I haven't really experienced any of the other issues with the 2013 Nexus 7. Wifi speeds themselves are good, touchscreen is behaving fine, GPS seems to work fine. The only problem I am having is that the device's network connection lags for about 3 seconds every 60 seconds when connected to wifi.
I have attempted pinging every other wireless device on my network from my ethernet-connected desktop, and also have pinged my router from each device itself. My Nexus 4 and laptop behave fine, low latency with an occasional 300-500 ms response time at the maximum.
My 2013 Nexus 7 however, does not. It will drop a packet, and then the next two to three packets will be returned at the same time, resulting in response times similar to 2336 ms, 1336 ms, 338 ms for the next three consecutive responses and a pipe recording of 2 or 3. This happens consistently roughly every 60 seconds, almost exactly so.
This behavior results in media streams of anything higher than about 480p (YouTube especially) stopping/having to buffer every 1-3 minutes on my Nexus 7, when my 30mbps down internet can easily handle it, and does on any of my other devices.
Is anyone else having this problem? If not, can I assume it's a hardware issue, or do you think it will be resolved in software updates?
Pics of a few ping test results attached. Screenshots 2 and 3 are from the same ping test.

The recent small OTA update seemed to have fixed the problem I had with YouTube and other streams buffering constantly, but I still have the ping spikes like I described. At least it doesn't affect my daily use of the device anymore, it's still rather silly though. Do you think the NIC could just be of poor quality? That was my first guess after software bug.

Are ping tests also displaying such spikes, or just the application you're using? I would certainly feel better if I knew it wasn't just my device.

I resolve my problem with splashtop 2 , i disable the gps and there is no more lag(freeze)every minute.
Borderlads 2 is very smooth in 720 and very playable in 1080 (5ghz n routor)

just briefly read through this thread

and i thought i'll give it a try. i'll post the results soon
i've done a little of playing with it, so far works fairly well, i was able to overclock to 625 but 604 seems most stable but drains battery a substantial amount. i'll test a little more and update my little review on it later
I've always getting an "ERROR" whenever I'm trying to run it.

l guess you have to be connected to ac charger while using this app..and just test it now..yap same thing while on charger..when u try to increase to 604 it displays "quite"option and "deatail"option...only way to open again app is to reset phone.
Ok, yesterday I've cleared my X2 because of some apps that I've already deleted but still messing with my X2. the 7KCpuSpeed can run but only up to 528Mhz, beyond that and you'll going to get "ERROR". And the setting "apply speed at boot" is greyed out. Or perhaps it was V1 bug.
So I re-install all my apps including this one (7kCpuSpeed)V2 and to my surprise, it behaves dif'rently...it was running smoothly! I just did tap the 604Mhz, tap Menu and the option "apply speed at boot" is not in grey anymore...it can be set. then did soft-reset.
And this is the result when i open the app again.

And I'm like...IS THIS FOR REAL?
And you might want to ask, has the SPEED improve....YES, A LOT!
And didn't encounter any "ERROR" whatsoever even if it wasn't plugged on AC. And yes, it has a big effect on battery life.
so all to do is only install file V2 and run right?
or do you have any instruction to warn...

To be honest..I don't have any idea
Might just be a better version of this app
these were the same results i was getting, didn't know if it was just me or not, but it'll only run for a little bit then after like 3 minutes it'll shut down. but at 604 it is real stable and run for a while, even when off the charger

Never had an experience of my X2's shutting down. Are you on V2?
my mistake, what i meant to say is the application will close out, then i'll have to soft-restart my phone in order to start the app again. and no, i'm still running v1 at the moment
just downloaded v2, wow what an improvement.
to test to see if it actually works i've timed certain things. (at 604 mhz)
before increase speed: start>lock 4.2 sec
after: immediately!
before: open opera mini 5: 21 sec
after: 12 sec
ffVIII in fpsece (landscape): averaging 15-28 fps
after (landscape): averaging 25-40 fps
the last one is especially useful
now i have a favor to ask, could some of you other people try some of these tests on your own and post your results to confirm my tests?

Same thing happens to when I'm still on V1. If I pushed it beyond 604, I'll get an ERROR.
anyone fimiliar with the Mortscript file for xperia x2? does we need that script to keep the overclock's file running? or just v2 file is enuff? i heard that we hav to run the apps everytime we switch on the phone~ im dumb in programming~ plz help ~
well I have tested this program, to be fair It's good when the phone is plugged into the charger and it rocks the socks out of the device with 1052 MHz.
But when you unplug it, it goes back to 528Mhz.
Keep up the good work, this program should be running on X2 24/7 !
when i unplugged my phone, it stayed at 1052 mhz. don't know if it make a difference but its a prototype phone. played XTrakt fro about 15 mins got 1 or 2 hiccups but played very smooth. been at 1052 for about 1hr not plugged to ac adapter. Gets hot when i use apps but staying without any errors so far. will try all day see what happens. hope it doesn't melt )
There had one month, I had tried nueOverClockTest : nuerom.com/BlogEngine/post/2009/09/07/nueOverClockTest.aspx
This software can to overclock at only 768Mhz, it works fine with AC or not and the phone was fast. But after a few days my screen became all white, I had to turn it off for 2 hours to return to normal.
Scary... I quickly uninstalled it

Here's the Video, for those who want to see first hand the Vibrant initial GPS locking issue:
I decided to compare my two new Samsung Vibrant's to my Motorola Cliq...
I tried with and without the fix, and tried with and without wireless, and with and without use wireless networks... all resulted in the same results... The Vibrant GPS has a problem.
Test Case
1. Power off
2. Power on
3. Start GPS Test
Results:
Motorola Cliq: ~ 1 second
Vibrant 1: ~ 70 seconds
Vibrant 2: ~120 seconds
I repeated the the test several times, and the vibrants had random results from 1 to 10 minutes to find the initial lock.
After the initial lock, subquentiant locks took less than a second, however anytime the vibrant is shutdown, or hours pass, the vibrant goes back to taking minutes to lock.
awesome video.. i noticed a couple of things that were very interesting in this video:
one, i noticed after owning *cough*several*cough* cliqs that the cliq keeps the GPS polling in the background periodically. the cliq also runs in MS Based mode. i found this out after being on the road with my band with this phone. when my network signal is lost so is my GPS lock. that probably contributes to the faster lock displayed in GPS test. the software seems to keep the GPS locked in the background all the time.
two, i also noticed that the vibrant in the middle that showed a single sat lock in GPS test also displayed the same time discrepancy that i discovered and posted about in my reply in the "GPS fix" thread. the vibrant also seems to keep the GPS "off" when not in use by any programs.. and it seems to have a relatively cold startup. this probably contributes to the phone sipping battery as compared to the cliq. the vibrant also comes stock with the GPS in "stand alone" mode. this makes the GPS separate from the mobile network. in theory you should still be able to achieve GPS data and lock independent of your network connection status. this is helpful when navigating in an out of network area.
i do agree that the GPS on the vibrant needs to be fixed.. but i am very convinced that the problem is in the way that the software reads the raw data from the GPS and Compass and also how the hardware is utilized.. and not related to any hardware failure. i also agree that one thing i liked about the cliq was that the compass and gps were always bang-on accurate. even if the rest of the phone was a total fail.
This depresses me to no end. I love my Vibrant, and these issues are what's keeping me at bay with a return. So long as they just came out and admitted there was a problem, that they intended to fix, I would be happy.
What do you guys think? Is it worth it to keep the phone and hope that the OTA / 2.2 update fixes the issues? Or are we about to be left in the dust by lack of support?
im of the firm belief that the issues are software based and therefore very fixable.. i also was shown the email that mentioned the 2.2 update for the Vibrant that will be released in the "next couple of weeks." so.. im keeping mine. my GPS works well enough for now that its usable until an update is issued.

I'm not sure why they would change the code that already worked very well with the cliq... Turn the cliq on and BANG it locks with and without use wireless network setting
I hear that the galaxy s used newer gps hardware, so while I'm hopeful it's a software issue, I'm not so sure. Every app now days is using location services, so this is a MAJOR issue if they can't get GPS to lock on in seconds

Is this news? I had a CLIQ and there have been several updates to it's GPS capabilities. Even the latest update (6 months after it's release) is supposed to improve lock time. I was happy with the CLIQ's GPS performance but it wasn't always good. The Vibrant has no problem getting a quick lock or seeing a bunch of sats with acceptable SNR levels. It just doesn't connect to nearly as many as it should and eventually it will take longer to get a lock (I'm back to a few seconds but who knows how long that will last) which seems completely like a firmware issue.
With some new tweaks I did to the GPS, I get a quicccccccccck lock from a FRESH reboot and this is only after 10 seconds or so. This is subject to get worse or stay the same but obviously, the GPS isn't flawed but the firmware is. It also seems like if it was to lock onto more sats, that it would be really good.

How can I tell what app is sending data? I installed netcounter and it says that it is sending TONNES of wireless data. My bill is wayyy over because if it! I need to know what app is doing it! I've disabledmy data for now over cell network. Its weird because I am on wifi, but it is sending over cell network when the phone is asleep
Wifi turns off when the screen is off by default.
Settings>Wireless&Network>Wi-Fi Settings>Menu button>Advance>WiFi sleep policy and chose NEVER. That way when screen goes to sleep WiFi is still connected and your mobile data doesn't kick in.
Try trafficstats from the market, to what is using data...

With the option to keep wifi on while sleeping, you not only will not use celular data when sleeping, it will actually save battery life too.

By tonnes what do you mean? I can't imagine your phone is doing this and you're not telling it to, unless "tonnes" means a few k here and there.
Find Battery History via Any Cut and check network usage.
2 gigs uploaded in two nights.
How is a gig per night uploaded without you knowing? My phone almost never uploads, it downloads if anything. That is a ridiculous amount of data being used as well. I can only ever use that much tethering. You'd basically hit 30 gigs per month at this rate which is near impossible unless you are aware of your downloads/uploads or tether
It looks like k-9 mail. So far after using trafficstats lite, k9 is uploading a MB every few seconds....luckily with the option to keep wifi on, I'm not racking up more money.....so far I'm over my data plan by $100 and Rogers wont do anything about it.

+1 !
I wish my home internet could even upload a few megs every few seconds. I never knew 3G was that damnnn fast. This almost beats my download speeds of 1.2MB/s!
I'm also with Rogers and gone over my plan. They WILL do something about it unless you have no idea what you're doing. I used to work for them and if you said what you're telling us here, I wouldn't credit you for anything because that's BS.
I don't wanna sound like an ass but you seem like a troll or just completely tech illiterate. You can't even post a picture correctly. You really think we can all read that?
I don't know what you mean by every few sec, so lets be safe and say 10 sec you do a mb. One minute and you're at 6mb. Therefore one day and you'll be uploading about 8gbs/day. Even if you upload a mb per minute, that still seems ridiculous. Everything you've told us so far sounds impossible. Especially since it's an email app (I'm assuming that's what K-9 is). This beats me tethering. I have a limit of 105 gigs per month on my rogers home internet cable and what your phone is using, passes that limit which is IMPOSSIBLE. You clearly are
a) trolling
b) doing something but too phone/tech/computer illiterate to know what you're doing
Suggestions: Don't get a smartphone
KAwAtA,
Your rude was at an 11, we need you more at a 4.
Anywho.. I think there's just some confusion going on.. K9 sending a few K a second every NOW and then I could maybe see.. although I doubt even that.. It'll sleep for up to 26 minutes by default on IDLE, so if no email, it's making zero data calls for up to 26 minutes, then it does an IDLE call to keep the connection alive. Now I've never actually monitored this, but I'm sure I could look in my mail logs to see, although I get mail enough that I doubt it'd be easy to find a 26 minute lull.
Hello everybody,
I have been trying my Galaxy Note for weeks in airplane at high altitudes/high speeds, till now I couldn't figure out when & how to use the Galaxy Note GPS as a reliable equipment as for unknown reasons to me it gets locked to satellites inflight randomly this could happens sometimes immediately & other times takes hours with no signal or 3 satellites at most, even when its locked to satellites it keeps working fine but if close GPS for 1 minute it couldn't come back to life again, one time I tried it locked already from ground before take-off and it kept working fine the whole flight as i didn't turn it off. I'm starting to develop a pattern on how to get a signal faster while in airplane and it seems to me holding the Galaxy Note like an LNB for satellite antennas helps you to get it locked faster I can't confirm this even its just an idea.
I hope some body can figure out why the Galaxy Note GPS acting like this inflight. Also if any one have some software that can let me send the GPS NMEA data I could use that to see my position on any windows map software like Google earth or aviation software like Jeppesn Flite star/JeppView
Here is some pictures for my randomly successful trials

not an expert on this. but sometimes if the device have satellite data cached while it has data access, it will lock on faster.
Back in my galaxy s days, the a common fix to resolve the crappy gps issue was to clear agps data and force the phone to get a new set of data from google's server.
Not sure if that's what cause your problem tho...
slow fix when in flight is possibly due to the speed you're doing at that point, it's going to be tough getting a fix when going that fast (coming from a cold lock)
From your pictures I gather you are a pilot as well
If you have a decent fix before takeoff, and you have your Note
stuck to the sidewindow, you should retain your fix.
As soon as you take it away from the window you
start loosing your fix fast. Reobtaining the fix will get harder and harder.
This behaviour is least noticable at ground level, most noticable with increased
speeds and altitudes.
Just stick it low on a side window in a mount, should keep working.
BTW : What the name of the app there ?
Off topic but what plane were you flying?

The interesting is that I had many cheaper Nokia around me on the same flights and all of them got GPS locked in less than a minute without any concerns how you hold the device just put it facing the windows nothing more so its unbelievable to have the latest Samsung state of the art Galaxy Note with such GPS unreliable performance, you can also notice in pic no. 5 the speed is only 180 km/h which is totally error.

Wow, I never owned a Nokia with GPS, but that is amazing!
I've seen many pax and crew struggle to get GPS fixed, no matter where they are in flight. Maybe Nokia's are just really good at highspeed/alt. fixing. (commercial jets)
From old "serial" GPS , to bluetooth mouse GPS, to internal (a)gps, it has always been a struggle at highspeed/alt.
Then again, stuff I fly rarely exceeds 200knots/20.000 feet so I'm all good up there
Safe skies !
PM sent.
I was sent this post in a PM, dont know why maybe to help explain, or offer my gps fix, honestly dont know. But after reading this, here are some reasons why you might be havng this issue:
Phones put the antenna (gps) in different places, holding it sometimes blocks the signal or weakens it (Yes the signal and antenna is that weak).
Speed plays a factor, inflight will take longer then before.
Time of day, sats remember are not in the same position all the time.
Warm lock opposed to a cold lock, Hard lock opposed to a soft lock.
And who makes the gps chip.
There are many factors when it comes to gps signals.
Hello all!
My Nexus 4's GPS is simply not locking. Is this a problem for anyone else? Is there Amy way to fix this?
Yes, I'm indoors, but so is my sprint s3 and it gets an instant and accurate lock. I tried a hard reset, but that didn't work.
Is anyone experiencing any GPS problems?

Outside it locks in like a minute or two, but I shouldn't HAVE to Go out to get a fix. My s3 essentially locks in less than 10 seconds. The s3 sees 8 more satellites. I might be being too picky.

In order for gps to work properly it needs to be able to see the satellites. Which means a clear view of the sky / outside
That is the reason why GPS signal is shaky in large cities and doesn't work in tunnels period. Stating that your GPS is broken because it doesn't get a lock inside is just frankly silly.

I would agree that it sounds silly but I also understand and agree with his point. My EVO LTE on Sprint locks indoors in NYC within a matter of seconds but my Nexus 4 on T-Mobile pre-paid never locks in exactly the same spot. Outside in the open it is fine and locks quickly so I can't say the GPS is broken but it's certainly not as strong as my EVO LTE.
same here. on T-Mobile. Verizon s3 gets an instant and accurate lock
My GPS locks very quickly, but after about 30 minutes in Navigation, it drops, and I have to turn off GPS (or exit and restart the Nav app), and turn it back on to reacquire satellite lock.
Sounds like you need a replacement, I'm blown away by how fast my N4 locks especially compared to my sensation.

Lol sry super late to respond. When y'all say you get an instant lock, do you mean as soon as you open up maps it find you, or does it find you like 15 seconds later? Navigation wasn't as smooth as I had hoped. Yesterday when using it it lagged behind throughout the whole trip... I'd imagine if I sent the device in to Google it would take foooorever.
I'm also experiencing slow locks.
