My camera says it can't connect to camera why, i tried re flashing the rom it worked but when i switch to front camera it happens again, so im just confused is it the romS or my camera, *I tried different roms and the same thing happens, Im not sure if this was because i updated my bootloader and radio....Can someone just give me sum type of info, other than that i believe the Nexus 4 is a BEAST device.......
I believe its your camera. I own two nexus 4's and no problem with the camera. Flash it to stock. Lock the bootloader and RMA it. Actually flash back to stock and see if your problem is still there. Then you can RMA.

Hi there,
I recently bought an used milestone 2. I discoverd that the camera is taking blurry pictures. It seems like that the auto focus is waaay out of focus. I read blogs and solutions for a while now before posting this tread, but without succes. When I bought the phone there was miui installed on it. I figured out that it could be an bug, so I flashed to the stock rom, however, the camera still takes blurry pictures. I have tried almost every possible settings in the camera, downloaded various camera apps, flashed it to the stock rom, but the camera still takes blurry pictures.
Anyone any idea how to fix this ? I have gone through the forum, without any success.
Has anyone got any idea?

Could it be a hardware problem?

No, I dont think so. The handset is in good condition and everything works just fine. The camera is just way out of focus!

If you got stock firmware and did a full wipe data/cache with factory reset, I'd say it's not a software problem, but I'm no expert, let's hope someone comes up with a solution!
I do have the same problem.. Someone told me MS2 users are used to that kind of Problem and it is a hardware bug that happens a lot. You need to get the device repaired to have the camera working again..
(Sorry for bad english)

Seems pretty much like a hw problem.

When taking pictures in low light situations with flash (it seems low battery enhances the probability) sometimes the pictures get artifacts (white lines close to the top/bottom of the picture).
And sometimes the phone gets stuck and reboots. The camera tends to make clicking noises right before it reboots that are louder than when usually focusing.
Look at the screenshot and at the end you can see the reboot. You can see a sudden battery level drop after the reboot.
I don't know if this is hardware or software related but a user suggested this to be a problem with the stock camera app.
I had this problem on two devices already and it seems to be on all devices, maybe just rarer for some people? Not sure.
If you have this problem vote for the following issue and hope google fixes it:

I had something similar happen to me once last week. I was viewing my photos in the stratosphere mode and would hit the back button. I had to repeatedly do this to scroll to the next images after viewing them. When hitting the back button it would take me back to take a picture, but one time, it took me to a blank screen with the camera buttons still working. I ended up needing to restart my phone. Not sure what happened there.
I have only seen this once. It didn't occur again, so I haven't chased it down
Ditto only happened once in the first week of using and has never happened again

AW: Reboot while in camera
Kinda sucks when it happens randomly, today it happened twice to me and that in 4.2.2!
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I also have it, but less frequent, about one or two times per month. It happened on 4.2.1 and no one could solve it in my thread about this .
Facing the same issue more frequently

While taking pictures my phone suddenly got stuck and rebooted. This is the second time now. My camera makes strange click noises sonetimes wheb focusing but that seems to be normal.
The device was a little hot but not as hot as when in gaming and in gaming it never reboots.
Look at the screen shot and at the end you can see the reboot. What I'm worried about is the sudden battery level drop after the reboot.
Are these reboots hardware or software related? Should I get a replacement?

I seem to have the same issue. So far, it has only occurred when I am trying to take a photo with the flash on. One more observation: seems to happen more often if the battery is low. However, both of us might be having defective devices, as it doesn't seem to be a common issue looking the forums here.
No solution found so far. Tried a factory reset. Tried using another camera app. Nothing helped. Might try flashing a custom ROM.

All oft the things you described apply to my situation too. Also I noticed that pictures tend to have artifacts (white stripes close to the top/bottom). They always have the same distance from top/bottom but their length differs.
Also after the forced reboot there sometimes appears an extra picture in the gallery that is fully grey.

I don't seem to have the artifact problem that you described. Also there is a creaking sound sometimes just before it restarts.
Have you tried flashing a custom ROM? Did it help? Otherwise RMA is possibly the way to go.
I ordered the phone from US using a mail forwarding service, so an rma will cost me another $100 or so. If you or anyone else can confirm that it is definitely a hardware issue which can be resolved by getting a replacement, i might go for it.

I was on AOKP PUB Krait 05/02 by Stevespear and Harsh Kernel and I did have a reboot there once too. Also this is already my third Nexus 4 since I had to replace it 2 times due to issues (bottom side creaking 1st device / yellow blotches 2nd device) and this one really looks good only this camera reboot issue is left.
But my first phone did have the issue too, I didn't have the 2nd phone long enough so didn't see it happen there. I have no idea if it is a hardware or software issue but my bet is that all Nexus 4's have that issue.
It just seems that it appears rather rarely and most people don't notice it. Or it could be that the voltage is too low and that would explain why it happens on some phones more than on others since not all chips are equal. I was wondering if somehow setting the flash to be weaker so it draws less power would solve this. But I am just a user and don't really have an idea.
PS: I won't get my phone replaced since I can live with this issue (it happens rather rarely) and I went through 2 replacements to get this device which is close to perfect but I wouldn't mind if someone came up with a solution.
That makes me feel really lucky to have gotten a nearly perfect device. Anyway, guess we just have to live with it then. Lowering the flash intensity sounds like a good idea. Will check if some rom/kernel/app can do it for me.

Having the same problem here on 4.2.1 and 4.2.2. I think it might be the buggy stock camera/gallery app because I can't replicate the problem on the Camera Zoom FX app.
Edit: I remember having this problem on 4.2.1 and then clearing the gallery app data and not ever seeing the issue happen again. I will try the same on 4.2.2 and see if it fixes it too.
I added a link to the issue on OP guess that is all I can do.

I have had this issue with the Camera FX Zoom app also. So, at least in my case, I guess it's a hardware/camera driver issue. Anyway, I also cleared the gallery app data a few days back and haven't faced this issue since then, but haven't taken enough pics with flash to confirm that the issue is truly gone.

Has the issue disappeared after clearing the app data for you? I certainly have not faced any reboots since doing it.
After I purchased the Nexus 7, I upgrade the system to 4.2.1 as it prompted.
Now I find the camera is not working.
I tried:
1. Skype video call
2. Camera Launcher for Nexus 7
3. other camera apps
The camera is always a black screen, without anything.
I am not sure whether it is caused by the upgrading, because I upgraded it as soon as I got it. Maybe it is the defect of my device. Anyone please give me a hand by telling whether your android 4.2.1 is okay with camera? Thanks!
Mine is fine.

Mine does work on stock android 4.2.1. So you will have to reset your nexus and the only way i know to do that is to use nexus 7 toolkit. But try and see if theres another way to factory reset first

I have the same issue after 4.2.1. I have subsequently carried out a factory restore and still no joy. I've also tried several camera launchers. No joy.

I'm sending it back to ASUS.

I replaced the camera successfully following the "Installing Nexus 7 Front Facing Camera" guide from ifixit(dot)com. In case anyone has the same problem and is out of warranty, the procedure is very quick and easy, the camera module can be found cheap on ebay.
My I9500 running latest firmware and having this problem, whenever I open camera (either stock app or 3rd party app) it either start up normally about 2 seconds or much slower than normal (5 seconds or more) or completely reboot the device.
Anyone experiencing the same? I don't know whether this is software or hardware issue?

I have same problem , my s4 get freeze for few sec and reboot......
I have restored back to MDE firmware using odin and camera still get hanged/rebooted. I'm clueless now as this problem cannot always be reproduced hence I'm really afraid if they would agree to replace my phone... And this issue seems to be on many other people S4, it's just that they haven't encountered it yet.
Has happened to me in a couple of occasions as well!!

Same here! It tends to happen when I use one of the animated gif modes or the Drama shot. But its irritating. Cuz I was kinda showing off my phone to an iPhoner friend when it happened for the first time. And I was like, WTF! It had to happen just now??
Mine just happen without reasons, several times a day and it tend to happen when I want to use it most lol, and when I want to replicate it in order to make a video about the issue the damn phone just keep working fine!!! Really hope any expert can have an insight about this

My sd card is a class 10 32gb with barely 300 photos, but I even tried saving to internal storage, same issue. I try turn off location when taking picture, same. Try revert back to factory firmware which is MDE, same.
This issue won't happen very often but the fact that it has appeared many times when I going out and want to take a picture piss me off greatly, what is the point of a phone camera if it cannot capture the moment that I want?
My old phone (not a samsung but it does not really matter) had this reaction when reaching a bad sector on memory. Before getting sad ideas try a reset. Then if it persists head over to the customer care.
hope samsung will look seriously about this issue!!!i didnt pay premium price for this problem!
Same here tried 3 difrend firmwares
No issue on I9505 here.

The camera firmware should be independent form the ROM firmware.
Therefore reverting to previous ROM firmware doesn't restore also previous camera firmware.
AFAIK this was the common experience with Galaxy S2 (that I had too), so it's should be the same with S4: it's not possible for the final user to separately flash a specific camera firmware.
Maybe a future ROM upgrade (which could include a new camera firmware) will solve the problems.
No problems here. Can you reproduce the problem?
Sent from my GT-I9500 using xda premium
I cannot reproduce the issue every time I open the camera, but I would say if I let the phone idle for a while then open the camera then very highly it can hang and reboot, but of course this is not the only case.
But almost everyone can see that S4 camera take too long to start up, and then 1 to 2 seconds to take first focus which is very annoying and you can miss the moment, other phones are not this slow. I really hope this is firmware issue and Samsung can fix it soon, because if it is hardware related then well...

Hi guys, just jumped to android from ios and im having some issues (camera has black screen and freezes with camera failed), front facing camera works). Basically ive seen a lot of fixes for the rear facing camera on the S4, clearing the cache etc. None of them work, i was planning on rooting the phone as well, ive seen a few posts saying this sometimes fixes the issue with a new rom and kernel.
Does anyone have experience of this working and can recommend a custom rom for me? Just before i start ordering parts for it.
Thanks in advance!
What firmware are you on?
Sounds like the flex cable for the camera is not seated correctly. Depending on your firmware, you will not be able to flash any new roms for awhile. I suggest warranty replacement if you are on MF3. If you are on MDL, read up on rooting and ROMs. There is vital info you need to know. A new ROM might fix it if it isn't a flex cable issue.
