[Q] Moody power button on Nexus 4 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
My Nexus 4 is 8 months old and recently for no reason, my power button started behaving weirdly. Sometimes gently pressing it wont turn off the screen and other times it turns off the screen and turns it on again and on some occasions it works perfectly. It is not a ROM issue because sometimes the phone, if shut down, wont even power up.
But as days are passing by the behavior is getting more and more weird. I do not really need the power button coz I use alternatives, but some day if I need to turn on the phone when it is shut down or force shut down the device when it does not respond, there is no way to do so. (EDIT: Pressing volume down button while connecting to AC supply or USB puts device in fastboot mode. Then it can be rebooted using "fastboot reboot" so I am not very worried now)
I checked other posts on XDA but they claim the button is becoming harder to press. My button is not harder to press; it gets pressed just fine and even gives that clicking feeling when you press it. Only the resulting behavior is weird. Has anyone else had this issue? What could be the problem?
(EDIT 2: The power button seems to work properly if I use my thumb nail to press it)

I purchased the phone from the US but don't live in the US so there's no chance of RMA.

Same thing happened on my phone, mainly after I get my back cover replaced. Now I have to use navigation shortcut to lock the screen and volume button to wake.

did u get done with the rma? is it covered under warranty? coz my power button is acting weird but i am worried if the service center guys would say it depends on wear and tear or someting like that..

I'm have exactly the same issue with my 6 month old nexus 4. I'm feeling a bit reluctant to send of my phone for repair, even though it is in warranty and I have not modded it in any way. The thing the issue seems to be getting worse over time. Has anyone sent there phone with this issue of for repair yet?

i took it to the lg service center yest and got it repaired in like half and hour .. havent had the problem since then .. hope it never appears again .. and just so u know, they did not replace the button, they used the same one..

The power button of my nexus 4 just became weird too today.
I could normally press it , but the screen won't lock. But if I press it for more than 2s , I got the power off menu.
Have no idea of what had happened...
Have anyone come with some solutions?

Kick them and ask them to replace it under warranty if they cannot then ask the issue a RMA so that u can get a new replacement phone under warranty.

I have the same problem as the OP here and I took it to the LG service center, they fixed it in just about 15 minutes. My phone is still under warranty so it's free, the button is working perfectly now.

Sent mine off for repair yesterday as there is no walk-in option in London We'll see what happens...

power button acting up for me as well. I ended up using the '' Reboot '' shortcut from Rom Toolbox, so no need really to use the button.

Got mine back on Friday, button now works as new. Although, the official repair description didn't really mention what was wrong only that two parts where replaced, no more detail.
dabby91: I recommend you go to the LG website and schedule a repair (lg.com/uk/support/repair-service/schedule-repair). I was without my phone for just over a week and they did a factory reset as well.

power button stopped working

So my power button stopped working... even after recovered and even in the recovery utility itself.. Im going to take it to sprint.. anyone know if this is gonna cost me the 100 dollar deductible?.. or will it just be replaced?.. the phone itself is still in perfect condition.
That's a hardware defect, and is covered under the one year warranty. They should fix it for free. If they try to deny you, talk to a manager and tell them it's covered under the warranty.

might be a problem if he's rooted, unless he can unroot, which at this point would be impossible since he won't be able to flash s-on if it's currently set at s-off, but that's just a guess, though he could still run a RUU causing to loose root access, but would not fix it from being s-off.
Good luck though.

I had this problem. start tapping it. eventually it will work. don't press too hard. Just keep pressing it.
Also, if you're going to unroot, make sure you give it a few seconds after you press it to see if it picked up the press. you don't want to accidentally press the wrong button.

Here's a temporary solution, as this is said to be a combination of a software and a hardware defect. Just press the power button to lock the screen and press it again to get to the unlock screen. The screen will recalibrate.
I had similar problem.
I sent my phone to HTC, and received it next day with a replaced hardware
But after couple of days I placed screen protector and it caused the problem again.(But this time power button had no effect). So i removed it, and since then, more than a week, i don't have any problem with touchscreen.
Read the FAQ, question 5.
I had the same issue. HTC warranty dept considers this a hardware deffect and they offer a service repair IF the phone is still within the warranty period. So I sent my phone to HTC, received it back 10 days later. So far no issue.

They do. Possibly to a lesser degree.
I have a related question: would replacing the digitizer by a brand new one (say, after "accidentally" dropping the phone and breaking the screen) fix this problem or not?

The FAQ says it's must be turned off and on?!?! shouldn't it be 'lock/unlock'?
also, brainstorming a permanent fix for this, maybe in the kernel:
What if after Xmin of the screen being on, the kernel flashed it off and on again?
i rather have my screen flashing .5 sec each 5min than loosing calls or pressing the wrong button at the most inconvenient time

[Q] Section of touch screen not working

Please see attachment, it is a screenshot similar to the problem I have.
A part of the screen is not touch-respondsive. It only happened recently, never had this problem before.
Possible to fix? I have trouble unlocking the 9 dots pattern everytime I turn on the phone because of this problem.
Please help, thanks.
Never mind, flashed a different kernal and its working now.
edit: Wait, no it's still there.
update: I wiped everything and installed factory 4.2.2 patch (occam-jdq39-factory-345dc199.tgz) but still cannot fix this problem. Please help!
update: Tried this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2027476 still not working :crying:
update: This also not working for me http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2163924... possible hardware issue?
verdict: I will live with this for now, after 1 day and still can't fix it then I will contact google hopefully for a replacement.
bump
I am having the exact same issue. That almost makes me think it could be a software issue but you said you already did a factory reset.
The weird thing is that it looks like the same part of the screen. Its a horizontal section in the very middle.
My best conclusions are that its the digitizer. It just started happening out of no where though. Very frustrating. Makes it impossible to hit the send button on the stock messaging app without minimizing the keyboard! I take excellent care of my Nexus 4. It has a case and it hasn't been dropped. It hardly has a scratch on it! Its a month old.

Strongertyer I can feel your frustration.
Here's mine (the one in my op was found from google). Mine is a bit lower, it blocks the top half of the qwer line on the keyboard and the yes/no buttons on prompt windows.
I can still type qwer just fine by pressing the bottom half of the keys, but for the the prompts I have to tilt and rotate the screen every time so the buttons aren't under the "dead zone".
Strongtyer are you also thinking of sending the phone back to Google?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Just talked to support and they seemed helpful. However, his first suggestion was to do a factory reset of course. He said if that didn't work then I could send my phone back for a replacement. Did a factory reset and still the same issue. Looks like I'll be calling again tomorrow.
I guess the plus side is that they send brand new phones and not just refurbished ones.
Any luck on your end?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I gave up fixing it already as you can see in my 2nd post and I believe it is not possible to fix it other than having the whole screen replaced, so I asked directly for a replacement under warranty. Then after a brief moment google emailed me a set of instructions for packing the phone.
So on Sunday evening I booked the courier, printed the documents, picked everything back in the box, warped and taped it. And today the courier came and collected my phone.
Now I have to use my good old HTC Legend again. However it uses regular SIM card, so I had a bit of fun making myself an adapter to up size the Nexus 4's micro-sim!
I talked to Google today and they are sending me a replacement. They told me I can keep the phone till the new one arrives. I just have to return it within 21 days.
Just crossing my fingers that they don't say the damage is my fault. I don't know how o could have caused it. I haven't does it and I take really good care of it.

You should contact google anyway if you want a warranty replacement. Go to the link below, click contact google, answer a few check box questions and there should be a phone number.
https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/2411741?hl=en&ref_topic=2803008
Because I believe that the only way to fix this is to have the screen replaced.
Have the same problem here. I have the phone for 1 month now.
I live in the Netherlands and the nexus 4 did not get official release here. Should I still contact Google?
Could it be this problem only happens with the newer phone's? I have the one with the little feet on the back. Version 605 I thought. What version do you guys have?
Also should I unroot and lock the boot loader when I send it in for repair ?even though the problem has nothing to do with it.
Sorry for the poor English...

Welcome to xda-developers. Your English is fine.
You should contact Google.
Interesting that you mention the newer version of the phone -- I'd be interested in knowing if this is in fact a result of a newer manufacturing process, different materials, or maybe the place of manufacture (Korea or China). The place of manufacture can be identified by the letter in the fourth position of the serial number found on the box.
can someone update us on this issue? I have the same problem and i am so sad! I saved up 8 months to get this phone!

well, its certainly a hardware issue.
Digitizer, for what I know.
But no easy solution.
Would have happened due to the faulty charger.
But google is not helping!
I have the same exact issue. Playing PVZ2 is now extra difficult because of this issue.
Is there any other fix other than an RMA (currently not in the US)? :crying:

I have this same screen issue. Mine is is first row from top which makes it very frustrating. I am on 4.4.2 and still have this issue.
Can you describe what you've tried in more detail?
I have the same problem but mine is like 2 inches from the bottom of the screen. I can use the softkeys in portrait but they are unusable in landscape. I have had the phone since Nov 12 so sadly my phone is now out of warranty. LG's approved repair centre want £95 for a new screen. I am thinking maybe buy a Nexus 5 and trade this in for £70. I could sell it for like £130 but I would feel bad selling a phone I know the screen is on its last legs.

Galaxy s4 reboot issue (battery already changed)

Got a galaxy s4. It reboots and sometimes can't turn it on for ages. Then sometimes you can turn it on straightaway.
I had golden eye running it did loads at work last night. tried a few other roms all the same
Seems a bit strange...any ideas anyone?

i would say with yours mate thats just the update being a pain? rather than a real serious issue, theres a thread on xda relating to this update just search for that thread bud
Its strange so far with this s4
ive replaced the battery with a battery from ebay, looks like an official samsung one..no difference
reverted to stock..no change still reboots.
tried a few custom roms, reboots occurs. tried google edition, still the same
lowered processor speed, for some reason when i go to rom toolbox the phones whacking out at 1820 mhz..i dont know if thats normal?
another strange issue. When the phone switches on it takes a fair while for the mobile network to connect, ive owned a fair few phones but this one really does take a long time,
anyone have any idea at all, before i got to send it back to samsung and wait for 5 years to get it back
If it shuts down and you can't reboot anymore, then it's a hardware issue.

Shutting off on it's own?

Got the phone yesterday, the only thing I've done is unlock the bootloader and download all my apps. It worked perfectly fine last night, went to bed all things were great.
I woke up this morning and it was turned off which was strange, held down the power button to boot up and it gets to the home screen and immediately says "shutting down" the battery isn't dead so i'm not sure what the issue is.
I've tried turning it on with the charger plugged in and it does the same thing.

Going to try flashing the stock image, it'll stay booted in the bootloader so I'm thinking it can't be the battery.

My Nexus 5 had/has that same issue. The ceramic power button started to fail. I would have to push really hard on the power button in order to get it to stop. I hope to god this is not an issue with my 6p that is coming in the mail today.
I would send it back if its a power button issue.

My nexus 5 had that issue as well but it would just constantly reboot. This just turns off mid boot and then I have to hold the power button to turn it back on. But if I boot into the bootloader it'll sit there and be just fine.

Yeah, this doesn't sound like a power button failure, more like a software issue...I would attempt a factory reset or clean flash of the MM image from Google and try again...if it happens again I would RMA it..

Well I just tried flashing the MDB08K factory image and it still wouldn't fully boot up, but yet sitting here without the charger plugged in, it'll sit in the bootloader without any issues.
Downloading the MDA89D factory image and going to flash that, then relock the bootloader and basically set it back to the way it was when I got it. If it still won't boot then i'll contact google and get it resolved.

Yeah it's a bit of a bummer because I have no idea what's wrong with it.
Only thing I can think of at this point is the battery in some weird way is shot but even that doesn't make a lot of sense.
Decided to just call Google and tell them I want an exchange and not a normal "return it, wait for money to be refunded, and then rebuy."

I made it very clear that I didn't want a refurbished device and expected a brand new device and he said I would be getting a brand new one. I also told him if i got a refurb that i'd just send it back as a return and buy a new phone.
But it's an advanced replacement, said I was one of the first people calling in that needed a replacement device so that's good news I guess.

So I'm having the same problem, I wonder if it's because I'm on the old firmware.

I was on the newest firmware when the issue first came up.

Did you unlock the bootloader ? Root or install a recovery ? Just wondering if that is the cause or a hardware issue that has nothing to do with unlocking the bootloader ?

Only thing I had done was unlock the bootloader, but I even relocked the bootloader and had the same issue.
