Blue Screen of death upon connecting NST w Computer!! - Nook Touch General

Every time I connect my Rooted Nook Simple Touch to my laptop to transfer books, I get the blue screen. I then shut down the computer and restart it. When I re connect the Nook, everything works just fine. However, I do get the pop up that says whether I want to scan and fix the memory card in Nook.
Does anyone know whats wrong here? I am now afraid to connect my Nook to my computer fearing that it may crash it.

Almost the same thing happened to me once, perhaps the issue is with your micro sd card.
I would suggest you try to backup and format your micro sd, might be corrupt or something. Worth a shot.

How Do I format it? Will I lost my root if i format the sd card?

You connect your micro sd to your computer from an adapter (NOT YOUR NOOK) and you format with a program like sdformatter or the default windows formatter.
You WILL lose all data from your micro sd, but not the root. Therefore try backing it up first and recopying the things you really need.

SD card format auto-eject?

I have a plain "vanilla" version of cupcake and i would like to get rosie, but i have to root my G1. The only problem is when i try to format my SD card, it automatically dismounts, or ejects it from my computer, then i mount it and try it again... and the process continues, so i came here. Anyone had this problem and/or know how to fix it?
yeah thats happening to mine right now too
but my sd card is mucked up i think
Do you have a sdcard reader and an adapter for your micro sd
if so you can plug it in and do the same process plus its more safer to do it that way
no, sadly, I do not have an SD card reader. But I am about to buy an 8GB SDHC card with a reader, so I should be able to root soon .
I know this is an old thread but I'm trying to go through the formatting process and am getting the same issue; the card automatically dismounts when I right click and select Format. I'm trying to downgrade and I found the DREAIMG.nbh file to use but when I try to run it without formatting, it's unsuccessful. Any ideas of what I could try?

Windows 7 has a repair disk option that worked for me when I damaged my SD card during rooting.

there's no point if i just formatted the disk, all my files inside will be gone.
i want those data to be kept.

ok, will get to it when i back home, now at office which uses vista.
Just reboot the phone, it always work for me.
Unmount the sd card from settings, turn off your phone, take out the battery and sd card then put them all back, turn on. It works for me
Alternatively you can try a media card reader and copy all the data off it. It may or may not work depending how damaged it is. If it is damaged that is.
You should make sure the card is unmounted before you turn off USB connectivity. That can cause this.
It will try to repair it however, somtimes it is unsuccessful.
Just take mine as the last option you can think.
Get some partition stuff, Acronis DiskDirector works well, I used a lot with damaged server harddisk.
Just DELETE it. (not wipe!)
and Recover it. If it was about master record fails which it's likely, it should be recovered in a few sec.
If it still not work, then grab some undelete, file recovery to recover your remaining stuff. I don't suggest it anyway though someone claim that it worked well, since those raw-based recovery only work with some general file. (doc, excel, blah blah)

Second corrupted SD card

I'm pretty bored of this problem...
a week ago I've found my sd card sand disk 4Gb class 4 corrupted when I found that everytime I take a photo, I found it corrupted when the phone is connected with PC and sd mouted...
so I take a sand disk 2Gb that I have had on a camera and I use it...
Today, again the same problem
2 sd card corrupted with no way to format it...
I always us CM7 (RC 7.1 when I had the 4Gb card and nightly now)...
Is the phone broken? or I have to do something...I've notice that this problem is very common, but I don't understand if is an hardware problem or software, kernel...
I also have Darktremor installed...if can help...
thanks for any advice
Have you tried formatting and repartitioning card?
I use sdformatter from web--does good job--settings are: Full Erase On and Size Adjustment On
Then repartition back in phone to 1gb 0 swap--that's what I use
Of course, back up sdcard tp pc first
Do you "eject" your phone from the PC before unmounting it?
I just press the unmount button on the phone and disconnect the cable I don't use the safe remove of window do you think is for that?

but i think Windows manage any USB storage device without keeping the cache too long by default. what's more he isn't writing anything onto the card but reading, so it shouldn't be a big problem.
yeah android read the card but it doesn't write anything....
can the problem is the darktremor?

That's your problem. You're yanking the card away from windows before it's done writing to it probably.
1) Eject from windows
2) Unmount in android
3) Unplug
I've had my android phone for over a year now and have only had one card go corrupt, but that was due to a buggy ass wifi teather app. I've never had a problem aside from that. However, I also never mount the sd card in windows. I just use Dropbox to transfer files back and forth, or for large files, I just copy over wifi via a lan share.
thanks...
to all...
there are discordant opinion about this who said that I have to first unmount then safe disconnect from Win and who said that I have first safe remove and then unmount...
I've try to format the 4gb microsd with gparted live but I have error over error "can't mount, cant format" and so on...
The 2gb microsd now work fine, I succefully format it now I have an ex3 partition and a fat32 with Darktremor...
There is no way to plug an android phone and trasfer file without mount sd?
of course there are. try adb push or adb pull...
Is the card a class 10? I had class 6 clean from start to end but changed to a 32gb class 10 in the last 4 months and tonight was the second time filenames got messed up just by connecting to the PC. I connected, hit USB mount and a bunch of folder/file names were messed and stuff on the LOST.DIR.
Gonna get a new card tomorrow.

[Q] Dumb CM7 Rooting problem

Hi, I have a nook color and an 8gb SD card. I've followed the posts to get winimage to write the generic-sdcard-v1.3.img written to my card and installed on my nook. However, when I shutdown the nook and put the SD back in my PC, there is no \Boot partition, and windows(xp) says the card is not formatted. What on earth am I doing wrong??
Thanks.
D
Put it back in the Nook after you have booted into CM7 and format it with the Nook. If you have a camera that takes micro SDHC cards you can probably format it with that as well but will probably want to delete any folders the camera creates later.
Well of course! How stupid am I?? Jeesh! THanks.
OK maybe I'm just missing something big.
After I install the SD card in the Nook with the CM7 upadate on it, the SDCard is modified such that when I remove it, the PC no longer recognizes the format. I get the card in my list of drives, but when selected it says "not formatted" If I choose format, it wipes the card and I can't boot to CM7 from it any more. I can't find a format option on the Bare CM7 image - just erase SD card -which still leaves it in a format that the PC can'd read to put the gapps on.
help??
Logical thinking, dr. wambo.
you have drive C which you install Windows OS on it, and then you format it, what do you expect?
In your case, "boot" MUST be there in order to work, if you format the card, it's gone for good. Question is why you format it after creating it?

Understood. My issue is that after I put the SD card into the Nook and boot the nook, it apparently reformats the SD card such that when I put it back in the PC, I can SEE that the card exists, but no files on it. If I check properties, it shows no free space on the disk (and none used for that matter.) So, I am unable to copy the gapps-gb-20110613-signed.zip file to the SD and restart the nook.
See?
A simple question, do you see the "boot" when your plug the card into your PC (running Windows)?

I do not. Windows explorer shows an SD card in the list, but when selected, it says the card is not formatted.
Card seems to boot fine in the Nook. I must be doing something really dumb. I was able to install honyecomb successfully using this card, but wanted the functionality of CM7. Darn, this just shouldn't be that hard.
Wait, if the card still "seems to boot fine in the Nook" then it means the "boot" is still there, it just Windows not seeing it.
On PC side, try to insertion and removal a few times and see what happens.
If completely nothing, switch to other Windows PC OR if you have the USB-SD adapter, use it.

I should mention that the nook boots fine off the card provided I don't Format it in the Windows box.
Have removed and reinserted the card multiple times into the Win (xp) box. No Joy. Tried a different machine and got exactly the same results.
This just can't be that hard!!
Are you using Windows PC or Linux?
Worst case, reinstall
Windows PC running. XP sp2. ADDITIONAL NOTE. After I winimage the SD card with the generic image, I do indeed have a \root partition. Once I insert it in the Nook and let it boot, shutdown, and I reboot, CM7 is installed and running from the card, but when I put it in the PC, the \root partition is no longer there.
Additional info. I've now tried this on 2 different SD cards and they both do the same thing.
Not sure if you're still having problems, but it's normal for Windows not to be able read the entire SD card after it's been imaged for CM7. There are I believe 4 partitions and it will generally only see the 1st (/boot). Additionally, it will sometimes only read correctly when using a USB card reader, rather than putting the uSD card into a built-in card reader in your PC (not sure why). Hope this helps.
Interesting...perhaps that's the problem. I'm using the internal SD reader on my laptop. I'll run out and get a USB reader and see if that helps.
THanks.

[Q] Issues with SD Card not mounting on CM10

Hi guys, long time reader and first time poster here with a question. I apologize in advance if this has been asked and answered, but I have searched throughout the nook forums and have not found a solution yet to my problem and any help is greatly appreciated.
I have been wanting to use CM10 as my daily driver on my nook for awhile now, however everytime I flash the ROM and get things set up, I run into an issue where the ROM does not consider my SD card to be mounted. I have adjusted the settings to be set to Mass USB Storage as one person suggested in the development thread, I have formatted it numerous times to try to see if that was causing the issue, and so far nothing has worked.
I know that the SD card that is in my nook is good as it shows up in ICS without any problems. Does anyone else have any idea on what I could try to get the SD card to mount properly in CM10?
Thanks again for any help, and many apologies if this is answered in another thread.

When you say mounted, you mean you cannot see it under storage devices within CM10? It does not show up in your file manager? That USB mass storage setting is just for seeing on your PC when you plug the USB cable in. It has nothing to do with seeing the card in CM10. And you tried formatting several times you said. How did you format it? In the PC with windows? You need to try SDFormatter which is a free windows program on the web. Other users have said that that makes them show up on the Nook. When the nook first starts up, it tries to read the SD and scan it, if it can't, it won't mount it. There could be something very simple wrong with the card that the nook sees and your PC does not.

Leap,
I have to apologize, I used the wrong terminology in my original post. It seems that the issue I am having is with the SD card being stuck in RO mode and not being able to write to it from CM10. Anything that I have tried to download via the Play Store fails to install with an error saying that it could not install to USB Storage or SD Card. I have formatted the card via Windows, CWM, and using the SDFormatter program to no avail. I have also tried to fix permissions via CWM and Rom Manager and that has not resulted in resolving the issue that I seem to be having. I love the speed at which CM10 runs, and if I can get the SD Card to be RW it would easily replace the ICS build that I've been using forever now, I just don't know what else I can try to get the card to be RW while running CM10.

The problem is CM10 is very finicky about the format on the card. If it does not like it, it mounts it read only. Look for SDFormatter on the web and format with that. Should fix it.
Edit, I just reread and said you tried that. That should have fixed it. Do it again but turn off quick format.

Leap,
Thank you for all the help you've provided, however it doesn't seem that doing a long format with overwrite in SD Formatter got it to work. I'm going to retreat back to ICS for now.

Just a question, after you format the card, do you move any files in it? I had the same exact problem and it must have been a defective file in my titanium backup folder because I had no problem using the same sd when I synch'd titanium via dropbox.
I installed the 19/11 nightly and it is better than anything I ever run on nook. even CM7
Tschumi,
After I finish formatting it via SD Formatter, I place it back into the nook completely blank and reboot the nook. After that, I try to download anything from the play store that requires SD install and it fails to install.

Use ROM Manager and select "Format SD card" which will allow apps to install. Nook will reboot into CWM and begin formatting SD card. Be FOREWARNED! You will lose anything you have stored on the SD card so make a backup and trasnsfer to your PC or somewhere you can later retrieve.
Ok so here's an update on this issue for me. It appears that no matter how many times I used SD Formatter to format my 16Gb micro sd card, it would not be recognized by CM10. I grabbed an old 8Gb micro SD card and threw it in my nook and it worked perfectly, so it appears that there's an underlying issue with the card itself that was causing the problems. Thanks to everyone for the tips and advice on how to fix this issue for me. I appreciate it.

I am having the same issue with my 16GB Patriot microSD card. The card is recognized, but always displays as full (26GB used) in the settings menu. I have reformatted numerous times to no avail. I have an old 4GB card in there now with no issues.

It is that Patriot brand and CM10. CM10 is very finicky about sdcards. If it does not like how one performs, it changes it to read only. You can try formatting the card with SDFormatter, which you can get free on the web. That may help, but it may not.
