problem with my s4 power/battery - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
For about a week ago i started to get a big problem with my phone, it happens most time when im in a game (doesnt mather what game or what type of game). When i have played for a while(30 min to 1 hr) the phone shuts down as it was empty for battery and it wont start again untill i plug in the charger. When it starts the batter indicator says its empty and chargig. It doent mather if the battery is 100% or 40% it still happens. If i use the phone normal and not play any games and so on but surfing, running other programs and so on the battery is normal.
First i thought it was something with the samsung android version so i rooted and changed it and tried a few rom from the forum but i still got the problem.
Is it a software problem or a battery problem? Have this happend to anyone else?

Edit:
Its spins easy around on both side's. So do that mean that my 2 1/2 month phone got a ****ed up battery?

[Q] [Help] My battery is draining too fast, some soft problem ?

I bought this Hero off eBay, and it was dodgy since the begining.
The phone had cyanogen, and was restarting itself occasionally.
So i wiped it, installed 2.1 and it got fixed, but now i have a problem with battery drainage.
Its insance, 10minutes-10% im pretty sure its not supposed to be like that. with or without wifi/3d turned on, its just riddiculous.
I borrowed battery from a friend, and that didint make any change, i installed latest update from the autoupdate in the phone and still its bad. I read somewhere here that its faulty email app that keeps on trying to sync and drains battery, how do i fix that ?
I did a full wipe, cleared cache and everything back to factory settings, with no apps installed it goes from 100% to 0% in an hour.
I downloaded 2.1 from some android forum, as i was unable to find one here (there are only links to 1.5 on the xda.wiki WHY?)
If you can point me to a proper 2.1 (or higher?) software to download that doesnt do this crazy **** i'll be happy as infant on crack.
Please help, here is my software information:
Firmware: 2.1-update1
Baseband version: 63.18.55.06JU_6.35.09.26
Kernel version: 2.6.29-063c4d24
Build number: 3.32.405.2 CL191507release-keys
Software number: 3.32.405
Browser version: WebKit 3.1
Try calibrating your battery it gave me a huge boost on my hero... went from getting 16hours day.. to about 30hours on a single charge!!
Every time you flash a new ROM you need to calibrate your battery. The battery meter in the OS (Android in this case) is generated based on the battery stats file.
Battery stats is erased when you flash a new ROM.
Easiest method of battery calibration when you're intending on flashing a ROM:
Ensure battery is fully charged according to the OS. Switch phone off, unplug charger and plug back in. Once light is green, leave charging for another 30 minutes (light goes green at approx 95% charge).
Switch on, flash ROM. Allow first boot to complete.
Shut phone off. Disconnect charger. Remove battery. Replace battery. Place on charge, light green, leave charging another 30 minutes, yadda yadda. Switch phone on, boot immediately to recovery. Wipe battery stats.
Boot phone up. Now would be a good time to install JuicePlotter. Use as normal. Do not charge, let the battery run down completely. When the phone shuts itself off, power it back on. Repeat process until it won't switch on anymore.
Remove the battery. Put the battery back. Turn the phone on. Repeat until it won't turn on anymore.
Now charge the battery on the mains to 100% while the phone is off, keep charging for 30 minutes after light goes green. Power on. Voila, fully calibrated battery.
The last part, run until completely dead and charge only needs to be done once in a while (this is calibrating the battery innards, not the battery stats)

hah, yea thats what i accidentally figured. phone was switching off, but when i powered it back on it had 30%.. and it was like that 3 or 4 times.
I ran it down completely and now am charging it till max, we'll see what happens. at worst i'lkl start your process from the beginning thx !
I diidnt know you had to do that. i've been playing with my G1 and not even once i had to calibrate that.. maybe i should
How'd it go? Any improvement on battery life?
it diidnt help I did what you quoted step by step and its still running down the battery like crazy :/ what else can i do ? im thinking of switching to 1.5 but thats just not progressive and my friends phone is running fine on 2.1, with the same battery even.
Edit: i've installed task killer and killed all the mail checking apps.. hope that is the problem
Edit2: it didint help at all, in 5 minutes i lost 15% fcuking hell !
I just switched to 1.5 and its still happening ! I using a different battery and its just as bad... why is this happening to me
ill try second to latest radio from xda wiki.. im running out of ideas, what else can i do ?
That really wierd... its not the battery if you have tried using different ones. Its not the ROM if u have changed it.
Have you tried disabling auto-updates? and auto-checks for emails. Which email client do you have? you should find the option to "sync-never" in the app settings.
Buying it from ebay is kinda ominous though.. was it described as faulty? perhaps you could contact the seller and request a refund is all else fails?
you can try using setcpu to underclock the cpu.
i have similar situation as you. before going to bed around 11pm, it showed 50% left, turned on airplane mode, then in the morning around 6am, phone was powered off.
now it has been 2 days, still have 20% left.

Did you ever take into consideration that some part of the hardware might be damaged?
Devices that got water damaged, sometimes show weird symptoms as well:
- They still boot up and seem to work well from the first sight
- The battery drains very quickly
- Some of the peripherals are not working stable or not starting up anymore (e.g. wifi, bt, gps)
- Other crazy things might happen as well (e.g. random reboots, backlight flicker, etc.)
So you might have a look at the mainboard. Red stickers indicate water damage!
Regards,
scholbert
Yea but if it were damaged would it show 50% battery after restarting thinking it had reached 5% ? i dont have the tools or will to unscrew it.
i paid 100 pounds fo it, the normal price of a used hero, but the auction said "phone restarts for no reason" and they do not accept returns, so im propably screwed :I
I had an old blackberry 8300 curve, i had it in the bathroom while i was showering, got too moist, turned the detection pads red but phone seemed to work fine after i dried it out. But the battery went to crap progressively in the manner. I would charge to 100%, take it off the charger and maybe an hour it would say less than 10%, do a battery pull and it would go back up to maybe 80% and last maybr another hour and keep doing that till it would normally drain on top od the numerous reboots i would be doing until eventually it would just drain and die.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Can dead pixels cause this ? i have like three.. but then again why would it show 50% after restarting from 5%..
the thing is its not draining the battery, just registering it wrong
Any updates on this? Any resolution?

sorry mate i have tried everything unsuccessfully and returned the phone to the seller.. dont tell me you bought it ? (london)
No, but i have a samsung galaxy tab and experience similar symtoms. It does not bother me too much, the battery life is still great. Just the percentage is off and i need to restart from time to time.
I read similar complaint from droid x forum too.

Screen freezes / Battery drain

I got my SGS II since yesterday, but I already have a problem.
When using the device, there is always a chance that the screen suddenly freezes. No matter what you are doing at that moment: browsing, playing a game, listening to music,... . And the processor usage has, in my opinion, nothing to do with the chance of freezing.
The only thing I can do is resetting the phone by using the power button.
After the phone rebooted, I noticed that the battery level dropped a certain percentage. The amount depends on how long you wait to reboot the device.
Now, last night, I left the phone behind with a battery of 20%. The strange thing is that when I looked this morning, the battery was 25%. And on the graph you see that the battery level increased. The time span was circa 8 hours. (The device didn't freeze in those 8 hours, so it only freezes when you actually use it)
Somebody recognizes this problem? Has it something to do with the battery or the device itself?
which country ?
Did you try updating the firmware of your phone?
@ Rouvax: Belgium! Why?
@ otacon888: Yes, I did. Still the same problem.
Brand new i would take it back .
jje
Yeah take it back - you don't want to pay this much for a glitchy phone.
(edit) Actually do a factory reset first and if that doesn't work, take it back.

Battery problems

Hi,
I konw there are so many of these threads but I've problem with a brand new battery..
I've a brand new battery and have calibrated properly after flashed ddjp6 with fugumod ultra...
Now when I play a game or use internet, it suddenly shut down (the phone) within 5 minutes even at 91% battery.
And when I started phone I put on charging, it copleted in 15 to 20 minutes...
Again use , again shut down...
Any one can help..
Thanks in advance...
Is it an original battery?
Ya
It's from samsung store...
Mine is also new nd facing same problem...
Sent from my GT-I5800 using XDA App
Is this a problem with some app?
Because phone shuts down before 0 battery...
I had this problem but it was solved after buying a new battery. Your new battery may be defective...? I don't know, try your friend's battery or something first.
Sent from my GT-i9003 powered by MIUI
Calibrate your battery using battery calibration app.. You can download it from market for free
Sent from my GT-I5800 using xda premium
I've tried it.
So I came to know that battery was 90% before starting internet,
Then shut down after a few minutes...
When I started the phone , it was 40%...
So before battery goes zero,
Phone, shut down...
Ive done it...
Battery 90%
Started internet
Phone shut down within a few minutes
Started the phone
Battery was 40%
That meabs before battery goes zero,
Phone shuts down
:what:
Is your problem solved?
Tell me if you get any soln...
I have the same problem! My battery is 1 year old. I changed few ROMs and Kernels, wiped batterystats... nothing helped!
I'm using internet for 5min. (100%->89% sometimes 70%) and than it shut down immediately.
connect it on charger (90%)
after 5-10min. charging, battery is 100%
without using it lasts for 3-5 hours.
Now I'm waiting for a new battery to come, and after I test it I will give a report.
Go to customer care...
I just have solved my problem...
If you can't find any other way...
so what did they tell you? you got a new battery? is it a problem in hardware or software?
I went to customer care and they are saying that its hardware problem
To nidjo 16
If your problem not get solved after a new battery, go for store,
Because we already have tried kernel and rom options...
My problem now get solved
Hope your problem get solved...
Well they told me that it was some hardware problem...
Though they didn't tell me about the problem exactly,
My phone is working good and that is what I need
I'm having the same problem.
Have anyone tried replacing the battery?
If the battery is even slight bend,
Replace it
Rude customer service by samsung
Samsung service centre in RK Mutt rd, Chennai is very very Hostile to customer.
I was treated worst by the 4 jokers at the counter
everyone acting busy and thats what prompted me to find this wonderful forum..
The battery problem can be solved as follows:
1. Discharge battery by games or any high battery consuming apps
2. Charge the phone overnight [it may take 5-10 full discharge cycles for battery to understand and give a good backup!!
3. delete Battery stats using CWM
Try an alternate kernel..
Some modifications I got with my customer care (which is very good! )
For 1
Charge after battery goes below 20 at least once a month...
For 2
Don't charge over night, when the battery is new...
At least for the first time
More stuff
Do not use much during charging...
At least internet or wifi
And don't charge for too much time...
(i mean when battery level is still high for use)
Cheers....
Had same problem
used a new Rom and new Kernel and tried so much.
Battery Calibration dont helped.
then i changed battery and yeah that helped since the new battery all is working well
But yeah if it helps I must say that i charged my phone most time via usb and used it for internet via usb teethering, now i only charge it over night and the battery stays much longer
When only use it for music and use internet only shot or use wlan then it stays for 3 or more Days and i think that is very good for an android phone !

Another strange battery thread

Hey,
yes i know: another battery thread. But tbh i havn't seen a thread with a similar problem description so far. Im using a Note 3 SM-9005
After my Note3 got super slow with normal samsung rom, i decided to flash it and install LineageOS 14.X. It works amazing! Feelt like a super new phone to me. Just some problems with rotation but i could life with that. One year later my battery started to drain faster. But a while after that i could fully charge my phone, watch some YT videos (like 20min overall) and then the phone just goes off. Its super hot near camera (processor i guess?) after turning it on again it was at 1%. 1 Month ago i tried to finaly fix it by flashing to LineageOS 15.X (Android 8.1) but the problem is still the same. And now its not just videos, if the phone screen is on for more then 20min it will turn off (even if it says 50%)
But not enough.
- After shutting down automaticly, it start itself again and shutdown again and so on. Until i plugin a charger then it stops doing it (or if i remove the battery).
- If im just listining to music it works fine (no screen on time), but while listining music in freezes for 1 up to 3 seccends (on avg every 10s one "freeze")
- It can happen after 5min of usage after charging it to 100% or i can listin to music for over 70min, than can have it in my pocket for 9 hrs, can hear music again for 70min and it still works (all of that with less to none SOT)
I havnt tried so much tbh, cuz i always thought it is a battery problem. But the new battery I got 2 days ago still has the exact same problem. I've read something about save mode and I booted it in save mode and the phone didnt get hot (not even warm!) with 20min SOT browsing (had no time to test it more). But the only apps that I have installed are Spotify, Firefox, WhatsApp and the Blizzard Auth.
Now i tested using a calibrate battery app (my phone isnt rooted but the app said it worked) and now im charging it up to 100% again to test it. But I dont think it worked.
Anyone here with more ideas I could try?
One full wipe and install stock rom .
Charge battery and test over two weeks .
Calibration app NO thats fake it does not and cannot calibrate a battery ( see multiple posts )
Its just the usual battery question and a search answers your question .
How long have you been using that battery? Get a new battery and your problem is solved.
I had similar problems with battery charging to 100% and suddenly going down to 50% and suddenly switching off. Changed battery and all was well again.

I just bought a new battery. TBH it defenetly cant be a good one for that cheap price. But I just flashed back to Stock Rom. With the old battery same problem, but with the new one it works good so far. nearly all bugs that came up the last few month are gone. While setting it up, the phone got really hot (it had to work pritty hard i guess to update everything). This is why JJEgan mentioned to use it for atleast a week i guess.
But an important question: is it possible to flash back to a new version again after like a week? Or am i now forced to use this stone age version of Android. (I guess all samsung apps can be removed if i decied to root the phone)

Mi 9t drains battery under night

Hello, is this happened to everyone else? It just drained down to zero in just one night, any fix?
is This happened to you after charging your phone? This happened to me once, I was charging my phone and after reach 100% I unplugged this was on the night, 6 hours later in the morning I noticed battery was 4% this means 96% was eaten on that 6 hours. I was on a rush, so rebooted the phone and plugged to the charger again. Like I said this happened once. I'm not sure if some app/google service/service keep my phone woken all that 6 hours.
It happened to me also. Same as above comment

Same for me too, but my phone was fully drained.. Maybe a software update will fix it.
Happened to me before debloating my phone and while keeping the phone under a pillow.
Maybe a clash with the feature for detecting if you're using the phone to show the fingerprint icon on screen? I disabled that too now.
Happened to ne yesterday. Weird. Eea stable 10.3.12
it's pretty crazy. it happened to me 2 times. battery drains is insane, about 15mins I lost 8 to 15 percent!!!
first time I did everything I could to stop it but no luck, I decided to do a factory reset and it was fine for two weeks. the second time started yesterday, I even tried gsam battery and enabled the more stats using adb. all it could find were consuming the battery are :
1- kernel android os
2- system adsprpcd
I've tried these still no luck.
1- clear data :
play store
play services
google
2- disable dual sim 4g - note: I use one sim.
3- disabled all the apps in permissions>start in background
4- uninstalled about every apps I've installed
In my case I struggling with Google Play Services eating up my battery, I tried everything (xiaomi.eu rom, full restore, clear cache of Play Services etc...)
The issue it's still present even with updating the app with the newest versions. You could check you consumption to see what's using your battery

Not very healthy habit btw, better not to have the phone so close to your head all the time as battery consumption could be later your least problem.
Did your steps helped in that situation? As if pillow would be the culprit, some of the flip covers could cause the same.

I didn't have the issue since, but I don't recall leaving it under a pillow since either.
My entire phone setup is documented here so you can try uninstalling the crap I've uninstalled and the relevant settings for the FP scanner.
