This is not intended to be a bug-sharing thread, report them if you wish, but I'm sure there will be entire threads devoted to this, so keep this in mind when posting.

Noob question though ..... I am on a custom ROM. I have CWM recovery.
I thought I couldnt update OTA if my TF was rooted ? or is it that I have the custom recovery that prevents this ?
I can flash back to stock easily - its removing CWM and unrooting that looked to be the more techie issue.
With what you are saying is there an easy way, once I have reverted to stock ROM, to revert to stock recovery without losing root ? Or do i even need to revert to stock ROM ??

Can update if rooted, but need to be on a stock ROM and stock Recovery image in order to successfully install. Download the 8.2.3.5 US recovery file located here :http://theunlockr.com/2011/11/28/how-to-unroot-and-remove-cwm-recovery-on-asus-transformer/, flash it through CWM and you have now overwritten your CWM and gone back to stock. Ready to update from there. Cheers!

so what is the procedure to update? Rename it, put it in microsd root and reboot into recovery?
another question, i cannot root with nachoroot, so is it possible to root with 1-click root?

That might work, I don't know exactly because I got the FOTA pushed to my device and updated through the 'official' update process. I honestly have no idea how the dlpkgfile is even packaged, if it is CWM flashable or requires stock recovery etc., honestly my first time fooling with capturing the OTA files.

Do I understand correctly that I only have to do Step 7 of the tutorial? and then install ICS (regular update process)?
I am rooted and I have CWM (no custom ROM)

So first impressions luna? Might as well start a discussion to keep the post on top and visible.
Did you run Spark? If so how does it compare?

Unfortunately I never did get around to trying the latest Spark, I saw the complaints about touchscreen issues and decided it might be best to wait for Paul to work it out, but Asus finally got the upper hand on him!
Seems a treat, but I expected as you can see I've been running CM9 on my epic for about 3 weeks now. Much snappier, generic comments that have already been posted- but not explored completely yet, too busy helping others get their own ICS since the update came in to be selfish and sign off yet
Steven, I'm not sure which step 7 you are referring to but you will need a stock recovery in order to flash the file. CWM will flash files that have been repacked for CWM usually, and OTA updates install from the cache partition so CWM will not be able to install the OTA. CWM can flash it manually, I THINK (not sure if it needs to be repackaged for that to occur or not), but CWM will not install the OTA through the normal OTA process.

I was refering to step 7 on the Unlocker page you pointed to:

So in short only replace the recovery as explained in pojnt 7 (and 8) of that page and then do a regular system update to ICS.
No need to unroot??
Will this keep my apps and settings? I do have Titanium so I can do a backup and restore that way.

Yes, your apps and data should remain intact, and that is correct, you only need to flash the recovery back to stock if you are already on a stock ROM. As of right now, only US and TW firmware versions are getting the OTA pushed to their device, but if you are not one of these you can manually flash to these stock ROMs via CWM if need be. But yes, if you are stock + root + CWM, you only need to flash over CWM back to stock. Root is fine to keep and all data will be saved (it is an official update, people would be irate if it wiped their data you know!)

Well I did the update with root disabled with rootkeeper but now rootkeeper will not restore Root.
I guess I should of read thi before updating

If you are SBK1 device you can flash CWM via NVFlash, use CWM to flash SU binary from ChainsDD (located HERE ) and then flash the stock recovery if you so choose to return to stock recovery (in case any patches or incremental updates come out you may need this if you want to stay stock ICS).
ONE MORE THING BEFORE I GO GUYS;
I just noticed that ICS brings a new recovery as well, so the update will overwrite your recovery, I assume it will do this if you figure out how to flash via CWM so be prepared for that. Any devs will want to work on removing the recovery blob from the patch file before releasing as a CWM flashable zip. My 2 cents. See you guys in a few hours/days, depending on how addicted I get to ICS.

After I updated to ICS, OTA Rootkeeper gave me the option to Restore root. Under the status section, Device rooted and Root permission granted were both unchecked until I used the Restore root option.

problem to update to 4.3 with TWRP installed

Hi guys. I have a small question and maybe a problem. I have Nexus 4 rooted with unlocked boot loader, and TWRP installed on it. And as I think with stock rom, because only done everything to root, but nothing else.
Now I have a problem: phone offering to update to 4.3. I press update. It updating and restarting, but after restart it loads TWRP. And what should I do next to finish update? Because I don't know how to make it finish updating with TWRP? What should I do with TWRP to do so? I will be very thankful for any help. Because twice was making update, but still on 4.2.2.

You need to flash the stock recovery because you can't update via OTA with a custom recovery.

You can actually OTA with TWRP.. The device should load into TWRP and complete the update. After the update you will lose TWRP and root

I have seen this in 4.2.2 but not on 4.3. Could you please elaborate a bit more? How did you accomplish this with all these new security policies in 4.3? Thanks.

This is incorrect. The best way to update is download the ota zip from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2145848
Go to twrp recovery flash the ota zip then SU zip v1.51 reboot done. Now you got 4.3 with root and you won't lose your recovery

Sorry if it sounded incorrect to you but what you just suggested, although it works, it is not an OTA update per definition as far as I know. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

When you get the notification saying there is a update on your phone you select it and it downloads flashes the ota zip. What I said is the same thing except you download it and flash it your self and by doing it this way you can flash the SU zip at the same time and not lose root or recovery.

Thanks, your post above made me read that thread you linked and while it works, it's not a real OTA (notification from Google or OEMs), but let's not fall into semantics here, the thing is it works and does the job pretty much like a real OTA. Thanks again, I learned (and downloaded) something new today

The zip in the link is from Google. When someone got the notification on there phone they posted the link to the zip it would be the same file if you received it on your phone

I know my friend I'm just trying to say that the affirmation "yes, you can update via OTA using a custom recovery" is not valid for someone getting the notification which is the common scenario for most people. Anyways, it's all good :thumbsup:

Struggling to get 4.3 OTA to work, please help.

Apologies if this is a really stupid question, I have tried to search for a solution and found a few replies to other posts but I still don't really understand how to solve my problem.
My phone is rooted, running stock rom and had franco kernel on it.
I wanted to install the 4.3 OTA update so flashed the stock kernel and tried to update, but it failed saying "warning no file_contextsVerifying.. etc etc". I didn't write down the whole error message as I thought that I'd be able to recreate it if needed by trying to update again.
However, I now have stock rom and kernel but am still on 4.2.2 and when I check for updates it tells me that my phone is up to date.
How can I get to stock everything and update OTA without losing any of my apps/data and remaining rooted? Thanks for any help!

You need the stock recovery as well, without it the OTA won't run (has been mentioned hundreds of times before, see the OTA thread in General for more info)

You do if you want to do the process normally (ie. download OTA and flash without having to manually choose it in recovery). And that link goes to the Franco kernel thread, which I'm pretty sure has no bearing here

You can use a custom recovery to do it normally to when you get the notification just click on it. The reason I posted that link is because he had Franco kernel which changes a system file the link shows you how to change it back

So if I'm happy downloading the update on my computer and flashing it via cwm, I wouldn't need stock recovery? Does that mean that in my phones current state (stock rom, stock kernel and cwm) I could just do that to get to 4.3 and wouldn't lose any apps/data? Sorry if the answer to that is obvious...it just didn't like trying to install the ota update.

IMHO if you want to update via OTA you're better off being 100% stock, it will unroot you and there have been issues re-rooting 4.3 unless you know what you're doing. You also need the stock kernel to flash the OTA so you'll need to flash that back before hand. Easiest thing to do is back up your apps, flash the 4.3 factory image, re-root and restore your apps/data

I don't want to have issues re-routing so I guess my safest bet is to just stick with what I have right now?

Why do you need OTA update when you can get the stock ROM in flashable zip file? All features are remain the same for stock ROM. Search and download it in the Development sections.

I am rooted and received the OTA notification yesterday. You 'SHOULD' be able to install if ALL you did was root. However, if you applied any mods that made changes to the system, the OTA will fail.

This is your best bet if you want to run 4.4. You'll need to install a custom recovery to flash the zip files. All the files and instructions are here:

Did you read the linked post?
First step after installing custom recovery is to wipe data/factory reset, so yes, you will lose your settings.

What I would like is to update to kitkat without losing my data.
I have the bootloader unlocked and the phone rooted, but when I go to recovery mode I get "No command" screen (is that normal?).
I was thinking of getting the phone unrooted, then update through the OTA, then root it again, just for making sure I don't break anything, but the "No command" screen does not look very good...
On the other hand, Would I lose my data if I "unroot" the phone?

To unroot, all you need to do is go into SuperSu, disable root, uninstall the app and then reboot the phone.
If all you have done is root the phone, and didn't modify anything else, then the OTA update 'SHOULD' install without a problem.
You can go to Android Police and download the OTA files and flash them via ADB, or you can just wait for the OTA to be pushed to your device.
If you decide to do it the manual way, there is one additional step you must take to ensure to keep your data I believe.

One last thing: I'm not pretty sure the only thing I modified was the rooting. I did not install any zip to modify my stock version, but there is something weird. I will explain:
At first I had 4.2.2, then I rooted and installed CWM. When 4.3 was released I got the OTA update correctly but I lost the root, so I rooted it again, this time without CWM.
Is the "No command" screen what is supposed to appear when I go to the recovery mode from fastboot menu? Or I would get a default recovery mode program?
If everything is right I will unroot for getting the OTA, but if not, I'm afraid I will have to flash CWM and the stock version, loosing my settings...
EDIT: Ok, I've just realized to get into stock system recovery I have to press VolUp and Power buttons once I'm in the 'No Command' screen, so I'm pretty sure I don't have problems installing the OTA update. Thank You!!!

Glad I could help. In the future, as long as you don't modify the system by flashing any modifications, you should be able to get the OTA update to install. Root doesn't affect this, and if you're worried about it, you can always uninstall it.
I opted to update using the stock zip files that were posted above and it worked just fine for me.

I have the april patches and this is for the may patches. I tried downloading the incremental zip and flashing it in twrp but that didnt work. Can i sideload it with adb? Do I need to remove root before doing that?

I just faced a similar situation. I was still on the stock launch image (MDA89D), but rooted and using Xposed. I just never took the time before then to update to a newer build, but finally wanted to.
I was going to sideload the most recent OTA update manually via ADB. Then I realized that the Nexus Root Toolkit by WugFresh (link here) should work for that. I performed a nandroid backup, attempted to unroot via SuperSu (which failed), disabled my Xposed modules uninstalled Xposed, then used the Sideload OTA Update option in the toolkit's Advanced Utilities to install the latest OTA (downloaded from Google's site here).
I was a little doubtful that it would work for me on the first try, but it did! I re-rooted using the Toolkit, got things re-enabled, and it's all good.
Also, if you use Xposed, the GravityBox module allows you to suppress notifications, so you could get rid of the update one.

The best way to flash an OTA while your phone is rooted and has TWRP, is by installing it through the FlashFire app. Easy and extremely reliable.

You must do the following:
1. Return to complete stock - that means get rid of root and TWRP. Best way to do that is download the factory image from Google, extract the boot, recovery, and system images from the factory image, and Flash those, for example: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img Don't flash data.img so you can keep your data.
2. OTAs depend on stock recovery to load, so now that you're back to stock, you have 2 choices. You can simply boot your phone normally, wait for the notification for the update, install it, and you're done - or, you can access android's stock recovery and side load the OTA zip using ADB. Good luck

I performed a nandroid backup, attempted to unroot via SuperSu (which failed), disabled my Xposed modules uninstalled Xposed, then used the Sideload OTA Update option in the toolkit's Advanced Utilities to install the latest OTA (downloaded from Google's site here).
I was a little doubtful that it would work for me on the first try, but it did! I re-rooted using the Toolkit, got things re-enabled, and it's all good.
Also, if you use Xposed, the GravityBox module allows you to suppress notifications, so you could get rid of the update one.

I forgot to mention that I also had TWRP recovery installed. The result was like it is with a normal OTA update, as none of my data/apps/settings were affected. Worked like a charm!

I tried doing it via the app but it doesnt work. It says its installing then reboots and im still on same version. I used Default settings in the app.

Pretty Sure. My build is MHC19Q and i used the incremental zip from https://android.googleapis.com/packa...rom-MHC19Q.zip which i got from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63049054&postcount=3

I just download the monthly update and use fastboot without the wipe option and it does the incremental.
I've done this for the last three months, including this one.
Once you are rooted and have TWRP, just use fastboot for updates.

I guess you can call it that.
The bottom line is, once you root or install TWRP; the only reliable method is some sort of flash.
If you rooted the phone manually and didn't use some one click tool, then this should be easy.
I shy away from the one click tool because if the tool is not updated or becomes unsupported, what then.

I also avoid using any toolkits. Yes I know they are fast and easy, and of course someone's hardwork. But I like to everything manual, same as you. :highfive:

I usually like to do things like that manually, because I like to know how things work. But I was under a bit of a time crunch at that point, so decided to try the Nexus Root Toolkit. Though I do understand the procedure of sideloading OTA updates via ADB, from researching and reading on the forums here.
Anywho, I hope you are able to get it going OP.
