[I screwed up!] Screen always on after root (CF Auto) - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey!
Have an unlocked Swedish S4 and yesterday I decided to root and clean a few Samsung bloat. Everything went OK but my screen is always on (which of course is no good...). I've tried rebotting etc but nothing works. If I press the power button the screen is still on but if I hold the power button I can restart, shutdown etc.
Any ideas at all?
Thanks!

Well seems like...an issue with the auto root....best options now....since you do have root...is to go for a new ROM....or try flashing an official system and rerooting....I recommend the 1st option ....but you decide....good luck

Thanks for your reply. Could it be an app? I installed a few after the root-process. I have tried to uninstall them but no luck...

I've done this:
1. Unroot (from SU)
2. Reboot
3. Wipe cache
4. Reboot
5. Hard reset
6. Reboot
Still doesn't work...

Very annoying bug on 4.0.3 LPY (not found in other topics)

Hallo guys, i just flashed N7000XXLPY via ODIN. Everything worked well but I have one big issue (that wasn't discussed in "bugs" thread).
Whatever I select, Swipe Unlock, Face recognition, Draw pattern, PIN code or whatever, it reacts the same: never requires swipe, PIN, pattern or else for unlocking. If i press briefly the power button, the display light switchs off. If I press again any other button (volume, home or power), the display light turns on but never asks for any method of unlocking. What to do? Does anyone else have the same issue?
Not happening here. Try a hard-reset after flashing a new ROM.
I have swipe unlock by default and it works. Screen does not power on when you press volume button, only if you press power or home button.
Thanks vcespon for your quick response. I tried hard reset via "Volume UP + Home + Power" method, I wiped cache, I tried hard reset via changing the CSC, I restored it to factory settings from menu, nothing worked. Any other oppinion?
LE: I found another issue, maybe is related with the first one. When I want to switch off the phone, I press (for 2 seconds) the power button and it just go to Samsung logo and swhitches off, without asking me those two questions about what I want to do (to can choose beetween flight mode, silent and power off) and if I'm sure that I want to power off the phone.
LE2: Tryed also Indian version (N7000DDLP8), no improvements.

I already did it, not knowing that I might brick it.
Thanks for the advice, I won't do it in the future till a safe official Kernel will be released.
Any solve to the issue that I have?
After another search I can see that there are others that encounter the same problem, here is the topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1651005
Hello Sir
Sir i am facing the same problem i have bought galaxy not n7000 and the problem i am facing is i have updated it to official ics indian rom and now i am not able to activate screen lock function and if i hold the lock buttton for 2-3 seconds the phone gets switched off, is it because of the kernel problem or anything else, i tried giving it to the samsung store but they dint fixed it. P.S i was not able to update my mobile through Kies as it said "this device can not be updated through kies" please help...
I just found a fast way to fix this problem.
1. Root your device.
2. Use this solution:
Download from Market "Terminal Emulator"
Open it and type this commands:
su
echo -n ON > /efs/imei/keystr
sync
reboot
100% works !

so basicly this happen. i updated my samsung s4 and after the instalation hes gone,,, he keeps restarting at the first samsung logo screen, vibrate then resets , i tryd that volume+ menu + power button and clear chache and factory reset but it kinda did nothing
im new at this android stuff so if someone got any ideas how to help me that would be great !
sorry if there is another post on the forum here with the same problem but i didint see them ,,,
any help would be good ! thanks in advance
type if you need more info
Hi Zarg00
I had the same problem as you a few days ago! Nothing seemed to work, wheter I tried wiping the cache/dalvik chache or doing a factory reset.
With Odin I managed to get it back to life again.
Don't worry, it's easier to repair as you might think. =)
You should have your original Samsung usb cable ready.
Unbricking Samsung Galaxy S4 by Installing the Official Firmware:
If wiping the data/factory reset, and cache partition does not help you, or you are not able to boot into the Android System or ClockworkMod recovery on your Galaxy S4, you can try installing the official firmware on your phone. Read the following guide that will help you find the correct firmware for your Galaxy S4 and install it safely.

Unfortunatly I can't post you the link directly, because my post count isn't high enough.
But try searching on google "droidviews how to unbrick galaxy s4" and it should be the second post with the very well written tutorial.
After you are done with it, your device should work correctly again.
You will lose your recovery and root though.
Good luck and report back, if it worked! :good:
Maybe not the first thing to do but have you tried flashing in the stock rom with odin and then do the updates again?
Sincerely, Joakim
im gettin Official Firmware now, so i think XD its 1.6 gb so its gonna take a while,
i realy hope this is gonna work
In my case i even had to restore the PIT, too. But try just flashing the official firmware before that.
Yeah, downloading the firmware can take a while. You can download the newest Version [I9505XXUBMGA Jelly Bean (4.2.2)] on google drive as well.
Just delete the "_" after https: in the link -> https:_//docs.google.com/file/d/0B7DKa-PuA5IlcVY2MGtMT1ZJMHM/edit
Drive lets you download faster than hotfile.
Its the DBT version though, so you might need to change your language from german to whatever you want at the first start.
But since your galaxy is still able to boot, the chances are really good that it will work well again after you have flashed the official firmware!
im kinda stuck at this
Boot your Galaxy S4 into Android System Recovery mode: hold Volume Up+Home+Power keys together till the screen turns up and the Samsung logo blinks twice. Just as you see a green Android bot, release the Power button but keep Volume Up and Home keys pressed till you see the recovery menu (see below). In recovery mode use the volume keys to scroll and power button to select options:
Go to “wipe data/factory reset” option and wipe it.
Then “wipe cache partition”.
Finally, go to “reboot system now” and select it.
i cant go to recovery mode, i can see little blue letters in upper left corner but phone resets -.-
any hint ?
Which recovery are you using? The "official" recovery did not work very well on my device. It just crashed when I tried to wipe cache partition.
Try flashing CWM Recovery for GT-i9505 with Odin.
uhm im confuzed, can you walk me throu i kinda dont get that "odin" program
dunno what to do with that files you show me :S
Don't worry, it is not that hard. =)
I guess you already flashed the official firmware with Odin, right?
To install cwm recovery follow these steps:
1. Make sure that your device is at least 50% charged
2. Power off your S4. To make sure that it is really off pull out the battery for half a minute and put it back in.
3. Start Odin3 on your PC.
4. Download the recovery file (link in the post I made before ^^) you should choose the one i marked with red in the screenshot below.
5. Okay, you have the recovery file and odin3 ready. In Odin, click the box before "PDA" and than click on "PDA" and choose the file you just downloaded. It should look like in the screenshot below (sorry, that it's in german, but I thought it might help you )
6. Now we have to prepare your Galaxy S4. Press and hold "Volume down" + "home" and then press "Power" to get into download mode. It will ask you, if you are sure. Just press "volume up" once.
7. Connect your phone to your PC with the USB Cable. Odin should recognize your device. Just make sure, that the ID:COM port turns blue.
8. Click on start and wait till your device reboots and Odin shows you the PASS! message. You can disconnect your S4 from the PC now.
9. And now try to get into recovery mode again by pressing "volume up" + "home" + "power". Sometimes you don't even have to press the home button, just try what works best for you. Release the power button as soon as you see the logo, but keep the "volume up" button pressed until you are in recovery mode.
If you can enter recovery mode again (and i'm crossing my fingers, that you can ^^) just continue with the tutorial from droidviews and wipe data/factory reset and after that cache partition.
I hope that helps! :fingers-crossed:
this works, thanks,
i did "Go to “wipe data/factory reset” option and wipe it.
Then “wipe cache partition”.
Finally, go to “reboot system now” and select it."
well that whas kinda the last thing i needed to do, but its still the same,
he shows me Samsung galaxy s4 gt - i9505 logo and keeps reseting ,,,
so this didint fix my problem
Damn.
Did you also flash the PIT files? I would do the whole process again, but this time follow "How to unbrick S4 by Flashing Stock Firmware and PIT File".
If that doesn't work as well, I guess it is some hardware error. The good thing is, that you did not lose any warranties by following the tutorials and you can return your phone to the shop and claim a repair.
so basicly i did all over again its still the same phone keeps resetting
but in recovery mode i noticed after i do this
"Go to “wipe data/factory reset” option and wipe it.
Then “wipe cache partition”.
Finally, go to “reboot system now” and select it."
when i want to reboot it says " Root access is missing. Root device ? "
basicly there are lots of
NO
NO
NO
NO
YES - Root device (/system/xbin/su)
i hope this helps you so you can help me :S

gonna test it for a while and post here again if all works fine
aaaaannnnnddd nothing, it resets
im back at the beginning ,,,, he whas working fine for about 10 min then he just shuts down and resets all the time ,,,,
Hey Zarg00 =)
Did you restore the PIT file as well this time? You phone shows a really strange behavior. O__O
I have found a thread here, which might hopefully help you [Guide] How to unbrick your phone.
Sometimes flashing files with Odin won't work the first time and you have to try it multiple times.
If that all doesn't work, then I guess it is not a software but an hardware issue. :/
well i made it work, and its fine now, but it restarts sometimes ,,,
also Kies cant see my phone, its stuck on connecting ,,,, i can browse it throu My Computer i see it there
Cool! It finally works now? Did you do anything different or just the steps from the tutorial again?
Kies never really worked for me. Sometimes it didn't recognized my device at all.

I need help with my SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB 4 (SM-230NU) 8 GB running kitkat. When screen goes off due to inactivity or right side power button is pressed. it does not turn back on. There is no way to get the screen back with out doing hard restart by holding the power button for abt 10 seconds. Once it restarts it works fine without any issues until it goes to stand by mode or i press the power button to make it go to sleep.
when i press the left power button to wake it up the screen is all black , but audio works when i tab on screen.
i have already tried the factory reset from the settings menu. i save also tried the hard reset by holding the home+Up Volume+power button, but problem is still there.

Have you tried a factory reset and wiping dalvik cache (caution, this will wipe it clean , so backup your stuff)
There are 2 ways I would prefer you to maybe fix it.
Way nr. 1 (recommended) before you so this, download the stock rom or any other rom (must be exactly for your device!) you want to flash and put it on your SD card. Now you need a custom recovery! If you have any important data, you better want to backup. In your custom recovery wipe dalvik cache, cache, data, and system (WARNING THIS WILL DELETE ALL, EVEN ANDROID). From there flash the ROM you want to flash. If that doesn't work, it's probably a hardware error.
2. If you don't have a custom recovery, then use the stock recovery that comes with the device. From there you can factory reset. Maybe that will work better than the factory reset in the settings.
Hi,
is this tab rooted?
if so, set display time out to 30 minutes and in developer settings set enable always on when plugged in.
then install terminal emulator from play store.
start terminal emulator and run
su
then run
mount -o rw,remount /system
then run
chmod 644 /system/media/*qmg
you may also need to run
chmod 644 /system/media/*spi
and for good measure
chmod 755 /system/media
and reboot, then power off screen and see if you can power back on.
this happens sometimes when a custom bootanimation is installed incorrectly on a stock samsung rom.
Keep it mind this is just a guess by way of a solution, but your problem is similar to a problem i had when installing/modifying stock samsung boot animation

Am I screwed?

I just followed this tutorial https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/development/h918-recowvery-unlock-v20-root-shell-t3490594
I got root installed TWRP- I did everything, and then I went to flash a ROM and during the setup (AROMA setup)
It just froze I never finished, it it just froze when selecting an option the ROM in question is (WETA 5.0.7 [16th.Jun]
Now what else was there to do.. i waited for a bit and it still was just frozen.
Before I even flashed the ROM I backed up my device.
When I went to reboot. Thinking everything is gonna be fine.
Its now stuck on the LG (Life's Good) screen.
I can't get into TWRP, nor the bootloader...
The only thing I got to was a screen that showed me my IMEI number and another number apart form that I haven't had any success.
Am I doing something wrong? Please help?! Thanks in advance.
1. pull the battery
2. Hold power and volume down
until the lg logo appears
3. Immediately when the lg logo
appears release and repress
the power key
4. You will see a factory reset
screen use the volume keys to
scroll to yes and press power
to select another screen will
appear select yes and hit
power again there may be a
third screen I don't remember
but if there is just hit yes again
5. This does not factory reset it
accesses recovery which in
your case is TWRP so in a
minute you will see the TWRP
logo once you're there restore
your backup or reflash the
ROM.

Ok so I'm just tripping. Thank you very much its so weird with the power button at the back like that. Thanks a million!

Rooted phone stuck on encryption

Hi all need help. I started encryption on my rooted S80 and read later that I needed to remove root beforehand. Now it is stuck in the encryption padlock for a few hours. I tried restarting and couldn't get out of this mode and cannot enter recovery. Any advise?

I am in the same boat. Any luck fixing this?
Hi guys, I stumbled on this thread on Friday 12-01-2018 cos I ran into the exact same problem. I was shocked no one responded with a solution. Well after scrambling with trials and guesses, I found one that worked. if you haven't already solved this problem, the simplest solution is to do the following:
Please note: This works for already rooted devices running TWRP recovery
1. Allow the phone to run out of charge while stuck on the encryption screen
2. Plug the phone to charge up without pressing the power button
3. Unplug the power cord and press Vol up+ bixby + power button at together to boot into recovery mode
4. Press Backup (yes you can still backup your data to external SD)
5. After backup, go back to the main TWRP menu and press WIPE
6. Press FORMAT DATA
7. Reboot the phone (you'll receive a warning that No OS Installed... this is good cos it means you've successfully formatted the phone)
8. On rebooting, the phone is just stuck on the Samsung Galaxy Logo (powered by Android) - this means you have successfully formatted the phone
9. Remove your external SD, connect it to your PC and copy your firmware into it, then re-insert it into your phone
10. Reboot to recovery using Step 3 above
10. Reinstall your firmware, allow your phone to boot up completely. This will take a while as it is a fresh install
11. Reboot into recovery and restore your data.
Hope this helps. It worked for me.

Hi All,
thanks to all for this question and the answer...
Please clarify me to get sure:
I've S8 with Oero (Stuck ROM) --> rooted (TWRP + Magisk)
Is it possible to set on the encryption?
If not, is there any other way/ROM/TWRPs to makes it possible?

Hi,
yes it is possible, i did it long times ago so i don't remember exactly (stock + encryption + twrp + root with magisk) but what you need to do is to set the encryption first and then root or you'll be stuck on encryption if you'r root first
What now?

Hey capsycum,
Thanks for the answer.
Well I did have the enc on before root, but as I knew some issues with OnePlus Phone I deactivated the enc before rooting.
Now the Phone is rooted - without having the enc on before.
So the question is if there is any way to activate the encryption - posthumously?
Cheers,
?
...anyone an idea?
?
Hey Guys,
I'd very appreciate, if anyone could clear the situation - or better - suggest a solution?!
Thanks

It is not true... I've tried any possibility...
Even the way to:
1. set on Enc.
2. Install TWRP, then directly to Recovery, install no-verity and then install Magisk
3. back to Download-Mode and install the self extracted stock recovery (from org. stock image)...
Did not help... (After first pass-phrase request of booting, it gives back the integrity error and never asks for pass again)
So... Any help is welcome!
