How can I tell what app is sending data? I installed netcounter and it says that it is sending TONNES of wireless data. My bill is wayyy over because if it! I need to know what app is doing it! I've disabledmy data for now over cell network. Its weird because I am on wifi, but it is sending over cell network when the phone is asleep
Wifi turns off when the screen is off by default.
Settings>Wireless&Network>Wi-Fi Settings>Menu button>Advance>WiFi sleep policy and chose NEVER. That way when screen goes to sleep WiFi is still connected and your mobile data doesn't kick in.
Try trafficstats from the market, to what is using data...
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
With the option to keep wifi on while sleeping, you not only will not use celular data when sleeping, it will actually save battery life too.

By tonnes what do you mean? I can't imagine your phone is doing this and you're not telling it to, unless "tonnes" means a few k here and there.
Find Battery History via Any Cut and check network usage.
2 gigs uploaded in two nights.
How is a gig per night uploaded without you knowing? My phone almost never uploads, it downloads if anything. That is a ridiculous amount of data being used as well. I can only ever use that much tethering. You'd basically hit 30 gigs per month at this rate which is near impossible unless you are aware of your downloads/uploads or tether
It looks like k-9 mail. So far after using trafficstats lite, k9 is uploading a MB every few seconds....luckily with the option to keep wifi on, I'm not racking up more money.....so far I'm over my data plan by $100 and Rogers wont do anything about it.

Couple of megs every few SECONDS?? Very, very doubtful. Can you upload a screenshot that isn't a 100 pixel thumbnail?

+1 !
I wish my home internet could even upload a few megs every few seconds. I never knew 3G was that damnnn fast. This almost beats my download speeds of 1.2MB/s!
I'm also with Rogers and gone over my plan. They WILL do something about it unless you have no idea what you're doing. I used to work for them and if you said what you're telling us here, I wouldn't credit you for anything because that's BS.
I don't wanna sound like an ass but you seem like a troll or just completely tech illiterate. You can't even post a picture correctly. You really think we can all read that?
I don't know what you mean by every few sec, so lets be safe and say 10 sec you do a mb. One minute and you're at 6mb. Therefore one day and you'll be uploading about 8gbs/day. Even if you upload a mb per minute, that still seems ridiculous. Everything you've told us so far sounds impossible. Especially since it's an email app (I'm assuming that's what K-9 is). This beats me tethering. I have a limit of 105 gigs per month on my rogers home internet cable and what your phone is using, passes that limit which is IMPOSSIBLE. You clearly are
a) trolling
b) doing something but too phone/tech/computer illiterate to know what you're doing
Suggestions: Don't get a smartphone
KAwAtA,
Your rude was at an 11, we need you more at a 4.
Anywho.. I think there's just some confusion going on.. K9 sending a few K a second every NOW and then I could maybe see.. although I doubt even that.. It'll sleep for up to 26 minutes by default on IDLE, so if no email, it's making zero data calls for up to 26 minutes, then it does an IDLE call to keep the connection alive. Now I've never actually monitored this, but I'm sure I could look in my mail logs to see, although I get mail enough that I doubt it'd be easy to find a 26 minute lull.

So, I use netcounter to keep track of my data usage, as I'm sure many others do. My Vodafone contract, that I started a year ago with my HTC Magic, gives me 500MB a month. This has always been plenty - sometimes getting a bit close if I decide to download a couple of custom roms while out the house.
The last week or so though, my usage has SKYROCKETED for no apparent reason.
Netcounter says I've used 302.95MB of non-wifi data TODAY, and it's 9:30am!! I've just woken up! PLUS I've had wifi turned on throughout the night!
What seems suspicious to me is that of that 300+MB only 8.23MB was recieved - 294.71MB was SENT from my phone, between midnight and now, over 3g, when it was connected to the wifi the whole time.
I've apparently used over 1GB in the last 7 days. 90% of which was sent from the phone. I have absolutely no clue what is causing this, and to be honest I'm somewhat praying that it's a glitch with netcounter... otherwise my phone bill is not going to be pretty...
Anyone know of any apps I may have installed that could be causing this? Or any other processes that could have the same effect? As it was so much data sent I thought maybe it was different apps sending anonymous usage data, but switching off all of those that I could find doesn't seem to have solved it D:
I used about 700MB last month...
My bill says 3,7 Gigas...
I tend to use & abuse tethering...
12€ unlimited data plan. Isn´t it at Voda UK?
Check what apps/services are running, could be something going a-miss somewhere.
Seems a bit wierd you had a load of xfer over 3g even with wifi enabled though - maybe try and force 2G only and see what the logging program says then?

Sadly unlimited isn't actually unlimited. 500MB "fair usage" and I think you get charged when you go over that...
As Highland3r says: just use wifi and force 2g only. I use netcounter too, and it says I've only used 3.6mb 3g and 130.73mb over wifi in the last 7 days (only had phone for 5 days actually).
If you think it's a glitch try reinstalling netcounter or something.

I use 3G watchdog to make sure i dont go over and it works a treat, i ALWAYS surf the internet download ROMs and apps using 3G but i havent used much lol
40MB used in the last 5 days, ( i havent downloaded any ROMs for a while though lol)
Maybe u shud try using 3G watchdog at the same time as the app your using at the minute
it will show you if the app is messing up or just confirm that you are somehow sending alot of data to someone through 3G
Same thing happening to me!
Although here in Argentina is much more limited, but I try not to use EDGE, and it consumed 1mb download and 26mb upload.
I don't know what does it upload...

If you are using the news and weather widget to display news stories, you'll notice that every single time it cycles to a new story it uses a tiny bit of data. If you've set it to also download pictures for stories, I could see how overnight it could use a ridiculous amount of data.

You wouldnt expect that to upload data though?
Did you try another app to measure and/or killing 3G and seeing if that makes a difference?
It's probably a wild guess, but do you use the Voice Recognition a lot? It send the audio to Google and returns text, so it uploads much more than it downloads.
But I don't think it would be that much.
Well even with wifi turned on, andriod by default puts the wifi to sleep when your phone(display) does to sleep too. So if you had some culprit program running the background, even with wifi turned on it'll still use the cell network by default as long as your phone as asleep.
So... I've been monitoring the usage throughout the day...
Reached about 20MB of data over wifi today, which is reasonable for the amount of browsing I've done on it. At last check (about 2-3 hours ago) cell data was at 0B, as it should be with wifi on.
Pulled it out of my pocket just now - 3G icon was in the notifications bar... thought that was probably a bad sign... 65.42MB 3G data used... 95% sent, 5% received...

Sensorly turns itself on if you do any of the following:
Turn on or off GPS
Turn on or off WiFi
Turn on the phone
In addition, when the app starts, it will turn on wifi.
It's a cool app, but if you have GPS on, and it kicks in and you forget to kill it, your battery is down 50% in an hour. It's extremely frustrating that something so useful is so damn annoying. It's almost malware. I uninstalled it from my phone.
I uninstalled sensorly last night... so it's not that.
Might try uninstalling WaveSecure. Pretty sure it's not auto-backing-up anything as on the site I only have the sms and call data from when I purposely told it to back up... but worth a try...
the only other apps I've added recently are...
Gmail Notifier
Gesture Search
Dialer One

I had the same issue a couple of weeks back, I was at the point of only setting my APN to the correct value only when I wanted data enabled, usually just for an hour a day over lunch due to it going crazy downloading something. After a week of doing this the issue appears to have gone away and I am back to leaving data enabled 24/7 with an average of 10-15MB per day inc normal useage. From my orginaly post on this forum I was given the following advice to try and track down the issue...

Greetings,
Guys, first of all, I'm no pro, this worked for me, it may not work for you, and its not the 'solution' for people who wish to be connected to internet 24/7.
- I have no Dataplan, Vibrant would connect and eat through my balance on EDGE/GPRS.
- I downloaded an app from Google Market, "Quick Settings" (search for it)
- Run Quick Settings and Turn off Mobile Data. It should show "Disconnected"
Basically, I did this with intention to save my precious hard earned money but the side effect appears to be that my Battery life suddenly has gone insane.
Before when I did have GPRS on, I would regularly check Advanced Task killer and kill apps in attempt to stop apps from connecting.
My use has been more or less same, I'm not a Power user, just take it to office, use now and then, and the battery would finish up in ~9 hours, 10 tops.
Anyway, here is the result

You can do this by just holding power then pressing Data Network.. or simply going into WiFi settings and disabling the phone from being connected from the internet.
Of course if you're using the phone without it being connected to the internet, a lot of power isn't going to be consumed. It's a smartphone, supposed to use the internet on it.
A tip I would recommend is to use SuperPower and it can do a bunch of tweaks to improve your battery (screen off; disables data.. things like that).
i dont have a dataplan either, but i DO text, if i do that, will it just turn off all communications like text and phone calls? I only use web when im at home with my WIFI.
I'm just wondering, why did you get a smartphone with no data? I see that you're not even using wifi. Why not just get a Windows 6.1 phone or a Blackberry or something?

I do have access to WiFi, tho I use it more at home and other places, less during work.
I dont have a data plan because there is only EDGE/GPRS available on it, no 3G *yet*.
So when I do want to check on something, I simply turn it on for a minute or two, check on my mails or anything else etc and be done. Otherwise, what was happening was, I'd get connected even tho when I did not wanted it to connect. It was costing me for nothing. I can do other syncs etc at home or 100 other places that have wifi.
I did not get Windows 6.1 phone or Blackberry is because Android > them both. I assume you know that already. + Awesome screen is awesome.
As I said very clearly earlier and I shall repeat it for you, this may be useful for people who have same profile of usage patterns as myself.
Please tell me that 19 hours isn't the best you got.

As for disabling the internet, i just check the box in settings to not use data. under wireless settings or something. I don't pay for data because no 3g in my area also.
Why not just put the Power Control widget on your home screen somewhere? The button between GPS and Brightness toggles whether you allow apps to sync on the 'Net or not.
IOW if you turn that toggle off you won't get email unless you launch your email reader, you won't get anything from the 'Net unless you initiate it.
Me? I just installed Onyx from Team Whiskey and I can go 3 days without worrying about my battery life if I'm just doing limited usage of the phone.

Hi... I've had a LOT of battery issues after installing CM 7.0 RC3 or whatever that last one was. As the Nightly builds got higher - battery got worse. I have the latest radio for this Phone, and I've even replaced it. Battery life is horrible lately. I have two batteries (thought it was my battery) - I've cycled both of them a few times, and it still acts odd. I've wiped / reloaded, same thing. When I changed the radio from Euro to US, it seemed to be a bit better. But I'll be walking around my office with 99% battery, go out, smoke, talk to two people (20-30m) and it'll drop to 88% like it's nothing.
After changing the radio to US, the Cell Standby lowered, but Android System has crept up. I have TweetDeck set for 15m refresh, Google+ is set to push sync or w/e, I have two email accounts and I've disabled the FB/Twitter apps. I'm not overclocked at all either.
Anyone have any insight on this? I'm currently on Build 153. It seems like when I play Music it dies insanely fast. I used to get 12-24 hours on this, even playing music.
Screen shot coming.
Screenshot:
And I haven't done anything today. Sent a few texts, few G+ posts, and talked on the phone for like an hour... And I charged today from 0% to full (6 hours) when I was sleeping. No music, no games.

I agree. The latest miui build is great on battery life even with the optimized ui.
I text from morning until night, every 5 minutes or so a reply is sent. Also wifi is on and using the xda app every now and then.
I woke up at 9 EST and it is now 12 EST. I haven't reached 50% yet.
I have brightness turned all the way down, screen timeout to minimum, and kill apps once they are closed.
It's all about the rom and how you use it really.
You may want to install something like watchdog and have it monitor phone processes. I had something like this happen on stock froyo and it turned out to be the media scan process.
I cleared out my media dirs on the sdcard, and things went back to normal.

+1 on watchdog. I love that app. Its not a blatant task killer, it just gives you good information on your processes and alerts when one regularly comes above your set threshold.
guys, people have reported that updating google maps drains battery. try uninstall the updates, or temporarily remove google maps, then report another day of battery. even if gmaps isnt even showing there, its said to drain battery recently.
This started happening about a week ago... I didn't install any new apps in particular. I've attached screenshots to the post.
Screen-on time is a little below an hour in these screenshots.
As you can see Android OS and Android System are at the top of the list by a long shot. Android System seems "normal" in the sense that it has 58mn of CPU time and only 18mn of wakelocks (as reported by the built-in battery menu).
Android OS however kept the phone awake for 6h11 which seems like a lot. I'm not rooted, so I did the ADB USB trick in order to pull stats out of Wakelock Detector, and all of the apps clearly don't add up to six hours. Especially not the usual suspects like Google Services, Facebook, etc.
Diagnosis shows a LOT of system processes, and I'm not sure if that means 1) it's all good as far as user land goes (I don't have any weird apps) 2) there's a system process gone rogue for some reason 3) the cause isn't showing up 4) something else???
Does anyone have any idea what's going on?

Me too - 910F - im on Lollipop, but struggling to make it through a day at the moment.
Checking my Battery Graph is the same Story - my phone seems to be Awake constantly.
Seems Android System is using it....
Anyone have any ideas?
I can only recommend rooting your phones and change roms or kernels.
TW is heavy on battery and if you change to a CM rom the battery life will increase dramatically.
I have rooted all my phones since the very first android phone ever made and i cannot own a non rooted device as the freedom of rooting is just to awsome to ignore.
Every time i have battery issues i ether change my rom or kernel and then my issues goes away...
Can't root Verizon unfortunately
Hmm. Try this. Unchecked under advanced wifi, the option to let Google and apps use wifi, even when wifi off. Since then, 12 hours, I have had normal sleep. Did reboot after Unchecked. . Premature to say I fixed it, but so far so good.
Update. Since unchecking that wifi option, phone sleeping normally still.
Update #2- after 36 hours. It's back! Awake constantly. Unreal

I got my new Finow X3+ watch this past week and although I'm really impressed with the look, speed and overall capability of the device, all of that means squat when it can't make it past 8 or 9 hours on a good day with very limited use (basically only checking the time and notifications with only BT tether and cell on, no WIFI).
Not sure if it was bad OTAs that I installed when I got it or what's going on but I think it has something to do with phone not sleeping..If anyone can give tips to save battery that you've found for unrooted x3+ please let me know.
Also does anyone know of a way to disable the pedometer hardware as I'm pretty sure that's the a big issue. Thanks guys
The cell network is the batt hogger. What do you expect from that tiny batt? Because Watch standby is perfect.

It's true, since turning off cell service I can usually get almost a full day (7am-10pm) just using it as a companion watch with m2d but it's disappointing not being able to use it the way I thought I could.
But how are you getting 3.5 days on one charge? I don't think mine goes into full deep sleep possibly because pedometer always logging info? Please let me know if you know how to disable the pedometer constantly running since I'd rather use it and the Heart monitor on an "as needed" basis. Any help is appreciated.
You have installed this update?
Yea I did...should I not have installed it?
I read that drains the battery, you've seen any change?

Yea I noticed bit more drain after that OTA but not overheating like some others. Gonna try factory reset like sonia said
I turned off GPS and WIFI and also ios notification which was big battery hog and it made big difference. How did you stop other sensors and pedometer though? I can't find those settings.
As ios turn off notifications?

Yea I turned off the ios push notification like you're showing in your pic, was taking about 10% battery in mine too. It didn't have any effect on notifications from phone to watch cause I don't use iPhone. Saved good amount in battery too.
So you know how I can disable pedometer if that's possible?
But as ios notifications is disabled?

I force closed ios notifications from the running apps list but for some reason it still takes some battery. Anyway I solved my issue: I did factory reset and then downloaded a phone booster app someone recommended on the Google group page.
Went from ~8-10 hours light use to about a day and half on one charge with moderate use. If anyone has battery life issues for seemingly no reason then try this. Thanks for your help mad.
What phone booster app?
