What kind of stuff do you do with the nexus 7 v2 - Nexus 7 (2013) General

I remember seeing a similar thread in the Nexus 7 2012 section. Cant seem to find it so hope its ok to start another topic on this subject. Aside from the regular stuff (Web,Movies, music, reading, etc) what else do you use it for? Any interesting exploits or cool stuff that might not seem obvious to most?

Nothing super cool I guess but I use mine to control my home automation(lights, doors, HVAC) using tasker shortcuts on my homescreens. I also control my htpc using unified remote, yatse for xbmc, and Onkyo remote.

I haven't yet gotten into it on my 2013 model but, on my 2012, I used a PS3 controller to play emulated NES and PS1 games. I'm planning on getting a Slimport adapter so I can bring it to friend's houses and play with them on their TVs. Aside from that, it's handy for controlling my Linux media PC via VLC Remote and it also works for controlling YouTube on my PS3. Pick a video and tell it to play on the PS3. It's handy because it makes searching for videos a lot faster.

I Have an Ouya for emulators....
...but on this years nexus 7 2, I use it pretty much for music and web everywhere i go, ( subsonic, tethered to my Nexus 4 LTE on tmobile), netflix, Zenbound 2 ( the game), control xbmc if i can't find my mouse, remote desktop, Download random torrents, type notes for school,(with BT keyboard) skype, hangouts and tabletalk when my phone is charging, and watch TimeScapes in 1080P to show off the screen to my friends

Everything the Nexus 7 had. Mainly after the Ubuntu support

Media consumption. Small FB games that have an app such as Candy Crush.

I thought I bought it to use for work and play, but it turns out that I have primarily been using it to debug GPS functionality and reverse engineer the touchscreen firmware update process. I now know how to root my tablet, compile the entire aosp system including the kernel and flash it to the tablet. I guess I actually got it to become an android developer.

1080p pr0n is rare... I use mine for podcasts and movies,I also play games (riptide gp2) I love this tablet so much, and it has proven to be the best tablet I have ever used.
sent through space time.

This is my first tablet (I know I am very late to the party). I am still getting to how I want to use it and where it is a better option then my phone or laptop.
So far my main uses have been (in order of importance to me)
Digital notpad (with google keep) - goodbye paper! I have to take notes all day to keep track of what I am doing, been looking to get rid of paper for this for a long time but the phone was too small, and I dont want to carry a laptop around. This is perfect!
Youtube/TV on demand - A lot easier on this then laptop, nicer to the eyes then the phone
Facebook/Email/XDA/internet - again nicer on a bigger screen then phone and more comfortable then using a laptop.
I have tried a bit of gaming on it and do like it for this purpose, but I have a lot more to try. Oddly a lot of game I have seem to be very much aimed at phone size so are a bit unwieldy on a tab.
Real test as a media device will come when I next travel and load it up with TV and movies (this was one of my main motivations for buying one).
I am also yet to try it for writing and editing office documents, I think I want a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse before I start up on this though.
One thing I probably wont do with it is use it as a GPS. I use Strava and Mytracks on my phone all the time when cycling. I also use tracknavigator to give me turn-by-turn directions on my routes. I can get the tab in a jersey pocket (I have been when commuting without my backpack) but its too large to use as a sports device really. That said I want to get it working with the ANT+ sensors on my race bike and see if it can be a good indoor training tool when I'm in the house on the turbo trainer over winter.

This is the first tablet I've ever owned. So far I use it for media consumption and Web browsing. I have a few games on it also

This is my third tablet, all Asus. I am only using mine for fantasy football right now and any other app that can free up my phone's app drawer.
D

My first tablet too. Had it for around 4 days. Use it for:
Movies
TV Shows
Youtube
Browsing
Notepad
Video Calling
Controlling my NAS server
Remote for laptop
Some games
Some document editing
Emails
So pretty much everything I did on my phone. So much easier to do on a bigger screen, and the resolution is brilliant for movies. Also helps my phone battery last a little longer since I am not using it that much.

surf the web/forums, and stream radio tune in pro app mostly, and download chitload of apps

It's an excellent book reader device, in some cases it may be better than eink i have around 20+ hours of screen time while reading, fine enough for me.

Everything online media (its useless without data connection) & of course my easily accesible porn bank n_n

How does remote control on this tablet works? Any special apps needed?

Tool or toy?

I'm just a little curious wheat everyone is using their Iconia for?
Is it strictly business? All about the games? Are you a social media star? Or is it a little bit of everything?
And what are your must-have apps?
For me, I've found it's a very usefull tool. I'm a chef, and to be able to have all my food costs, invoices, budgets and recipes at my fingertips is invaluable. I'm liking Polaris for this, it's a way better layout than Docs to Go, and it's way more powerful. It's really helped me out at work!
As far as games, I'm mostly playing galaxy on fire 2. Really takes full advantage of the accelerometer, and I've always liked flying games. It's not really what I had in mind for a flying game, but I'm keeping my eyes peeled for something more realistic (anyone working on a flight sim???)
Other than that, I watch youtube, and the occasional movie on here. I'm using TubeMate to grab videos off youtube, and Drive Mount keeps my movie selection fresh between the tablet and my external hard drive. There's an app I found here called Mizuu Movies that has a really slick interface that displays your movies using the DVD covers. Way more eye friendly than a file browser.
Ummm..... I also have the Ultimate Guitar app and mobile metronome for when I'm strumming my guitar, plus the usual tools like quickboot and titanium backup. Oh... And McAfee is my security suite of choice. I like having site advisor on my tab!

I find myself using it mostly for browsing, movies and reading. None of the available games really appeal to me, I like my games with rich storyline and well, no one seems to bother with such on devices like these..
mostly media, basic web browsing and such(big loud gaming rig can be off for paying bills), I also use it to remote into my HTPC to run conversion and update things and get some movies downloaded
i use mine for uni mainly. Its great in lectures and far more convenient than a laptop to lug around campus all day.
i use it for games here and there but not so much
I use for casual browsing and media but mainly for my Med school studies. I can easily throw this and a book under my arm and get to a coffee house or library and not worry about finding an outlet. My laptop is getting dusty.
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk
I use mine for communicating away from my office, reading, jotting down short (but important) notes and as an awesome alarm clock
When I step away from computers for lunch or just to hang out and watch tv, I'll turn on IRC/eBuddy and I'll still be available. Having a collection of books and Magazines is nice for lounging in bed or out back etc... and the bonus to all that, I can carry it easily to a friends and hop on their WiFi.
From time to time I'll use it for reference - like say, I'm playing a game on the desktop (even thought I also have a laptop beside me) I'll often kick up the tablet and have walk-throughs or other assorted helpful information on it.
I store ALL my art and pictures on it and a large chunk of (about 6gb) of music. So I have a concise portfolio of my work available anytime and music to play even if I have no connection.
I don't game on it. Except a little Solitaire.
I use mine in sales to bring up and show customers products via PDF files and PPT presentations (Polaris or OpenOffice... haven't settled on either yet). I do use EZPDF for bookmarked PDF files as I find it much better (although it doesn't do landscape scrolling or else I haven't figured out how...).
Browsing and some lookup during the day while using the WifI hotspot on my phone. News360 is nice.
Used to carry a netbook but now carry the A500 + portfolio and leave my HP Laptop in the bag. If you put it in sleep mode it turns on really fast to show a customer stuff.
Also, use it for pricing lookups via Dropbox.
One game I use is Pinball.
The two Iconias in our house are used mainly for keeping up with newsfeeds, web browsing, and watching video. That might make them sound like toys, but the benefit is that my partner \and I spend far less time in front of our computers- the tablets (along with the Android phones that came before them) are freeing us from our desks.
It's more of a toy to me than anything, although.. It is used as an e-book reader as well.. I mean, books aren't toys right? =P
Mind's about equally tool & toy. I e-read, browse the web, remote desktop into work, email, Netflix, and PhotoShop (lite).
It started out as a toy, mainly to function as media player, net surfing and light gaming but its evolved into more.
Not only has it replaced my notebook for most light work and play but its also replaced books and magazines. Its a tool for me in the kitchen when I feel adventurous. I use it at my bedside, paired with bt speakers for soothing music to lull me to sleep. Apart from all this, its also managed to put everything at my fingertips more comfortably vs. my smartphone (in terms of a bigger screen). I can get by without it but at this point, its as much a daily tool as my smartphone and I would rather not.
Toy or tool? Both I'd say.

X-plane (one of the best light simulators out there) works great on my A500. Although, I must admit that the flight Sim experience is that it reduced on a tab compared to a full computer. Perhaps is better as a companion device?

My children love the iconia for playing angry birds, talking tom and other games. I use it for work, too but only reading, sometimes answering emails. Most of the time its fun, but i don't want to live whithout my new toy.
My lovely Thinkpad isn't happy because it is used fairly about 40% of its former usage

Funny you'd mention X-plane! I found it yesterday. Played a bit, and I'd agree, it's not quite the same as PC, though still a cool novelty. And I see two companion apps to fsx in the market, if that's what you mean! Cool
Tool and toy. I do some word processing, movies, and games. I try not to use it for work but I cant resist becasue its more effecient then my netbook.

I think I would have to answer this as Toy if I wanted to answer honestly. As much as I would like to think otherwise mine is 99% a leisure machine.
I take mine to work daily, but purely for reading ebooks at lunch or keeping in touch with my social world via facebook. At home it is my armchair companion. Once again reading ebooks, surfing the net, playing a few games (words with friends / Shanghai / pool), and a mobile facebook interface. I also watch movies/TV shows on it.

Using which App(s) ?
Mine gets used for pretty much everything, web browsing, films/tv, music, games, I've even done some java and python programming on it.
I use mine for email and bedroom internet surfing when at home.
When away, I use Google Wallet and games.
Google News/RSS reading via "Reader HD" app (Awesome!!)
Browsing
IMDB app lots while watching TV/movies
Kindle app reading books
A bit of Gmail, though I also do that on my BlackBerry
That's about it I think
EDIT as for location, I use it at home on my couch, bed, patio, etc. Also use it at my mom's place when I'm over visiting. That's about it.
I mainly use it to kill time on the tube/trains. Read books, listen to music, study my notes and play games. When I have a connection, I also use it to check emails, bus timetables etc.
I use it for internet browsing on the couch, watching youtube vids, playing games here and there, bringing to a friends house to play music from, using as an e-book when on lunch at work, setting alarms at work, etc.
Books music fun toy games and of course...
Flash & develop

At the moment ? Photobucketplunder on Reddit
80% - Stream movies from my networked hard drive - BSPlayer
15% - Browse
4% - Check e-mails
1% - Other stuff
My most common daily use is for reading news. Specifically the Currents app (love it), Reader HD, Reddit and Pocket. That, plus a bit of social network and gaming and it pretty much consumes me. As for productivity, I have a Personal and Work homescreen that each has corresponding Gmail and Tasks widgets. Love this device.
Flipboard (no need for browers, look very nice)
Tunein
Movie
Game
Book
Use most in order from top.
Believe it or not...work. I do some IT consulting on the side and I needed something to allow me to work in an emergency but was small enough to carry with me anywhere and everywhere. I own a full license for Teamviewer which works well on Android. I also have email addresses at 4 client locations so this is my "central hub" for work and personal mail. I love that I can VPN into the sites, access file shares, remote into servers and workstations, etc. (Just made a hell of a lot more sense than an iPad) I also do my accounting on it and can print my invoices right on site as I have the printers setup with Google cloud print and with PrinterShare it's no problem to send my PDF invoices right to the printers.
Oh, and the other usual crap...Netflix, web browsing, and browsing several forums with Tapatalk. Before I forget, I also manage my stocks with Ameritrade.
There's more, but that's the gist of it.

Using it for music via bluetooth, taking notes at work meetings, video chat with my girl when I am traveling, access work cpu via Splashtop to write up orders, etc.

I mostly use mine passively for media consumption, web browsing & casual gaming. However the split screen pane in gmail when using a Nexus 7 means it's pretty good for emails too.

What do you use it for?

I'm thinking of purchasing a 32Gb Nexus 7 primarily to backup a lot of my photos and as a viewer for them. Obviously I'd be using it for other things such as web, email, maybe a few games etc.
What do you use yours for? Does anyone else use the device as a backup for photos and maybe some music as well?

I have a lot of books on mine, technical and novels. I browse the web, a little youtube, and I have a lot of magazine subscriptions.
I have a really long commute so I put my N7 in a windshield mount to listen to podcasts. I watch netflix on it, read my motorcycle magazine, look at internets, text, and use the dock so I can use the N7 as a GPS in the work truck.

Taking notes at work. My boss is a micro manager so I can take detailed notes with my stylus, 7Notes + Evernote and share that folder with him. He can see what I'm doing without the face time and I can get more real work done.
Watching recorded TV shows: I have a MythTV box which record shows to watch whenever I want. With using Handbrake I can schedule the transcoding of the MP4 files MythTV creates for me. Then copy them to my Nexus 7.
Playing games, right now addicted to SurvivorCraft.
News, Forum and Twitter reader: The Nexus 7 actually is a more comfortable platform to do casual reading than a desktop pc. I love the form factor, it's light weight so easy to hold when on the couch or in bed.
Music: Pandora and my MP3s. Only keep the top 20 albums I have on it though, not all my music.
I haven't gotten into using it for photos yet, as the camera on it isn't that good. I'm an amateur photographer, have a NIkon D40 + lenses and stuff. I prefer to view my pictures from an online source, or on my Myth box which is in the living room.
If you want to use it as a media backup device I would recommend a OTG USB cable and external hard drive with it's own power source. I think I read in another thread the Nexus7 doesn't have enough power for a hard drive via USB.

[Q] Nexus 7 as Laptop replacement?

Hey guys, I wanted to get your guys' opinions since i havent gotten a chance to get my hands on a nexus 7 yet. I am a Graduate Assisstant at my college and i graduate in december. With my GA position i was given a laptop to use, well I was wondering what you guys think about using a Nexus 7 as a replacement for a laptop when i graduate since i have to return my laptop. I do have a desktop that runs linux, so for any real computing power i can use that, but for laying in bed, browsing the web, email, watchign youtube, hulu, and other streaming sites as well as visiting lots of forums, do you think the nexus 7 is suitable as a daily device for that? thanks

Agreed for those, but no tablet is a replacement for a laptop.

I'll eventually get a laptop but right now just dont have the money to get one that would be suitable or what i would want spec wise. So i figure with the low cost of the nexus i would use that in the meantime
I am a grad student and school teacher. I bought a tab to replace my laptop because I didn't need everything the laptop could do. My wife has a desktop, so I use that for doing any heavy tasks. I use my n7 with a bluetooth keyboard when in grad class and as a notebook for recording nots and ideas when working g with students.
I originally had a 10 inch tab, but that was too big. Love the n7,and I do not feel like a need a laptop.

For what you said you'd use the tablet for I'd say yes but get the 32gb version cause you never know when you'd need the extra space
I bought my n7 to compliment my atom netbook for my university course. One Bluetooth keyboard and an otg cable and I haven't even turned my netbook on in over 3 months. Office apps are good enough for editing and some changes to PowerPoint presentations etc.
Half of the time now I don't even take a bag to Uni, my n7 in my pocket and I am good.
I have 3 computers at home (wife and kids use them) I find most of my browsing, YouTube etc. Is being done on the n7. My comps I use only for mmo gaming and large projects.

Tablet is nice but it will never replace a PC/laptop for me. If I'm home alone, I am still always on my desktop. I'd rather sit at my desk with a sound system to listen to Pandora than being alone on the couch with ear buds. There are still many times I need to use my PC because a page won't display correctly or is difficult to use.
While I love my N7, it's still for casual use. It will never replace a PC for me unless I have no choice.
For sitting on the couch or in bed, a tablet will probably be good enough you.

I've got a Nexus 7 to replace my Asus EEPC 701 as my travel partner .
My major task for my travel partner is look for a map , get some simple translation , upload picture from my DSLR to my facebook account .
And now , all these task are completed by my N7 . And it is always on , the battery even can survive a single of heavy usage !
But of course , I would still keep my EEEPC , since it is still a standard IBM PC , there are still lots of works that require a standard computer to complete . For example , briefing with VGA out , connect some uncommon hardware (e.g. 3G usb modem , printer with no network) .
one last thing i do alot also is use torrents, is that something that can be easily done on the N7. I saw utorrent just released a beta for android, so i assume that this is a task easily done now on the N7. Thanks guys i think i am going to go with the N7 as my go to mobile device. For only $250 you cant really beat it.
On another note, is anyone using the tablet UI, and if so what do you like better by chance?
Nutshell version:
In most situations laptops are orverkill. Web browsing, torrenting, music, gaming can all be done BETTER on the N7. You don't NEED a laptop for this. CREATING a lot of content then you'll NEED a laptop. The N7 can handle SOME of this but when you get into doing a lot of it it's clunky and you'll run into limitations.
TL-DR version:
An N7 is NOT a laptop replacement. If you're looking to replace an entire laptop, just buy a laptop. HOWEVER... if you realize you don't NEED a laptop.. the N7 is perfect.
Here's a little illustration to help:
I personaly have come to realize that I don't NEED a laptop. I have one.. but it never leaves my house. When I go out, I take my N7 instead. My needs on the go are different than my needs at home. I realize what I need (I say "need"... but who really "needs" luxury devices like laptops and tablets though) is a beefy and powerful desktop at home and some periphery computing accessories like a chromebook and a good tablet. If i want to do graphics, music or gaming.. I do it at home on the desktop. If i'm on the go, i'm not trying to do graphic editing or create music... i'm consuming content or gaming.. the Nexus is perfect for this. If i'm trying to create content on the go... it's not going to be heavy duty stuff.. it's most likely going to be document editing or coding.. the chromebook will do nicely.
I hope that illustration helps. Thats a real world use for the N7 as opposed to something unrealistic like trying to do all of your college work (i'm also in school.. the N7 can handle some things like documents, but it's DEFINITELY better to use a full computer/laptop) you're going to run into limitations you'll be forced to work around.

Honestly if I had a hard keyboard for my nexus 7, I wouldn't really ever use my laptop. Jellybean is a pretty good operating system getting better everyday, serves as a pretty good windows replacement
It comes down to a decision about content consumption vs. content creation and which & when you do more of. Because of variability in what people do and how much they travel around, I don't think there is a one-size-fits-all answer. The need to use a single PC application that can't be substituted for with a tablet app can easily force the decision.
Three years ago I was down to two computers - a laptop and an android phone. When the laptop finally died, I switched to a deskside, even though I knew I would sorely miss it for one kind of multitasking: watching TV and web surfing simultaneously.
Why? Screen real estate! You simply can not be as productive (say as a programmer) when you need to refer to several things simultaneously (docs, code, deguggers, etc) on a single 15-17" diagonal screen. Multiple monitors are a game-changer when it comes to productivity. (Sure, you can use stacks of windows or multiple virtual desktops on a laptop, but switching back and forth between them is lost time).
Along the same vein, appreciate that Android style multitasking - a single activity on the whole screen - makes cut-n-paste operations or quick referral to info in a 2nd app clumsily slow. A tablet (Android or Apple) isn't productive for work that needs frequent use of that type of activity.
Same goes for using a finger for text entry - pathetically slow. If you must capture notes of any length ("content creation") on the tablet, use a physical keyboard.
Still, I missed surfing from the couch, and a 3-in android phone screen wasn't cutting it. Tried Google TV for a while, but sharing the same display just seems unnatural and is an irritation to a 2nd person watching the same TV screen.
So, now I still don't have a laptop - just the big iron for being productive (read: not in front of the TV!), and an entertainment/reading device that can be used anywhere - couch/bed/crapper.
In a way, that's good as it helps enforce a decent separation between work and play.
At this point, I miss the laptop only for situations that require both a full-up OS and portability. I don't need that for work; but if I did I probably would have all three.
If it came down to a matter of money, and I could only afford one, it would probably be the laptop that got the nod.

How did you use your note today?

Woot woot!
I used ConnectBot to do some work on a supercomputer, then watched porn while my code was running. Not the entire time, of course.
Net surfing, music, video. Sometime - games.
lets do last sunday as a good example. control tv and Comcast (smart remote, LG TV remote, Xfinity TV remote) , read newspapers (press reader), GPS navigaton (Sygic), email, calendar (Splanner), beam video and audio to tv (netgear push to tv 3000 adapter, this does both widi and allshare, very cool), journals (Zinio), books (Kindle), comics, (comic reader), surf (internet or dolphin), cooking timer for stuff on grill (kitchen timer), night alarm clock (clock ics), weather channel.
During the week add note taking at meetings, rpn calculator if needed, weather channel, edit pdf documents (ezPDF or RepliGo Reder, or Adobe reader or Quickoffice HD).
In addition depending on interest star gazing (the night sky, goolge sky, star chart, skeye, sky orb).
Do I like this tablet, I would say yes t that .

I agree so far on the root. I have rooted my phone (HTC HD2) and HP touch pad (now gathering dust) and do not see a need to root so far. Wish the update to 4.2.2 or 5.0 would come in soon.

Yeah I would also like to receive 4.2/4.3 update. Mainly because of Multi-User (if Samsung includes it). I have rooted because So far My note 10.1 4.1.2 with a MultiWindow hack had enabled me to write movie scripts and to draw storyboards (with apps I use), while surfing Youtube/Internet for ideas. Pretty neat feature. :good:
I use it every morning, while having breakfast, to check the front page of the daily newspapers and check some feeds with Feedly.
I also use it daily to watch tv while having lunch/dinner and also browsing, playing some games.
Used it to read The Walking Dead comic
I am using it as a portable second monitor with AirDisplay
To play asphalt 8!
The game is damn smooth even on local wifi with multiplayers. My son used the transformer prime and he beat me as well.
I will use my tablet with bluetooth mouse and keyboard from next week as I am on a business trip and I can't carry a laptop weight with me.

Read some comics, played Asphalt 8, streamed some Young Justice from my Plex server.
I always use it as my cellphone because I'm weird that way. I will probably draw on it using Sketchbook Mobile Pro during my lunch break later.
To look at funny pics (loldroid app) while running backups on an Exchange server.
To take notes at a customer site and pics of receipts that print funky.
To browse the intertubes.
