Hi! I've got a Nexus 4 running CM 10.2 / Android 4.3 and I've been trying to spoof the Mac Address it sets when tethering, to no success.
The reason I'm trying to do this is that the Nintendo 3DS now uses this nifty new "Street Pass Relay" feature which checks the Access Point Mac Address to exchange high scores and other data with strangers around your zone, but with this, we can get data from strangers around the world.
The Native tethering app generates a random Mac Address every time I start it, and I've tried several options (including busybox ifconfig hw ether wlan0 xx:yy:zz:11:22:33 ) but none of the options have worked so far.
Has anyone done this before? Via an app or a script, I don't mind.
Thanks.
Wireless Tether for Root Users has MAC address spoofing as a feature as of 3.3 pre2. That version is not in the play store yet but the APK can be downloaded from the project page (Google it, I can't link to things. Or go to the #DS subreddit and find the thread about it there someone links to it in the comments). I tried getting it to work earlier but turns out the app won't work at all with a Galaxy Nexus. Others have had luck with it though.

I tried both versions of that app, 3.3beta 2 and 3.4 experimental to no success in my Nexus 4 , Schiff is why I'm asking for other alternatives
Glad I'm not the only one going nuts trying to accomplish this exact same task for the exact same reason on the exact same device I'm at a dead end at the moment but I'll be sure and post if I figure something out - hopefully you'll do the same.
trying to do exactly the same thing but with GS3 with paranoid android and it keeps failing at creating ad-hoc...
any ideas? i kinda want those streetpasses XD
No luck so far, but if I get this to work, I'll probably repackage the Wifi Tether App into a "StreetPass Hotzone" app with pre-enabled Blocking for non-3DS devices and Mac Address cycling to get easy hits

I wish you the best of luck. That sounds epic. I finally gave up and just set up an extra router that was already running dd-wrt. I'll only get one hit every 8 hours with the same MAC but it's better than nothing.

Hey if anyone happens to figure this thing out please let me know, I've been trying to do the same thing for a while now and I just came across this post. I will continue to search for a solution but if anyone finds one first please let me know what you did
Welcome to the club! I've been trying this on my Captivate with CM 10.1 with no success yet.

I'm at work right now, and haven't been able to mess around d with this, but digging through the files late last night I found in the ini file holding the macaddress (One of 2 files you need to edit apparently to spoof it) there was an option to mutate the mac for tethering usage.... The system folder is /etc/wifi if anyone wants to take a closer look... If not I'll try when I get home tonight...
Hi, i'm developing an app called StreetPass Riilay, it does pretty much what you're searching but right now it's not compatible with all the devices i invite you to check it out , it's on Gbatemp and in reddit in the 3ds subreddit.
this is a video of a test that i did.

I had that exact problem. I wound up backing up my data partition using TWRP, backing up my sdcard partition to my PC, and then doing a fresh reinstall of CM using TWRP. After doing a factory reset in TWRP I then booted the phone and signed into my Google account. I then restored my data partition in TWRP and my sdcard, and everything worked after that.

Dying to get this working.
Tried all the apps I can find, including Zurces, but no luck.
Has anyone succeeded yet?
Any news on this? It's so frustating having a theorically very quality phone and getting stucked in a simple thing like this.

There is a way to spoof N4's mac which is explained in these forums. Use the search feature and you'll find it.

I am going to be rooting my girlfriend's Verizon Droid 2 so that she can use tethering on it.
a few primary questions:
1. It looks like the best way right now is to use the instructions in this thread, right?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782556
2.Her computer does not have a wireless card. Are there any ways she can tether via USB? would she need additional software?
3. Any suggestions for user friendly / stable custom roms? I love Cyanogenmod which I have running on my Sprint Evo but it doesn't appear to be available for the Droid 2 yet.
Thanks in advance for help!
1. That's the method I used to root and it worked pretty easily. Just make sure that you install the motorola drivers before ever plugging the phone into the computer. You may be able to get it to work, but I've had terrible problems with my Droid 1 drivers.
2. I've never used USB tether so I'm not completely sure
3. I'd set her up with Fission using the Fission Rom Manager + bootstrap recovery. It'd be the easiest way for her to keep up with stable releases. Other ROMs you have to load the update.zip onto the sd card and update through clockwork manually.
If you are just looking at USB Tethering, just go get EasyTether. That's the easiest way to go about it. They say after 10 days, you won't be able to view secure sites. There is a way around this...
Uninstall the app, then reinstall it again.
As for rooting, that method you posted or the Z4Root method.
As for ROM's, take your pick. I am using Fission.
thanks for the replies guys.
so no one knows of a USB tether program free for root users? That stinks!
proxoid will usb tether by way of a socks proxy. You'll have to configure a socks proxy for each app on the client you want to use...

Kind of just told you.
EasyTether. It is free. Only problem is that after 10 days, you don't have https access, but like I said...
When you get to that. Uninstall the app, and reinstall it again, and it'll work again.
Thanks - Yeah I was aware of easy tether but that makes email impossible / hard she doesn't want to mess with that every so often. May be worth it to just by PDA net.
Just strange with wifi tether being available I would have thought a wired tether would be a much simpler feat.

I shared your excitement but as I'm sure you discovered, it still does work! You need to log in with a Google ID, but when you do, it tells you that there is no Android phone associated with your account.
I don't have an Android phone but I wonder if I did have one and registered it, would the A7 then be able to access the Market?
Really, Google has made the situation worse because now I can see all the great apps in the Market but can't access them! There more bliss in the ignorance when I couldn't see the apps at all!

Unfortunately, I updated to the Feb 4 firmware 1 day before I learned of of this...so now I wait!
I went to market.android.com on my device. Signed in with my Google Apps account, the same one I used to sign into Google Apps services on my A7. It shows everything I have downloaded using Dexters mod marketplace in it's history or whatever it's called. Also, I can choose install on any non installed app and immediately the app downloads to the A7. I didn't get any messages about the device not being registered. it just seems to work. I am in Canada as that may make a difference.

You can still use Dexter's MOD, you'll just need to do a back up and wipe/reset the device before updating.
Is there another way to get android without Dexer's Mod? My sister is getting one of these and I want to install the Market on it for her but I don't want her to have root (If it were mine it would be a different story). There should be some way to install the market and associated services to run it with an APK file without needing to root it, like my Archos 70.

I have a dumb question! The mod by Bestialbub (What a name!) looks pretty simple, and it is what I am leaning towards. I really like my A7 and do not want to mess with it too much. I may even just decide to wait to see if Elocity comes out with an official patch. I just flashed my unit to the newest firmware. Do I need to do this again, as stated in the first part of the directions, or can I just boot into the recovery mode and flash using the file that I download? Also, what is the risk for doing this? Have many of you ran into issues with it? Thanks!
my market patch works fine w the latest update. check out my twitter under the same name for updated recoveries that will let you backup your rom, flash my mod, and restore back to where you were if you dont like it.
my mods a small one that can be applied anytime over the existing firmware. a factory reset should be done after that will wipe your data and let the google apps install properly on next rom boot.
i would suggest to wipe/factory reset w my clockworkmod recovery (on my twitter) as it should leave your internal storage partition w your media downloads alone. note; i havent actually tried that suggestion (reset) from cwm, but it sounds like a good idea.

I just ran this update, and followed the instructions to the letter. Everything seemed to go well, however, when the device rebooted, I see no Market link. What did I do wrong?
Never mind! I figured it out. The update.zip file I had on my sdcard was the elocity firmware file. I copied the patch to the wrong spot!! DOH!!!.;p).
Alas, Woe is me.
I went and loaded things (wallpapers, eBooks, games, etc.) onto my A7.... then I find this forum!
Is there an easy way (perhaps with a free, non-Marketplace, app) to back up all of this onto an SD card (or even a USB flash drive) and then re-install it after installing one of these mods?
I'm sure I could copy everything over individually, but there's got to be an easier way....is there?
*NEW INSTRUCTIONS*
Today I figured out how to get Amazon Video On Demand app on my phone and watch videos
I did this with a rooted phone, I am not sure if you phone needs to be rooted to accomplish this task. I have attached the required files to accomplish this task. These steps are assuming you have a rooted phone.
REQUIREMENTS:
Download attached APKs
Wireless connectivity
VooDoo OTA for rooted phones (https://market.android.com/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper)
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Copy downloaded APKs to your phone
2. Install each APK and make sure to click DONE after each installs
3. Enable phones Wireless and connect via WiFi
4. Go to your phone SETTINGS>ACCOUNT AND SYNC
5. Press ADD ACCOUNT
6. Press AMAZON and enter your Amazon Prime credentials
7. Start the VooDoo OTA app
8. Press TEMP.UN-ROOT and allow the program to temporarily unroot your phone
9. Reboot your phone
10. When the phone comes up, still be attached via wireless and try your app
I hope this works for everyone who tries, please report your findings
Currently this app only works on wireless it will not work with your cell signal. I am looking to see if I can figure out how to enable the app to use the cell signal, I'm not a developer but I do have an idea to try!
ill try this on my Amaze 4G when i get home

Are you doing this on a phone or on your Fire?
I wonder if you can remove root from some alternative method and see if you can run VOD, perhaps remove BurritoRoot if that's what you have installed.
There is something about CM7 that amazon does not like. I have never gotten it to work on CM7, even after temp unrooting. But if I did the same thing on a none cm7 rom, it worked fine. Go figure.

It's on a fire. Before I flashed CM7 over, I was running just a rooted fire, and voodo ran just fine allowing amazon video to work when needed. Would be a shame if I couldn't get it to run on CM7.. not a huge loss, just would like to see if it could work on this variant..

Dear All,
For more than a week, I have been frustrating about the 403 error on my Galaxy I9502 Duos. I have searched many places on the Internet, and I still couldn't make it work. The problem is really killing me, and I spent the whole last night writing emails with and trying solutions from Google support team, and in the end, they said they couldn't help me due to that my cellphone is a rooted device. That's ridiculous! How could I have the Google Apps without rooting my I9502?
So I have tried many ways that I can find, but still, the problem is not solved, please help me and you are my last hope!
Here are the information:
1. I'm using a stock rom based on Android 4.2.2:
Baseband version: I9502ZNUCMH3
Build number: JDQ39.I9502ZNUCMH4
2. I installed below package:
gapps-jb-20130812-signed.zip
3. Methods I have tried:
3.a I have found below link in xda, and tried below methods, and it doesn't help:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1567456
3.a.1: Wiping cache, clear data, clear cache and force stop all below components and restart:
Google Play Store, Google Play Store Service, Google Services Framework
But this doesn't work!
3.a.2: Remove Account:
And I even tried to add another google account of my family, but still doesn't work as well!
3.a.3: Reset both two APNs to the default:
Note, I mainly use WIFI. And both two APN has been reset to default. But this doesn't work!
3.a.4: Using proxy:
I have GAEProxy and Ladder Trial installed. But this doesn't work no matter the proxy is opened or closed.
3.a.5: Revert back to the old play store:
I am using the oldest play store together with gapps-jb-20130812-signed.zip, and obvious this doesn't work too.
3.a.6: Switch to another account:
I switched to another google account, but this doesn't work.
3.a.6: Factory Reset
I didn't do this yet, but I am seriously thinking about this。。。
4. Beside this problem, I also found that my browser can not access mail.google.com
And there is a similar error message:
403. That’s an error.
Your client does not have permission to get URL /2 from this server. That’s all we know.
All, I have tried all my best, and still, I can't figure out this problem. Please help me!!!!!
Thanks.

Really? I really have no idea how to install Google App without root on Galaxy S4 I9502 ? Could you please shed some light on it? Thanks!
In addition, I personally think this is not a issue relate to root as my worked phoned had worked for month until this came up suddenly.
Have tried almost the same thing...
I've done almost the same things as wangmengj (except for trying another google account). Still no success.
My device is an UMI X1 :cyclops:
Also:
My google play doesn't update by himself, but I tried removing all updates (reset to version 3.3x.sumthin'), then manually installed the newest version (I believe it is 4.4.22).
Still no success.

I have no idea what're you doing and why.
First of all, to check if your Google account is OK, log in from laptop, desktop or other PC to Google Play.
Error 403 usually means that the server refuses your authentication, in other words: you do not have the credentials accepted by the server.
If using PC you'll have same error - that would mean that there is something wrong with the account.
Second, usually (it was same in case of ALL my android phones) - the Google Play was part of the ROM and was accessible as soon as I input the Google account settings. And definitely, installing the apps using the Google Play does NOT requires root, otherwise ALL android phones would be rooted as sold.
Hi,
I am also getting the same error and had done the same as the above including a factory reset. Still I am getting the same error. I can login to my account via pc but I cannot go to my google setting via my tablet's web browswer. I also realised my device is no longer listed in my google play under setting (via PC). Can someone shed some light to it?
I had the exact same problem on my I9502, and now all settled. Here's what I've done:
- Find app "Root Explorer" and install it.
- With RE, go to root/etc
- Delete the file "hosts" or simply change its name.
Then it should work!

Thanks.

I have had this problem for months now.
I too have been back and forth with google "support" via email, they are ****ing useless.
The issue is on THEIR end.
When I login to the play store on my computer, and I try and download an app, it throws and error immediately after clicking install - it has nothing to do with my device, the issue exists with my account on their end somewhere, but they refuse to acknowledge this and fix it, I really don't know what to do.

I had the exact same problem on my I9502, and now all settled. Here's what I've done:
- Find app "Root Explorer" and install it.
- With RE, go to root/etc
- Delete the file "hosts" or simply change its name.
Then it should work!

Dear All,
For more than a week, I have been frustrating about the 403 error on my Galaxy I9502 Duos.
So I have tried many ways that I can find, but still, the problem is not solved, please help me and you are my last hope!

hi all,
is there any solution to this issue without dealing with root ?
I have already tried all the exist idea...
Hello is there anyway to sideload apps to the mojo? I did a factory reset and now I can't sign in to the play srore. I know adb won't work, but is there another way?
Try the ES Filemanager app linked in the "MOJO" link on the Home Screen. It asks you to download from Google Play, however... you might want to check your account on a PC if youre having password problems.
ES filemanager should let you access whatever apk's you have in your downloads folder or external device and install them from there.

Yep I tried it like that and no go. I don't know why but I can't sign in to the play store or gmail. I can use the useless mail app that came with it, but that can't install apk's. All I did was do a factory reset and this happened. If I sign in via a browser and select the device sense I'm not signed in via the play store it won't download anything.

Is your google account still on there? Try removing it and then re-adding it.

Yep tried that no luck. Google account won't get paste the sign in. Says cannot connect to server. My console didn't want to do an update even in the beginning. I left it on for around 8 hours and it never said update available. So I rooted had issues with apps. Did a factory reset and I'm here now. I hate Android in general. It's garbage I thought maybe having a console that runs native Android would be better than the Ouya. I was wrong. Mojo is junk. Well I wasted $200 on a console that's worth $.25. Don't think we'll ever see a IOS console though.

Sorry to hear the inconveniences youve been having. You're definitely connected to the internet on it (via wifi or ethernet), correct? For the firmware 0202 update, you would be running the software update from the all apps menu.
The mmm3 root is a separate process, but will need to be re-applied after applying any firmware updates.
Have you tried adding any other google play accounts to it?

I'm on 110 now and it won't update what ever I try. To answer your first question, yes I'm online via ethernet cable. I also tried wifi. Both have the same effect. I can connect to the internet via browser, but no go on signing in to google play store. I tried calling play store and they say your device isn't supported. I'm guessing it will be a pain to get a hold of mad catz. My system never wanted to update then I did the restore and can't sign in to the play store. Via the system upgrade it says can not write to sdcard/download/. I don't get how it can update if the system is running. I would do it in recovery, but there's no recovery. I don't think mad catz thought the system through, but I don't know if other people are having the same issue as me. A system shouldn't become unusable after doing a restore, but mine is. As far as the last question. I don't have another google account. Even if I try to create one it says can not connect to server.

Well.. what did you do before the restore?
You had root access.. perhaps you broke the file permission?
Did you edit any OS files?
It would explain the fact you don't have write access to your internal storage.

The only thing I did was add media_rw to external storage along with sdcard_rw. After I added that I still couldn't write to usb (media_rw), but had no issues with the sdcard.

Yeah, I see your thread:

Wow, this is your 3rd thread about the same issue... which you have caused yourself and then blame Mad Catz for?? not cool!
You'll somehow have to figure out how to revert the changes you made... I suggest you contact the source of what you did.
Good luck trying to brick your MOJO!

Seriously? thats like saying i went on my HP laptop deleted all partitions (including recovery partition) and now the im unable to factory reset it. How darn you HP!! Face it, you messed up. So instead of blaming madcatz you should man (or women) up and say you made a mistake.

i agree with gwaldo on this one and am i the only one that is wondering why this is in Android development section?
@tauntt
if you raise a support request at the MC site, i'm sure they'll help with a flashable rom
Just tell them your a noob and don't blame them.
@Mad Catz Rich, any chance of putting it on the FTP?
I'm sure you'd get ask for it a lot?
Question, why won't ADB work? You can connect to it via the network, find the IP of the MOJO via your router or the settings app, then hit "adb connect 0.0.0.0" where 0.0.0.0 is your IP. Then you can adb shell, adb install, etc. Works fine here for sideloading APKs.

If you haven't already, I suggest setting up a ticket at http://support.madcatz.com so our support team can take a look and help resolve this.

Cool thanks I'll try that. Like said before I'm not an android fan. I have 3e android devices and 3 are buggy. 2 of them are rooted. I didn't have an issue writing to the sdcard before the restore. So it's odd. Thanks again.
Just reading through this gave me an idea for the Mad Catz team if they are listening. Perhaps including a File Manager in the next firmware update would be a good idea. Rhythm Software's File Manager (not the "HD" version) is free. It works great with the Mojo and at least would give the end user immediate access to the device and the ability to side load things. Tablets and other android devices used to include a file manager in the firmware (ie: Toshiba Thrive, Sony Tablet S). I wonder why they stopped doing that. It is a good idea.
