reasoning that the update will likely be 4.3. Otherwise connectivity with the Gear will not be possible. It's been unequivocally stated that 4.3 bluetooth is required - where else would the capabilitycome from? Sammy want us to buy the Gear. It all ties in with rumors Sammy planned skipping 4.2 for 4.3

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. Usually I'd think they would wait a couple more months to let the note 3 sales ride out before updating the note 2, but in the interest of getting the gear out there, they might just push it early.
I won't be buying a gear as its not for me, but if we get an early 4.3 update with the new note 3 features because of it, then I'm so very glad it's coming out!!
It's sucks
A year after the Note 2 was release and Samsung did not updated Note 2
that sucks, many other Devices had the 4.2.2 and 4.3 and im in 4.1.2
Wifi drains my standby battery like there's no tomorrow. No such problem on my Nexus 4 (or any HTC One S).
I sincerely hope 4.3 sorts this problem out.
. No it will get it and if you want them now use Custom rims

I do, a ROM that doesn't utilize the Spen fully on my Note doesn't stick around my phone for long. what's the point of not using it if it's there? Might as well buy a Sammy Mega then:silly:

+1
Plus stock camera and samsung drivers are far beyond any other camera app in the market, CM and AOSP cameras are just pathetic and correct me if I'm wrong but even if S-PEN works in non-samsung based Roms, it doesn't detect the pressure of it.
So I'm still waiting for the update, then the great devs of this forum can do the magic.
