[Q] Deaktivating the loudspeaker - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Folks,
my Nexus 4 got damaged by rain. Since then, the loudspeaker is not working anymore, but is making a super annoying click sound when i press buttons (even when sound is disabled). Everything else works fine. I do not want to let it repair because that costs 100€ and i will buy the nexus 5 in october anyway, so i decided to live with a not working loudspeaker. But the click-sound drives me crazy, so my question is, is there a possibility to completely deactivate the loudspeaker?
Thanks in advantage + best regards

...Then just buy whatever is released

A Nexus 4 speaker cost less than 20 dollars :
http://www.ebay.com/itm/LG-Nexus-4-...e_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item4173fb43db
and then you can change it or simply remove it if you don't want to buy one with this guide :
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+Nexus+4+Speaker/13049/1
It take less than 30min even the first time you do it.
Best regards

Thanks for the link. According to a friend of mine it's not the loudspeaker that is broken, but the audiocontroller. So i will just remove the speaker.
Thank you very much!

Annoying whining noise from screen - where do I stand?

Hi folks,
I thought I'd get some opinions from folks here regarding the screen whine issue that some LCD screens get.
I recently bought a replacement Tytn off ebay after breaking my screen on mine. When it arrived it looked fine. I put it on charge and started cleaning it. That night I find out it's got a high pitched whine making it almost unusable.
I've sent it back to the seller and asked for a refund but he says he's contacted HTC to find out if it's a recognised fault or not. If it's not something that HTC acknowledge then he's going to make me make arrangements to pick it up from him.
Does anyone know if this is a recognised fault with the phone?
AFAIK, I have got some experience with some other handheld, it appear the pitch noise come from LCD inverter. seen some picth noise in early production of O2 Atom, old handera handheld. even nokia e61 generates pitch noise if you listen it closely. what I can not confirm is where the LCD inverter located, in mainboard or in LCD modul it self. So I can ot tell you which one is broken.
Well, it's just my opinion.
Thanks for the input tianz.
I've found loads of info on Google about it. It appears to be quite common with some of the older mobile phones.
Is it reasonable to expect me to have to accept a phone which has an audible whining noise to it?
Well... actually it's up to you, If you find the whining noise is too loud for your ear maybe you should return it while you can. As my experience when I had Handera with whining noise, I had return it. but when the replacement came back, the whining noise get worse and the company said that there's no problem at all with my Handera.
Later on I found out what cause the whining noise, and actually very simple to fix it, just find the inverter ?? (sorry I don't know what they call it in english, It's ferit core and copper wire wrapped around it) and put some wax from the candle or you can use glue.
And again, I don't know where exactly the inverter located in Hermes device, or maybe they use different model of inverter in Hermes.
So, It's up to you. I hope my answer will satisfied you. Thank you
Unfortunately I bought the phone off ebay and the guy isn't keen to refund me - although he currently has both phone and my money.
He says it's not that loud/irritating so I'm not sure what to do.
I've just dealt with it. The whine is only there when the LCD screen is on. My 8525 phone is exactly 1 year old. It can be irritating though, so I use the earbuds whenever I can.

Unfortunately for me the guy that's selling me the phone doesn't appear to agree that it's annoying:
=========================================================
"I have tried the phone and whilst it is just possible to hear a noise if I put my ear to the screen (why ayone would need to do that I have no idea) there is no audible noise when the phone is held to the ear as used in a normal phone call"
=========================================================
I can hear it loud and clear even at arms length - the phone doesn't even need to be near my head!

That's the problem, he doesn't want to refund. He wants me to keep the phone so he doesn't have to deal with it.
if you do have the phone in your hand, please confirm the pitch noise come from the front speaker or LCD it self. I'll try to help you finding the inverter located. I'll look around if I had a chance to open my 8525 again. Thank you
i am on my second tytn. I bought both used and in PRISTINE condition on Craigslist. The first one I bought had it, and so I asked for my refund from the seller. The second one (that I have now) just started the whining noise yesterday. I've had it since January 2008. It SUCKS!!!

PS: the noise is heard when I put my ear to the front speaker up close. It's weird. I heard it as soon as I move my ear to it. However, after about 5 seconds I don't hear it anymore. Then as soon as I move my ear away, I hear it again... It's like my ears become desensitized to it? lol

It is quite possible. It's like being in a room with an analog clock. You may have sat in that room 100 times, with the same noise around you, but for some reason this time you can hear the tick tick tick of the hand movement. Then just as quickly as you noticed it you can suddenly not hear it no matter how hard you try.
It can be a state of mind that results in your heightened sense of hearing or it can be as simple as your tympanic membrane being a little tighter.
Like the above poster said, I hear mine sometimes too, and other times I dont hear it at all.
To the OP, if the seller has your phone and your money, then either keep asking for your money back and if that doesnt work, email ebay or give him bad marks stating what he has done. If that doesnt work, you can threaten to take him to small claims court ( Judge Judy ). What is loud and irritating to you maybe not to him. Get you rmoney back. Hope this helps..
I think the reason the sound goes in and out is due to the fact that the screen istelf goes to sleep after a few seconds, or what ever you have set in the system...
My screen starting making this noise a few weeks ago. I love the functionality of this phone, but I am pretty much done with it. I can't stand all the tweeks that come with it.
I jumping to the iPhone as soon as they make the slinbox player for it... and they roll out the 3g functionality.
Don't mean to rant, but I am just frustrated.
I think the phone was dropped of damaged and that is why it gives off a high pitch sound.. Mine dropped onto a hard concrete floor. It looks and works perfectly fine but immediately after it emits a high pitched sound when ever the screen is on.
This is not normal for the TyTn which means it was damaged in some way prior to you getting it. Demand a refund.
Hi guys - the person I bought the phone from is still waiting for HTC to get back to him so he still has both the money and the phone.
Even if HTC say it's not a recognised fault, it's still unusable to me because it's really loud to me.
I'm not sure there's much I can do as I'm not exactly in a strong position to make demands.
Personally I think it would be unreasonable for him not to refund me but then he might not be a reasonable person.

The sound is definitely from the LCD - the speaker is fine once the screen is switched off (i.e. you can turn the screen off while on the phone and it's still fine).
I've had 3 8525's, one of them had this problem from day one. There have been a few threads about it as well.
I have just learned to turn my screen off during a call. It's real easy and quick, besides, you aren't looking at the phone when you are talking on it, and if you are, you probably can't hear the whine.
However, if you don't want to deal with the whine, then don't. Hopefully you paid through paypal and can just file a claim if the guy doesn't want to be fair. It is a defect and they should back you up.
If not, look to ebay and see if there is anything further you can do with them.
Call HTC yourself. Don't wait for him.
good luck
yes mine also does it i have just learnt to put up with it, but yes like drakkahn said you should ring HTC yourself and see what they have to say

Very good point. I don't know why I haven't thought of that.
Just off to call them now.
Thanks.

How to: REPLACE INCREDIBLE BLOWN SPEAKER

>>>>>>>>>>>perform at your own risk / will void warranty / I nor xda-developers will not be held responsible for any damage to you, your grandmother or your phone<<<<<<<<<<<<<
i siad it was coming and here it is. i couldn't find a video online for this so i decided to make my own. i take apart at least 100 phones a week and hadn't taken my phone apart yet so here it goes.
the nokia 6300 speaker is an almost identical replacement speaker for the incredible. for 2.99 with free shipping you can get this and fix it yourself. since i hate having to send my phone away just like the rest of the world. any questions comments or concerns let me know. here is the link to the ebay seller and the youtube video. i hope you enjoy.
EBAY SPEAKER LINK
my grandma is already broken.
Nice I may just do this just to clean the camera lense its loaded with dust.
Thanks for the vid. The instructions worked great. Got speaker and tools for $2.99 shipped.
Great vid, I clicked on the link and it said it was removed. Any other way to buy this speaker?
I was able to get the parts from "global parts direct" or something had to order at least 5, but the total came out to around 10 dollars.
Replacement went smoothly and I'm still wondering what caused the speaker to blow out.

thanks, this is a great post
now if we could only find a good UPGRADED speaker for like $5 that would be sweet lol.
Does the nokia speaker have the same audio quality or what?

I was just thinkin the same thing.
I'm not sure how to describe the sound from the nokia speaker, but I feel like it makes my phone pulse more when sound is playing. It still as loud, but it still sounds better than a blown speaker.
did this and now phone cant find a network? wifi and everything else work fine
tried putting in old speaker and going with no speaker.
any help?
Is there a significant advantage to buying the Nokia speaker over the Incredible replacement speakers that you can also find on eBay? Aside from price of course. My speaker just blew and replacing the speaker beats buying a new phone, especially since the only replacement phone I'd be able to afford would be a disappointment after having an Incredible.

quick fix blown speaker

Hello crew,
I didn't want to RMA my nexus so decided to attempt and fix it. I was thinking of replacing the speakers with anything I could find then one night I decided to open it and looked inside and thought something to fit this is going to be another challenge. So one thing I wasn't going to do was RMA the unit I rather listen only via headphones than to RMA so I thought how can it be fixed.
I simply heard the blown speaker as there are two and decided to just pressed the "Blown" one, and surprisingly it fixed it.
Thought I should share to those having similar issues please let me know of this works for you.
Why dont you want to rma? They send you a new device and you only send yours once your got the new one..

The speakers on the N7 are pretty fragile i already had to do the wallmart switch a roo once already. If you want to jam tunes without headphones use a external speaker like itour
Imo keep the N7 speaker under 100%, 80% max. A blown speaker and the acompaning distortion is hideous and will drive you crazy.

The speakers are easily removed. It won't be long before aftermarket ones become available. So I wouldn't get bent out of shape if I had a blown speaker.

i just fixed my speaker issue
as i noticed, its the left speaker that is spoil, right speaker perfectly fine.
placed a folded piece of small paper on top of left spoil speaker, then close the case.
the paper press the spoil speaker, so it wont make sound.
sounds good, no more distortion anymore, volume is good too.
but my speaker become mono speaker now. barely notice it tough

Google themselves would happily do that but not j&r they wanted me to send and it and they told me they where also currently out of stock so that I would have to wait until they received some stock in.
I also didn't want to send it in as I have heard of others sending there's in as much as three times, mine only had a blown speaker. No screen lift no light bleed. I didn't want to take any chances
For the time being this has fixed my nexus and I'm a happy camper now, if it blows up again then I am sure replacements would become available

Should I get a replacement?

Hey guys. Finally said good bye to old champion Galaxy S2 and now on Nexus 4! Love the device. However, I'm in a situation where I need to decide if I should get a replacement or not.
- I do hear that buzz sound in earpiece (not loud though - sometimes its not there)
- Rattling sound -- it is related to lens I realize
Is it worth it to get replacement (given replaced device may be in the same boat lol). Lots of people are reporting these issues.
the buzz sound...I hope its not going to increase in future?
Rattling sound -- I don't really care about that. However, I do go to gym and run. Can it damage camera?
Let me know your thoughts
I hate restoring backups and configuring everything all over again. (including wasting the screen protector lol)

The rattling in the camera is normal. Auto shutter or some **** that moves. Its normal. The buzzing is not. Some have them some don't. If you can't ignore it replace it. You paid for a phone don't buzz so don't put up with it unless you don't feel its a big deal.

I bought my phone on launch day. I feel like my buzzing has become worse over time. And it gets worse the fewer bars I have (I recently traveled to a different state with worse coverage and the buzzing became annoying and would get worse right before it dropped a call). I'd consider RMAing it. However, even the new ones have the problem, as you can attest to. I'm probably going to RMA my phone at some point, I'm just lazy.
Sent from my Nexus 4
I got replacement device and it still has the same issue!! even worse than the original one. So disappointed I love nexus but can't keep up with this week after week replacement.
will be sending device back for refund. Ahh what other phone is next. Not sure lol wait for S4 or try Z10
The rattle you hear isn't the camera.
It's the little thing you have to press to eject the simcard.
If u eject the simcard you can put a little piece of paper or something like that behind it and it stops rattling
Do this at your own risk!

If the issues are actually affecting you then get a replacement, Google send you the replacement first before you actually send your defective unit in so you dont have to worry about being without a phone.

Nexus 4 Ear piece problem

just got my Nexus 4 from service center. 2 to 3 cars went over my phone when it fell off from my pocket. replaced my battery, front screen and back glass...
Now the phone is working properly except my ear piece where when i get call from other person i wont be able to hear the other person voice loudly. The voice isnt loud enough to hear properly.
I had taken to service center and he tried replacing new ear piece but he told its not ear piece problem and told me that its motherboard fault. n has to replace the whole motherboard which would cost 10k which is approximately 170$. which i dont think i have money to spend after spending 8.5k (140$) a week back.
Guys please let me know if there is any way to increase the volume through any custom roms or something.
Please gimme some suggestion and thanks for the time in going through this.
