OK guys I am about to embark on the Nexus 7 adventure and go purchase one. After looking through the dev and original dev sections , much to my surprise, the threads are already littered with too many ROMs for me to consider (which is a great sign!).
Therefore, what ROMs or ROM do you like best, and why ? I am all for stability and performance, however I also love all the extra mods you can perform (analogous to AOKP). There's nothing better than decking out your tablet from a ROM that is highly customizable, that goes above and beyond standard AOSP.

I am waiting on a more stable ROM base and also enjoy stock for a while before I embark on the flashing journey. When I do flash something new I'll try and remember to update you on how it went and what I like/dislike.
Asking people what their favorite ROM like asking what their favorite food is: you will get varieties of answers (possibly a combination of all available options) and it would be meaningless to you. You just have to try them all.

Lol I know. I am not asking for the "best" one, as "best" is irrevelant, since it will vary per user. I was simply asking for people's personal opinions.

Ever since windows NT I have been a big fan of the tiny approach, take stock, and delete every single little thing that you know you will not use. There is also at least one big update in the pipe coming from google and staying close to stock is going to help a bit in the near future. As far as what do I like, I myself am an AOKP fan where custom roms are concerned. I do not use pie or per app colors(from PA) or a lot of the stuff that comes with CM. What I do enjoy is smooth perfection, root, and a trimmed down os. It is always nice to start with stock (odexed) and try all of the awesome flashable tools out there, luckily there are devs in the App section that are doing some really great work right now. I then usually trim off a lot of the gapps processes, things running in the background, and use SD maid to trim out the rest of the clutter. I delete every single little system app that I do not use ( live wallpapers, hangouts, mail, exchange, nfc) .
One big thing to look at in the roms are the modifications that the dev has done while compiling though. There are many toolkits that have been made that can make substantial improvements to the speed of the rom itself (ie linaro / O3) keep an eye out for that stuff.
I'm also a minimalist but not the extent above. I've always loved CM since cm7. Running an unofficial build of that now. I use a few of the features of cm and ignore the rest. Usually delete all unused stuff.
I'm on cleanrom , it's pretty much stock with a couple of options added.

check the rom threads in the dev section, the download counts of roms and how active each thread is and you will know the favorite. I am still on stock rom, unrooted.

in this thread i want to read your views and suggestions about the best rom wich is for our beloved atrix.
waiting...?
I've just been using the stock AT&T Gingerbread Rom with LauncherPro installed. It makes navigating the homescreens and app drawer a much better (and smoother) experience. I'd like to try CM7 sometime but won't bother until its out of beta and Webtop is supported.
To answer your question, I've heard both Alien and Aura are good, but I haven't tried them personally.
It's better that using roms originated from stock if you are not friendly with custom roms.
CM7 is light & fast but it makes problem sometimes.

Best Gingerbread ROMs: Darkside and Aura (not updated as much as Darkside)
Don't use Alien anymore.
RedPill is my favorite ROM though. If you don't need webtop then use RedPill. It's much better than CM7. Smoother, ICS transitions, certain tweaks that just make it plain better.

Not sure why you'd tell people not to use Alien...its one of the best ROMS available for our device. Is it older than a lot of the newer roms? Yes. But I've tried every rom available for this device, and keep going back to Alien. Why? Cause its still fast, does exactly what I need it to do, and the most important factor? Its STABLE. It just plain works. Until ICS or MIUI are ported over this will remain one or the best roms out there.

Not to hijack this thread, but I am also looking for a better-than-stock ROM that still supports webtop and the other docking modes...The OP didn't say whether or not he wanted/needed that.
I've been looking through the descriptions of the various ROMs, and nothing has grabbed my attenion, except maybe CherryPi.
i am using an international Atrix and tried all of them (except ninja) and i have to say that my favourite is Homebase with honeyatrix theme. Its the fastest rom on my phone propably faster than cm7 and supports both fingerprint scanner and webtop.
it was a simle question just to see your opinions and to find out wich is the most popular rom for the atrix
Some one opened a thread like this before and it was closed down by Ken saying XDA doesn't allow "what's best" threads I would check the rules carefully and if you want to compare ROM just read the OP of each ROM and do the comparing yourself. Im Not trying to be rude or mean just trying to look out for our community. And im sure the way I put it was alot nicer than some of the people on here would of(The stuff I read on this forum wow...)

As for the OPs original question... the 'best' ROM is whatever you like the most... everyone has their own favorites. No single ROM can be labelled as the 'best'. They all have their own pros and cons, your best bet is to just unlock your bootloader, root, and experiment for yourself.

unless you disagree prove me wrong. changelogs are posted for a reason. CM7 is a completely different rom, so are ASOP roms, but ALIEN, AURA, DARKSIDE, are all form the motoblur series, with the difference in DARKSIDE, starting directly off of AURA's shoulders.

haha thanks, I just wanted to remove FUD that's thrown around in the forums here. It seems our general audience here requires the color red on a theme to start calling the entire rom fantastic and pushing other roms below.
I am not here for the pissing match.
ALL Android Roms are based on AOSP.
AOSP is the source that all Android Roms are built from.
CM7 is based on AOSP.
CM7 = AOSP + CM7 parts and tweaks minus the manufacturer and carrier bloat.
Motorolas 4.591 blur roms are also based on AOSP
Alien\Darkside\etc = alot of work
All of the Blur Roms are built on Moto ATT 4.5.91 with blur.
These dev's have tweaked 4.5.91 removing blur and adding aosp apk's and framework hacks to deblur the blur roms. also alot of other tweaks.
All of the BLUR/AOSP/CM7 Rom devs in the Atrix Dev Threads deserve a lot of big thanks on their threads. They have listened to all of the requests and demands and built just want you wanted. I do not know how many hours I have spent in logcat
Please read each of the Rom features and Donate to the Atrix Rom Dev's that provided "the rom you like the most" ..... please buy them a few beers.

try not to take things so literaly. You'll get further in life. AOSP as in pure.
OFC ALL ROMS ARE BASED ON AOSP. however blurred/sensed/wized roms are the vanilla rom with malware, garbage running on top. Bull**** that you can live out and honestly your phone performance just suffers from the "extra's".
However other than some minor tweaks in AURA/ALIEN they are AOSP + BLUR + MODS.
Oh and DARKSIDE is AKA AURA + RED THEME, plus anything else he can scrape from the forums. As I read in other threads, he's not a developer but a "blender". Dev's are one that bring innovation to the scene and not simply copying and pasting mods all into one clay ball.

+1000 Very good ROM,you must try it
I don't know guys - they all look, feel and work the same to me - honestly I can't wait for some REAL custom roms not based on TouchWiz (which is super annoying) .. If you used MIUI you will know what I mean.
Do you think it will ever happen, or are we tied to S-Pen software embedded into stock rom?
Another vote for Rocket ROM. Keep in mind that there is a file to revert to the stock theme somewhere in the thread.
These threads aren't allowed but before it's closed... I use Cassies Rom
they are all good... Though we might differ on our experiences with the current available ROMs + considering the fact that though we have same Phone model and brand, but the fact is each of us has unique Galaxy Note on our hands (Example is some NOTE can tolerate extreme undervolting and some cant)... We have about 5 active ROM thread, you can visit each of the thread, read the users feedback and you can also post your queries there... or you can try each of the ROM, have each of them stay at least 3-5days on your phone, then you can decide whats best for you (like what i did)... GoodLuck...
Hi there,
I know this is an old thread, but since it was the first one I found when I was searching for good Roms, I figured I'd post my experience here. I've been using RocketRoms for a while now and find them clean and they work well. I've also been playing around with Franco's kernels, and so far I've never seen such great battery life as I have today with RocketRom v22 and Franco kernel 7. Once ICS roms become more stable I'll switch over, but I'm so pleased with performance now that I'm reluctant to switch over too early.
See my signature
Very smooth, no lag, great battery life.
stock LA1 + Franco/Abyssnote kernel here. Usability of Kernel depends on your note
As far as GB roms go I had great success with Darkyrom.
I've recently gone over to Midnote ICS - and so far it's the best of the current crop of ICS roms.
If you really need your phone to work every day without fault, go with darkyrom.
If you want the newest bells and whistles, go with midnote.
I've tried most of the GB ROMs, and personally, there is only this 'refined' one which i always go back to... DarkyROM
Run it with Franco kernel, you got a bloody satisfying setup

These sort of threads always take a wrong turn and turn into flame war. There is no best rom for one user. Read the information available and make your own decision.
Looking to get a N7 soon when the price drops start. Was wondering what do you guys think the best ROMs out so far are. Looking for silky smooth usage for the most part. Mainly will be used for web surfing, so whatever can make web pages load faster would be nice!
Will be using a different kernel that will allow better battery life as well.
So opinions on best ROMs? Would be nice if you've tried many recent ROM's to provide feedback on
If its mainly for surfing then stay on stock, install aosp browser as chrome is slow and switch to franco kernel.
A rom will not make amything faster only a kernel can. You can turn off animations to speed it up but even stock rom can do that.

I still want a different ROM. Such as Glazed Jelly bean, Paranoid or whatever they were. They were visually a lot more pleasing, and the ROMs themselves I believe were leaner as well?
Just wanted to see what everyone was using as their main ROM atm.
I really can't say there is a best ROM or even best kernel.. When I was new to Android a few years back I was a flashaholic.. OMG NEW ROM!!! AND IT HAS A COOL TITLE AND SLOGAN! MUST [email protected]!#@!! Now a days... I pick a ROM, I pick a kernel that looks like it's frequently updated, well maintained and has an engaging developer and stick with it. There really is no best.. Just the one that suites your needs.. Speed.. Eh.. Unless you're a benchmark or FPS junkie almost any ROM on the N7 is going to fly.. This tablet is a beast..
Just read the threads in development.. Look to see what's up to 4.1.2 standards, see what is frequently updated, see what users feedback is, see how the dev responds to feedback, look at the features... Pick three and try them out.. I guarantee one will trap you and that's the one for you.. It'll just hit you.. A ROM that is the `best' for me may not necessarily be the best ROM for you.

This is great advice! I've lost count of how many ROMs have been on my n7 now. I settle on one for a week or so, then get itchy feet and try another ;p Grass is always greener and all that!
I recommend stock rom ,stablet
I am using paranoid android. The screen looks much bigger in tablet mode + the option of expanded desktop. Combined with franco kernel its a winner. I use my device for gaming and now franco has gpu freq change on the fly so it suits me well.

Guys, isnt there a similar thread already - > Which ROM are you running?
Thread Closed
There is no "best" ROM for a individual user. Different ROMs offer pro and cons, so it best for users to read the Development threads and make the own informed decision based on there needs. People often get a little over passionate about there preferred ROM, so these type of threads are best closed before the flames begin. The only exception to this is poll threads to determine the number of users using different ROMs.
I just got my phone couple of days ago, and today had the time to root it. Which is the most popular ROM for this device ?Is it worth to flash a custom ROM ?I mean for someone who needs a stable build ?Can you recommend something ?

CyanogenMod is always going to be the most stable custom ROM as long as you use the stable releases, simply because it's the most actively attended to and tested one. MIUI, Paranoid Android and Slim Bean come next and have their own perks, but they're just not on the same level.

not really,
other roms base on the most stable rom in existance, google android, aosp. cm must take this base and make it possible for old, incompatible devices to get their share. thats only possible by extending the living heck out of it. some of it is overlaid, some is not. errors come in naturally, that just happens when you leave the safe path of aosp, hundreds of commits going through gerrit stemming from all kinds of sources. dont get me wrong, cm is an amazing project. but it cant provide the same stability that aosp based roms provide, the same speed and level of customization.
as a developer i can tell you that the software i get from google is flawless, they support me with functioning drivers and blobs, documentation and guidelines. i can literally forget about everything else and go wild, extend and create new stuff that wasnt there before. i will never run into the myriads of problems the cm team is uncovering in their crusade of introducing android to legacy devices - and that in my opinion is their true power.
pps- i see you included MIUI as well. think again. guess which is the worlds biggest rom with millions and millions of users. miui. guess whos the only rom that has on ounce of design credibility. miui. they have done things in their freetime that rival professional products and you can be sure a matias duarte will not go to xda when he's out of ideas, he's taking note when miui drops a release instead. i think you are greatly underestimating them.

dont get me wrong, cm is an amazing project. but the reason it traditionally takes a backseat on nexus plattforms is that it cant provide the same stability that aosp based roms provide. it cant provide the same speed and it cant provide the same level of customization. on all other plattforms cm is the unrivaled king, that is true.

paranoid android, just put all the apps back in phone mode and its basically a stock rom with added speed and a few more customizations. plus i like the kernel colors and the custom app colors, very well done
xylon is also great but not personally my favorite, has many customizations and is much like aokp with its own feel
Codefire-X is also one of the most stable and speedy roms out, it and PA are probably my favorite roms right now, and i feel bad its often overlooked, its like aokp with a more stockish feel but faster and stabler at this point
theres also Carbon rom which is made by a few the awesome liquid rom developers, havent tried yet but looks good
Saber Mod looks cool too with its linaro optimizations but as with carbon i havent had time to try it out
there are also some interesting roms like PAC and Rootbox, but those dont really sound like they would appeal to you as much
also keep in mind i mostly prefer the roms in original android development because of the general cleaner feel, but many of the roms in normal android development are also good if you want a bit of a different feel or special tweaks
but whatever you choose, just dont stay on stock you wont regret going with any of these roms over stock
I'm using MMuzzy rom now for some days and is realy good. Is aosp with some optional features i miss in stock rom. I combine it with Trinity four kernel and for now no problems with that combination.
Never like CM or aokp...to much features and never work without problems.

rasbean jelly, fast and stable.
Hi all,
I have had my one for a while now and have been lurking around the forums for the most part. I have done S-OFF, Rooting, Recovery and many other tweaks. Now that 4.2.2 is hitting the rom scene for us I am wanting to dive into a rom but I am feeling a bit overwhelmed at the options.
Obviously the ROMS fall into 2 categories of sense and vanilla and there is obvious advantages to both sides. I want to try a more factory build so I have been considering flashing the recent dump of the GE One but there are some things like Pie control and custom DPI settings that I very much want to use and would like it if they were baked in rather than needed me to side load.
I am hoping that you all can give me some advice on some good 4.2 Vanilla roms to try out. Maybe Kang, Paranoid, CM... and I know there is a lot of other well known ROM makers around here with ROMS I do not recognize the names of (Carbon, Viper, Revolt). So if you have any recommendations I would love to hear them.
I am on the verge of the GE rom but going to wait for stock 4.2.2 then decide after if that helps

Yeah I wouldnt mind waiting but I dont mind flashing back and have been looking forward to trying out stock or AOSP on the one for a while just not sure where the various AOSP roms stand right now as far as ease of use, bugs, and general smoothness.
Just try out a few and see which ones you like

This.
Once you've got the hang of flashing ROMs and using titanium backup to move your apps across them, you'll have no problem changing between ROMs regularly. Once you find something that works for you, stick with it for a while then see if anything else grabs your attention.

I am currently using ViperOne ROM, and love it. Its very smooth and offers a huge amount of customization options.
Aside from the above, I also can highly recommend Android Revolution HD, and TrickDroid. Both are very smooth, stable, and have large followings with great dev support right here on XDA. On a side note, Viper and TrickDroid do have close ties from a developer standpoint. Viper is the ROM intended to offer total customization, where as TrickDroid is a more stock ROM.
Either way, Ive tried a lot of ROMs on my One but the above three have really stood out to me.
Hope that helps you in some way. Were pretty lucky in that our device has a lot of excellent devs working with it. :victory:
We generally don't allow best ROM threads or ROM comparison threads because they are usually very subjective. Try them all and choose what you think is the best, not what others think is the best Thread closed.
