[Q]Tethering and worrying about getting charged.

I am getting my tablet tomorrow, and had a quick question about tethering. I have had friends get notices about tethering when doing it with a laptop, but would I have to worry with a tablet as much? I don't have any idea how they check, but figured it being an android based device, it wouldn't set off any alarms.

What exactly do you mean? The Transformer doesn't have data so you can't use it as a mobile hotspot and if you're talking about using your phone to tether to it, then that has nothing to do with the TF.
Tethering from your cellphone to a pc/laptop is no different then tethering to a tablet. Not sure how you were caught as it's fairly unheard of to get caught while tethering on a rooted cellphone, but if you were caught and are worried then your best bet is not to do it again.
Once again, the TF is just doing the "receiving" part of the data. You won't get in trouble for using your TF what you would allegedly get in trouble fir is using your cellphone to tether to other devices, doesn't matter if it's a laptop or tab (unless you pay for the service)

They probably noticed your friends tethering cause the sites they were accessing looked like something a PC would access. Like playing a MMORPG, or attempting to download large files.

I strongly suspect they're not doing deep packet inspection or anything else that would allow them to know this.
What is more likely is that your friends were gobbling a lot more data than a smartphone user should and that trigger an automatic message on the (correct) assumption they were tethering their device.
I've tethered both my laptop and my tablet to all of my Android phones and have never been notified. Of course, YMMV

I've also tethered for over a year, light browsing/emails of course, and haven't seen any charges. If you take it too far (think torrents/video streaming), would you be surprised that someone would notice?

I was asking here because it in my mind had more to do with tablets in general. And yes I am talking about tethering with my Nexus One.
And my friend was running a stock vanilla N1 when he got the notice. I have not, and I have on occasion tethered my laptop when I needed a real computer for a minute.
As for the amount of data used, I know I gobble it up on my phone since most of my time at work is spent surfing the web, or watching netflix. And as for the tablet, I just want the internet on it for the same stuff i do on my phone, like Google Reader, and apps like that. I have no plan on doing things like downloading torrents or anything that like that.

But streaming is also something done on a phone all of the time...like youtube or netflix or Pandora...
Why would high usage (under the data plan cap) cause anyone to flag anything?

I believe that AT&T and Verizon have anti-tethering measures in place

Hmm, well they both block tethering apps in the market (Which doesnt do much).I guess Verizon is the only one that actually tries to prevent tethering.

Older versions of tethering programs for the iphone actually tagged the data as tethering data via the tethering dta route hence people were caught tethering without a tethering plan. The new version of pdanet (i forgot if this was the one) routes the data through the same route as normal phone data so its harder to detect. The old programs did this because it was easier to code i think.
Thats is all i know in regards to carriers and tethering as i had to research it for my dad and his ipad. Sprint as far as my own experience is concerned hasnt dinged me personally and i tether all the time, however my usage is within the realm of normal for a smartphone.

My understanding of those getting hit with charges or letters from carriers that are tethering has to do with their LARGE consumption of data. For example someone who uses his/her cellphone data to turn their house into a wireless network running laptops, computers, etc.
I hardly doubt that if you're tethering here and there to download something to your TF when you have no wifi access that it will be of concern.
Take a look at your average data consumption on your phone and make sure you continue to stay in that range and you dont have anything to worry about.

I 4g tether all day erryday to my xoom, laptop, and all my friends ****. I use in upwards of 7gb of data a month on my phone. Man I love sprint

Big ISPs are able to do deep packed inspection and there are ways to to identify much of the tethering traffic. As noted, though, if your usage is not abnormal (and I mean ABNORMAL) they have little incentive to piss you off and stop it. The people that WILL get dinged, and dinged hard are those using their service to provide access to many others. Say, an office buying one phone and tethering their office to it. Or worse, someone re-selling access via their tethered device.
Us geeks tethering our tablets to our phones (likely already on an upgraded plan) are not threatening. Yet.

question for 3G user

i would like to know do you guys actually use it as a phone or do you guys have 2 sim card? (one for your phone and one for 7.7)
i am not going to have 2 sims as it is too expensive for me and if i wana switch the sim from my desire hd to 7.7 i will need to switch off my phone which is very inconvenient. Which makes me think that even if i have the phone feature will i actually use it? or should i just get the wifi version and connect to the internet through my phone.
also if i wana insert/remove sim for the 7.7 do i have to switch off the tab?

The Tab will restart by itself when you insert a SIM. You can turn off packet data for your Desire while the SIM is in another device and use it on wifi.
For myself, I've not bothered to use the 7.7 as a daily phone since I like to walk around unencumbered. But, for short weekend trips and the like it is useful to just have one all-purpose device.

No need for 2 Sims as long as your sim has both data and voice you are good to go.

I think the question was more was it worth it to have a data-enabled 7.7 when they already have an Android phone with a data plan and if the phone functionality of the 7.7 was a compelling reason to get it over the 6810 model.
It's really a choice that you'll have to make yourself based on your usage and finances. If you can use your phone as a hotspot for the 7.7 and don't ever plan on using it to make voice calls (you can still use various apps to make calls with your Google Voice account over wifi). But, charges for a separate data plan can add up and may not be worth it. I have a SIM from my work-provided Elevate hotspot so I use that with the 7.7, but if I didn't have that comped I'd probably go without a second plan.
Bottom line, in this case I would probably spend the extra money to get the 6800 over the 6810. The 6800 works fine over wifi without a SIM (although it will have an annoying message on the stock lockscreen about it). Then, you'd have that full functionality when you needed to use it with your phone's SIM.

I still have a phone and this tablet mainly because i don't wanna part with my good sprint sero plan. However for now i do have a tablet data plan for the 7.7 and i have made a call or 2 using a voip client and it worked no problem.

I use my 7.7 as a daily driver because I'm usually just sitting at work most of the time anyway. If I know I'm going to be on the move, I can just as easily swap my SIM into my GS2 or Note instead, and leave the 7.7 at home. It's nice having options!

I am using my 7.7 with a data only sim which I got from my cable/ISP company for free. On my phone I only have a 100 MB/Month data plan (using it only for e-mail and this plan is more than enough) and I am using the tablet for internet browsing and entertainment.
IMHO if you already have a data enabled phone and a good data plan it is not worth to spend extra cash for a 3G enabled 7.7, as u can use the phone as a hotspot

Man, I wish my ISP would give me a data SIM for free. I need to remind myself that I calibrate my cost/value estimates based on the BS that US carriers require, and not every country is like that.

Tab 7.7 with 3G sim + HTC HD2 Android with 3G sim. My ISP has a neat deal where for an extra $10SGD/mth, I get to use an additional sim that shares the data of my main plan.

I have the Gnote using my ATT sim card (from my previous Atrix).
Im paying for the 2G data plan along with my 700 minutes phone plan.
On weekends, I pull the Note's sim and put it in my 7-7.....
I have no problems as the 7.7 does fit in my pocket about 90%.
All is well!!! I like it this way!

Same here exept my provider delever 2 extra 3g simcard for free. If this was not the case i dont think i would buy another plan for the tab

I got a multi sim plan from my provider in Singapore. Basically it's 2 sim card tied to the same mobile number. I put one into my mobile and another one in the tab and from there I share both outgoing voice and data on a single mobile plan. I do need to select one of my device as the primary incoming phone and this can be easily switched by sending a short code through the phone which I want to designate as the primary phone. With this I use my tab as my phone on weekends.

How well does this Tab work for any of you that use it as a daily driver? I'm SERIOUSLY thinking about trading my GSM GNex off for one, and just use it for a daily driver. I thought about the 7.0 Plus, but this is so much better specced, and the size difference is fairly negligible between this Tab and the 7.0 Plus, so why not go with the better version? I figure a set of headphones, like the Klipsch S4a, and I'm in business.

I have one simcard at the moment in the tab, and haven't used my HTC Desire in a week.
But I consider putting the card back in the Desire and get a prepaid dataplan for 14.99 a month with 5GB at 3g speed and unlimmited GPRS.

I would recommend getting the 3g version of the 7.7 because the signal reception is better than a phone because of the increased size. I was on holiday recently and I could not get a reliable high speed Internet connection on my Note where I was staying so tethering was not possible, but I got a good high speed connection on the 7.7. Also, with a 3g version of the 7.7 it can act as a backup phone and allow the 7.7 and phone to use the Internet independently.

The 7.7 is very good for all round use and the screen resolution is a vast improvement over the original P1000 which makes it much better for Web browsing, watching videos etc. It is also very portable because of the 7" format and slim design and can easily be carried in ladies handbags or large pockets.
However, there are certain situations with any Tablet or smart phone where it is not possible to zoom Internet pages making it very difficult to select items using fingers for example when selecting items on financial charts when trading. You can overcome this problem by using a Bluetooth mouse or wired mouse and USB adapter. I would like Samsung to add their S-Pen to the 7.7 like the Note which would solve the problem without the need to carry extra hardware.

Thanks. Yeah, if Sammy wants to differentiate, S-Pen at 5.3,7.7,and 10.1 makes sense. I would just buy the Note, but kind of curious about this year's model.

3G or not 3G

I already have a 16gb Nexus 7 but but I am upgrading to a 32gb and was wondering whether it was worth getting the 3G version.
I like the idea of the 3G as I would probably use it abroad with a PAYG SIM bought locally but whilst at home I would not be using a SIM, relying on WI-FI and hotspotting to my phone.
So I would like to know
1) If using without a SIM is the performance/battery life any different to the non 3G version
2) Is/will the device be in high street stores by Christmas or will it be yet another Nexus 4 fiasco

Well, I would normally say, "Its better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it." Which is why I paid the extra $50 for one. I dont know what the price difference is for you in the UK, tho. 30 quid?
You may even find that you would just rather have the 3G option at home since it can be kind of a hassle to turn on the wifi and connect it.
I'm not sure about your other questions, tho since I don't have mine yet.

I use tablet talk and WiFi tethering on my cheap android phone. This allows me to data roam and send/receive SMS direct(ish) to my tablet.
I can even make calls from my tablet provided I have my BT headset connected to my phone for incoming audio.
Only reason I would really consider the 3g is if someone hacks it to make standalone calls (people are working on trying to do just that).

It depends on what you want.. If you travel a lot or go to places that doesn't have wifi and want to use the tablet.. Then get the lte.

Exactly, it all depends on what you are going to use it for, im mostly ever going to use it whilst im in my home with WiFi, so i went went that model.

You can easilly tether you smartphone with the tablet, via BT or WiFi. I prefer BT because it's battery efficient and more discreet, so for me LTE version is just a waste of money.

If you live in the UK, it will be long time before LTE is countrywide, so far it's only the big city's. I agree with the above posts, waste of money buying any LTE at the moment.

I also own a Wifi only Tablet and don´t miss the 3G option. I bet most of you guys already own a decent smartphone and use it for tethering purposes On the other hand, if you intend to use your Tablet most the time with eg. google Maps as a navigation device, a built in SIM might be more comfortable instead of having to use your smartphone for tethering

Sure you can easily tether with your smartphone, but that sucks battery out of your phone pretty fast, if you use that feature often. So it all comes down to the usage pattern. I travel a lot and as a result I use my Nexus 7 long periods without WiFi access, so the LTE version offers me the freedom to be online without sucking precious juice from my phone. It`s like always a matter of usage and preference. What`s a waste of money for some is freedom and comfort for other`s.

Same here I use my nexus for everything now I've only been using my s4 for emails and calls. I like the bigger screen anyway for videos and games and even reading articles and browsing

I have one LTE and one wifi version of the tablet.
If you can afford the LTE I think you should get it. Practically, the other features of the tablet are the same so you can only benefit with LTE over wifi. The only reason I would get only wifi is if you can get it very cheap and your mobile (e.g. LTE) needs are 100% met by something else (like smartphone). If you have a big discount coupon or similar you may get the wifi version very cheap. I got $60 off my wifi version, and you might get an even better deal.
The LTE version has lots of flexibility, even if you do not use LTE now you may in another year. The LTE bands covered by the tablet are very good. If you have this version you can get a prepaid account for 30 days or longer, and stop paying if no longer needed. You can get 2GB to 4GB prepaid data plan for about $25 to $40 a month if you have no other plan sharing. With plan sharing you might add it for as little as $10 a month.
I use the LTE version for maps, quick email reading and response, and web browser search. There is no time wasted on tether configuration, management, and setup. Also, I limit LTE data over-use with airplane mode, by allowing wifi to download large files.
My wifi only tablet is best used at home where I have constant wifi available. Configuring wifi tethering while mobile is not convenient for me.
If you typically upgrade in a few years, then when selling the tablet later you will recover a higher price for the LTE version, so that offsets some initial price too.

I will also chime in and say my phone stays in my pocket more when I commute to school. I love having LTE. Like others have said you can tether.. But you're killing the battery on two devices. You phone and your tablet while you use it. My phone's battery is thanking me greatly.. Lol I also now use my nexus 7 for reading, surfing, games and media and with mysms I don't even have to pull my phone out when I get a text

4G LTE phone are quite cheap these days example Lumia 625 or iPhone 5/5c on contract, as one needs a phone always, and share the data connection with your tablet over WIFi tether. Save yourself from two separate connection plans! Saved money, buying a 16GB wifi model (32GB aren't available here yet), plus the wifi version is equipped with GPS unlike ipads

That's not cutting it for me I need my mobility. Some times I just take my nexus 7 and leave my phone home. With GV and Skype or some other SUDO VoIP app I receive all my communications (Email, SMS, IM) and am able to work (DroidEdit Pro), (Junos Pulse), (RSA Secure ID), (PocketCloud). Without LTE this wouldn't be possible..

I have a 2000mAh battery my old friend, so in the end all depends clearly on personal usage and preference as you say.

I bought the lte version, just because I could but in hindsight maybe one of the most attractive points of the n7 is the price and the lte versions almost cost twice as much. Maybe I should have just bought the wifi version....

I got LTE because I had the previous 3G model and a second sim card.
Even though, I wish the ROM support would be better. I still wait for the official CM 10.2.

Enabling the Tethering App (hotspot) on Verizon Galaxy s5

Has anyone figured out the best way to enable the wifi tethering capability?
I know on the s4, all the roms came out with this feature, it seems the s5 is still not rooted yet, what is everyone using, exploit or app?

this has been posted, but the best way to accomplish this right now without root is with FoxFi ( paid as far as i know and use now ) .. then USB or Bluetooth tether. you can then while tethered activate "wifi share" for your wifi devices. ..... if there is another method please someone post it!

Verizon may have made their last move. I just bought my phone with new 2 year contract, can i return and cancel my contract within a certain time period or am I inevitably effed?
I can not and will not put up with anymore of big Red's nazi ways, I am paying for a service and at the price im paying more than justifies my using of said service in any and every way that i want. If this does not get resolved soon, its a deal breaker for me and verizon. Not that it will make any difference...
and I hate that it would essentially make me move to a lesser carrier with less coverage and internet speed, but big red is starting to do that guv'mint thinking and i dont like where this is headed.

I require a real wifi tether, usb and bluetooth are too restrictive and time consuming.
I hope a few of the more experienced devs can chime in on whether this is something to wait for or just return/sell the device immediately?

If you have one of their new plans which I'm assuming you do since you upgraded, you absolutely can use native hotspot. I ran it yesterday. You have to turn it on via settings instead of the traditional way of tapping the Wi-Fi app.

I gave up the unlimited data plan and went with the Share Everything with 6gb of data. I did an analysis of my data usage for the past year and found that I never used more than 2gb a month. The unlimited talk and text is more important to me than unlimited data. Although I use the web quite a bit on the phone, I use wifi at home and at work, so it limits my 4G data usage substantially.
Verizon will eventually find a way to eliminate unlimited data altogether, or with some of the new Internet legislation being pushed throttle the bandwidth to the point that it's useless.
I don't understand what people are doing to use 30gb a month or higher unless you are using the plan as your home ISP service connecting multiple devices, or streaming movies all day long.

I have Verizon Home Fusion for home internet and I do not have wifi at work. Largest amount of data I can subscribe to per month is 30GB/month, for my home. I'm too far off the road for cable, DSL, and I didn't want Satellite (which still has limits).
I'm grandfathered into unlimited. I use about 30 GB a month tethering, mostly updates for the XBOX One, downloading stuff from the usenet, streaming Netflix or HBO Go to my iPad when I'm at my camper, which is in the woods.
I hope you have an understanding now of how someone can use 30 GB per month.

On an average month, prior to acquiring my GS5, I was using about 45gb of data. That's web surfing, PC and Xbox 360 gaming, and streaming videos. On HEAVY months, I was up around 75gb of data used. My lightest month to date of data usage was 29gb of data. No way in heck I am giving up my unlimited when I have no home landline internet.. This IS my salvation.

Well in response to the OP and to others who may be confused, WIFI tether (as well as bluetooth and usb) is built in and available as long as you have the share everything plan. Until we get root there will be no native wifi hack. I've been told a talented dev has an s5 in hand, i bet it wont be too long until root is achieved, after which native hacks will be forthcoming

It takes time, has anyone here had the s4 before the s5? Do you recommend me to get the s4 or s5? I'm looking to upgrade but I have to pay full price for the phone because I use about 100 gb every month, the only two things that make me doubt is that wifi tether is not posible yet and since I eat my fingernails I can't open the usb with my fingers on the S5 lmao

On that note, (heh) if you wanted to, and I wanted to, but was talked out of by a dumb BBY mobile rep, was getting the Note 3 which is rootable.

Thanks for your reply but I need to activate on the unlimited plan and although when I'm home I don't use that much but when traveling it sure is much cheaper than paying 7-20 bucks a day for WiFi access in some places.... not having root is no good in this particular case especially because I rely on it for work and has never been an issue until now. And giving more money to Verizon is not an options unlimited is already 125 per month

I'm currently still using my n3 cause it's rooted and running my rom. It's got Wi-Fi tether hacked as do most roms.

What I would do if I were you. Put your 4G SIM card back in your old device until root becomes available. That way you have the Wifi Tether and can use your Unlimited data. And at the same time you can use your S5 for all your apps and such. But use the old device for calling and texting. Just my suggestion. You are lucky, I would never give up that unlimited plan. And these devs are extremely clever you'll have Wifi Tethering on your S5 in no time.

Not an option. Took BestBuy up on their trade in offer. Didn't consider this at the time. But for the future, now I will know better...
