Changing the key board? XDA keyboard? - Hero CDMA General

Is it possible to change the key board on a phone? I was using DC's last rom and it had an XDA key board that I liked. I just flashed the .6 version of Sprint/HTC's stock 2.1 rom on my phone. I have rooted it so I can play with it a little and would like to put on another keyboard if possible.........
Thanks for your help..........
Lisa

sure, you can install and use other keyboards, never seen a xda keyboard

I remember in dc's Rom a little xda in the lower left corner.
Where can I find key boards and how would I install it?

After you install a new keyboard you need to long press in a text input box and change input method
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App

find the apk and either do "adb install name.apk"
or put the apk in the /system/app folder on the phone and reboot

You're thinking of the HTC_IME Mod, a modded version of the HTC stock keyboard developed by an xda member. The apk can be found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624416
and once the apk files are on your SD card, you can use any file manager to install them.

Install soft keyboard onto the Rogers HTC Dream without root

So I noticed a bunch of you are having the 'issue' of the official Rogers HTC Dream not having a software keyboard like the Rogers HTC Magic.
This was posted on haykuro's blog:
http://www.droiddeveloper.com/hrbuilds/htc_ime.zip
Original Link Here: http://haykuro.theiphoneproject.org/?p=213
This is newer than the HTC TouchInput IME that is included on the HTC Magic and is compatible with the HTC Dream. All you have to do to install this keyboard is to extract the .apk file from the zip file and install it with a program such as ASTRO or AppInstaller (no need to push the libt9.so). Afterwards, you will notice that TouchInput will appear in your Locales & Text menu where you can calibrate the keyboard and change settings.
I'm not 100% sure if this works as I don't currently have a device to test with me anymore but I'm pretty sure it worked last time I tried it.
Good luck!
Worked on my currently not unrooted Rogers Dream!
Thanks!

ahhh... the double negative. hehehe.
I didn't have any issues with the htc_ime.apk is this keyboard any better, or is it just the same thing?
hey im new to the whole android thing ive tried to install the htc soft keyboard but had no luck. right now i have the t-mobile my touch 3g..any help plz
Another way I found useful
Go to the market, and find the app "any soft keyboard"
What you do is just search keyboard and keep on scrolling down until you find it, then install it. Then go to local and select any soft keboard
voila
also available in many other languages + dvorak for those interested.

Getting HTC_IME Evo to work

I've been trying to figure out how to install the evo keyboard to the mattc sense, I just need the keyboard with the arrows any help appreciated
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I want that as well very bad and I was keep on asking for help as well but it seem that no one knows or no one wants to help.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696543
there's a mod, but so far only works for desire (with sense) on 2.1.
Can't use that since you need to install via recovery which HD2Droid doesn't have & I tried an evo_ime.apk , hope someone figures it out, it sucks not having no arrows.

When i had a g1 the devs used odexing to speed up the system. If i recall correctly you need both the .odex and .apk in the same directory for it to work as well as an odexed rom. So i dont think that version will work for us.
do you have the apk for evo, so I can try.
just download the fresh evo rom from evo forum. All apks are in it.
Is this made for hd2 or native evo only?

AS A WORKAROUND:
Get htc_ime_jonasl_hires22_27.zip (keyboard) from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624416 (Click -> High resolution version (Froyo/2.2)) Now you can use VOLUME KEYS AS ARROWS when keyboard is open. (Enable it from android settings -> keyboard and set it by tapping and holding a text box. Also goto settings, languages and keyboard, htc ime mod settings, user interface, volume keys , select move cursor.
Now I am able to get the cursor where I want easily.

ANDROID Swype

I've installed many swype builds but when I go to Keyboard setting there is no swype option, swype is installed and selected but no option in keyboard settings to select the swype keyboard using mdeejay froyo sense 1.1 and hastarin kernel
Did you long press in the reply area to bring up input options?
Swype doesnt seem to work with any of the sense builds you just cant select it as an input method from the keyboard. It works perfectly in all stock froyo builds and can be selected by long pressing on the options button on the soft keyboard. The only stock build it doesnt work on is darkstones latest so I assume his version isnt based on stock.
Mark.
i use SlideIT keyboard for sense builds. not as good as swype in a few areas, but basically the same thing

I am able to use swype version 2.4.44.10912.t100 with froyostone sense v.3.2 and mdeejay froyosense series 1.1 clean.
working swiftly on both.
I cannot seem to be about to change the input method at all on a build based on Froyostone Sense V.3.2. Any ideas? I am pretty sure I installed the stock keyboard files right, but there's not even an option in Language and Keyboard to switch it.
You guys are genius, the long press on reply method allowed me to select swype and it shows but but I can't "swype", individual words work but not swype. I will be trying the above mentioned version to see if that works.
Quick update the Swype_v2.4.44.10912_WVGA_English_ANDROID version works a charm.
Thanks for the help guys, now for the battery life issue......
I've attached Swype (Multi Language!(even Dutch supported)) I already use this for months... It works like a charm. I used to have the same problem, it seems there are a lot of different versions of swype but This one will work on Android.
Go to settings - keyboard and turn on Swype. Then go to your massages click a message and press and hold the typing field, you get a bar wich says input, click that and change to swype This version works defenitely.
Please do not post warez on xda.
Hope this helps
Use HTC sync 3.0 on your PC or use a file explorer program(like Astro) on your droid to install the .apk file
Plz remove link swype is warez now as they closed the beta test and talked to site admin about it..

Swype Keyboard HTC legend....

Hi there,
I'm looking for the Swype keyboard for the HTC Legend. I'm currently running a Froyo Rom. I tried one from this website, which didn't work so well, I don't know if it was me or the application because when I opened it, it told me that my trial period expired and that I should upgrade my Swype keyboard application. When I tried using Swype, it would show the line going across but it just wouldn't do anything when I go through the letters, I can only tap on the letters, which would be useless because I would just go back to the normal input method. Any tips? Ideas? Or links to a good Swype Keyboard? The one I tried using but didn't work was:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=660206
Thanks for the help.
I have that problem as well ever since the latest version of Swype and after I upgraded to Froyo. Not sure whose fault is it. I switched to Gingerbread keyboard since.
try this rar with version 1.6 swype apk file in it
EDIT: as asked by MOD
you can try to register on swype beta site, and get a newer version of swype. i'm using it, and it work like a charm.
I'mm using Swype since about 3 month. I registered to the beta-program, a friend of mine registered last week and got his version about an hour later. I'm using cyanogenmod 6.1 (Froyo) and swype works like a charm. I also tried cynogenmod 7 (Gingerbread), but there swype closes always.
Get rid of d/l links, or a MOD will. I won't report it, I'm just warning you. On XDA this is seen as warez, and Swype has asked that all download links are removed from here, and all other forums. This sucks, I know. Apply to beta test and hope.
Sorry guys
im on the official swype beta and running froyo...seems like everytime i reboot my phone i have to re-install swype? anyone else have this annoying problem?
Off to Gingerbread
I'm sorry if this is a little off topic, but can anyone please send me a working apk of the Gingerbread keyboard?
I'm on Blayo's ROM, 0.5. I've been trying the app in the market with no success. The app keeps getting FC as soon as I touch the keyboard.
Thank you very much!

I think that is the case if you install swype on sd.
Try to move the app to your phone.

I am having the same problem, but I'm using data2ext on balyo's b05 rom.I solve this problem by switching input method to touch input and then back to swype.swype is back to normal.

I am using swype on my legend, every reboot you need to long press in a text box and select the android keyboard, then doit again and select swipe, its a known bug. From what i understand it is a problem with timing. Hope this helps.
Sent from my HTC Legend using XDA App
I was using Swype on Froyo (CyanogenMOD 6.1) without problems. With Gingerbread (CyanogenMOD 7 experimental builds) I had some trouble, as the Swype-keyboard disapeared immediately. After uninstalling Swype and reinstalling it via Swype-Installer everything works again as it should.

Difference between google and AOSP keyboard

Hi,
I installed a CM 10.2 build today, I think it comes with google keyboard.. (I don't know how to know that btw).
But I remember that with CM 10.1.2, if I keep pressed for example, "M" it would show ":". Now this keyboard only has long press options in the first row (the numbers, 1234567890).
Is it because I had the AOSP keyboard before?
Can I install it?
I am also having the freeze when using the keyboard.

Yes, you were using the aosp keyboard. It can be installed, but afaik it requires other files to go along with it, rather than just a simple apk install, meaning it would have to be made into a flashable zip. I'm not sure what, if any, files those might be so I can't help on that front. sorry.
I dont understand then...
If I am using google keyboard, why am I having the freeze? Wasn't it only if you were running aosp keyboard ?
I want it

The special aosp keyboard with long press alphabet to get symbol is from CM. If you install gapps from other ROM, it will remove the original CM keyboard and install the one without. The name is LatinIME.apk (Required some other lib for it to work)
All JSS rom come with special features: they all freezes...
