In the future I think I may stay away from Asus products. I have had a lot of issues with them in the last several years. What has your experience been. To keep it simple to read please use a similar format as below.
Since mid to late 2010:
Asus G74 laptop:
- wired network port stopped working
- Touch pad stopped working
- Comes with software that is supposed to keep the drivers and software updated, it never worked. A quick internet search shows that no one's ever been able to get it to work. I haven't tried it recently, maybe I'll look into it.
Asus FT101 (Went through 3 unites):
- Had to exchange it twice in the first week. First time because it failed to boot on with on 24 hours. Second time it touch screen had issues with missing a lot of touches.
- After about a year or so the screen stopped working. I can Use HDMI it the device works but the screen won't display wont work (opened it up and the cable isn't loose).
- Keyboard dock battery stopped responding (taking or giving a charge)
- I don't recall if it had the slow memory IO issues, but I think it did.
Asus TF300 (went through 2 unites):
- First unite had to be exchanged again for touch screen issues. I couldn't even set up the device because phantom touches would open and close things all over the place and couldn't get it set up.
- Second TF300T worked, but like just about every Asus Tablet, until recently, had IO issues that seemd to get worse over time. It became painful to use at times. I still have it, aside from the IO issues it's a good device. I hope Android 4.3 will help it be a little letter with the IO issue.
- My TF300T does suffer from random reboots from time to time. Not very often, but it will on occasion reboot out of the blue.
Asus made Nexus 7 2013 (decide to keep, as other seem to have it worse):
- GPS issue as mentioned many places.
- Touchscreen grounding issue. If I'm not holding it in my hands (laying on table or mounted in car) it may stop responding to touches.
- My wireless charging work fine out of the box, but many have had issues. Some removed the back (at time putting a crack in it) to clean the contacts to get it working. Other have had multiple exchanges to get a unite that works out of the box.

This is my first experience with an Asus device and I'm not really enjoying it much either. After 2 replacements I finally got a device that doesn't have bad bleed or dead pixels but the colors seem slightly off, the bezel had multiple deformations that are visible in sunlight out of the box, and wireless charging doesn't work. No idea how I'm going to fix the latter, because I'm sure as hell not risking getting a worse screen in another replacement. A lot of little niggles with this device that really don't belong here especially with the higher retail price than last year's model.
Unfortunately I don't really have a choice since this is the first and only tablet that's ticked every box for me, unless apple is capable of miracles and releases a high-resolution iPad mini that isn't heavier and more expensive than last year's model.

I have read a few reports that wireless charging seem to have started working after initially not working, so keep trying. Some have removed the back cover and cleaned the coil areas and gotten the charging working. Maybe that is has cleared up on it own over time and why it has started to work for some.

I really doubt apple will meet those requirements.
Asus used to be one of the go to brands for motherboards.
I think they have not done as well with building complete units.
Asus build great motherboards. Aside from that their Products are all subpar IMO.
Heh, all of my ASUS products have malfunctioned, except for my Xonar DX and netbook. (knocking on wood)
ASUS motherboard (fried)
ASUS netbook (still working)
ASUS Transformer TF101 (speakers blew out)
ASUS Xonar DX (still working)
ASUS Google Nexus 7 (2012) (screen issues, slow emmc chip)
ASUS Google Nexus 7 (2013) (bad battery, malfunctioning screen, light bleed)
I've had the Asus g74sx ROG laptop. It ran awesome and the power was phenomenal.
I've had the Asus TF300T it had good quality EXCEPT a sub par nand that had to be bypassed.
I've had the Asus TF700 it had good quality EXCEPT a sub par nand that I knew about before purchase and bypassed.
I've had the Asus Nexus 7 2013 and I find it superb on every level so far.

They can if they want to, it's more of a question of whether it's possible to do so without eating into their profit margins and thus far it seems like that isn't the case. There's also the fact that the high resolution mini sales will significantly eat into regular ipad sales, so I don't see it happening this year. My best guess is that recent WSJ article is simply an attempt from Apple to have people on the fence hold off on purchasing Nexus 7s.
As far as the wireless charger is concerned, I really don't want to risk cracking the back cover opening it up since I don't use a case.
I had an m50sv from 2005 that has been in constant use and is now my linux media server. Started to get real hot a few years down the line, found out it had one of those faulty 8400m chips in it. Despite the high temps its been running strong and has yet to explode on me.
Asus TF101, still used alongside the N7 and my other devices,.
Zenbook ux32vd, my current laptop and is used for everything other than serious gaming, for which i use my desktop for.
Asus motherboards in all my computers, a few asus GPUs and xonar soundcards.
Had zero issues with all my Asus stuff, aside from the 8400m thing, but that was an Nvidia fault that affected all laptops with that chip in it.
I must say that I had SOME problems with Asus products, but not as much as I had with Gigabyte or Samsung and BenQ.
At this moment I have 3 PCs running with Asus motherboard, all of them are 3+ years old, my gfx card it's been overclocked since day 1 and still runs as the first day (3+ years old).
I got an ASUS router as well RT-N66U, best thing I've ever had in years, not even linksys gets close, and I have 2 Asus 24" IPS Screens that have 3+ years as well.
Also LG is another brand I have a lot of stuff and never had single problem.
Well, I'm glad to hear that some people have had little to no issues with their Asus products. I seem to have had to exchange products on several occasion and had issues pop up (GPS, touch screen issues on several tablets). I just think their QC is not up to snuff.
I'm glad the the IO issues seems to have been fixed, but these many GPS and touch screen issues is just too much, i think. Especiall in light of the issues I have had with just about every Asus product I have owned.
I do have two Asus Monitors that I have had no issues with for over a year. I also think they are the make the best motherboards.
Perhaps next time they make a seemingly nice tablet or Nexus device I wait before buying and not be an early adopter.
Actually, ASUS tied for most reliable laptop after Apple:

Yes,I was aware of that. They have good scores for their laptops, but also are a small portion of the computer market. I would get an other Asus laptop when the time comes.
But most of my issues have been with their tablets. I'm sure it not all of them, but their QC seems lacking on all the Asus tablets I've owned. Maybe it's bad luck on my part. But at least this N7 2013 is the best one so far, despite my GPS not always being 100% and the grounding issue I'm experiencing.
I hear they be making the next Nexus 10. If it's a compelling device I may be interested, but will not likely be an early adopter.
I like Asus they are usually a good bang for the buck devices, I'm just a little iffy on their QC.

Yeah, I agree with you... this is really absurd. Now we have people trying to create their own grounding solutions. I used to love Asus but my most recent laptop is Samsung and I am very happy.
I love Android, I love the Nexus ( I have an original one as well as new one but it doesn't work). I love Google. But this experience (I have exchanged my Nexus 5 times so far and still do not have a good unit) has left me thinking of giving Apple another try. They have had issues in the past with quality control like all other companies, but not nearly on this scale. I cannot believe I exchanged my device 5 times and still it doesn't work. I am not content to wait for Google to come out with a "Fix". In the meanwhile, 14 day return policy will expire. No thanks... I will keep exchanging until working unit or I will give up, keep my original Nexus and wait for iPad Mini Retina.
I purchased several ASUS products and I am satisfied with most of them. I forgot what's the year I bought them though.
1. ASUS EeePC 1000HE
Still remember the netbook age? Over 10 hours of battery life and the portability are very impressive. Bought one for school when I was still in college so that I can play around online when having boring lectures. No issue with this netbook at all.
2. ASUS EeePC 1005HA
Basically I sold my 1000HE for this one becuase of the slick design. I love it so much. Still rocking 9 hours of battery life. No issue at all with this one too.
3. ASUS Maximus III Gene
Have been using this MB for more than 3 years. It's still rocking today. Paired with i7-870 and GTX460. No complaints.
4. ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity TF700T (with Keyboard Dock)
This is the one I had most issues with ASUS products. Having the famous I/O issue and screen lift up issue. The I/O issue issue is driving me nuts. I ended up selling the whole set.
5. ASUS VivoBook X202E
I sold my 1005HA recently and bought this one. Netbook is too slow for me now. So far the only issue is that the touch pad has a little bump on it. Quality control of ASUS is not doing a good job. Otherwise, no complaints for this device so far.
6. Nexus 7 (2013) 32GB
One of the most popular tablets now. I only encountered the touch issue once. Light bleed is not serious and it doesn't bother me at all. I can live with that. I had a Samsung tablet before and it has light bleed also. I believe this is a common problem for LCD now. I haven't met any other problem till now. No random reboot, no dead pixels, wireless charging working (with Samsung wireless charging pad), etc. I am very satisfied with it.
I love my asus stuff!
I have a LOT of Asus prodcuts. Probably more than the average user of this board
I started with 2 x83VB-X2s refurbed from tiger direct. They are both still running strong with little issues other than they need new batteries. They've been around for close to 7 years now. Discreet Nvidia, they are AWESOME.
ulFt20 - for my employer - worked great as a travel beast for 3 years until upgrade required. First gen i3, everything still works.
I bought a tf201 when the first came out. Issues out the wazuuuu. GPS was ****, wifi is not bad, screen showed some bleed, and I/O issues.
That being said, it still works, my dad dented the bezel of the tablet itself with a case of beer, and everything still works. Even bought the keyboard, it still works.
I bought an N53SV. Core i7, 6gb, nvidia 540M. Typing on it now. HEAVY, but I love it. Great for work, and some games, although not mega-portable.
Employer upgraded to the zenbook prime, and aside from an issue with the charger, which asus promptly replaced for us 3 times without payment on our end, it has been a dream, and is absolutely gorgeous!
COUNTLESS n66/AC66 routers. I hand these out as suggestions for clients for their unreal feature set, unbeatable speed, and ability to use custom firmware.
I build my recent gaming rig on an asus p8z77-i itx board, its unreal!
I have an M2N-sli deluxe running an old AMD X2 6000+ and it still runs like day one.
Buying into the first production run of products is ALWAYS risky. Remember Apple's iphone 4 bumper hand out deal. I have the nexus 7 2013, its my first nexus device (I run an S3 for a phone), and I've loved EVERY minute of owning it, even when I screw up a flash, I still love how easy it is to fix this thing.
Happy Owner here, of a nexus 7, and ALL things asus for the most part
Nothing but good things to say about Asus! By far my favorite tablet manufacturer! Hoping the rumors about the manufacturing the next N10 are true. If the N10 is made by Asus, then I'll own one of those too!
Asus Prime (TF201) 10.1" Tablet - still works great, gave it to my older sister Mothers Day, she uses it daily
Asus Infinity (TF700) 10.1" Tablet - still works great, still use it daily
Asus N7 FHD 7" Tablet - still works great, still use it daily
Asus RT-N66R wireless router - still works great, still use it daily

Amen. Plus their support sucks. They have caused physical damage to 2 of my devices over the past 3 years and would not own up to it.

http://www.squaretrade.com/laptop-reliability-1109/
You get one of the best 7" tablets around for 230$ and there is almost no delay in shipping and availability, of course that quality control can be on a very high level. Plus, most of the issues can be caused by kernel errors and not hardware.
I am at an hardware store internship and ASUS laptops are actually considered to be the most enduring ones.

Well, I've managed to find one and ordered a 32GB version. It should be arriving on Monday.
However, from all the negative 3.1-related threads I'm kind of regretting it now. Talk of battery drains, speaker issues, lags, random reboots, worse wifi, etc. is making me wish I'd held off or gone for something else (Acer Iconia?)
Please someone tell me that in the grand scheme of things, this is actually a bloody decent device!
Aside from a small bit of light leak mine is all good. What you're experiencing is people that aren't satisfied will be more likely to speak up than people who are satisfied with the devices. These issues are things that have happened to certain users but its not like your device will automatically present all these symptoms. In the grand scheme of things this is a really nice device. If you are looking for something where everything is perfect and there are no issues, you might have to wait a while longer until honeycomb matures a bit more and the 2nd Gen of android tabs come out (i don't really count gb tabs as officially supported android tabs)

While I can't speak for anyone else I bought mine sight unseen and could not be happier.
I'm rooted on 3.1 and overclocked and while kernel is a little rough I am loving it. Only gonna get better. Besides, stock kernel is an option.
Light bleed...not an issue for me. (Haven't noticed so I don't care)
Random reboots. May have happened overnight but I haven't seen any.
I haven't killed my battery yet. Lowest I've gotten was last night to 23% but I was flashing **** like crazy. (No dock btw)
Lots of storage.
Videos play great now.
Speakers are fine to me. (They make it so I can easily hear what I want to hear)
Screen is gorgeous.
Kills the zoom as far as I can tell.
I am happy and with all the development going on I am only going to get happier.

No battery drains, speaker issues, or wifi problems with mine. Have had it randomly reboot on me once though. And I've seen the Xoom lag way worse. Overall, this is the best tablet currently available. I wouldn't touch an Acer product with a 10 yard stick.
Stick with 3.0 if you don't like all the problems with 3.1. Though, I'm using it and am only bothered by the browser.
I just ordered mine too and don't yet have it. I had what you are having and even cancelled the order at one point in favor of the a500. After cancelling, I did a pretty thorough look at the Acer a500. Even though it has better speakers, a USB 2.0 port, and vibrate, it's downsides are too much to take.
I don't want something that heavy or bulky. It has known GPS problems. The battery life is pretty mediocre when compared to the Transformer. And, currently anyway, the development for this tablet is much more promising.
Don't worry about the bleed issues. That seems to be the biggest one people complain about. Just keep exchanging until you get one with minimal bleeding.
It is a bloody fantastic machine! Love it, it has been used pretty much non-stop since the 3 of May!
Excellent piece of hardware - I only got the 16GB version, so plan is to purchase a good microSDHC card soon - 32GB version.
I am running on the latest version (3.1) and I could not be happier. Got the dock a week ago and I amazed on how much I use it. Often combo-use the touch screen and keyboard for interactions with the transformer.
I game, surf, read, watch movies and some hobby software development. Plan is to soon be able to actually develop on it as well
I know the experience migth vary, but for me, this piece of wonderful wholesome goodness could not be better, unless someone covered it in batter and deep fried it!
- Authored on my transformer
The fact that you can sell it technically used for the price of new must mean that there are around 10,000 people a month that like theirs.

Aside from a small amount of light bleed, that is only noticeable if you are sitting in the dark with the screen ramped up to maximum brightness, I haven't had any problems with my mine. It's a great bit of kit and the dock takes it to a completely different level. No regrets at all about buying mine,

I don't need a signature.
16 hours off the charger and I'm at 52%. Granted, a good deal of that has been idle, I haven't played with it for 16 hours straight, but that is in line with what I expect from a tablet -- mess with it some, lay it down for hours, and pick it up again later with a decent amount of juice left. Mine creaks a bit in the upper right corner, and I notice one small spot of light bleed under perfectly dark conditions, but otherwise, I'm glad I bought it. Won't find a better value anywhere else.
Thanks for the feedback
Wow, filled up a page in less than an hour!
Thanks guys. It IS good to hear the other side of the coin, and I completely get the "self selection bias" point.
I have less remorse than I did an hour ago, so thank you everyone.
Now I'm looking forward to it arriving again
I am thrilled with the TF!!! And let me just say that I am very hard to please when it comes to electronics.
I had the G-Slate and the TF whips it, hands down.
The Acer tab is alright, but it is wayyy too bulky and still not quite as good as the TF IMO.
I am using 3.1 and although it is not as fast as 3.0 when I had it overclocked it still works fine. I haven't tried the 3.1 oc kernel that got posted today yet.

Yeah only two things to really be concerned about is the light bleed, if it's massive, and battery life after 3.1.
For the $400 price, the IPS display, and all other tablets sucking, I guess I'm happy with the Transformer. But I got a few problems.
My first transformer had a defective screen that was separated from the glass making the back light visible on one side and causing the glass to bend.
I'm on my second Transformer now. It's got back light bleeding, which doesn't bother me too much. But it's also got a quarter inch circle on the screen that is brighter than the rest of the screen. Looks like something is wrong with the panel there.
So now I got to return a second Transformer. And this is such a pain because I got to time it right with when they have something in inventory or just be without a the tablet for a while like last time.
There are other build quality issues. The back plastic edges are not flush with the metal bezel, some corners are popped up a little.
And the speaker volume is not balance (fearing this might be hardware problem too since its still not fixed from the 3.1 update).
I was having some performance issues and found I had to reboot the tablet often to refresh the performance. Then I started removing some applications. After removing TweetCaster Pro, suddenly the performance improved significantly.
I seem to get a lot more keyboard lag (ASUS or Android keyboard) with the stock browser after the 3.1 update. It's a little disappointing.
I've got gripes. But I think I'll be keeping the Transformer (though definitely need to go through another exchange). The A500 doesn't have an IPS display and is very heavy. And I suspect it'll have it's share of software problems too. Same thing for the Xoom. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 has it's own quality build issues (it's glass likes to pop out of the bezel like the Transformer's back side is doing on mine) and it's lack of micro SD is a huge disappointment.
The state of Android tablets is still in a rather sad state. But we are still kinda early adopters and it's the price we pay.
PS. Almost forgot to mention, the GPS on my Transformer doesn't work at all. Though this really doesn't bother me since I don't use it anyway.
Yikes! I swear I think there are just bad batches out there, that can be the only explanation of these wild swings in quality. I guess the OP needs to cross his fingers and hope he gets one of the good ones.

THIS so much.
I am REALLY surprised with how much damn COMPLAINING there is across these boards. My unit came perfect apart from a small bit of light bleed at the bottom.
And best of all? 3.1 DOUBLED the functionality of the tablet. I was super happy with it when I got it, and then the update made it feel like a new tablet.
Besides the light bleed, my only problem with it is that it doesn't seem to do 1080p output through the miniHDMI jack.
Other than that, it's perfect and one of the best technology purchases I have ever made.
TBH, when I purchased mine I read all the complaining about problems and also was worried. But when I opened it, plugged it in, and used it, I was blown away and all my worries were destroyed.
Seriously, it's an amazing product that benefits even more by the dock and by Honeycomb 3.1. Even if new tablets with better hardware come out, this tablet is going to retain its uniqueness and power through the ever-increasing capabilities of Honeycomb (and eventually Ice Cream Sandwich!) and because of its fantastic Dock.
EDIT: Please don't get me wrong, by "complaining" I don't mean that people are whining about illegitimate problems. Problems DO exist, but it's as the person I quoted said: it's just biased because all the people without problems are enjoying their tablets and not looking for solutions on this forum.
The only "problem" that I feel IS complaining is people who whine about how their tablets "creak". It's like the most minor problem of anything, and yet there are people who have returned their tablets and won't buy another one just because their first one makes a small creak sound when you press on it.
Remember this device is on the edge of tech. New product. Growing pains in manufacturing, etc. There will be returns.
But I can tell you that I have been on the edge of tech since before the IBM PC. And I have never had a "toy" that brought such amazement and sheer joy. Run google body on it (while you have two email accounts updating and google voice updating while you have a map with the latest earthquakes updating while you have a maps window open while you have conversion software to convert anything to anything and gps navigation at your fingertips with Copilot Live) and prepare to be amazed. All while listening to music.
I have no problems others than the sound is not very good. I think it will get better with updates; there are $25 solutions to this problem.

I had two with bleed and speaker balance issues. one experience the frame separation too and it got worse the longer I had it. for me the bleed was noticeable even at lowest brightness sine I read books with black bg and red text. one had way more bleed than the other.
my third try is coming on Tuesday. I've decided to give up using the tf as an ebook reader and keep it limited to comics or reading in daylight.
as for the crappy speakers, sound quality and balance issues, ive just decided that for what it offers at the price its good enough. plus i have my archos 101 as back up. crappier build and screen but better av playback quality.
the tf is a great device, if that weren't true I wouldn't give it three tries. I just really wish the qc was better.
I've had mine since April 28th and it's fine. No problems to speak of except minor light bleed, which doesn't bother me at all. 3.1 even improved my battery performance, so I'm kind of surprised to hear about the other issues here. Enjoy your TF and post your thoughts after you receive.
so the title says, whos thinking of getting one? reports say acer want it to be available for around £200 . thats just £160 for me...yaaaaay Jb 4.1 tegra 3 microsd micro usb... classic iconia godlyness lol

Hmm depending on the reviews i might have to pick one up
Trying to decied between this and nexus 7 acer has sd slot but nexus has good dev support hmmm
If I want the phone interface, I'll pick up my phone. If this thing gets decent dev support and tablet mode, I'll look into it.

i OWN Both acer a500 and nexus 7 tablet
As a nexuz 7 tablet owner i would strongly suggest you wait until someone other then asus /google makes a tablet. the asus nexus 7 is plegued with issues like screen not seated and loose to cracking with out reason. software issues . not to mention its strange symlink os because of lack of storage no sd card slot..
get something from a company with better products would be my suggestion.. google and asus together is a mess..
s
i still love my acer a500 its has some software flaws but with the bootloader from this forum and the roms its a awesome machine..
sent two nexus back with screen issues and still waiting to see if im going to get a refund or new device not a word from google or asus in two weeks they have had my device back for 30 days..
just my opinion im sure others have better experience .. good luck on your decision.. we will love you either way ..

^ Disregard this nonsense.
I've been using the Nexus 7 since July 23rd and it's flawless. Everyone I know who purchased one has found it flawless. SOME early ones had issues, but they're on their 4th production run now and the small issues a few people had have been addressed.
With the Nexus you are assured Android updates as soon as Google makes them. And a pure Android experience, too.
With Acer (yes, I have an A500, too), you're assured of slow updates, missing features, and bloat. You'll maybe get one major update, then you're on your own.

im thinking we will have to disagree about the issues being fixed. That is far from the truth.. people in large numbers are still reporting issues with then 90 build. The screen lift is not as bad from what i have been reading. Since ASUS is now leaving some of the bezel screws out on the left side of the device. The good side is now its easy to get one in your had as there is less demand on it. But getting a replacement can take a month or longer. There are several new post just this morning about screen lift issues Dead spots on the digitizer Yellow splotches appearing on the screen and so on..
I am so very happy that you got a perfect one. There are people who are 100 % happy and satisfied with there NEXUS 7 TABLET. The issues is not a first one production issue its a design flaw where they weakened the bezel on the left side to make room for the digitizer connector..
The biggest issue is that the google play store is not set up to sell hardware. This is where people are being charged 2-3 times for one device dealing with refunds . Its been the worse ever purchase of anything for me.
Yes im kinda impartial on this message because i have had two bad exchanges and a bad original device. NOW i have both sent back and still waiting to see if im going to get a REFUND. i told them I Do not want another pleagued device.. I will get a note 10.1 im thinking. Thou i wanted a 7 inch device..
This is just my opinion of the device From the reading i have been doing on many forums. Yours could be different and is equally respected ..
Thanks Erica Renee angry with google. But it will pass when they make it right..

Well, your anecdotal experiences are not indicative of the Nexus 7 buyer experience as a whole. Venturing out from the forums, you'll find most users are extremely satisfied with the tablet. Forums are generally filled with people looking for a place to gripe and a sympathetic ear.

Personally, after having my a501, im convinced that acer have somehow managed to go backwards from the bad old 90's days of horrible build quality and support for their laptops... Asus or Sammy for my next tablet easy.

i would agree that people who have issues seek out the forums to not really complain. but to consult and discuss there issues and experience with others. Just as some people seek out the forums to try and knock down people for there experience..
I think the nexus is a perfect size the development is stronger then it will likely be on other devices because its a nexus and from google direct so to speak. But perfect its not..
and yes i know the one here is a acer .. sorrry i did not mean to make this thread a nexus bash or not thread.. I think the acer looks nice and if it has micro usb port is a added benefit.. the big question of course with acer is the Boot- Loader.. will it be like the a500 or like the a200.
Does anyone have any information about rather the a 110 will be locked or not .?
Is it true the a110 has FM radio. For me this would be the deal breaker since I am looking for an incar solution

Despite all the flaws (i think there are many including the screen lift dead pixel unresponsive touch screen)is it worth buying ? Am getting it from usa thru my friend to india but what if i have a problem with the device ? Cant replace it ! I fear that alot Pls help me in deciding to get one or not !

I've read reviews that the device had issues with the screen lifting. I've had a couple tablets, nook color, nook tablet, kindle fire and I've tested out the new kindle fire HD. Out of all of them I LOVE the nexus 7 and none can touch the nexus 7 imo. I bought one last week and I haven't had any problems. Im sure other members will chime in about there opinions. I would buy it if i were you. I hope my comment helps

I love mine and I live in Europe. Bought in usa....
I don't think the newer models have as many issues, my c80 is great and to me this device just keeps getting better, the latest update is also working great on my end so I recommend it highly, its really a steal at the price too

I love my Nexus 7. It is amazing! It is totally worth it. The unresponsive touch screen is a software issue, which will probably be fixed. I just got a new update, and it seems to be working well so far. If it happens, you just turn the screen off and then back on. (Just sleep mode) I have had no hardware issues with mine, and I love it. It is totally worth it. Go Google!
Asus/Google Nexus 7
CPU: Nvidia Tegra 3 w/ 4 Cores + 1 Low Power Core @ 1.2 GHz
GPU: Nvidia GeForce w/ 12 Cores @ 416 MHz
RAM: 1 GB of DDR3 RAM
ROM: Nexus 7 4.1.1 JRO03D Stock ROM (Rooted)
Kernel: Stock
I've had mine almost a month now and I haven't seen any flaws. I've been beyond happy with mine. No screen lifting, no wonky display, nothing. Buy one.
The N7 I'm getting is a C80, chances of an issue?
Nexus 7 won the Gadget and Tablet of the year. Flaws you are mentioning are minor and you can always swap Nexus 7 with a new one if it's faulty. There is no other 7'' tablet out there which is as powerful as N7. You will love every bit of it....

My Nexus 7 doesn't have any issues. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I would just buy it and hope you get one without any issues.
hmm - maybe i would not buy it again...
Display calibration is very bad (washed out colors, bad gamma) -> http://www.displaymate.com/Tablet_7inch_ShootOut_1.htm
Even the cheaper Amazon Kindle Fire HD has a better display!
Android 4.1.2 unfortunately is still a little bit laggy compared to iOS 6 or Windows Phone 7.5.
Only stock-launcher runs pretty smooth - Apps (even chrome) are laggy and have input-lag...
Pixel density is not so good too - you can see pixels if your eyes are nearer than 40cm - that´s much better on iPad 3 (and probably iPad mini).
This make fonts look a little bit blurry ...
The speaker sounds a little bit tinny too (also better on ipad).
If the display would be better and android would run smoother (it´s a shame with that good cpu/gpu) it would be a very great gadget!
Overall the iPad 3 (and probably iPad mini) is much more perfect. If you are looking only for a cheap device you will maybe satisfied with the N7.
Keep in mind that this site is where people who have problems go to resolve them and/or rant about them, it's definitely not a random sampling. And threads stick around forever, so you can still read about old problems from right when the N7 first came out... the circuit-board has been rev'd, what, 2-3 times since then? And there are a couple of people who seem to have limitless time to stir up the hornet's nest and rally others to their cause (which is, apparently in one notable case, complete misery)... again, not representative of the vast numbers of people who have had zero problems with the N7. That's the thing about confirmation bias... very few people who are having no problems pop by to say "I am having no problems" (we're too busy using the thing to bother). And now we have threads where we are being told that people who have non-problematic N7's just 'think' they have no problems, but they are really just too stupid to notice them... yeah. So...
My wife bought a Nook, then I bought a Kindle. Then the N7 came out, and after playing with it for a couple of days I sent the Kindle back... a bit prematurely, because my wife then sent back her Nook and got a Kindle. All other things being equal, this probably could have been predicted - I need an Android tablet that I can hack to my heart's content, and she needs a vector for the easy procurement and consumption of ebooks, MP3s, and movies. But having tried all three of those devices, I found that none of them was particularly flawed compared to the others... they all had minor problems, most of which were resolved or worked around with a google search; we did have to send the first Nook back when every 8th row of pixels started flickering on and off, but the replacement was fine in that regard... it just didn't fit our usage needs as well as the others.
At this point, if I was still in the market for a tablet the only thing that would keep me from buying a Nexus 7 is the rumored larger-storage version or even the 10" version (though really I find that the 7" tablets have cut down on how much I use both my iphone and my laptop, so the 7" format seems perfect to me. 32GB of storage would be nice though.)

The N7 is like ace!
I've been reading the nvidia forums and I hear nothing but problems about this device, from updates breaking feature to weak Wi-Fi to cracked edges to chatting issues. It seems like a great device and a dream come true for my needs (stylus, gaming power, decent battery in normal use, console mode, quick update etc.) But the more I read those forums the more I doubt this device.
What is the consensus on XDA? Have you guys had any issues? How's Wi-Fi?
Sent from my GT-I9505G using XDA Free mobile app
Short answer - Yes.
Mine runs like a champ with no wifi issues at all. It has your typical brand new out of the box software compatability bugs that all new products have, but nothing that get in the way of it being a great product. Nothing even comes close as far as horsepower goes.
The only real problems I see is the cracking corner issues. I too have 1 very small hair line crack that I would have never noticed if others had not been talking about them. I toyed with the idea of an RMA and then figured why bother. Really, I can spend all that time and effort with RMA, get another one and have the same problem. The crack is unfortunate, but nothing that ruins the tablet. I love this little thing even with a tiny crack.
I am not really feeling it. The worst part is I picked mine up from my short trip to the US, and there's no recourse for me here. I have not experienced cracked edges (But surprisingly, the bezel on mine is rough from around the centre of the screen for around 2-3 cms). The Wi-Fi where I am living is not spectacular, and coupled with the sub-par Wi-Fi on the tablet, I haven't been able to download one game on the tablet yet. Besides, there has been screen flickering which has recently cropped up (When on manual brightness. Toggling from Auto to manual seems to have removed it), and I am seeing lag in the menus with the CPU profile on Optimized.
I want to love my tablet, really, (More so since I am stuck with it.), but, I am getting a few pangs of buyers remorse. Undoubtedly, the Shield tab is a powerhouse, but, sincerely hoping that Nvidia fixes the software side of things, the sooner the better.

The screen flickering is just Prism and we will probably be be able to turn it off with future updates. An as for the lag, id bet my left nut that you have installed some app or combo of apps that is conflicting and slowing down the tab. I have my tab set with 2 cores, 50% CPU power and limit 30 fps. I see zero lag (and great battery life). Even half-life and trine play perfect. I have noticed that the WiFi can get a bit weaker wen holding the tab in portrait but its never enough to cause an issue. Grid works perfect even on a crap century link router.
Anyways I am loving this tablet (although, this is my second, first had display driver issue and was returned to nvidia) my only complaint is that the accessories are nowhere to be found.
People not having wifi issues are apparently around strong wifi or used to poor wifi. Too many reports and acknowledgement by Nvidia not to be a global issue. The Best Buy units also have the weak wifi problem. 2.4 is poor and 5.0 is awful. Also signal bias depending on how the devices are held. "Classic" poor wifi antenna design.
Even the 32gb version is delayed from the early September release now. Coincidence perhaps, but fits the timing of the issue. Ditto on the cracks that show after a few days use.
Hopefully the issues get fixed, or sales will be impacted on an otherwise nice device. Best to return it and wait for proof of fixes if dislike the crack and wifi issues. Neither are going to be fixed with firmware.
I would bet that the Wi-Fi signal strength depends on which side of the device you hold on to.
Really ? I have zero issues great tablet ! Watch the reviews and go with your instincts. As for WiFi issues I opened mine last week connected to WiFi straight away there was a ota fixing a few issues with WiFi etc, Almost every new device has them as for the cracked corners? How do they treat the tablet, I dropped mine from quite a high distance and Did not even mark or dent scratch. The build itself feels solid, my only grumble is the bezzel has quite a sharp finish apart from that its amazing fast smooth great battery life great all round tablet. I would highly recommend! Don't listen to the horror storys.

If you're a gamer get it. If you're just gonna get it for media consumption probably not worth it as you can just buy a cheaper device for that or you may already have a media consumption device. I think majority buy this tablet for streaming games from pc or grid and play k1 enhanced games. For me I like playing the k1 enhanced games and grid and also onlive and with the shield controller it's no fuzz. No need for remapping. And also some games that have some control support will have available maps downloaded when you play the game so you don't have to remap.
Wifi on mine is not as strong as my other devices: note 3, note 2014. I got a replacement and it's slightly better but screen is more yellow so the wifi on my original might be faulty. I also noticed before I did an OTA on the replacement, the wifi was even stronger. Or at least it was showing 36mbps connection vs 11mbps after in the same spot. Weird but I hope this wifi thing can be a software issue too.
Right is the replacement

If not a gamer, the new Samsung 8" seems better. Much better display, better battery life and much better wifi reception. Like the Shield, they are both constrained for storage due to the 11gb free on the devices. IMO, this size especially with Android L that take 20% more space seems tiny.
Wi Fi not great with mine but not so bad that I regret getting mine..I can't put mine down

Wifi is relative to where you use it. If in a stronger area, even weak wifi reception is good.
Have no problem with WiFi great signal round the house and the bottom of my large garden.

If you're thinking about the Tab S 8.4 it has a better screen and battery life, but the performance is so so. UI lag and general lag in apps isn't so nice.
The Sheild has it's weak points but i can't think of any better tablet right now in this price range / size range.
I have the 16g version temporarily until my 32gb LTE version arrives. I can't understand why nvidia even made a 16gb model. With the kind of games you can play on this device, 16gb isn't nearly enough.
I have a 32gb Note 2014. Was wanting to replace with the Shield 32gb but will now wait to see if the wifi is fixed on that version. Comparing the Note, Air and Shield 16gb clearly showed how weak the Shield wifi is. Either that or the Note and Air have super mega watt powered wifi. My guess it is the former.
Was hoping 16gb would work, but even if wifi was fine, would have returned anyway since prefer the extra internal storage. LTE though is a waste for me since I have Verizon.

Come on guys, we are talking about an device available since beginning August in the Us and since two weeks in Europe.
There seem to be some batches who had problems. Nvidia answered really fast and supported people having Problems with cracking edges.
We had so many devices in the past having problems when been released. (And they were twice the price at an shield Tablet)
So lets get a look what we are getting for 300 bucks :
8 Inch FHD Display
k1 Prozessor.
Micro SD
Build in stylus ( Made out of metal, not some weird plastic thing)
Close to stock android
Good Haptic ( l know that is subjectiv )
The promise to receive Android L quiet fast
l think the package is one of the best in this price segment.

So, while i realize things are pretty quiet here, i figured i would give a friendly hello to the community. While shopping around yesterday, i ran across a 9 (black, 16GB) tucked away in a store (used of course). Despite knowing the reputation of the tablet, i figured what the heck; everything looks good on it (buttons are firm, no major bleed, screen is sharp), and its only $80.. why not. As it was, i was looking for something better (and more supported) than my Asus Z580CA (gotta love x86 chips in Android tablets.. ugh). I had been mulling over a K1 Shield, but the prices are just too high, and the Pixel C even more so.... so the price point here satisfies my larger tab desires.
Truth be told, after unlocking, and putting LOS (and FED) on, the tablet is actually really fast; and i will dare say noticeably so compared to my Asus (with double the memory and cores). No denying the Asus is lighter and thinner, but at the cost of usability and battery life (no room for a battery, really); i actually like the firmer bulk of this guy.
Anyway, i realize there may not be many out there to read this, but either way... one more reporting in for the ranks!
Welcome aboard ? I just picked mine up recently too. I owned one in the past when they came out and ditched it because of the seemingly unfixable performance issues, but now 3 years later I'm fairly happy with it.
It's running nice and smooth on Slim weekly 1.5

I'm still around too. I used it for 6-8 months when it came out then my son used it for about 2 years with only minor issues. Towards the end of his use we started seeing the fast battery drain issue. When I went to re-root it I found the USB port would work with ADB anymore. So after much diagnosis I decided to suck it up and spend $10 on a replacement daughter board from Ebay. Works like a charm now. Funny thing is I really wanted to root it to find the battery drain source but since swapping out the USB daughter board, rooting I haven't seen the issue anymore. It may have been a bad port all along. I did however install Flar's kernel which may also have helped?
TL/DR - Still a good tablet. My 2 cents.
I have a bunch of tablets, including a Shield K1. Just got the Nexus 9 a month ago or so. I've always wanted to own one because of its unique CPU. It is pretty fast indeed with one of the custom OSs here.
It certainly gets warm though if the CPU doesn't get its idle time. Pretty easy to get it to throttle back the clock speed due to heat there. Still, the Denver CPU was a speed demon in 2014. Pretty nice for web browsing! I'm going to guess that NVidia didn't use the Denver K1 in the Shield Tablet because of the power consumption of these big CPU cores. Not a good idea in a smaller gaming-oriented tablet. I feel it's similar to if Intel tried to put a Core M in a small tablet. Beefy CPU and GPU that aren't exactly super low power.
Picked up the nexus 9 and like some of the feel, etc pretty responsive as well. Not loving battery life however. Any recommended rom/kernel/settings for good battery life? Use it mostly for a few games but getting like 4 hours right now...
Well, being late in nexus 9 party, means you have saved some money. Nexus 9 runs much better with nougat.

Thanks for the recommendation, Are you using the 6.0 version of PureNexus or [ROM][N9 flounder][UNOFFICIAL][7.1.2_r24]★ Pure Nexus ★ Substratum ★[07/25/17]?
Thanks again!

I mainly use it for playing movies. I watch downloaded movies from a USB stick and I get several hours of screen on time. I usually do about 3-4 hours of driving for work, and watch movies along the way (I know, horrible idea safety-wise) and I usually have 35-40% battery life left.

Thanks for this thread. I'm late to the party too!!
I'm thinking about getting the Nexus 9. if i would have saw one for 80 bucks, I would have gotten it too with out thinking.
I'm also glad to see that many on here are still using this device and have some great input.
I was about to get one off of swappa, but looking around to find the best price. I actually need one by end of next week.
I use it for movies of cource, but taking notes and sometimes document work. So I will be also looking for the best keyboard too.
I might be getting one for about $200 CAD, used but looks to be in good condition. My other option is waiting and saving a bit for a Pixel C, but those are really hard to find and about $300 more. What sort of SOT do people get on LOS?
Mine should be delivered tomorrow will by up all night Rooting and Roming. I will compare my SOT with the iPad mini I'm getting rid of.
Yep, me too. Glad to see happy users, I have always wanted one and with the Pixel C prices being soooo much higher and the 'no root' options for the ASUS ZenPad 3S 10 I figured I'd grab a 'Like New' used model off Amazon for $200 with the 30 day option to return. But I love Nexus so much probably will just keep it no matter what (unless it has some of the 'issues').
Should arrive today
Welcome, and I am late to the party myself. Just picked up a 32gb Nexus 9 LTE refurb but I bought it to set up a hacking tablet or PWN PAD.
Just got it today and haven't rooted a device for a few years now, but it's like riding a bike haha. Brings back great memories of the first device I ever rooted which was my HTC EVO.
XDA Community is a great source of solid information.
Thanks!

I love this tablet, 32 GB with LTE, way better that the ipad Mini LTE i was using. Plus I dont have to worry about apps being deprecated for my system version.
I use it mainly for content sling TV, netflix, youtube and some of my own movies.
I rooted it and i'm using the lineage OS rom and it is great.
trying to catch up on my superhero movies, I watched CA winter solder and CA civil war. on one charge with plenty of battery left.
looking forward to doing more with this tablet
does anyone have a recommendation for a keyboard case to use. I used the ipad mini to take notes at meetings and would like to do this with a good keyboard
tfw nexus 10 pleb
Just jumped in.
I missed the days of the first Nexus 7
This tablet has potential even now 3 years after release: Cuda+Vulkan have already been enabled by our devs.
After setting stock rom i have already understood performance of stock roms
Next days I will start experiments
i was thinking of trying to get a shield tablet but it looks like you cant find them anywhere but after seeing prices of the N9 on swappa, seriously thinking about picking one up. My TN7 battery only lasts like an hour and turns into a nuclear furnace when I turn it on. just rooted my moms trustee old N7 which she has kept in mint condition. I am excited about the chance to pick one of these up for about $150 just to play around with them and check out the capabilities. You can't beat the bang for the buck from what I see.
Hello everyone, i am also thinking to buy one, just curious that Nexus 9 will get oreo Rom or not. I already searched the forum but no words about oreo.

There are a couple of experimental Oreo roms. The only problem is hardware acceleration for video doesn't work.
