[Q] Wifi Constantly Connecting/Disconnecting - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys,
Just got my i9500 and solved a few setup issues but one I can't seem to resolve: The Wifi turns itself off even when it's set to "Always" in Settings>Connections>Wi-fi>Advanced>Keep Wi-fi on during sleep = Always.
Infact, as I'm typing this I'm realising that the Wi-FI is constantly connecting/disconnecting!
I'm running the stock ROM of 4.2.2 :
Baseband Version - I9500XXUBMG9
Kernal - 3.4.5-768420
[email protected]#1
Build number JDQ39.I9500XXUBMEA
Any thoughts?

As is always the way, as soon as I posted I stumbled across the potential fix!
http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s3/566171-wifi-issues-disconnects-etc-fixed-me.html
Even though it was for the S3, the same options work on the S4 and "PSM" (Power Save Mode) was switched on and I've now set this to OFF.
Seems to be OK now.
Hope that helps someone else

If you find it happens again, try using a static IP (in the phone settings for the WiFi connection you're using) rather than DHCP.

Thanks for the idea but it's been rock-solid since the PSM change above.:good:

Sudden screen on

Anyone experience that when charging,
the screen suddenly turns on?
I see it happens a few times during charging. Any solutions? Thanks.
Yeah, been happening to me too.
I noticed if u power off then start up again then put it to sleep, it does not wake up.
I think it might be something to do with market for some reason.

the América happening here. It's happening also when it's not charging. I don't know any solution anyway.
I have the same problem on the first day using but it went away by itself.
mine has been doing that too. at random times, the screen wakes up. perhaps the proximity sensor is too sensitive? i *think* that it only happens when i'm just a few feet away from it.
Mine has been doing it as well. I ended up doing a factory reset. So far it has not done it again. Mine was happening while not charging. Not sure if it was while charging.

OK after my factory reset it has started doing it again. Hopefully a fix will be available soon.
Adressing the problem
ADRESSING THE PROBLEM:
I have this 'bug' so now and then...... and I have found the 'problem' : it's the wifi connection between the accesspoint and the tab! I can replicate the 'problem'.
1) on my work no problem. Iconia stays asleep. Router/accesspoint : Thomson
2) at home, downstairs..... problems. Randomly it wakes up. Router/accesspoint : D-Link
3) at home, 2nd floor no problem. Device stays asleep. Accesspoint : Sitecom
So I have adressed the problem to the D-link router. Then I tried different wireless settings in the wifi setup (b/g/n connections, wpa/wpa2/no sec) no luck. The search continues.
It's a first direction. Don't search in apps or something else because I can adress the problem to the router (type).
=> please confirm

I am going to check this theory out. My main access point is a dlink. My alternative point is my older linksys. I'll post a confirmation shortly.

Unfortunately I don't think this is the issue as I have a linksys router.
I believe the issue has something to do with syncing/wifi activity as it does not happen when wifi is off.
OK after testing the two different routers I have had no issues on my linksys. The dlink was causing issues. However I am not sure it is necessarily the router as much as it may be the type of security. My linksys is set for WEP while my dlink is setup for WPA & WPA2. This could be a cause. My tab is working normal now on the WEP secured linksys. I am too lazy to change my router's security settings to verify further since it now works.

I also have a Dlink DIR 655 router and was having the same issue when my acer was connected through N mode. Switching it to use B/G fixed the screen from randomly turning on and off. Hopefully someone has a fix for this.

I will write a little app that will close down wifi when the screen is turned off and will activate it again when the screen is turned on. Maybe this will work as a temporary work around till Acer fixed the problem.

There's a setting under Wifi that allows you to have wifi turn off when the screen turns off, never when charging or never at all. When your screen comes on, so will wifi. The disadvantage of course is that you lose all notification abilities of the tablet when the screen is off as it won't get emails/ims/etc.

Ahh, ok. Sorry I haven't read where anyone has tried that.
GL then.
I too am having the same issue. I use a cisco valet router and notice yesterday that while my tab was sitting on my table the screen would radomly come on. Not exactly sure if it's an issue related to a router, and I am using just wirelss N. I wonder if there is a way to get some sort of dmesg or log or what ever the hell its called to see what the system is detecting at the time the issue arises. If there is a dev to point us in the right direction I would gladly post a log of some sort if I new how to pull it in the first place.
I think this is caused by various programs wanting to synchronize data / mail at different times while it is sleeping. My tab does this when the screen is off; if I quickly push the sleep button when it first comes up it seems to stop it for quite a while. If I have wifi off, it does not do it at all.

Defy cm10 wifi trouble

Has anoyone else trouble with wifi and cm10? I can't download more than a few mb. then the connection stalls, and I have to manually disconnect and reconnect to get it working again. I'm using a m252 with green lense as phone and a fritzbox 7390 as wifi router.
I forgot: Wifi in CM9 worked without problems...

I have the same problem, but also on stock defy, CM7 but under CM10 it occures more often. (Defy green lens)
I had trouble with a virgin media hub, but a sky one works fine. If the hub has a connect button try connecting that way instead of via entering key and it might work, did for me

hey,
yeah I had exactly the same problem as the OP described. Initially I couldn't get the wifi to connect at all, got stuck on 'obtaining IP address'. I had to cancel my wifi wpa2 security and put it back on later to resolve that issue.
(If it helps anyone - I tried out cm10 for a few days, but ran into wifi problems, rockplayer didn't work (that is supposed to be resolved by now), and couldn't get the samba share to work. So I'm switching back to cm7.2 for a little longer. cm10 looks great and it never crashed on me so I'm very impressed, and actually donated AGAIN to the developers
Just for the record, here are the results of some experiments I did:
* full wipe: didn't help
* connect via wps: didn't help
* disabled wp on routers: didn't help
* switched from wpa2 to wpa: didn't help
* disabled disconnect on bad connection: didn't help
* switched back to cm9: everything works fine
so I guess I'm stuck for now... :-/

I get the message 'Authentication problem' on my Defy running 08/08 quarx installed this morning.
I've tried restarting the Thomson router but nothing changes. Wifi worked fine on C7.1 but I must admit I didn't check it on the C10 04/08 build.
My 3G connection is pretty good so I have no plans to uninstall and will double check at the weekend, where I can get access to a BT Homehub.

Never even heard of a Thompson one. All I've tried (and all working) are BT, Sky and Virgin.

I'm using it ( CM10 08/08 quarx) too, but I have the same wifi problems (shows the phone connected to the wifi but the internet is stopped).
As far as I can see, they (stock, CM, MIUI, WIUI) work differently on each phone.

Interesting.
For the record my router is the Thomson TG585 v8 - it gets pretty mixed reviews and can clearly be bettered so perhaps I should upgrade it. I'll report on Saturday how I get on with the BT Homehub.
Also for the record the 08/08 build runs more smoothly than the 04/08 build - very nice!
I encountered some problems (disconnecting from time to time while device is not moved) but the scan connect speed increased compared to CM9. Also switching WiFi on/off is much more faster now. Very convinient when choosing between different WLANs.
me too...

I see the 08/08 build has been replaced entirely by 10/08... let's see what that brings!
Wifi using BT homehub seemed to work OK - installed 10/08 and is fine too... good upgrade!

wifi resolved
I was same problem with wifi data connectivity. After some MB dropped the the connection. (tplink wifi router). Switched the wifi speed from 300 mbps to 54 mbps. After this the wifi worked normaly, no dropped data connection, and download speed is over 10 mbps, and the upload speed is over too 10 mbps.
Defy MB525 red lens GB kernel 12.08-nightly
Sorry my bad english
Same problem here on CM10-20120812-NIGHTLY-mb525.zip with MB525 green lense. After a while wifi has no more internet connection, but device connection is shown properly on phone and AP. Switching wifi OFF/ON on phone helps.
Temporary fix, I have trouble with virgin media routers. Connect via wps button on the hub, it works, takes a while to connect but at least it works, I get authentication error when using password

I think it depends on your router.
My home wifi is sporatic when it comes to connection but at work, it's flawless. I venture it maybe hopping frequencies? When you are not getting internet/data, can you toggle off and then on in the settings and then try to open up google now? Will it refresh immediately then?
No such issue here since november 2012.

yes its been happening to me as well. Sometime when i am downloading an app, it just stuck on downloading... Youtube is also very slow. I tried some of fixes users suggested but it always goes back to being slow.
I am running Paranoid Android 3+ with Stock kernel.
EDIT: recently i switched my router from WEP to WPA2. I wonder if thats causing this issue.

I am on PA as well with stock kernel. I am thinking it's a wifi band issue. I am going to test out using 2.4 only at home to see if that works or not.
Like I said in my previous post, my work wifi (2.4GHz) works with no issues, but at home (unknown ghz right now) it stops connecting until I toggle wifi on and off. I am on WPA at both my work and home.
EDIT :
So far so good...I have been connected to my home wifi by switching the frequency to look for 2.4GHz only. No disconnect issues to report.

Wifi Connection problem.

Hey everyone a wifi problem bothers me with this phone here are the symptoms:
1- Wifi is really unstable at my house when I am connected to it (continuous disconnects and reconnects)
2- It only happens on my phone ( My iPod Laptop and tablet are all well connected)
3- It seems to work fine on CM roms.
4- It works fine when I am at my father's house and connected to it's wifi.
5- Mobile data is also fine just a wifi issue.
what causes this and is there a solution?
i9500.
I asked the exact same question in the noob thread and didnt get an answer.I never had any of that [email protected] on the s2.
I have auto network switch not ticked in setting, which improves it slightly, but its still a problem.

Random wifi drops/reconnects on stock 4.4.2

I bought my Galaxy Note 3 black month ago, it came with latest firmware installed (4.4.2). First thing what I did was factory reset, root, then connected to my home wifi network. And i immediately noticed random, but frequent (cca every 5- 10 minutes) wifi drops/reconnects. I had Galaxy S4 and S3 before and never had a single disconnect/reconnect for a year or more, so this definitely cannot be a problem with my wifi router settings.
I use hidden SSID and have full signal strength, the router is in my room.
So I started searching for a possible solutions. I found that there was a wifi bug on Android 4.3, but this is not my case because I'm on 4.4.2.
I tried changing all settings under phone "Advanced Wifi settings" but nothing helped. Currently I have "Smart network switch" disabled, "Scanning always available" disabled and "Keep wifi on" enabled, but the issue still persist. Even static IP did not help.
When I connect to my secondary home wifi network (with much weaker signal) , wifi is more stable, but disconnects/reconnects still occurs sometimes (cca once per hour).
I don't understand why Note 3 has this problem, when my Galaxy S4/S3 never had a single wifi problem before, on the same network with the same settings. Now I think this could be a hardware issue.
Please had someone this problem , is there a way on how to fix it or should I try to send the phone for repair under warranty?

You tell that the problem aren't your routers. I don't agree with u coz I had similar problems too and I solved them watching this video. I hope it helps you -> HERE.
* COUNCIL: Update your routers to the latest firmware too. You will have hardware problems in your device if that doesn't work.
What router is it? Are you using 5ghz or 2.4?
2.4GHz, Asus RT-N12 router with Tomato firmware. I think this could be related to wifi power saving mode, but don't know if the implementation in wrong on router side, or phone side. Possibly on phone because the issue persist even when I disabled power saving mode in router settings. I hope new Lollipop firmware will fix this.

I think you should flash STOCK firmware on your router. Lot of people are having problems with Tomato firmware. It's a possible solution maybe. Good luck :highfive:
