Difference between google and AOSP keyboard - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I installed a CM 10.2 build today, I think it comes with google keyboard.. (I don't know how to know that btw).
But I remember that with CM 10.1.2, if I keep pressed for example, "M" it would show ":". Now this keyboard only has long press options in the first row (the numbers, 1234567890).
Is it because I had the AOSP keyboard before?
Can I install it?

I am also having the freeze when using the keyboard.

Yes, you were using the aosp keyboard. It can be installed, but afaik it requires other files to go along with it, rather than just a simple apk install, meaning it would have to be made into a flashable zip. I'm not sure what, if any, files those might be so I can't help on that front. sorry.

I dont understand then...
If I am using google keyboard, why am I having the freeze? Wasn't it only if you were running aosp keyboard ?
I want it

The special aosp keyboard with long press alphabet to get symbol is from CM. If you install gapps from other ROM, it will remove the original CM keyboard and install the one without. The name is LatinIME.apk (Required some other lib for it to work)
All JSS rom come with special features: they all freezes...

Changing the key board? XDA keyboard?

Is it possible to change the key board on a phone? I was using DC's last rom and it had an XDA key board that I liked. I just flashed the .6 version of Sprint/HTC's stock 2.1 rom on my phone. I have rooted it so I can play with it a little and would like to put on another keyboard if possible.........
Thanks for your help..........
Lisa
sure, you can install and use other keyboards, never seen a xda keyboard
I remember in dc's Rom a little xda in the lower left corner.
Where can I find key boards and how would I install it?
After you install a new keyboard you need to long press in a text input box and change input method
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
find the apk and either do "adb install name.apk"
or put the apk in the /system/app folder on the phone and reboot

You're thinking of the HTC_IME Mod, a modded version of the HTC stock keyboard developed by an xda member. The apk can be found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624416
and once the apk files are on your SD card, you can use any file manager to install them.

Install ASUS Stock on-scrren keyboard on custom ROM?

Hi all,
Is there a way do install the stock (on-screen) keyboard on a custom ROM? I'm thinking about flashing my device with the latest CM10 ROM, but I really like ASUS' own keyboard.
So, has anyone an idea how to extract the keyboard; already has it; ported it; or anything at all that might help?
Cheers
I would really like this too, bump.

I'm just thinking out loud. If you were to root the tablet, couldn't you pull the ASUS keyboard apk from the tab, and then push it back after you've installed your custom ROM?
Or, I'm trying out Apps2Zip on my Galaxy S3 (gt-i9300) and perhaps you could use that to flash the keyboard back onto the tablet.
I'm not in the mood of flashing a custom ROM to the tablet and finding out that it wont work..
You need to be rooted get the apk some lib files and a few modules i believe

Well, I got root. And I've used App2Zip to extract the apk. How would I know which libs and modules I would use?

Yeah, same here..
Same here! I'd like to have my ASUS Keyboard back. The common Android Keyboards are so f*cking ugly... also the Layout sucks azz. Can't find any similar on in the store. I'd even pay up to 2$ for it, if it's stable and nais!
The One provided here keeps looping in FCs...
I know it's for PRIME, but testing it won't hurt

[STRIPPED] [ENG] Default ics keyboard in 1.7MB

Hi all.... Since I don't use any other language than English, and nor do I plan to learn one, I stripped the ics keyboard into 1.7MB. I thought it better to share it with you all.
The original apk is 12.7MB. The apk was taken from hephappy 's cm9 rc2 pre final. Now I have another 11MB to spare and to put apps from /data into /system.
If it was anything useful to you, press thanks!

Install Jelly Bean 4.2 Keyboard from the market and use that one instead
I can't download from the market on account of I don't have a working keyboard. ill try downloading the apk.
there must be something wrong with gapps. it runs fine before installing gapps. after installing gapps i installed the keyboard but the rom is very unresponsive, the account setup kept glitching, couldnt get the market to connect to the internet, and the home button doesnt work. whats going on? would someone mind sending me a backup that is working and already has gapps installed or point me in the direction where i can find that.

I've tried a couple and the same thing happens. The one I've been using is gapps-jb-20121212.zip. I'll try again.
I'm downloading the one off of cyanogenmod website under nexus 7 grouper. I'm pretty sure I don't have the gsm version but I'll check.

Having the same problems. Would like to see an answer to this. I also used the files recommended by CM.
Went with SmoothRom(built off CM10) which had gapps built in and I have no problems now

What's the deal with cm development on this tablet. I even just tried to download the play store apk and it force closes.
Idk I am pretty dissapointed because I've always loved the CM ROMs but thats what XDA is for.

I'm having the same difficulty with CM 10 on a Sony Xperia Arc. Have tried multiple kernels (included with CM Roms, or not) and Gapps packages. If it is possible to load a stock or other keyboard after flashing a ROM, I'd like to hear about this.

[Q] AOSP Keyboard?

Hey guys,
I had the stock aosp keyboard, but with longpress symbols enabled. I flashed gapps from PA3 and my keyboard has gone back to stock, does anybody have the .apk with long-press symbols they could please upload? Thanks a lot.
Here's an image of what I mean.

Thing is I don't recall where I got it from, all I've done is flash CM10.1 and I had it. As I switched to PA3 even using CM10.1 gapps the keyboard isn't what I'm mentioning here :/

use pagapps from jan 08. in the latest package it was exchanged for themability but yeah now that i look at it, the longpress actions are gone. if anyone has a perfectly working IME that will put all troubles to rest, please share.
Sorry for necro this thread but I have just come from CM, and the only thing I miss dearly is the keyboard.... I've tried numerous methods to no avail. Apparently the newer version of PAGapps doesn't include AOSP keyboard anymore...And I couldn't find the gapps from jan08. Anyone found a solution yet?
Take LatinIME.apk and libjni_latinime.so from CM 10.1 and replace the equivalent version in the ROM you want to use.
I do the opposite as I prefer the AOSP keyboard in CM 10.1 and it works fine. The AOSP files might be called LatinImeGoogle.apk and libjni_latinimegoogle.so but double-check and make a backup before changing any files
EDIT: Here are the files from the latest CM 10.1 nightly (27th March 2013). This is NOT a flashable ZIP so don't ever try...
