[Q] S4 questions please help
Hi all I'm new to android and have been reading a ton
But have a few question?
1. I have a bell s4 Smg-i337 with latest firmware (I believe moto chopper will not work)
But think cw autoroot root method works
Am I correct or how can I root with latest firmware
2. If I install GE rom will it use less storage
(Right now Touchwiz only give my phone like 9.2gb but I read the GE editions s4 doesn't use up as much space)
So will flashing a rom free up space ?
3. Is removing bloat ware bad previously I would just freeze the app but I'm curious about removing it (I read somewhere that if u remove it it screws up ur phone for updates ?
Is that true?
That's all for now thank you

All 3 of your questions can be found in previous threads already. There's a thread about what bloatware is safe to remove. Also a thread about which ROM is better for space and speed. And rooting

My brains is a little overloaded with info just trying to get some basic answer to some question?
1. I personally don't know
2. No all the partitions will remain the same. To repartition could be dangerous and is often best left alone.
3. The stock ROM scans itself at every boot to make sure everything is there and a padlock boot loader animation will appear. Uninstalling the wrong apps could delete necessary files for other apps and features so they are best frozen on stock, that is what I believe personally.
Ps next time use the search function.

Wait you have bell s4 i337? Not i337m? I was under the impression that only at&t and sprint have i337 :/
Anyways yes cw auto root is the way to go. But make sure your build doesn't end in MF3. I think at&t i337 have a locked boot loader, just be careful that you don't flash Roms if you have mf3. However you can still root using cw root even with a locked boot loader.
How did u manage to get an i337 s4 on bell network?
A custum ROM will give u about 9.7gb of free space. The main reason why people like to flash Roms is to get rid of TW, no bloatware, snappy phone, battery life, and sweet features eg halo))).
Good luck!!

Thank you all for the help
Little confused about question 2
Tylorw1 says portions stay the same with installing custom rom
But eagertolearn say custom rom will give u 9.7gb of free space
So which is it ?
Does custom rom repatrion to use only what it needs or does it just replace the rom in the memory Samsung used up?

9.7 is what it is partitioned on stock, the other 5.5gb is the system partition so it is one and the same. All it does is install the ROM in the partition, not repartition.

Lastly I was aware of making sure of deleting bloatware and making sure it safe to remove
But no one answered if removing it affect updating
1. Say an update came out and I remove a bunch of bloatware apps. Will I have any issues updating ?
2. What do most people like to do just freeze or remove.
3. Is there any benefit of removing over freezing ? Since u don't gain any space with removing does it have any advantage?
??
Any answers to previous post?

Have searched there is talk about these topic but don't answer my specific question
Instead of constantly saying search the forum (WHICH I HAVE DONE)
It would take 1 minute to just answer my questions if you know the answer
That's why I have taken to the forums for help
Seems I'm it picked the wrong forum to take to as all the staff does in here instead of taking 1 minute to answer a question
They constantly tell ur to search (WHICH again I have done and learned a lot Now I'm at a point I have a few "specific" question that I can't seem to find on the forum

And if you actually tried reading and learning the three answers you are looking for (and much much more) is readily available. I am sorry to waste your valuable time trying to help you to actually find the answers you need.

Very helpful. you must be very knowledgable to be a mod and instead of helping you just constantly say use search button!
I don't mean to start a fight and will stop. I just wanted to share a users opinion not ending to be rude.. Clearly take wrong way sorry
So if you are able to answer some specific question that would be appreciated if not then please dont clog my thread and allow another android friend to help

I will try and help - this is just an attempt and not proven
1. Say an update came out and I remove a bunch of bloatware apps. Will I have any issues updating ?
-use common sense, removing AT&T Family Map or YouTube probably will not have any impact. Removing something that you dont have a clear definition of like for example BandService or CapabilityManagerService may cause serious issues.
2. What do most people like to do just freeze or remove.
-I doubt most people vote on such things. I freeze myself, if something doesnt work, I can unfreeze easier than I can go and find the replacement app out on the internet
3. Is there any benefit of removing over freezing ? Since u don't gain any space with removing does it have any advantage?
-remove = gain space at expense of if you need it in the future, you will need to make a task of it
-freeze = dont reclaim space but have safety net of immediately unfreezing and getting back functionality
Suggestion: How about freezing until you have a space issue, then deal with what to do at that point?
Before you freeze/remove, google the app first and see if some poor [email protected]@rd is trying figure out how to fix what he just eliminated
Good luck - have fun - be careful

Another reason to freeze is if you remove an app and yet another updates comes your way, the app will be placed back on your phone. If that app already existed and was frozen, will remain frozen with the next update. At least that's what happens when you update a ROM.

I've had my Nexus 7 a few days now and I am noticing ads all over the place. So, I am thinking about rooting my device so I can put one of the ad blockers on there.
1. Do you recommend it?
2. When Android brings new updates to their OS, does the root stay there or prevent you from upgrading in the normal way? Do you have to reroot each time they do an update?
3. Can I preserve all my data on the device as it currently is or will it get lost on my rooting escapade?
Thanks,

Erica Renee. Questions should be in the Questions and Answers Not General..
1 - I surely recommend. For me, root is the best thing you can do in Nexus 7, mainly because 3 apps i can´t live without now:
- PPP widget (3g modem working on Nexus 7) : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.draisberghof.pppwidget
- Stickmount (Any flash drive working on Nexus 7, i use it to keep all my emulators roms, and videos and it´s perfect!) : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.stickmount
- USB/BT Joystick Center 6 (it works with almost EVERY gamepad in the market, be it USB or wireless) and the best thing is that you can map buttons and analog sticks to use as touch controls, so it works with almost all games and emulators for android. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.poke64738.usbjoy
2 - There´s a way to keep your root before updating, search for ROOTKEEPER, easy as walk...
3 - You can preserve all your data. JUST DO IT NOW!
Without adding toooo much to the spam on the forums I'll answer some of your questions.
Should you root? imo yes, if like me you want to use otg and be able to dim the screen enough that night time use doesn't blind you.
Do updates mess it up? yes but with the likes of Wugs toolkit it's easy to root again.
Your user data is easy to back up and easy to reload if for any reason you lose it.

1) Rooting is an individual decision, but there is no real reason not to - outside of personal preference. Sure you could do something stupid and break your device, but 99% of the time it's easily recoverable. If you want to use some nice and very hand apps like Titanium Backup, you need root. If you want to run custom software (kernels, etc.), you might not technically need root, but you will need to do almost all the steps necessary to get there (unlock bootloader, install custom recovery, etc.), so you might as well root it to. The fact that the OS updates come quickly on a Nexus device is irrelevant. While the stock OTA updates will remove root, it won't undo the other things, which makes restoring root (especially with a "root keeper" tool) take about 10 seconds.
2) Yes, OTA updates will remove root. But, as I mentioned above, the fix process is trivial, so that alone shouldn't make any difference in your decision. Having root by itself will NOT break OTA updates. However, modifying other files on the system (framework, system apks, etc.) will. But you can always just reflash the full newer version or make backups of the modified files.
3) The first step of the "rooting" process, or the process to do anything custom, will require you to unlock your bootloader. If you have not done this yet, it WILL force wipe you tablet. No way around that. But once you unlock your bootloader the first time, you're good to go and don't need to worry about it in the future. Additionally, once that's done, using tools like TiBu and custom recovery nandroid backups make restoring your data MUCH easier then stock options.
In my opinion, rooting is a definite benefit, especially on devices like the Nexus7. I would recommend it for anyone who likes to play with their devices and maximize their capabilities. But it's up to you. There really is no downside, and it can easily be undone if you want later.
But as the other poster said OP, you need to read the existing threads/stickies in the future before asking questions that were asked and answered already.
The OP question was about whether to root his device or not, then you shot him down by saying he should have done a search and provided a link to how to root his devices. Some thread spun off to other topic but from the thread heading you will not know if you do a search.
I know that search should be done first, but not unless I can't comprehend the English language, that thread will not be the goto thread to answer that question.
I myself try to search for things I have seen before and find it hard to get back to the same thread, we are all here to learn and discover from each other and you don't need to put people down on how you answer their question, not unless they're Apple fanboy (pun intended).

I agree, while it may be a bind for the regular contributors to answer the same questions over and over people like me learn a lot from others asking questions.
I could use the search function and learn for sure, however how would I search for a question that hasn't arose for me yet? Just reading posts is the best way to learn general knowledge, if people didn't ask questions then I'm unlikely to go searching random things in stale posts.

As simple as if you want root apps like ad block, then root it.
There are no risk and you can always back to stock.
For me, a non rooted android is useless.

There are plenty of sociopaths on forums. I just ignore them.
Asking questions is what makes a community. Fresh discussion is where it is at, else we would all go to blog posts and read articles on a topic. "Hey, why don't you Google your answer?" Nutters.
So I finally pulled the trigger and followed the instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277480
I am using Shabby's MDL and am absolutely floored by the huge difference in size differences from MDC to MDL. However I am curious about a few differences between the MDC. First let me say that everyone that has worked on this (Shabby, SXTP, Mudavo, etc) Thank you.
Now I am a newbie, but I am trying to educate myself, so please be patient while I ask questions. Under the Application Manager I am seeing a few apps (Com2uSPoker, Match3VS ) for example. I've already frozen Samsung Knox, and SEAndroid with Titanium Pro, but I'm wondering what the issue would be with me to remove some of these APKs all together (TripAdvisor and Swype for example)
Ideally I would like to do what I use to with the HTC and say pull the apks I don't use and put in ones that I like such as NovaLauncher over the EasyLauncher that is there. I am however very paranoid of having my brand new shiny turn into a brand new door stop.
Any advice or articles that you guys can point my way would be very appreciated. So my question is this, can I do all of the things I mentioned here? Would anything I do here be extremely bad?

Nah I'm sticking to the modified stock kernel. I did notice that some of my quadrant scores dropped when I killed some of the apps. Weird, but I'll figure it out.
I know there is plenty of info on this topic but I have a few questions and it would be nice to have them all answered in this thread. I have a lot of rooting and modding experience (previous phone was the evo 3d), but I remember reading that one of the 2? sprint s4 updates may either not allow some apps to work or kill a feature/ interfere with rooting is that true?
-So is the MF9 the newest update or the 2nd to last? Can you guys please break down the main things changed in the two updates?
- How do I check which I am on atm? I don't remember doing any of the large ones.
Finally what would the best way to root? I plan on keeping touchwiz for now, and probably using Ktoonsez kernel?
Which recovery is recommended?

MF9 is the latest official release. If you want it I recommend updating before rooting just because it is a bit easier that way. Largest change in MF9 is apps2sd capability but can see the changes here: Update Changlog
To check just go to menu/settings/more/about device. Take note of software and baseband version. This will tell you what you are currently on.
Go here for root instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2257101
Recovery is really a personal choice. TWRP can be a bit buggy and depends on the version but still works for regular usage. CWM/OUDHS work fine as well. Use what you are familiar with. I prefer TWRP for the touch interface and restore of root if permissions get removed.
As for apps and MF9, I have read some having issues with certain apps but don't know much more than that. I have never had any issues with any app but know there are some with enormous amounts of apps on the device so who knows. Maybe it is a problem created when moving data to the extsd card.
Also, don't forget to check this thread after rooting. Has a wealth of information and links to what you can do: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2303917

I'm not familiar with anything specific to MF9. Probably depends on the device trying to connect. My Note 8 connects/works fine using the hotspot mod on MF9 and previous versions.
I don't get why people do not ask this in the noob thread instead of making a new one.

I have MF9, rooted, stock rom. The Hotspot mod works for me, just like it did on the MDL. No problems installing it or using it on my S4.
I must say I'm deeply disappointed by the lack of responsiveness on the LG forums. So far, none of my queries (none too difficult, mostly regarding specific steps or problems during flashing) have been answered. Coming from a Samsung I must say those XDA forums were beehives compared to the utter deadliness that reigns here. I understand that there can't be many roms as long as only the international version can be unlocked, but it is frustrating to have to get into a whole new ballgame as far as flashing etc. is concerned (compared to Samsung practices) without some assistance from the community.
Sorry about this, I just needed to unload my chagrin...
I don't have experience flashing this device. One reason is that Verizon detects if you're rooted and I don't want to void my warranty so soon after getting the device.

I've had a couple of questions and whilst they have taken a little longer than normal to be answered, I'm not overly fussed because I'm getting help for free so if it's not immediate, it doesn't really matter. LG rooting/flashing is completely new to me too so I'd rather wait than rush in without fully understanding what I was doing.

I know it's free and I shouldn't complain. But the difference with the Samsung community is striking. And it's precisely because all is new that one hopes for some assistance. Look at the last post of this thread. Maybe I'm spoilt having to wait for 2 days, but somehow I suspect I'll never get an answer. And maybe it's also because there are not enough knowledgable members on the LG forums, which means that one is always dependent on the OP.

You must understand that it's not we people don't want to reply to you, and for your question in regards to the post, I'm pretty sure a search would bring up many queries that you have been asking before. The phone has only been out for a few months, and people are slowly working on the progress for this phone. It's not that people have no knowledge, it's just that the community (let's be frank) is not as large as Samsung's community. We can try to provide as much help as possible, but sometimes help us out by doing a search before questioning stuffs.
We all that come towards this forum wanted to see something more, something exciting and play around with custom roms and stuff, but there's their pros and cons.
For example, there's already a team building towards CM/Blisspop, and they are progressing steadily, bringing us updates and fixes that will eventually be available for everyone.
So sometimes, just have the patience to wait, or if you really need to query in regards to stuff, you could do a PM.
Do not follow that guide until you are already running version F. You will lose exfat on your SD card

Coming from a Nexus 4 the tumbleweed here is a bit odd but if a phone is pretty well locked down that does cramp this forums style a bit.
On the other hand the only niggle I have with the G4 is the horrible over saturated tones that make reds look purple. If I could tone that back say 20% it would be nearly perfect for me.

tdevaughn, you are referring to my question in the other thread? But how am I ever getting to version F as I am already rooted and running a flashed stock rom (version d, with necessarily Updates turned off)?

It's just that sometimes a question is so specific that a search won't do. As is my question in the thread which you OP'ed (or was that already answered in that thread and I overlooked it?). And PM'ing... now that I would consider harrassment.
Anyway, I hear you and I certainly appreciate the efforts of people like yourself. “Trees that are slow to grow bear the best fruit.”
The only question nobody can answer in the G4 is why are we obliged to flash a kdz file to update the fw when you have an unlocked bootloader (official root). Losing internal data + root everytime we want to update the fw!!
Why isn't a way to extract the fw files from the kdz so we can flash them without data and twrp loss like they do it on htc s_off phones?

just taking a stab at it
1. flash back to a non-rooted system image (a search will probably turn something up) for your current version
2. ENABLE UPDATES! and retrieve the OTAs to, um, UPDATE? (gee.. if you disabled updates, I WONDER why updates won't work)
3a. find a rooted system image for your new version and dd flash that
or
3b. follow guide to dd pull your non-rooted system partition, inject SuperSu, and dd flash your self-made rooted system image

Well for me, I've never thought of PM as a spam. At least you can easily get your questions asked and answered without questioning the other members who may or may not be new to the forum and just slowly learning So if you really have anything to ask, feel free to ask. And to answer your question in regards to the other thread, the command for that is universal for H815 variants, and works on all the rooted images out there.
you know what I was thinking the exact same thing
When i first got my G4 i tried to root and cocked it up totally so posted on here and got about 3 replies, this was my first Android phone previously having the crappy fruit phone for 10 years
I am an experienced computer user and have mucked about with all kinds of stuff for years
One thing that has stuck in my mind i read a comment on a thread here that said something like 'thats why noobs shouldnt root phones' - what kind of person thinks this way? I will go out of my way to help people in this type of situation
Anyways I am now pretty mustard on the G4 and know my phone/rooting inside out after spending the last 6 or so weeks finding out the wrongs and rights of rooting with several mishaps and always finding my answers due to the few helpful peeps around here
There are some brilliant posters on here and there are also some right ****ing morons
disappointing user...
all answers already out there.. but wants hand held instead of searching/reading.

If you ever have a problem with your electrics let me know i will be more than happy to help you if i can ... without patronising you
BTW you have helped me out more than you know
Well usually if someone has an answer they'll share ot or tell you where to look. If they haven't then maybe they don't know either.. I rarely have to ask questions because I read and search and help out where/when I'm able. Half the time IF I do.ask a question I end up finding the answer shortly after on my own because of my diligence and risk taking. There aren't necessarily a lot of roms out there( which I don't care anyway), but the rest is still okay. I mean there's root and xposed and that's even for locked down variants too. Maybe it's just me cause I didn't always have it so good. I had phones that we had ridiculously hard methods of obtaining root and unlock if ever. We found a way though and now things are a hell of a lot easier. Idk I just don't see the point in a thread like this..
As a matter of fact this is the first phone I haven't rooted or Jailbreaked day one, mostly because I bought it as a cure for a flash o holic A new Nexus line is on its way, hopefully with a ok camera, it's going to be my flashy phone and this one will be the stockish backup

I'm not sure it's fair to compare a forum for this device to the various Samsung ones when Samsung is the second largest phone manufacturer in the world and by far the most popular Android OEM.

You can flash as many KDZ's as you want without losing data. I have done it a few times now myself. I don't know where you got the idea that you lose your data every time..
Yes you lose root though. It's pretty simple to flash a rooted image after you get root back, though.
There are two options when flashing a KDZ with LG Flash Tool. Wipe or don't wipe. Pretty simple.
Or is it different with an unlocked bootloader?

I have no idea! The dude who made the tutorial on how to get back to stock using kdz told me I will loose TWRP, though no idea if I will loose bootloader unlock too, if that's the case the process of unlocking the bootloader will wipe all data

Ah ok. Yes, you will also lose TWRP. I guess it is more of a pain with an unlocked bootloader. Mine is locked, so I don't get TWRP. I just flash whatever KDZ, pull system image, inject root, flash the rooted image.
yo yo yo devs and phone maniacs,
i have s5-900f or something similiar to that and after 2 years i am out of patience. My phone is laggy ( snapchat and camera opening like 50 billion years maybe slightly more) and i need some quick reminder what to do. I used custom rom on my S3 back in the days, well i forgot like everything, but i remember some odin and these things so i am not complete begginer. So i need some quick tips and what to do like root your phone download this and this ( not exactly, but what is it called and what to look for) and i will google it i am not that retarded, i hope i just need quick heads up. I think main issue is the bloatware, but you probably know that more than i do.
First i have some questions
- Do i need to install custom rom to be without bloatware ?
- If so is cyanogenmod the most reliable here or there are some version which looks like the same as the stock rom ?
I dont care actually that much about look, i just need everything to work, like snapchats/camera and not to drain battery like its some milk from mother's nipple. This might be the stupidest thing in the world, but launcher thing like touchwiz and google launcher, i deal with that after the rom adjusting, am i right ? I might wrote complete bullsh*t, well i dont understand these things that much
I hope atleast someone will help me with the basics or transfer me to some thread where i can find more answers than questions
Thank you very much for reading and eventually helping

you have quite the way with words
we will need to know what exact model you have. Look under the battery. If your bootloader is locked, root methods differ from unlocked ones
and you dont need a custom rom, just root and titanium backup. make a backup of the full rom, then go into TiB and make a backup of the bloatware apps and then remove them, or if you go pro with TiB (titanium backup) you can freeze apps

Well thanks, my english i pretty bad, i try my best so few sentences might not make any sense so dont worry to correct me in any way
its SM-g900f and will custom rom improve my phone a lot ? i mean battery and speed side of my phone. I would like to avoid it if it brings more trouble than advantages.
I think i can root my phone without problems (well google will help, dont want to waste any of your time for my problems) , i just need help with custom roms.

Just grab twrp 3.0.2-1 and flash it via Odin. Once installed, boot to recovery and select reboot then power off. It'll ask you if you want to j stall SU, swipe to confirm yes. Power it back on and you should have SuperSU in your app drawer. From there you can use TiB to remove the crapware and it'll speed your phone up and decrease lag. Yes, a custom ROM will substantially improve performance and battery life. The euro version isn't my deepest field of expertise, as it has a Samsung xynos processor as opposed to the snapdragon in the us variants and some things G's can get murky because of that, but the answer to your battery and lag issue is either a complete wipe and start from scratch, TiB your troubles away or custom rom that thing!

Nice thanks seems easy, i like it. Well now the custom rom. Do you know any other good custom roms except CMod, which are reliable ? I hope CMod is, i figure he is the one who rules, since he is the most famous and i think i have read it somewhere. I just have a feelin, when i try another rom, my phone will be some issue everyday, not sure why

Well, i can tell you that no custom ROM is perfect, but the touchwiz ones are more trouble free than CM based ROMs. I run MOAR 7.0 and its very trouble free, but i use a G900P.
since the forum search functionality has been restored, a quick search for g900f yielded this for me http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2741302
theres tons of ROMs for this phone

The euro one has a xynos processor and the us ones have snapdragons. The kernels for the xynos roms aren't compatible with the snapdragon ones
