Is it possible in someway to upgrade your Samsung Galaxy S4 software to vanilla 4.3 without using a custom recovery? If not, if I install stock 4.3 on i9505, will I be able to recieve OTAs that will come in the future?

If you look here you'll find many ROMs that claim to deliver the "nexus" experience. I haven't found one that could be flashed via Odin, however. You can root your phone and create a full backup of your ROM, and then install CWM or any other recovery manager to flash the one of the nexus-experience ROMs. You can always go back to the Samsung ROMs if you don't like them.

Thanks. I found my answer in that thread. It is not safe to accept OTAs on i9505 because of the different bootloader/radio that i9505GE have.

If you flash the Platform + CSC file from the Odin firmware, yes.
But everyone must stay stock (kernel, recovery etc)

Mate, you're on XDA, why bother with OTA's? ^^

i dont get why this is? thats why there are nexus phone but other phones that you flash like this wont get the ota like a nexus?

How does this differ from say flashing the stock rom zip and a stock recovery? That way, you'd be on the stock odexed rom, with the stock kernel and the default CSC. No hassling with Odin.
So does that mean we will be able to get the OTA Updates and have a 100% GE S4?
Because my Father would really like the Google Edition S4 but he already got the Standard one and he doesn't know ANYTHING about flashing but if it would be possible to flash he could get the OTA Updates.

OTA will brick your phone atm because the bootloader can't be flashed from the GE on the 9505
so installing the android 4.2.2 google edition (not 4.3 because it is not possible with odin) you still wont receive OTA updates?

Usually ota updates doesn't flash bootloader unless there's a bootloader update ofc. So you can get updates but it's recommended to not do ota updates for your phone. Specially not when it can brick your device but it's you're choice if you want to
wrapping my head around GE
Sorry for the noobness;
I have an i9505; ever since it was announced, I was looking forward to flashing my i9505 into a GE.
Some initial roms have appeared. I just wanted to better understand some of the terms thrown around to make an informed decision;
The ROM seems to be pretty similar between all those who have thrown their hat into the ring: jamal2367, janjan, samuel2607, Hazanwar, m3dd0g, and maybe a few others. Is there any major difference between these ROMs? Q: Should all these ROMs be identical? They all have the same origin, and all are trying to go for the pure/vanilla GE experience
I think each of the ROM modders are using different kernels, or kernels slightly modified. Again; what is the official kernel for GE? is the "stock kernel" for GE the same "stock kernel" for all S4 i9505? My device is Model number SGH-I337M; Kernel v3.4.0-518267; is this the GE kernel? I know kernels can be tweaked to overclock or undervolt a phone, getting performance or better battery, respectively. I'm trying to turn my i9505 into a GE clone. Which kernel should I be looking for?
Some people have mentioned CSC. This is where I'm completely lost. From what I understand, CSC is the way phone manufacturers classify and differentiate phones model for specific countries and specific carriers. Is this correct?
Either way; how does CSC help or hurt my goal of emulating fully a GE phone? Would I need to change the currrent CSC in my phone to a second CSC? What would that accomplish?
also; someone has mentioned recovery. Should I interpret that as the bootloader? are these things related, or the actual same thing referred differently? how does the bootloader (and/or) recovery help me clone a i9595GE?
I have a question. Why are there many people working on GE Rom, and there's no actualy GE firmware (without bugs) like TW firmwares to be flashed on the phone?

there are actually pretty stable (at least the 4.2 one) however why they work on it its mostly due to its easier when you get all the libraries for the device to something they've waited for. pure AOSP can be good if you wouldn't miss the features s4 gives.

OK, heres the situation, I recently got an S4 phone here in Europe UNLOCKED.
I want to know how to install the Stock version of Android 4.3 on this phone (cureent version is 4.2.2).
* Do I have to ROOT the phone?
* Do I have to install or flash ROMs or install custom ROMs?
* My carrier is T-Mobile.
If its too too complicated or running the risk of "bricking" my phone to do this, then I would just pass and stick with the default Samsung's Android version.
Is there any detailed step-by-step guides to this?
One more VERY VERY important question. I also run Samsung KNOX for security. If I would have the Stock Google version of Android on this, will the Samsung KNOX feature be wiped out???

1. Yes, Root, download GooManager from playstore install a Custom Recovery.
2. Install the rom from the zip file via the custom recovery
3. Yes there are plenty of guides, check out youtube videos. Just search for install 4.3 Samsung S4....
4. Yes you risk bricking your device, there is always an element of RISK.
5. Samsung KNOX will not be there.

Ok, forget it. My day to day work environment MUST require the use of the KNOX feature. It is a requirement and must have it.
But thanks anyway for the help.
There is no need to root. Just flash custom recovery via Odin and follow the next steps above.

KNOX feature is Touchwiz framework... Since your workplace force you have KNOX enabled, you cannot flash 4.3 (there is no 4.3 TW ROM) nor keep root permission (KNOX). Id rather stick with stock if I were you.

Ahhhh, my fault. I think I mis giuded you all here.
Its OK if I still have the 4.2.2 version of Android. But, I would like steps on how to install the Google Stock Android version KEEPING version 4.2.2. It does not have to be 4.3 at this point.
If its very complicated, then I will buy the S4 Google Play edition in the future.
The play edition will still not have Knox

I want to ask a question. Will samsung galaxy s4 GT-I9505 be able to update to 4.3 stock android (like google play edition) via OTA? I dont want to root the phone, and i am enough patient to wait until 4.3 stock is released for this model.

No. Touchwiz version out next month. Google edition had touchwiz frame work also mind you so isn't truly stock. The two devices are completely different and the Google edition rom will not be available for this phone. Outside of custom rom that is.

Yes i think, though in 4.3 case kies it's a better option because it flashes the entire rom not an upgrade package.

If i use kies,it would be like Touchwiz or Stock pure android?
That's not possible and I don't think that you will ever be able to do that officially. Rooting seems like your only option if you want pure Android, sadly.

hi,
I want information,
if I install the upgrade to Android 4.3 on my s4 SGH-I337,

If you upgrade to the Official Samsung OTA from 4.2.2 to 4.3 there is a possibility that you will lose your root and 100% you'll lose your custom recovery. Due to the locked bootloader, you won't be able to flash a custom recovery onto your phone.
If you were on MDL and you did the update, you are now locked down...
Should read a little more, before jumping on updates.
Good luck.
Hi all, I have a galaxy S4 that is still on android 4.4.2, Build number JDQ39.I337UCUAMDB. What is the proper way to get this updated to KitKat so that I can use towelroot?

If you're on MDB, you can use motochopper to root and have a true custom recovery to run ROMs like Cyanogenmod, Paranoid Android, Slim Bean, and other AOSP ROMs. If you update you're limited to touchwiz ROMs of only the same system version you have.

I assume you meant Android 4.2.2...
But yeah, your on MDB so this what I could recommend...
(Optional) First, use Odin and update your phone to MDL using these files. I can't recall if MDB works the same way as MDL (via Loki), it doesn't hurt to update to MDL though.
Secondly, after you have successfully flashed MDL follow this guide to obtain root, install a custom recovery, and learn how to use the Loki exploit.
Whatever you do, DO NOT let your device update to MF3, MK2, NB1,etc as you will lose the ability to run non-TouchWiz based roms.
Personally, I'd recommend just going with pure CyanogenMod after you get your device ready to go. You may want to do a little more research however, my experience with pre-MF3 devices is limited.
