[Q] Galaxy s4 bootloop - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hi,
I have a galaxy s4 att rooted phone that is stuck in a boot loop. It turns on and works until it gets to to the att logo then it freezes. It happened because I tried to install a custom font on my phone using font installer. I looked everywhere on xda, google, and different sites but I didn't find anything. What I tried to do was use odin 3 and get it back to stock. I really don't need any of my data its fine if I don't get it back but I need it to be fixed. Its soft-bricked at the moment. I tried using different odin3 softwares and different files to work with odin and my phone, but they all give me fails. I used different usb cables and ports on my computer. I took all the advice I could from the internet but nothing. I was hoping someone could help me out here?

Can you get into recovery mode? If you can do a factory reset. It'll get you past the boot loop.

Yes but my only options are
Reboot system now
Apply update from adb
Apply update from external storage
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Apply update from cache
When I click wipe data/factory reset it just gives me the option to wipe the data.

I love how no one is asking the most important question... Are you on MF3, OP? It sounds like you are and if so, you are pretty much screwed unless you know ADB and know exactly what went wrong OR if the wipe data/factory reset works.
They are both the same by the way. Wiping data is a factory reset.

Well, you're helpful. The dude has a serious problem and you butt in with that? Troll somewhere else!

Unfortunately ADB is not a specialty of mine. I also have no idea what went wrong. I know what you told me, but there is more specific things than the process of changing the font.
A system file that got changed. What was the change? Where is the file located? What is the file name? Are there more than one that could have been changed?
I am more of a hardware specialist. I know the bare basics of software but not enough to be confident enough to walk you through changing system files.

Have a nice day

Manually put the phone into download / ODIN mode (if you can), then, manually cancel out of download mode and see if your phone will reboot.
Like this guy tried in this post...and see if it works for you.

I'll go with that. Didn't want to make you look like a bad guy. I agree, people here need to do a lot more research before they mess with their phones. No worries. I know you know a lot about the devices. I too hate to see people mess up their phones because they don't read and learn.

No harm done. If i knew exactly how to solve OP's problem, I would. I would also tell them to not mess with stuff that can break their expensive ass phone until he/she fully understands the risk involved. I completely understand the risks and am ready to have a broke device. I am still careful with my phone though because I don't want to have to be ready. Especially since my phone shipped with MDL. I don't want to risk getting a MF3 device.

lol, yeah I suppose it did.
I think I inferred that this was at the inception of the flash, and not something that just started happening.
He did factory reset and it is still doing it, which tells me it must just be the ROM.

Flash the same rom again from recovery without wiping anything.
Edit: I was too late.
I wouldn't want to flash a rom because in the past I nearly ended up bricking my phone. I got Android on this phone through someone else. Isn't there another way around this, something more simple

Nope.
Since the problem originated without apparent reason, we don't know what caused it; we can't really tell you how to fix it without a re-flash.
And by the way, you can never brick your phone through CWM. So just re-flash the ROM. Besides, that "someone" had already done the hard part. He installed everything for you, now you just need to put the zip on your sdcard, boot into recovery and "install zip from sdcard".
So can i install any rom or just the same one and is there any thread on this.

You can flash any ROM and you will not brick your phone. You literally cannot brick an HD2 with anything android related, ONLY with radio stuff and WM6.5, so just read up on how to flash one and flash another ROM.

if something has been installed into the system partition, then it will still be there after a hard reset. Example, if you install a data2ext script, then do a hard reset, it will still be there when the phone restarts.

Yeah, that's why I told him to dirty flash the same ROM, but he has no clue which ROM he flashed, so at this point I think he should just find a ROM he thinks he'll like and clean flash it.
As long as he's messing with Android he can't do any actual harm.

What I meant is, you can install your previous ROM without having to do anything to your device aside of putting the previous ROM on the sd and flashing.
However, that DOES NOT mean you can install any other ROM without modifying the partitions.
And yes, there's a thread for this, it's called search.
P.S: Pay attention to the italicized keywords.
Do this as the easiest thing,
go to settings > about phone, and scroll all the way till you see the kernel version and build version.
Take a screenshot of that and upload it if you can.
This will tell us what ROM you have and you can dirty flash it.

Next time do not ever ever flash a rom that is not meant for the device. Is your phone a S4? No. Is it a HTC One? No. Stick with ROMs and kernels meant for your device and you'll be good.

I'm no expert, but obviously you've overwritten your modem/radio partition, maybe even corrupted. I don't know if you could zero that partition (with dd codes) and then flash one of our radios... Not sure if that would work...

Is Goo 100% safe?

Hello! I thought I'd make a thread about this because I ask myself this question since a long time. Is it 100% safe to use the Goo manager app from the play store? I mean: 1.Root Nexus 4 on computer
2.Install Goo manager app onto your device
3.Install openrecoveryscript. This is hard for me, what is the chance it will install a recovery that isnt made for my phone? And if its completely safe, can I then always update the recovery in the Goo app?
Thanks for reading this and I hope you guys want to help me!
I use goomanager all the time. I haven't had any problems at all.
The only way it could install the wrong recovery is if you are changing the device id in the build.prop.

Not sure what's wrong...

So today I decided to fire up my old continuum and it wouldn't boot. Naturally I went into cwm and tried to restore my old backup. Looks like it didn't want to after it said it was complete I rebooted system and the phone sits on the Samsung splash screen and vibrates.
I pulled the battery and then went back into cwm and wiped data, cache, and dalvik cache. Tried to boot again and it did the same thing.
So I just want to get the phone back up and running. I don't plan on activating it. I just need it to boot to run some apps daily.
I was thinking of ways to do this and I think if I flash the stock 2.2 rom in recovery it might work. Or should I Odin back?
I don't really remember how to use Odin since it's been so long. Nor do I have any of the files on my pc.
Any suggestions on what I should do to get it back up?
Thanks.

Honestly I would just go back in and use Odin. I have deleted most of my old files. but they should all still be on the forum. Some of the links may be broken. I can always check for you and repost files if links are broken and I have still have them. (I can't remember if I wiped that hard drive or not, the laptop was misbehaving and I think I did a clean install). I will try and check tonight. You might want to try reinstalling the base file in CWM depending on which version you are running, I have had some backups go corrupt if I changed the wrong thing...

[Q] How to save files from soft bricked Nexus 4

Hi all; I have a soft bricked Nexus 4. I need a way to save it without wiping the files. I have an audio file I need to rescue from the phone. All online solutions I have found so far assume that I can access the phone features/settings (I can't) or that I can remove the battery (I can't - it's a Nexus 4). The phone is stuck in recovery mode.
I'd be hugely appreciative if anyone can tell me how to either:
A) retrieve my audio file from the phone
or
B) unbrick the phone without losing data
Do you have a custom recovery or are you stock? Also, is your bootloader unlocked?

Thanks, jd1639. I *think* the only thing that happened was that the battery went dead. The battery is not dead now.

I guess I am stock? I don't do anything fancy to my phone. I'm too much of a noob.

What kinds of things could cause this? Could a dead battery make it do that? Is there a way to get the phone back?

Does anyone know how an unlock can be done (without wiping the phone)?

If you can't boot thart's nothing left to do at this point. Unlocking the bootloader will wipe the device. But you might be able to save the device
