Nexus 4 Ear piece problem - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

just got my Nexus 4 from service center. 2 to 3 cars went over my phone when it fell off from my pocket. replaced my battery, front screen and back glass...
Now the phone is working properly except my ear piece where when i get call from other person i wont be able to hear the other person voice loudly. The voice isnt loud enough to hear properly.
I had taken to service center and he tried replacing new ear piece but he told its not ear piece problem and told me that its motherboard fault. n has to replace the whole motherboard which would cost 10k which is approximately 170$. which i dont think i have money to spend after spending 8.5k (140$) a week back.
Guys please let me know if there is any way to increase the volume through any custom roms or something.
Please gimme some suggestion and thanks for the time in going through this.

GREAT!...handset speaker went out again..

man...is this a defect on all T-Mobile wings?!? This is my third t-mobile wing with the handset speaker that went out. Is there a site that sells replacement handset speakers, cause i know how to take apart the wing and replace the speaker?
ugh..this sucks, now i have to use speakerphone.
I've never had my speaker go bad. Weird.
Do you mean the internal phonespeaker (the one you press against your right ear ) or the wired one? Oh wait, you're talking about taking things apart - hmm I guess you might try calling one of the HTC repair centres? Are you within your warranty? I think you must be, because most htc phones ship with 24 months of warranty.
I don't know which speaker you're talking about but my external one went out couple weeks ago and had to get a new phone from T-Mobile. It would make sounds but it was very "scratchy".
the one you put your ear on....freakng sucks
Hmm...
I have had my Wing since last June..
I work in a rugged area..Geotechnical Engineering & Field..working with lot of dirty & nasty materials..and I frequently clean my phone with a wet cloth(which is probably rather foolish)
The handset's receiver speaker works fine on mine.. the speakerphone on the back is not as clear..too much reverberation or something... but the headset is probably the best way to hear calls.
Anyways... with all the crap I put my phone through.. I don't notice any difference in either of the speakers performance from the first day I bought it.
Maybe you just had some bad luck?

Annoying whining noise from screen - where do I stand?

Hi folks,
I thought I'd get some opinions from folks here regarding the screen whine issue that some LCD screens get.
I recently bought a replacement Tytn off ebay after breaking my screen on mine. When it arrived it looked fine. I put it on charge and started cleaning it. That night I find out it's got a high pitched whine making it almost unusable.
I've sent it back to the seller and asked for a refund but he says he's contacted HTC to find out if it's a recognised fault or not. If it's not something that HTC acknowledge then he's going to make me make arrangements to pick it up from him.
Does anyone know if this is a recognised fault with the phone?
AFAIK, I have got some experience with some other handheld, it appear the pitch noise come from LCD inverter. seen some picth noise in early production of O2 Atom, old handera handheld. even nokia e61 generates pitch noise if you listen it closely. what I can not confirm is where the LCD inverter located, in mainboard or in LCD modul it self. So I can ot tell you which one is broken.
Well, it's just my opinion.
Thanks for the input tianz.
I've found loads of info on Google about it. It appears to be quite common with some of the older mobile phones.
Is it reasonable to expect me to have to accept a phone which has an audible whining noise to it?
Well... actually it's up to you, If you find the whining noise is too loud for your ear maybe you should return it while you can. As my experience when I had Handera with whining noise, I had return it. but when the replacement came back, the whining noise get worse and the company said that there's no problem at all with my Handera.
Later on I found out what cause the whining noise, and actually very simple to fix it, just find the inverter ?? (sorry I don't know what they call it in english, It's ferit core and copper wire wrapped around it) and put some wax from the candle or you can use glue.
And again, I don't know where exactly the inverter located in Hermes device, or maybe they use different model of inverter in Hermes.
So, It's up to you. I hope my answer will satisfied you. Thank you
Unfortunately I bought the phone off ebay and the guy isn't keen to refund me - although he currently has both phone and my money.
He says it's not that loud/irritating so I'm not sure what to do.
I've just dealt with it. The whine is only there when the LCD screen is on. My 8525 phone is exactly 1 year old. It can be irritating though, so I use the earbuds whenever I can.

Unfortunately for me the guy that's selling me the phone doesn't appear to agree that it's annoying:
=========================================================
"I have tried the phone and whilst it is just possible to hear a noise if I put my ear to the screen (why ayone would need to do that I have no idea) there is no audible noise when the phone is held to the ear as used in a normal phone call"
=========================================================
I can hear it loud and clear even at arms length - the phone doesn't even need to be near my head!

That's the problem, he doesn't want to refund. He wants me to keep the phone so he doesn't have to deal with it.
if you do have the phone in your hand, please confirm the pitch noise come from the front speaker or LCD it self. I'll try to help you finding the inverter located. I'll look around if I had a chance to open my 8525 again. Thank you
i am on my second tytn. I bought both used and in PRISTINE condition on Craigslist. The first one I bought had it, and so I asked for my refund from the seller. The second one (that I have now) just started the whining noise yesterday. I've had it since January 2008. It SUCKS!!!

PS: the noise is heard when I put my ear to the front speaker up close. It's weird. I heard it as soon as I move my ear to it. However, after about 5 seconds I don't hear it anymore. Then as soon as I move my ear away, I hear it again... It's like my ears become desensitized to it? lol

It is quite possible. It's like being in a room with an analog clock. You may have sat in that room 100 times, with the same noise around you, but for some reason this time you can hear the tick tick tick of the hand movement. Then just as quickly as you noticed it you can suddenly not hear it no matter how hard you try.
It can be a state of mind that results in your heightened sense of hearing or it can be as simple as your tympanic membrane being a little tighter.
Like the above poster said, I hear mine sometimes too, and other times I dont hear it at all.
To the OP, if the seller has your phone and your money, then either keep asking for your money back and if that doesnt work, email ebay or give him bad marks stating what he has done. If that doesnt work, you can threaten to take him to small claims court ( Judge Judy ). What is loud and irritating to you maybe not to him. Get you rmoney back. Hope this helps..
I think the reason the sound goes in and out is due to the fact that the screen istelf goes to sleep after a few seconds, or what ever you have set in the system...
My screen starting making this noise a few weeks ago. I love the functionality of this phone, but I am pretty much done with it. I can't stand all the tweeks that come with it.
I jumping to the iPhone as soon as they make the slinbox player for it... and they roll out the 3g functionality.
Don't mean to rant, but I am just frustrated.
I think the phone was dropped of damaged and that is why it gives off a high pitch sound.. Mine dropped onto a hard concrete floor. It looks and works perfectly fine but immediately after it emits a high pitched sound when ever the screen is on.
This is not normal for the TyTn which means it was damaged in some way prior to you getting it. Demand a refund.
Hi guys - the person I bought the phone from is still waiting for HTC to get back to him so he still has both the money and the phone.
Even if HTC say it's not a recognised fault, it's still unusable to me because it's really loud to me.
I'm not sure there's much I can do as I'm not exactly in a strong position to make demands.
Personally I think it would be unreasonable for him not to refund me but then he might not be a reasonable person.

The sound is definitely from the LCD - the speaker is fine once the screen is switched off (i.e. you can turn the screen off while on the phone and it's still fine).
I've had 3 8525's, one of them had this problem from day one. There have been a few threads about it as well.
I have just learned to turn my screen off during a call. It's real easy and quick, besides, you aren't looking at the phone when you are talking on it, and if you are, you probably can't hear the whine.
However, if you don't want to deal with the whine, then don't. Hopefully you paid through paypal and can just file a claim if the guy doesn't want to be fair. It is a defect and they should back you up.
If not, look to ebay and see if there is anything further you can do with them.
Call HTC yourself. Don't wait for him.
good luck
yes mine also does it i have just learnt to put up with it, but yes like drakkahn said you should ring HTC yourself and see what they have to say

Very good point. I don't know why I haven't thought of that.
Just off to call them now.
Thanks.

A FIX for the WINGS lousy loudspeaker NFFAH

First off, first post but long time LURKER
Second, NFFAH=Not for faint at heart
Third, THe FIX: I got tired of all the guurgles, pops and lousy sound from the wings loudspeaker. The speakerphone was useless and that just was bull****.
Removed the old loudspeaker and observed the 2 gold tabs that made the actual contact on the circuit board. Went thru my cell phone junk box looking for something similar in size (I am a pack rat so I have every cell phone I have ever owned and a few I got off buddies that no longer worked too.) Found an old Samsung A707 that always had good speaker sound and the speaker itself would fit into the wings slot with no cutting on the wings case. Using a low watt soldering iron I removed the gold tabs from the old wing speaker and GENTLY attached them to the A707 speaker. It slipped right into the wing and wow the new(old) speaker is not as loud as the old speaker but I can hear everything now on the wing. MUsic sounds alot better and I can use the speakerphone now and actually tell what people are saying. All this on a volume setting of 5 on the replacement speaker.
Bottom line...............the speaker the wing ships with totally and completely SUCKS.
This goes a little beyond a reg hack. LOL
Nice work. I'll be shipping my wing to you shortly
Dude, awesome!
I actually have an old Samsung A707 laying around. So I'm going to do this as soon as I get some free time.
I'm excited!

Phone mic oversensitivity [FIXED]

I take no credit for this, I remember seeing it in a thread here (which I can't find now). Been plagued with alot of background noise always coming thru the mic whenever I call from anything less than a silent environment. Someone here suggested a small piece of tape placed over the mic hole on the inside of the back cover with a small pin hole poked thru effectively attenuating the amount of sound coming thru to the mic. It works! Took it one step further though cuz I always seem to get alot of resonance from the cover itself so I cut a 1×1 piece of duct tape & put it on the inside of the cover in the area opposite the battery. Its just enough to dampen the resonance & improved call quality to everyone so far. All this after setting everything to evrc-b too.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one having this problem. I've been fighting with Verizon over this issue since I bought the phone. They think I'm crazy and wouldn't give me a replacement of a different brand. They've replaced the phone 3 times now even though I told them it isn't defective, and it's more of a design flaw of the phone.

I will be giving this a try. During many of my calls people say where are you at, just be cause it is crazy loud on there side. The only plus side, my wife never calls to talk to me anymore during the day.

In call volume grrrrrr

So I saved up an got Nexus 6P hoping to keep it for 2-3 years. Exactly 14 months, you guessed it no warranty left, the volume while I am on a call is really really low. I can hear someone when I am in a quiet room otherwise it is not possible to make out what the other person is saying. While driving a car, in even a slightly noisy room I have to turn on speakerphone to make a call.
I tried putting a tape on the back mike, not using protective cover, someone suggested I hard reset. All tried to no use :crying:
I am running stock and at this point desperate to find a fix. can't afford another phone and this one is no good other than in my bedroom :crying::crying:
Someone is saying replace the top speaker. I don't want to resort to that unless you guys think that is the only option.

We can be friends. I have the same problem. Don't bother changing the speaker. I did and it makes no difference. Did you install any sound mods like I did? In all probability, it's something to do with the sound chip in the motherboard. God knows I've tried everything. This might sound crazy but I'm about to get a second hand unit. I haven't finished with this phone and can't do without front facing speakers unless I'm prepared to pay a lot for the pixel 2. It feels like someone has taken away your half finished dinner.
You can try this if on MM or Nougat. Worked pretty good for me. https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/mod-boost-call-handset-volume-t3329419/page7
Bluetooth headset or some cheap headphones with mic.
Finally got back my top speaker. I took the phone to a repair shop and the guy unblocked the speaker grill. He said it's basically an accumulation of dust, sweat or maybe spillage. He used some type of solvent. Now it's back to normal. So, nothing to do with speaker if anyone else has this problem. I tried compressed air previously but it's not effective.

I had the same issue, along with my voice being muffled on the other side off the call. I used an air compressor and that works perfect for me. It was like night and day. it's a pretty powerful air compressor so maybe that's why it worked for me and not you. Or maybe you had gunk that needed a solvent. Either way it's worth a try to use an air compressor. I would be careful not to use too much pressure cuz I'm sure that could cause some damage at a certain point.

Thanks for the input. My gunk couldn't be removed even with an electrical compressed air gun (don't know the term). A friend tried earlier. Really glad I came across this repair shop. Was ready to buy another 6p.
