Nexus 4 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
Been wanting to root and maybe even flash a rom to my Nexus 4. But I've hesitant because my nexus 4 service is provided by any of the popular carriers(Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile) but the carrier is exclusive to the 4 surrounding states I'm from(Arizona, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico)
So my question is can my phone be rooted? Since it's provided by any of the above carriers

Yep. It has nothing to do with who you have service with.

Okay, thanks I was worried that it might mess up the phone if I tried to root.
So I guess everything is built around [Build Number] or Android version

Wrong service provider

I am using simple mobile prepaid service. I am coming from nexus one to nexus s. My provider on nexus s reads T-Mobile. I don't know why. I never had this happened with nexus one. Please advise. Thanks
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Simple Mobile is an MNVO of T-mobile (Simple Mobile sells service on T-mobile's network and rebrands it as Simple Mobile... That could be why your Nexus S is displaying T-mobile as your service provider. I hope this helps you.

Yes I understand all that about simple mobile but I never had a problem with the nexus 1 before. It was always showing simple mobile is my carrier. Thanks

may just be that the network has no idea what device it is or how to handle it?
either way, does it really bug you for it to say tmobile?
No it sure doesn't bug at all. But I was just wondering. Thanks

Empty space between WiFi & Cell Indicator

In case anyone else is wondering, there's an empty space between the WiFi indicator and Reception Indicator. Your eyes aren't playing tricks.
if I had to guess, it's the space to indicate LTE/H+/other icons related to the cell. It's an odd design.
This has been on moto devices since at least the RAZR m. Personally I hate it. Never seen that gap on any other phone except a Motorola.

Totally agree. The Verizon version probably won't have that, at least. In thinking about switching back to vzw from at&t. For other reasons.

Really? All you had to was wait for root and flash a rom that removes all the att mods.
Not as simple as waiting for root. As the at and t bootloader is locked

Yeah I know. He's even on reddit throwing his "expert" opinion out there and concludes the HTC One is still better, so this doesn't really come at a surprise that he returned it. Just stop posting here if you have nothing good to say. I know Att sucks, but the phone itself is great.
I honestly can't remember the last phone I had that didn't have the carrier at the top....is this a common thing? I thought all phones had carrier names at the top by the signal bars to let you know whose towers you're on?
The space is there to show emergency call only if you don't have sim in.

I hate the gap. That's a Moto thing tho. On the One, both the ATT logo fade away when you have notifications (which is a nice medium) and the LTE icon remains present even when on WiFi.

Definitely didn't call myself an expert. I may get the Dev or Google play version but hoping for a ROM with a tight locked boot loader is a no go.

The versions from at&t all will from the sgs3 on, but something like a nexus or international model won't.

Oddly screenshots of the Verizon Moto X doesn't appear to have the gap as it has its normal 4G LTE icon where our gap is. Hopefully they'll patch it!

I was, but given the resent news of a Nexus 5 with Sprint LTE support I'm holding off until it gets announced. If it won't come out to Sprint the Moto X will be my next.

I will be getting one soon in white when its available for SWAC purchase. Having an available upgrade is nearly killing me but I doubt I will have to wait much longer. I'm not sure what you guys are reading about another Nexus on Sprint but I wouldn't hold my breath.
I'm still thinking about it. I'll probably time it so that I'm eligible to trade it in for a Note 3 within the 14-day grace period just in case I don't like it.
Good to see a familiar name

I should get one soon hopefully. My broken screen EVO 3D finally gave up the other day, no phone ATM:crying:. Stopped by one of the local Sprint stores, they didn't have any in stock and would let me know when they'll be getting them in the store. Right now it seems they're only available online, not sure for how long though. Need to get my account balance payed down before i can upgrade though...
Just some quick thoughts since i just got mine, all bloatware except sprint zone seems removable. Also unless it times out on me it looks like Google wallet may work. It came preloaded anyway

Would you mind grabbing a system dump for me please? Connect phone to computer with usb debugging enabled and run the following command (open a command prompt in the directory where you have adb, tell me if you don't have it and I'll link you to a quick download for it)
Code:
adb pull /system system
Then wait for that to complete and zip up + upload the folder it makes and drop a link for me...
Thanks!

Were you able to get wallet up and going? If you did then the rest of us may be able to bring it over the vzw and att. If we are able to change lines in our build prop to make it think its a sprint then install and set up wallet then revert back like we did with the s3. Might be some hope as long as the secure element is hidden somewhere.

Nexus 4 as a t-mobile tablet?

With the Nexus 5 out (hopefully) soon, Ill have a retired and unused Nexus 4. With the news of the T-Mobile free 200mb for tablets , it got me thinking.
Is it possible to trick t-mobile into thinking the nexus 4 is a tablet? Would this take a custom ROM? (I assume if possible, it would)
Or, is it just a matter of getting a data-only sim and signing it up for the tablet coverage?

I know that works to download "incompatible" apps from the play store.. Could anyone confirm this would work? I actually think T-Mobile confirms it by the device's imei identification code which contains information about the device model, if so tricking T-Mobile would be practically impossible unless we changed it to a nexus 7 one which I've heard doing so is illegal for some dumb reason
Won't work. The IMEI is hard coded into the firmware and changing it is illegal. When you activate the phone on T-Mobile to begin with you give them the imei and seriel number and they put it in their database and know what it is, therefore I'm thinking 0.000001% chance of it working
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
I called and acted dumb. I thought it was a nexus 7, the guy said that the imei that I gave him was for a phone. I wish I just had the imei number of a nexus7 LTE, so I could try giving them that

The legality is gray, since the law clearly mentions stolen phones, and this /should/ be your phone. That's why I consider it okay to change the imei of YOUR phone.
This can be taken back to the jailbreak issue (iPhone crowd). I find it very hard to believe that someone can charge you for anything you do with your phone, on your carrier account.
Look at the people that bypass the network throttling

I'm rather peeved about this delay also. We paid for the MOST EXPENSIVE version of the tablet, and we get treated like stepchildren.
I bet Verizon is behind this with their 800 lb gorilla "fart and the world thanks you" attitude about approving updates and devices. The negative of a single-SKU device. Waiting on some monkey in a Verizon office to decide the update is kosher.

Given that the Nexus 4 is also delayed, it likely has something to do with cellular radio firmware, rather than anything involving Verizon. Just a guess, though.

Now would be a good time to rollback to stock recovery/kernel so that the OTA installs smoothly..
i just rooted on saturday and am still on the latest 4.3, any idea if OTA is a bad idea?
I was so confused because Phandroid.com states that "It’s worth noting that Google specifically mentions “Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 versions with mobile data,” so if you’ve got a WiFi only device or don’t currently have service, you probably won’t be seeing an update in the immediate future." So I'm assuming they are wrong... (not unusual).
