Beam issues - Nexus 7 (2013) General

Starting to notice alot of problems with my Nexus 7 and I guess that's good considering the 14-day return period is approaching. This one involves beaming. With my Galaxy S III and the Nexus 7, beams all result in error messages and I can't quite figure out where to hold them to beam successfully. I tried holding my phone up to the upper part of the tablet, near the camera. That is the only place I can get a beam notification, but it still results in errors. At this point I'm going to go ahead and assume I have a lemon and take it back. Anyone else have beaming issues? or have done a successful beam?

um not to tell you not to use the android beam, but it is bluetooth and slow. I have been sending files back and forth to my n4 with super beam, uses wifi direct and its works
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.majedev.superbeam&hl=en
side note is android beam checked on in your s3? I can imagine that samsung has some other app and doesn't rely on android beam as its first choice

The NFC is on the N of "Nexus". Once NFC takes place, it uses Bluetooth to send files and you should have a 10 meter range (30ft).
I'll try with my Galaxy Nexus. Never beamed a file this way.
Update:
I used CM file manager to beam a 1mb photo from my N7 to GN. Worked well. I then used Gallery to shoot a picture from my GN to my N7, which also worked.

Thanks, i'll check that out. Yeah it's checked. They both prompt me to initialize the beam, but then the Nexus always tell me to touch devices again, then ultimately fails.

That's interesting. I didn't try to send a file over from my phone. I was trying to send a file from the Nexus to the S III. It was a screenshot.

[Q] Can't come back after idle

Problem: If I leave my Q idle overnight (I only use it mornings) I have to reboot it in order to play music on it.
Details: I'm controlling it with a Nexus 7. The N7 will see the reboot happen "Lost connection with Nexus Q" so I don't think it's a connectivity issue. I did notice that for whatever reason you have to be on the same wireless frequency as the Q to control it. My N4 and N10 are on 5Ghz and they can't talk to it at all. I'm using a Netgear R6300. The N7 reports "Unable to play requested stream." when I try to use the Q.
I called Google about it and no one at the support center even knew what it was. "I know you said it's a Nexus Q, but what *is* it? What does it look like? ... Everyone is huddled around my desk trying to figure out what this thing is! ... Have you tried calling the manufacturer?"
Look two threads below you. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2185112
Its being looked at by Google. We can only hope it gets fixed.

I'd read that thread and it didn't seem like the same thing to me. As long as I keep my Q playing it keeps working.

You tried factory data reset? I used to have that problem. Now that I think about it after re imaging after trying cm10 I haven't had it happen.
I've tried both the "GUI" version (telling the N7 to factory reset it) and the manual hold the button down version and neither has fixed it.

[Q] I lost my Nexus - what now?

HI all, I lost my Nexus 7 today.
I was gutted - searched high & low in the local supermarket and couldn't find it.
Luckily a decent chap had found that his nephew was sat in the car playing with it (having found it) and I got it back. (cheers chappy!) :good:
I am still in shock about this, its my 3rd arm, my memory, my precious!
However - what in case this happens again?
I have Prey on it, but I have found that there is some delay when the alarm goes off and it being locked - long enough for me to find and stop prey.
I have lookout security on it.
So I can get a location and a photo, lock it (assuming the person with it is not techy and turns both off first.)
Can you recommend any other apps etc?
I think a big sticker inside my cover with my details might also be in order.
What would you suggest?
Google's own Android Device Manager https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager
DON'T SET IT DOWN ANY WHERE AND FORGET ABOUT IT!!!
Hahaha. Sorry, I really don't have any suggestions (other than what I just said). I've never lost a device before an just don't see how anyone does! Especially in your situation, since you said how much it means to you!

Order an iron cage and then hook that cage to yourself and make sure when you are not using it, it must be kept inside.
You will never lose it!
Great words from Alfred lord Tennyson: Tis better to have lived and lost than to never have lived at all.
On s serious not, I think cerebus is good. If you're rooted it can be a system app and even survive a factory reset. Not a factory flash though. Most people won't know how to though.

I'd like to +1 Cerberus too.
I use it too, but you'd need to have / hope your tablet will hook onto a wifi network if you want recovery options. Otherwise, you'll have to hope Android's security options will protect your data if you consider it sensitive.
P.S. Worth every penny I paid for my life-time account. I have no affiliation to them other than being a customer.

My wife is now insisting I get myself a man bag.
Something to put my Nexus, wallet, glasses, key, lippy in.
Hmm, one of those things is wrong - lol.
Yes I have installed Cerberus to have a look at only it tells me I'm not rooted.
Funny - I was a while ago - I must have put something on to tell it that its not to try and run the sky app then removed it with the sky ap (because I cant find it now).

EDIT:AH! maybe the update to 4.3 unrooted it?
What would worry me most is
My home was ripped off and all they took were iPads. I at the time did not use any code to create security so I knew my iPad was gone forever. The thing that bothers me the most about your story is how some kid found your device and didn't tell anyone, just taking it out to his car and playing with it, intending to keep it of course,.
Two things about these 7" tablets. They are easy to carry along and easy to misplace so it behooves one to always have a place for it and always use security so it can't just be used without at least making an effort.
Yes that is a worry - I might have to start using a pattern lock or something.
Cerberus looks cool - but not all the features work - I think 'll neet to root it again for that.
Its cheap too - might go for it.
Oh and the android device manager is OK too.
Not sure if I should start another thread on this - but now that I have upgraded to 4.3 and its no longer rooted, will running wugfresh and re rooting it remove any apps or data on it?

If the tablet is still unlocked (i.e., unlocked padlock symbol under "Google" logo while it boots up) then all you should need to do is flash the SuperSu zip file that can be found in many places on this forum to root, and a factory reset shouldn't be necessary, but always make a Nandroid backup just in case.
If you need to unlock the bootloader (necessary to root), last I checked a factory wipe is required.
Cheers, its backing up right now.
BBC1 has just featured Cerberus and shown how good it is.

Nice to know there are still since honest people left..
Lookout is good to but I
Installed avg pro and if you lose it not only can you track it down but you can even wipe it remotely if you can't get it back. Also.. Had the picture thing but the best thing is one payment.
No yearly or monthly.. That was why I got it and not lookout.

I have purchased cerberus, it was cheap enough and does the job.
After several backups using the nexus toolkit etc I have used cerberus to see if it can wipe it.
It did.
Not sure whether to smile or frown lol.
Now I'm restoring, however I notice that my folders are not restored, just the apps so I have to sort everything again.
But it did the job, I wont use a pattern lock so if its lost the finder can either try to contact me or use it online - and thats needed to be able to take pics and locate it etc.
I think I'll look into the adding of cerberus to the rom also, also going to add the wifes phone & tablet to my account.
Oh hang on - restore has just finished.
Hmm - not happy - fast notepad does not have its notes
good job I did my own backup lol put em back now.
I use Cerberus, more powerful than Google device manager.

+1 on Cerberus, and you don't need root for most of it's features.
Are Cerberus photos working for you guys? For me they come out as vertical streaks, regardless of the photo format selected. This seems to be a common problem, as far as I can tell.
Photos are working fine for me however I would note a few issues.
It does not always communicate well, wiping required root.
If the wifi is off then I need to wait until someone turns it on, so I cannot use a pattern lock on it.
If I send a siren message then they can instantly cancel it.
Mine is in a Lente Designs case with a magnetic cover so it auto locks it when closed.
However, the siren just goes "Brpp" with the cover closed, open the cover and it goes off, close the cover and it stops.
And the lock - if II enter the correct code the next time it sleeps I then need to enter the lock again.
So you need to send an unlock command to it to stop this.
All the same I bought it and installed it on my tablet, wifes tablet & phone.
I suppose at the very least I can find her when out shopping lol
+1 for Cerbus. I have it on 3 devices.

[Q] Screen mirroring Note 3 and Netgear PVT3000 PVT-3000

I have largely very few issues while using the Netgear PVT3000 with my Windows 8 laptop but have severe lag/pauses/drop outs with the Note 3. I also tried the Note 3 yesterday with a 2013 Samsung TV and things were better but still very laggy and with drop outs. In both cases things get better after a few minutes of the connection but eventually collapse. The common factor here is the note 3 and perhaps using miracast as opposed to Intel Widi protocol. All of this has been done within very close range and full bars being reported so signal strength isn't the issue. As there are no options to play with it kind of works or doesn't work - in this case it doesn't.
Wondered if anyone else has had more luck or has some suggestion because this is stopping me from becoming much less reliant on my laptop.

which firmware are you using?
Since you guys at least seem to have it working maybe you could help me...
I can't get screen mirroring to work.
The PVT acts like it is going to connect but then it freezes on "Connecting to the wireless display device..." even though my phone says the connection is good.
It shipped to me with 2.4.26 already on it and I am having a hard time getting any other firmware to load. It seems to always fail.
Netgear support is being pretty useless on it since Note 3 isn't officially supported but it did the same thing with my GF's Note II.

There isn't much that should stop some kind of connection being established one the dongle has had a minute to boot - the obvious one is to disable the power saving option on the note 3.
I'm very disappointed and surprised more people aren't doing widi mirroring and reporting issues with it.

I agree. Would really like to know what firmware is working for anyone with Note 3. I thought there may be a custom version floating around. Which version are you guys on?
My latest update from Netgear is they want to do a hardware RMA. I'm not entirely convinced that it is hardware but there's no other posts about this that I can find.
I tried every firmware on their site and got the same result with Note 2 and 3.

RMA will be pointless, I've got two pvt3000s - both with the same issue with the galaxy note 3.
Got onto Netgear who advised me to try different firmwares and I went for v2.4.3 and found that it eliminated all of the drop out and most of the timing issues (except for youtube which lags 2-3 seconds behind what is happening on the phone but as the sound and video are sync'd, it's not really a problem).

I was on a mostly stock rooted rom. Now I even went back to unrooted stock rom. Obviously my Knox is tripped but everything else is bone stock. It still won't connect. Going to scour xda today too see if there's some patch for mirrorcast for if you have ever rooted

Anyone having issues with NFC?

Tried pairing the v20 to my UE Boom using NFC and it wouldn't work, so I thought maybe it's the speakers. I tried with a different phone and it worked just fine. Tested again by trying to share via NFC on the V20 and it still won't work. Any thoughts?

now that you mention it, yeah. When I was setting up the phone I used LG's transfer app, which works with NFC and Wi-Fi to transfer old settings and apps to the new device. It never worked. It's possible the NFC didn't work. I'll have to test it on something else known working.

Yeah. Tried to transfer an app from my G3 and couldn't do it.
I was able to do it from my V10. But I think the nfc antenna is close to the top of the phone in the camera bump, and not the middle like most. Try holding the camera bump to your speaker or middle of the back of your phones and see if it works. I just tested with my galaxy prime and sure enough, back to back doesn't work, but if I slide the V10 down to where the camera bump is in the center of the back of my other phone, it works.

Make sure you're pointing the very top of the camera. It's also weak because of the metal back. The signal only comes out the tiny horizontal slit about the camera

NFC issues using Android Pay

Does anyone have issues using Android Pay? I unlock my phone and wave the phone over the reader (like I did with my iPhone) and nothing happens! I leave it there for a good few seconds sometimes and it doesnt work.
If I switch off and one and try it'll sometimes work but then next time the same problem happens.
Are there any app's to try the reader strength and to show it's detecting a contactless reader or nfc transponder?
Regards Steve

Remove any cover, and try putting the phone's screen on the terminal. Some phone's have that.
Just tried it again today after removing and adding android pay again and with and without a case. Support have said that the sweet spot is just behind the top of the camera. Keeps asking me to try again only to show the same message again. NFC Bluetooth pairing is flakey with a lot of precise movements needed to get it to work

Indeed NFC on N6 is very picky - it just requires some practice to get it right. First - phone must be unlocked, second - touch at center of terminal with camera and hold it steady for about 1-2 sec.
I've ended up changing the phone and the new one works better. Ended up with the new Wileyfox Swift 2X

Update on Android Pay issues
After about a month of using this, I can confirm that this works well in most restaurants and supermarkets. I still have occasional issues using this on the Tube and the Bus, but I am hoping once TFL do their system upgrade this too may go away.
NFC and contactless problem
Anyone having contactless payment or NFC problems I realized today where NFC is on Nokia 6 it's based in middle of camera and light as for rest of phones are based else where on back these are in middle of camera and light hopefully this helps
..
Mine works perfectly using Barclays as my payment app.
