New to the Galaxy Tab 10.1 / What ROM do you recommend?

I just purchased the Galaxy Tab and want to get it rooted with a custom ROM. I'm not new to this, just new to tablets. Does anyone recommend any certain ROM? And if so, what's good/better about it? I don't mind the stock look but I know it can get faster and smoother. If you also wouldn't mind sharing your setups and screenshots that would be helpful.

tried several roms and my immediate impression is that your actual Tablet model dictates how much choice you have -- the wifi only model has more options available but doesn't enable the 3G or 4G functionality necessary for those Tablets.
HC3.1 is your key: latest stock firmware is KI2 with KI1 overlap (KI1 pda/csc, KI2 modem) check either sammobile or use Check Fus 2.0 -- most developers are just in the process of porting their roms from the older KME structure and/or just getting a Tablet and determining their time commitment to develop a rom for the Tablet as well as their existing phone.
I suspect that a month from now the landscape will be a lot clearer.
Again, custom kernels are restricted to the one from Pershoot (again, check and use the 7500 or 7510 variant as appropriate) as the source from KI1 and KI2 is still so new.
The 10.1 is newly released in several markets: seems the development of programs is still at an early and vibrant stage.

I prefer rooted stock with pershoots kernel. In all its touchwiz glory

try overcome series. It is good and fast.

I tried some ROM´s as well and for me the best allrounder was Paris V5 especially a good support in thread.

Foreword to the developers - I think you do a fantastic work, given the circumstances, with no source code available - but I want to be sincere and share my own experience.
After trying ALL available ROM's (first time a month ago and this week for the second time) I concluded that the rooted stock TW (KME) is the best one. I know it doesn't have all the customization and tweaks found on other ROM's (which are of personal taste), but is by far the most stable and smooth ROM you can have on your GT7510.
The current ROM's have many bugs (you can see how frequently they are updated) and they really don't add much performance, if at all.
FC's, color problems, freezing, reboots and lags are some of the problems I experienced with all custom ROM's. The stock ROM is a product that passed a far stricter QA process, so it will certainly have less bugs like these.
I am sure many users in this forum will disagree with me, but this is my real experience.
And, just to be clear - YES! I love my GT7510! It is one of the best tablets today, if not the best!

Why is there no source code? Doesn't this defeat the purpose of Android?

There's only 4 custom ROMs, and only 2 are regularly updated. There's also an "extreme" stock ROM. I think you could try all three in about a week, and come up with your own opinion.

Google didn't release the source code for Honeycomb because they didn't want it ported to smartphones.
Now, with the release of Ice Cream Sandwich, we expect the release of the source code, because this is the convergence version between smartphones and tablets.
And this is good news, because yesterday one Italian operator confirmed that the GT 10.1 will receive this upgrade.
And then we will really see how wonderfully capable are the developers in this forum.

In paris V5 all day. +1 added to everyone that recommended it already.

I really like In Paris. I am currently on Bindroid, also fast and smooth and I love the themed status bar.

Good feedback here but neglects the other side of the story that the other custom rom are not just about customizations or themes i have tangible benefits in responsiveness and video playback, connectivity to adhoc networks etc so as commented it does not take long to try these out for yourself

My suggestion would be to try Overcome ROM. I switched from Paris because I prefer the stock honeycomb look and I find it smooth and fluid (not that In Paris isn't also good, just prefer Overcome's look and feel more).

ROM recommendations?

I love the stock ROM so far. Coming from a rooted Sammy 10.1 that had the full tablet UI, but I think with the 7" for factor the stock feels rgt for a change. I still would like to root and get whatever helpful mods on here that I can. An OC kernel with better battery life is always great too. What choices do you guys recommend for what I'm after?

Rooted with stock is working fine for me at the moment. I wanted root just to get otg thumb drive support for more space for my 8 Gig rig. I could not pass up that $200 price tag and still get some 64 gig loving Lol.

Can I use a custom kernel with rooted stock? Will it work as well? Maybe a bad question.

Most ROMs and kernels are so early along that you better be prepared for stability issues.
My recommendation is that you go look around the Android Development forums and the Original Development forums. Everyone has their different preferences and styles in their choices, so nobody here will be able to tell you exactly what to use.

Yeah. I read around and it does seem early bit the kernels look good so far. 1.5 with some undervolting seems stable. But the hybrid Roms aren't what I'm looking for. Maybe a cm10 when its ready.

That statement is very misleading, as there are several ROMS with zero known issues whatsoever, and kernels too. Sure, most of them are unstable, but you only really need one of each to be stable. For example Trinity is totally stable, never an issue with that Kernel. CM10 is stable as far as I have heard, I have not tried it. But I have used AOKP and encountered not the first issue since installing that wasn't cause by apps not liking JellyBean(which would have happened on stock). My advice is, root then backup stock. Then toss on a few ROMS and see how you feel about it. Can always go back. It's the rooting itself that voids your warranty. Once done there is really no reason not to try on a few ROMS. If it's stability you need stick to CM10 and AOKP in my opinion. Most other ROMS are simply based on these with more things added, and that is where your stability problems usually lie anyway.

Paranoid Android. It has everything I wanted that wasn't included in the stock image.

I loved PA but i had major problems with it, sadly, that required me to move on to another ROM.

I've used Trinity Kernel a few times now and have had stability issues, even without overclocking. I think it has something to do with deep sleep, but whatever it is, it's frustrating. I'm gonna wait a few weeks to let the problems get ironed out before using it again. I'm on CM10 at the moment, and for the most part it seems rather stable, but I do have random issues here and there, and I don't know if they're related to the ROM or not. The only reason I'm on it is because I'm a bit flash happy, and just find the nightly updates exciting.
For most users, my recommendation persists, stick with stock and give the development a bit more time. If a user is feeling adventurous, then your advice definitely applies: Get a good backup, and explore with a multitude of ROMs, for everyone has different tastes and preferences.

Well dear all the people talking about stability issues:
Not flaming, just expressing my opinion:
Morfic's trinity kernels are still experimental releases, I wouldn't be expecting stability because they are not classed as 'stable'
I used earlier versions of his kernels and faced no problems at all
So it depends on which kernel/kernel version as to whether or not its stable
I am on AOKP build 1 and using Faux's 008 mainline kernel, it works very well, super stable and super quick
No issues at all here, I guess because I am on two stable and tested releases

Best N7 ROMS?

Looking to get a N7 soon when the price drops start. Was wondering what do you guys think the best ROMs out so far are. Looking for silky smooth usage for the most part. Mainly will be used for web surfing, so whatever can make web pages load faster would be nice!
Will be using a different kernel that will allow better battery life as well.
So opinions on best ROMs? Would be nice if you've tried many recent ROM's to provide feedback on

If its mainly for surfing then stay on stock, install aosp browser as chrome is slow and switch to franco kernel.
A rom will not make amything faster only a kernel can. You can turn off animations to speed it up but even stock rom can do that.

I still want a different ROM. Such as Glazed Jelly bean, Paranoid or whatever they were. They were visually a lot more pleasing, and the ROMs themselves I believe were leaner as well?

MUST [email protected]!#@!! :laugh: Now a days... I pick a ROM, I pick a kernel that looks like it's frequently updated, well maintained and has an engaging developer and stick with it. There really is no best.. Just the one that suites your needs.. Speed.. Eh.. Unless you're a benchmark or FPS junkie almost any ROM on the N7 is going to fly.. This tablet is a beast..
Just read the threads in development.. Look to see what's up to 4.1.2 standards, see what is frequently updated, see what users feedback is, see how the dev responds to feedback, look at the features... Pick three and try them out.. I guarantee one will trap you and that's the one for you.. It'll just hit you.. A ROM that is the `best' for me may not necessarily be the best ROM for you.

This is great advice! I've lost count of how many ROMs have been on my n7 now. I settle on one for a week or so, then get itchy feet and try another ;p Grass is always greener and all that!

I recommend stock rom ，stablet

I am using paranoid android. The screen looks much bigger in tablet mode + the option of expanded desktop. Combined with franco kernel its a winner. I use my device for gaming and now franco has gpu freq change on the fly so it suits me well.

I'm running cyanogenmod with Franco kernel, after having a lot of trouble from another rom. My advice is to make sure a rom has been out a a day or so and read the thread to make sure there are no major problems.

There is no "best" ROM for a individual user. Different ROMs offer pro and cons, so it best for users to read the Development threads and make the own informed decision based on there needs. People often get a little over passionate about there preferred ROM, so these type of threads are best closed before the flames begin. The only exception to this is poll threads to determine the number of users using different ROMs.​

(Q) Nexus 4 ROMs

I have a quick question for everybody. I know I should flash and test myself but I don't have good data speeds to download everyrom. BBut I'm coming from the gs3 and I've never went away from samsung devices until now. I'm currently running pa (cause that's what I no and I love pie) but I wanna know what people think about other roms? What rom has great battery optimizations and is there any rom that boosts 3g speeds?

You really do have to try them all out for yourself. I would recommend trying PA, AOKP and CM. To see which one you like the best. And then try other ROMs as they are usually based around those 3. If you really cant decide PACman rom gives you all of the features available in these roms. As for battery life thats normally down to custom kernels which again you will have to try for yourself.

Go to development section and look for perfect ROM for you. In fact we can't say that one thread is better than another, they are different.

Feeling a bit overwhelemed

Hi all,
I have had my one for a while now and have been lurking around the forums for the most part. I have done S-OFF, Rooting, Recovery and many other tweaks. Now that 4.2.2 is hitting the rom scene for us I am wanting to dive into a rom but I am feeling a bit overwhelmed at the options.
Obviously the ROMS fall into 2 categories of sense and vanilla and there is obvious advantages to both sides. I want to try a more factory build so I have been considering flashing the recent dump of the GE One but there are some things like Pie control and custom DPI settings that I very much want to use and would like it if they were baked in rather than needed me to side load.
I am hoping that you all can give me some advice on some good 4.2 Vanilla roms to try out. Maybe Kang, Paranoid, CM... and I know there is a lot of other well known ROM makers around here with ROMS I do not recognize the names of (Carbon, Viper, Revolt). So if you have any recommendations I would love to hear them.

I am on the verge of the GE rom but going to wait for stock 4.2.2 then decide after if that helps

Yeah I wouldnt mind waiting but I dont mind flashing back and have been looking forward to trying out stock or AOSP on the one for a while just not sure where the various AOSP roms stand right now as far as ease of use, bugs, and general smoothness.

Just try out a few and see which ones you like

Once you've got the hang of flashing ROMs and using titanium backup to move your apps across them, you'll have no problem changing between ROMs regularly. Once you find something that works for you, stick with it for a while then see if anything else grabs your attention.

I am currently using ViperOne ROM, and love it. Its very smooth and offers a huge amount of customization options.
Aside from the above, I also can highly recommend Android Revolution HD, and TrickDroid. Both are very smooth, stable, and have large followings with great dev support right here on XDA. On a side note, Viper and TrickDroid do have close ties from a developer standpoint. Viper is the ROM intended to offer total customization, where as TrickDroid is a more stock ROM.
Either way, Ive tried a lot of ROMs on my One but the above three have really stood out to me.
Hope that helps you in some way. Were pretty lucky in that our device has a lot of excellent devs working with it. :victory:
