A FIX for the WINGS lousy loudspeaker NFFAH - Wing, P4350 General

First off, first post but long time LURKER
Second, NFFAH=Not for faint at heart
Third, THe FIX: I got tired of all the guurgles, pops and lousy sound from the wings loudspeaker. The speakerphone was useless and that just was bull****.
Removed the old loudspeaker and observed the 2 gold tabs that made the actual contact on the circuit board. Went thru my cell phone junk box looking for something similar in size (I am a pack rat so I have every cell phone I have ever owned and a few I got off buddies that no longer worked too.) Found an old Samsung A707 that always had good speaker sound and the speaker itself would fit into the wings slot with no cutting on the wings case. Using a low watt soldering iron I removed the gold tabs from the old wing speaker and GENTLY attached them to the A707 speaker. It slipped right into the wing and wow the new(old) speaker is not as loud as the old speaker but I can hear everything now on the wing. MUsic sounds alot better and I can use the speakerphone now and actually tell what people are saying. All this on a volume setting of 5 on the replacement speaker.
Bottom line...............the speaker the wing ships with totally and completely SUCKS.

This goes a little beyond a reg hack. LOL
Nice work. I'll be shipping my wing to you shortly

Dude, awesome!
I actually have an old Samsung A707 laying around. So I'm going to do this as soon as I get some free time.
I'm excited!

Rear Speaker (Ringer) Dead! Where to find in UK?

Hi everyone.
The Ringer (Rear Speaker) of my Charmer has died. Does anybody know where I can find one in UK?
Or does anybody here sell this kind of stuff?
Thanks.
well you may try any speaker that can play loudly enough. in my old sony cmd-j6 i was using speaker from tetris game and it was playing louder than original with less noise
btw, what did you do that speaker is dead? i would recommend you to use multimeter to check if it is realy burned down, speaker has nothing inside that you could be damaged (of course, you can have burned down coil or damaged membrane)
P.S.: speakers do not like needels
Yeah, i've already checked with a multimeter. The speaker's coil is burnt out. I had a really loud ringtone (preamplified). I was using tomtom and while the tomtom was speaking, the phone rang and I suspect this caused a spike or something like that and the coil got burnt.
Needless to say, I won't be using that ringtone anymore.
And the problem with using any other speaker is that I don't know which one would fit the housing in the case as it is a pretty tight fit.
Any advice?
Thanks.

imho the best idea is to buy hardly damaged charmer (maybe prophet and other similar devices will use the same or at least simliar speaker). devices with broken display are cheap, coz they are useless for their owners.
otherwise, you can modify the plastic part that is carrying antenna tin. imho there is enough space to make speaker hole bigger and insert different speaker - the best way will be to consult right parametres with skilled electrotechnician...
Thanks for the info. I looked up on ebay and at the moment, couldn't find any old or broken charmer. Will go and ask at T-mobile shop first, if they have it and if they charge something like 40 quid, won't get it.
Then will start going for other options like modifying the case to fit any other speaker.
Anyway, contract about to finish in 3 months or so, so maybe will just leave it like that and get a new phone when contract finishes.....
My speaker broke the other day too!... wish i could get a replacement...
i have found this one:-

Thanks for looking jameslovell. But this one does not fit the charmer, and besides, i gave up looking two days ago and bought a random speaker and melted/reshaped inside chasis to fit that one
Now working fine
Thanks everyone for your help!

GREAT!...handset speaker went out again..

man...is this a defect on all T-Mobile wings?!? This is my third t-mobile wing with the handset speaker that went out. Is there a site that sells replacement handset speakers, cause i know how to take apart the wing and replace the speaker?
ugh..this sucks, now i have to use speakerphone.
I've never had my speaker go bad. Weird.
Do you mean the internal phonespeaker (the one you press against your right ear ) or the wired one? Oh wait, you're talking about taking things apart - hmm I guess you might try calling one of the HTC repair centres? Are you within your warranty? I think you must be, because most htc phones ship with 24 months of warranty.
I don't know which speaker you're talking about but my external one went out couple weeks ago and had to get a new phone from T-Mobile. It would make sounds but it was very "scratchy".
the one you put your ear on....freakng sucks
Hmm...
I have had my Wing since last June..
I work in a rugged area..Geotechnical Engineering & Field..working with lot of dirty & nasty materials..and I frequently clean my phone with a wet cloth(which is probably rather foolish)
The handset's receiver speaker works fine on mine.. the speakerphone on the back is not as clear..too much reverberation or something... but the headset is probably the best way to hear calls.
Anyways... with all the crap I put my phone through.. I don't notice any difference in either of the speakers performance from the first day I bought it.
Maybe you just had some bad luck?

Sound on the HERO

Hi guys, I have diamond, I buy it my phone in end of 2008 hehehe...
And, the first thing I think is (damn man, this phone is alsome, i guess the sound is fuc**** great) .. so when i put some music and give a play!
I sayed - WTF? Damn speaker !!!
I broken my heart with this DIAMOND (causa any phone like nokia basics, samsung, and other .. HTC old models) have a GREAT GREAT SOUND!!!
So, i like this hero, anyone can tell me if this new model have a GREAT speaker or its the same....???
Somebody have a tested?
(sry about my english...its not my first language)
So.. its this. thx guys! c ya!
Happy 2010!
eh, i had a diamond as well, and well how should i put it, the speaker sound of the hero is like 2x louder & more clear
actually, the diamond's speaker is crap compared to hero's
hopefully that clears things up
I could say that my new Telus Hero definitely impressed me initially when I played a random MP3 and it started playing. The sound felt amplified, probably due to the way the speaker's designed to project outward when the phone is on a table or surface..and holding it in your hand it reaches both ears very nicely. Of course, it's got a tinny feeling, though that's with any phone without anything hooked up to it
I'd say it's quite an impressive phone, I stepped up from my ol' reliable Nokia N95-3 for this. Very pleased with what it can do.
Unlike other phones (like the Touch Diamond) the Hero has a seperate "loudspeaker" on the back of the phone, as well as the speaker above the screen. It is the slot to the left of the camera. That is where non-phone sounds, such as music and sat nav instructions, are routed to if you do not have connected headphones. It can also be used as a loudspeaker for the phone.
So the sound is much louder and better than that coming out of the normal speaker designed to be held against your ear. It is loud enough that I can clearly hear my sat nav instructions when in the car. But hi-fi it aint! You still need to use head or ear phones to get a decent sound.

Phone mic oversensitivity [FIXED]

I take no credit for this, I remember seeing it in a thread here (which I can't find now). Been plagued with alot of background noise always coming thru the mic whenever I call from anything less than a silent environment. Someone here suggested a small piece of tape placed over the mic hole on the inside of the back cover with a small pin hole poked thru effectively attenuating the amount of sound coming thru to the mic. It works! Took it one step further though cuz I always seem to get alot of resonance from the cover itself so I cut a 1×1 piece of duct tape & put it on the inside of the cover in the area opposite the battery. Its just enough to dampen the resonance & improved call quality to everyone so far. All this after setting everything to evrc-b too.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one having this problem. I've been fighting with Verizon over this issue since I bought the phone. They think I'm crazy and wouldn't give me a replacement of a different brand. They've replaced the phone 3 times now even though I told them it isn't defective, and it's more of a design flaw of the phone.

I will be giving this a try. During many of my calls people say where are you at, just be cause it is crazy loud on there side. The only plus side, my wife never calls to talk to me anymore during the day.

A possible fix to low in-call volume

Recently I found my Z3c had a dramatic drop in earpiece volume. I could barely hear the caller's voice when in a quiet surrounding (like office or home), and impossible to follow the talk when outside. This was quite annoying, because it's a phone and making calls is one of its essentials regardless of whatever extra functions added to it. So I did a lot of work trying to bring the volume back. I rooted the phone (eventually), tried some sound mod, and even worked on the mixer_paths.xml directly. None of these gave me any luck. As the problem seemed irrelevant to the software flaw at the stage, I was thinking about possible hardware cause.
The first thing I did was to open the top side flap, which covers the micro SD and USB. Then I made a call to my voicemail and compared the voice I heard from both the flap opening and the top speaker. I could tell immediately that the sound was much louder and clearer from the flap opening, while the sound from the top speaker was distant and isolated. Wait a sec...
From my research on posts, I was told that there is a film lying on the speakers to make the Z3c dust proof. You can see them through the speaker cuts. To allow the sound goes through it, the film has to be perforated. Could those tiny holes be blocked after spending time with dust, water and soap (yes I did wash my Z3c frequently, thanks Sony for the water proof!). A user did mention the volume on both speakers were much gained after removing those films. I don't want to go extreme, but that did give me a hint.
So I used a pair of tweezers, with pointed tips. I slightly scratched them on those films. Immediately the color changed from dark black to lighter gray. I kept scratching them and made the grey evenly, and made another call to the voicemail. Guess what...the earpiece volume was noticeably increased! Then I airbrushed those films and tried again, this time I could not tell the improvement, but the sound was loud enough that I could hear the voice even from a distance. Now the sound coming from the flap opening would also match with that from the top speaker. I would call it a success.
To summarize: what I did was simply cleaning those meshed films on the speakers, by scratching dust off them. These films can be penetrated if you pushed too hard, so please be gentle. And I'm not sure if this trick would work for others, I'm just sharing my experience, with a good wish that this could work for others who are also bothered by the low in-call volume as I was. Still, try those software fix as well, as the cause to the same phenomenon may be different.
Thanks for reading. Let me know your comments/thoughts/tricks and treats (Happy Halloween!)
Thanks for sharing, I have same issue --- did you test its waterproofing if it still works after cleaning the speaker's mesh?
Has anyone issue with the lower speaker? I actually tried to touch it, its very hollow --- are all units like this? Thank you.

done, so far great improvement with sound, i can hear the other person on the phone better --- but not sure about my bottom speaker, its very hollow.
This was one of the reasons why I'd sent in my phone. I thought the speaker was broken. Seems they've just cleaned or replaced that mesh because the volume works well on the returned phone.
Thanks for sharing :good::good:
I push chewing gum in to the grills and mic to clean them out.

wow.. it realy works... thanks a lot bro ... !!!
Thx for sharing I'll try it
How does such a thin layer of perforated material manage to block so much sound?
You're my hero!!!!!
I was about to send it back cause of the awfully low earpiece volume. Now that I have cleaned it it's even too loud!
Thanks mate I really appreciated it
Cheers:good:
Great tip bro. Immediate improvement to volume level. However I guess I pushed it further that the sound is now cracking at high volume when the phone rings.
But am still happy that I can hear the other party.
Good job man.
Those of you who are claiming this works, could you please go into your service menu (*#*#service#*#*) from your dialer and run the stereo speaker test? Do both speakers have the same volume output or is one significantly louder than the other?
Sent from the only flagship phone that actually fits in my hand... The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact
So, I'm almost embarrassed to report that I had no issues with my earpiece, but thought I'd give this method of "cleaning" it out a try. I used a piece of chewing gum to remove any dirt from the screen and almost immediately noticed a drastic DECREASE in output from that speaker. Now, calls sound hollow and tinny, and the stereo speaker affect is nearly gone because the top speaker is so much quieter.
I'm afraid that I somehow caused my top speaker to produce less sound by trying this method. I've tried to wipe away any sticky residue caused by the gum, but nothing seems to help. I can't send my phone back to Sony because it's been rooted and they wont honor the warranty. I can't believe that thin piece of speaker grill would actually be able to block sound. What now?
I managed to get higher volume by cleaning the upper speaker with a chewing-gum but my operation removed the thin grey layer. Do you think I've lost waterproof?

OK, thanks.
Has anyone tried replacing both speakers with Z3/Z3 dual/Z3+ ones? I was looking at the pictures of spare parts and it might be possible to put some of those in our Z3c, since the sound on Z3c is really low by default, and the ones on Z3 do sound quite louder.
I had same problem, could barely hear a phone call. I scrapped off the black material protecting the speaker now I can hear through the earpiece. I'm guessing now the phone is not water proof..
