[Q] Wifi broken, can't seem to fix it - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hiya,
Using the international i9505 LTE, I tried flashing faux's kernel today, and everything appeared to be working. I also then flashed the xposed framework/some modules. Afterwards, I realised my wifi wasn't working anymore, and disabling the xposed framework didn't help. I also tried flashing the ausdim kernel which didn't work, as well as flashing my modem file, and the apparent wifi fix files multiple times, none of which solved the problem.
I have a nandroid backup, but would rather not restore it atm as it was made a while ago and I don't want to restore all the apps and stuff, so does anyone have any idea how to go about solving this problem?

Basically yesterday I had the same problem, flash after flash didn't help. Can tell you exactly, what I did:
Found factory version of my firmware in my region (SEB Baltics for me, MGA). Then I reinstalled TWRP recovery through ODIN, wiped everything I could, after that flashed stock firmware 2 times consecutively (no reboot in odin, reboot manually after first flash and flash again).
After that everything went fine, and Wi-Fi started working again. MH1 custom ROM right now, going ok.

Googling seems to suggest having to reflash stuff multiple times (I've seen someone say they flashed their stock rom 11 times wtf), and there doesn't seem to be any set procedure that gets the flash to work... Did you also flash multiple times before this last run worked? Perhaps you just got lucky and it worked the last time? (I assume no one tries to bork their wifi and test if their last routine works again for them).
I'm asking mainly because I don't want to go through the hassle of reflashing the entire rom again; would it be correct to say that wifi is just contained in the modem/radio file, and I should try spam flashing that?

No. WiFi drivers are in the kernel, not the modem. If you were going to flash anything, you'd flash a kernel/rom.

I suggest you use titanium backup to bakup your apps, it's not a tough job as you thought. that might be the easiest way, although some data can't be backup.

Welp, bluetooth had no problems whatsoever. It was only the wifi, which didn't want to turn on. Now everything is ok.

Well, finally got around to reflashing stock as Gh0stR1pp3r suggested, which worked. Thanks
Nandroid, kernel flashing, and modem flashing all didn't work. No clue why. I flashed the ausdim kernel again and it worked this time around, so it's just weird I guess? :S
And unfortunately I seem to have messed up the titanium backup somehow, I can't seem to find any of the stuff I thought I backed up Oh well

No Service after flashing ROM done Nandroid b/u still No Service

Well I flashed NexusSence 0.3 earlier today and love it,
The only thing is I get no service and obviously cant use the phone or data, I thought this was a problem with the ROM but after restoring to a Nandroid back up I still get no service. I have several back ups and none of them resolve the issue.
Can someone please advise as what I do next.If anything. I have searched but not found anything that makes feel confident in doing anything else without first asking.
I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure I need to flash the radio .img but the question is which one??
Thanks
***********************************************************
I'm in no way blaming NexusSence for this, it could and probably was something I did or didnt do.
the funny thing is I still have signel bars that apear to work and when i go to
>setings>wireless & networks>mobile networks>network operators.
I can scan and picks up my local mobile network carriers,
When I choose O2 who ive got my contract with it says:
Registering on O2 Network
then:
Unable to connect to this network at this time. Please try later
HELP
Have you tried...
Have you tried going back completely stock and unrooting. Try using one of the official rom images in the dev section
Exactly the same issues.
I was on NSCollab before this, restored and facing the exact same issue as the OP.
Right now im flashing NSCollab again, will restore again if the fresh installation fixes the issue.
btw. which version of CWM are you using?
Something similar happened to me with an i9000. I solved it by flashing back to stock AND doing a factory reset on the stock ROM.
Also verify that your IMEI hasn't been erased.

iv'e had this happen on 2 occasions, first was on CM7 nightly 85, other was on Zuluzulu rom, i thought it had something to do with CM7, reverted to a former back up i made, wich was fine, and now on and AOSP rom, also without a problem!
really like to know what causes this problem, as i like CM7 roms the most!

[Q] GPS not working

GPS seemed to have been working up until I flashed one of the CM11 or other Kit Kat roms. I've since gone back to CM10.2 (stable), but I can't get a gps lock. Does anyone have suggestions to get this working? I have the Verizon version.
I've tried resetting A-GPS data with the GPS Status app and also by setting the regions with Android Tweaker. Neither seems to have done anything. Really hoping my GPS radio isn't borked.

Just had this same problem, I had to flash back my original nandroid (stock ota) to get a gps lock, thought my hardware was crapped as well. But I am guessing if you dont use your gps for a long time it loses the info for sats. I tried flashing PA ram, gummy, CM11 nothing would get a lock, so I said **** it, going to return it, put stock image back on and wallah, it came back, reflashed my OSE rom and it worked, worked in pa again as well and gummy.
I also tried the gps fix lg g2 zip thats out there, nothing, tried the recalibration from 5 different compass apps and gps "fix apps" nothing.

I unfortunately lost my stock ota backup . I tried flashing this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2533018), and I got stuck in the Verizon bootloop. I'm using TWRP 2.6.3.3.
I'm unfortunately on a Mac and can't follow the steps outlined here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476). Any help would be great. This is driving me crazy!

I ended up downloading and flashing a Malladus ROM (based on stock). I managed to get a GPS lock after that (hooray!). I'd assume if I jumped back to CM now, I'd be all set.

Wifi not turning on i9505 after flashing custom rom

Hello guys, after I flashed a custom rom my phone went into a bootloop. I decided to flash stock , via odin. After I flashed the stock rom for my region (open european) I got many FC messages , the phone was unusable.
I started digging and flashing roms. Now I have i9505xxugng8 which is a nordic country rom.
When I try to open wifi , the button gets green for one second but then it stays deactivated.
1. Tried to remove battery
2.Tried to delete the wpa_supplicant.conf file from /data/misc/wifi or /system/etc/wifi
3.Tried the non-hos bin.
Nothing worked. I'm desperate.

Try this steps
1. Rooted ! Open root explorer > System > Build.prop change this in the build.prop:
ro.securestorage.support=true TO ro.securestorage.support=false Save , Reboot
2. Either flash a diff kernel.
Have a nice day.

The Wi-Fi problem is knox related , I don t think switching go cm11 would solve the Bluetooth problem.

I also have this problem. Went from CM11 to stock (GF was supposed to use the phone and preferred stock...).
And now, no wifi, tried most things, checked build.prop, deleted wpa_supplicant, pulled battery, cleared cache.
Nothing works.
I'd be ok with going back to CM11, but the S-View cover won't work with it.
Any more ideas?

I don't think this is your problem, but just to put this out there in case other people stumble upon the thread....
This can be caused by using a custom kernel in a CM11 based ROM that was built after about August 3rd (give or take a few days)
CM changed the way the Wifi and data are managed by the kernel. So older customer kernels aren't compatible.

[Q] [solved] GPS Not Working After Cyanogen Mod Install

Hi All,
I just got a new used Samsung Galaxy S4 on Sprint and brought it over to Ting (way, way, way cheaper). I got everything working with the stock ROM, including GPS, but I wanted to install Cyanogenmod, so I rooted it, flashed TWRP 7.8, and flashed the latest Cyanogenmod (snapshot M12), with Gapps, and a zip file with the Ting data XML files to get 3G and LTE working.
Everything seemed to work great, but then while driving I noticed that the GPS just did not get a lock. After trying for an hour, it still had nothing. I installed GPS Status and saw that it had no satellites. Clearing the GPS cache and re-downloading data with that app did not solve the problem. I tried GPS Doctor without success and the GPS fix equally without success.
I rebooted, then factory reset, then erased everything and flashed the latest CM nightly, all with no success.
I found some similar problems online at these places:
http://myblog-online.co.uk/2013/12/the-continuing-saga-of-my-galaxy-s4-custom-roms/
http://forum.cyanogenmod.org/topic/98811-gps-not-working-23rd-nightly/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2172670
These are all old and none gave me anything that useful. Is it a GPS radio issue? Is there anything I can do?
I also just found this page: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Known_Issues_page_for_d2lte, but it is for the S3, not sure what to make of it.
I made a nandroid backup of my stock rom, but then I copied it to my computer, and when I copied it back again it didn't work. TWRP failed to restore with the error "No partition selected for restore".
My plan now is to flash the stock rom with odin, confirm that GPS works there, and then try again, but this is becoming a huge time sink and I have a lot of other things to do.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can fix this? I am pretty sure it isn't a hardware issue.

That's is pretty much what you have to do. Its go back to stock and get a lock there in maps. When you have a lock just go back to recovery and flash your custom ROM of choice. That is pretty much the only fix.

Thanks ROMANTiC KiD,
Good to know that I am heading down the right path before I spend a lot of time on this.
Should I not erase everything when I flash the custom ROM? I am pretty sure last time I used TWRP advanced erase to clear everything on the phone before installing. Should I just do a regular factory reset in TWRP to install CM in order to keep GPS functionality?
Thanks!

Yes sir you can factory reset in twrp just remember to back up your files first! And you should still retain GPS lock.

Thanks for the confirmation. I did exactly that and I can confirm that it did indeed work.
Thanks so much for the help.
Hi all,
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I am having this issue and the stock firmware flash isn't solving the issue. It is all very odd because it doesn't actually retain any kind of lock after flashing. I'm following instruction on here, but after locking gps on stock, then going to CM I cannot get a fix. It either had a massive radius on Maps, or it just locks to my home or work location.
Since trying much more I have managed to get the occasional satellite lock via GPS Locker, but even then as soon as I move from either my house or work, it can't find anything to lock onto and just defaults to a static location.
Is there anything you would recommend? I have 2 Samsung GS4's and they both exhibit the same problem. I have also tried this on an S4 Mini, but that retained lock just fine. I'm really confused as to what to actually try. If you could recommend anything I'd be very grateful.
Again, I'm sorry to res an old thread, but no one has been replying to the one I started for this issue :/
Your problem may be that there is some new issue with the newer firmware. I had success by first flashing the *old* firmware (you can download it from my dropbox here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/o3f3ynyezyy4yw9/L720VPUFNAE_L720SPTFNAE_L720VPUFNAE_HOME.tar.md5?dl=0) and then upgrading to the second to last firmware update for the GS4: which gives you Android 5 but without fixing the MMS bug.
After that I flash TWRP with Odin, and then do a full erase in TWRP followed by flashing the latest CM. That series of steps works for me every time, although I found that large changes to my physical location (e.g. flying to England from California) cause it to break again. I actually had to sit in a cafe in an English airport with my laptop out flashing my phone back to stock just so that I could use Google maps to get to my mother's house. It was pretty ridiculous. Because of that and other issues, I now just use stock. I hate it, but I do it anyway. Good luck.

[SOLVED] WiFi Completely Broken …

Below is my original post; however, I've since solved the problem. In an effort to help others with the same problem, I've written a Guide, which should explain exactly what to do if your WiFi is suddenly "broken" due to flashing issues.
Here's the link: OnePlus 5 WiFi Fix
Many thanks to everyone who offered help, especially subaash and hallo dare, who put me in the right direction.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Greetings, everyone.
Sadly, for specific reasons unknown, my WiFi appears to be completely broken.
Over the last few days I've gone "flash happy" by trying several Oreo ROMs for my OP5. Some worked while others just froze at the boot animation.
Unfortunately, shortly after flashing the xXx-NoLimits Oreo ROM, which got me to the initial set-up screen, my WiFi would not connect. So, I then bypassed the WiFi part and finished the set-up. Everything seemed to be working very well, but I could not get WiFi to work.
Yes, I could engage the Wifi slider to the ON position, and there would be a list of SSIDs; however, oftentimes even my 2 SSIDs would not display. When they did, and I tried to connect, I would see the connection attempt, but it would not complete the connection. Only the word "saved" would be shown under the SSID name. Then it would automatically try to reconnect, but without success.
I've tried virtually everything I can think of to solve the problem, but I can't connect to WiFi.
All other communications work, i.e., Bluetooth, Data, making and receiving calls. It's ONLY the Wifi that's not working.
Yes, I completely wiped my device and re-installed the original OxygenOS (4.5.14), but that didn't work. I also tried completely wiping the device and then installing that latest OxygenOS v4.5.15, but that didn't solve the problem, either.
I went back and flashed all the previous custom ROMs in an attempt to see if any of them would work, but nothing. I tried NitrogenOS, HalogenOS, Liquid Remix, xXx NoLimits, and they all could not connect to WiFi.
I even tried a few WiFi Fix apps on Google Play, but they didn't work, either.
Oh, yes … I even checked my router. It's perfectly fine. I can get WiFi on my laptop without a problem. Furthermore, when I went to a local coffee shop this morning that provides free WiFi, my phone could not connect, just like at home.
Does anyone have ANY suggestions?
Thank you,
Peter
I would say this is to do with your firmware/modem.
I did have this issue on a non Oreo ROM and in the end I just did a dirty flash and it worked.

I've tried flashing both the 4.5.14 and 4.5.15 firmware, with no luck; however, I accidentally deleted my modem nandroid about a week ago.
Do you know where I might find a flashable modem file?
Thanks,
Peter
Addendum: I found the following site for Firmware & Modems:

I'll try flashing them and report back.
Addendum 2: NOPE! Didn't work. I flashed a few different firmware & modems, 4.5.13, 4.5.14 and 4.5.15, but WiFi is still broken. Yes, I first flashed the appropriate OS version before flashing the firmware and modem. In other words, I always matched the OS version with the firmware & modem version, but no success. Everything works except WiFi. Hmm, still stumped.

Sadly, no. I've tried absolutely everything I can think of, all without success. It's very frustrating because absolutely everything else works, except WiFi.
All I can do now is wait for suggestions from others, or take the phone to a repair shop (which I'm hesitant to do).

Thanks for replying. If you happen to get it sorted, please let me know. I will do likewise if I manage to fix it. Thanks
Try reflashing the rom. Not sure why, but that happened to me and reflashing the rom fixed it.

Done that already, tried old roms of OOS and Oreo, but still no joy. Heads wrecked with it.

Do you have a full rom backup? I mean of the last working rom you had before all the flashing? If so, from a full stock rom (1.53gb or close) of the same build as the backup (ie... 4.5.14) wipe and flash that rom, then wipe and restore the backup you have if the last working rom. If they doesn't work I think you're likely looking at a hardware issue.

Same problem but only on my 5GHz network and dont know how to fix

Thank you,
Peter

So first of all the reason why it is broken is because of the oreo firmware that you flashed earlier. Now what you should do is flash stock recovery and flash the oreo build and boot it up and running. Once you've done that flash the rollback rom (which suppose to downgrade your oreo firmware to nougat firmware). Once you've done it basically it fixes you're wifi issue.

Thanks! I'm quite aware of the need for caution with modems. Sadly, though, it didn't solve the problem.

There's a button for that son..
Also the firmware / modem will be the problem, either upgrading or rolling back..either way it'll be the cause.

Okay, let me first answer a couple of questions. Like I said in my first post, I DID flash the original ROM, as well as other OEM OxygenOS ROMs, all without success. Yes, I used the exact same ROM that was working perfectly before the problem. Yes, I also had a FULL Nandroid of the working system, but restoring that also did nothing to solve the problem.
Okay, with that out of the way, I went to a repair shop this morning to try and solve the problem. It was unsuccessful. The technician said it's unlikely to be hardware related because I can still get the phone to recognize all local SSIDs. I simply can't connect to any of them. Just like hallo dare said in his post a few back, when I try to connect to my SSID, it tries to connect for a second or two, and then it just shows "saved" and wifi is disabled.
So, for now I'm still completely stumped.

Okay, I will do exactly what subaash said and report back. I, too, agree that it's probably software related, which is why I'm actively attacking this issue.
Be back as soon as I can.

P.S. "Son?" Hmm, I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm older than you (will be 60 in March).
Success ... maybe?
Well, well. It appears the previous suggestions were correct. So far it's successful, but I haven't quite finished the initial set-up. All I can say is that WiFi is working, and I'm grateful for that.
However, it was a frightening ordeal. At one point I thought my device was bricked, and I didn't know what to do. However, with some thought, I was able to solve the problem.
Good news, though, is that I DID NOT have to revert back to Nougat. I'm now running Oxygen Oreo 8.0.0 Open Beta 2.
I will provide a detailed instructions of what I did a bit later. I simply want to get everything up-and-running, which could take a few hours.
Here's an abbreviated version:
Downloaded Oxygen Oreo 8.0.0 Open Beta 1 from here:
http://downloads.oneplus.net/oneplus-5/oneplus_5_oxygenos_openbeta_1/
Downloaded Stock Recovery from Post #2 here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/how-to/official-oxygenos-4-5-2-7-1-1-ota-t3627003
Copied both files above to root of device internal storage
Reboot into TWRP recovery
Flashed stock recovery in TWRP
Reboot into stock recovery
COMPLETELY Wiped the entire system ... absolutely everything ... including internal storage. This is where I had the initial problem. I did not wipe everything, including internal storage, and I ended up with a mixture of jumbled numbers and letters when looking at the file structure.
Using ADB Sideload within the stock recovery, I "moved/flashed" the ROM ZIP to the device
After successful sideload, I said yes to installing the ROM
The ROM then installed and, voila, I'm at the initial set-up screen.
Okay, that's all for now. I'll be back later.
Peter
Format data resolves the problem (at least with me...)
