auto brightness or something else? - 7" Kindle Fire HD General

I'm hoping someone can help or even explain, im not sure if this a problem normal or just me!
Basically bought a kindle fire hd a week ago sold mine a few months back and wanted it back as the nexus 7 didnt do it for me...
So i bought it back last week turned auto-brightness off and started playing games reading books etc and noticed that if the screen im looking at is dark the brightness will turn down "dim" and if its a light screen it will get brighter..so i checked auto-brightness and it was still off so i locked the screen and unlocked it and boom problem solved...long story short i thought it was fault so returned it for a replacement 4 kindle fire hd's later and still the same thing...just to explain if i turn the tab off completly then on i always check auto-brightness and its always off..but the screen still dims and brightens depending on the image im viewing or the game im playing and a quick lock/unlock of the screens solves it completely then if i turn the tab off again and on it comes back...not including the 4 i have had in this last i also today checked two store "show models" and they are doing the same thing has anyone else noticed this or can anyone explain why this is happening? its the kindle fire hd 7" completly stock...

Lux is awesome. In the Play App Store.

yeah ive tried a few auto-bright apps they all yeild the same result they work but that intial auto-brightness cant be turned off without screen lock/unlock even though its set to off... very strange

[Q] Nexus 7 screen turning itself on?

Hi all,
I'm experiencing an issue on my stock 4.1.1 Nexus 7. The screen seems to be turning itself on randomly. It normally turns off again but may toggle on/off quite a few times. Then it seems to go for a while whitout turning on. Bit odd.
Anyone else experienced this or have any thoughts on a reason for it?
Thanks
Same problem here, except with a Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
I just updated to 4.1.1 today and this is the first time I've seen it happen. Was previously on 4.02 without issues.
I have had the same problem. It seems to happen in the evening and I wondered whether the case was causing it to overheat. Seems to be OK when I take it out of the case. I phoned Google and was told that it hadn't happened before. I will contact them again if it doesn't get any better.
Sorry. Misread the post. Mine goes to sleep, not turns on

Same here but mine is not exactly stock.
I have installed Apex Launcher plus numerous apps. I thought maybe it was the launcher doing it. But at this point... I have no idea. Just noticed it tonight coming on and then going off within 1 sec. but its random. it may do it once within an hour, or it may do it up to 5 times within a min... then go several minutes completely black screen. Crazy stuff. I thought maybe it was getting a message at first but then realized I had the WiFi off on my phone so it was dead to any incoming messages/wifi. I am really curious as to what is causing it and will be following this post as well as others quite frequent. Also.... the latest app that I have downloaded was OSMOS HD. it wasn't waking then sleeping before that app... just my 2 cents.
Hi Qbensis,
By stock, I just mean not rooted and not running any custom firmware. I had various apps and the like installed.
I have actually since rooted my N7 and installed a few custom ROMs and since then have not seen the issue at all. If you want to stay stock, I assume the issue will be fixed in the next update
I have seen this a few times. Middle of the night I look over and the screen is on then off. I check the power usage overnight and I see little blips of screen on when looking at the graph. Not sure whats causing it (I figure a app).
Same Problem over here, any solutions???
I'm on stock 4.1.2 and having the same problem, not rooted. Creeped me out in the middle of the night when it goes on and off.
N7 Random Turn On
Same here on 4.2.1. I carry in front pocket all the time with screen facing leg and feel heat when it happens. Has even done it when in Power Off mode and still does it. I thought that would prevent it for sure. Very irritating and drains battery. We Winter in 55+ community and drive around in golf carts. I am starting to wonder if WiFi spots trigger it. Will continue to track behavior and search other forums. Curious that there have not been any solid suggestions or solutions.
Happens to my rooted but stock 4.2.1. It happens randomly when I recharge using a battery pack (4AA) as opposed to charging using regular AC. It's annoying as heck! I don't know how to get this fixed!
I've been getting this on both SmoothROM and raspbeanjelly, and it's very irritating.
It has to be an app that is causing this. I initially thought perhaps it was GPS Status, because I caught it in the notification bar a few times when the screen turned on.
My device definitely isn't hot when it happens.
I'm suspecting the Email app, Maps, or Facebook.
EDIT - not any of them either. I'll test Beautiful Widgets next.
Okay guys, try this.

I'd been suffering from this for weeks, factory reset, reinstalled and changed out ROMs, installed apps one by one over the course of several days to keep an eye on what might be triggering it etc. Nothing worked for more than 2-3 days at most, and the issue always came back in one way or another.
It was causing me to have to turn the Nexus off when not in use because it would be draining battery (15-20% overnight compared to 2-3% when the issue wasn't present).
Then I stumbled upon that guide and using Gemini I disabled Maps from auto-running, turned off Latitude, and so far so good.
If it works for you too, be sure to hit thanks on Karpfenhai's post!
I was having this same problem on my Nexus 7 running stock 4.2.2 rooted with SuperSU. Finally tracked it down to having installed BetterBatteryStats and for some reason, I had not granted it perpetual root. It was causing the device to wake and turn the display on for random times (up to 13 hours, which killed the battery), not always showing the SU request dialogue. I granted perpetual SU privilege to BetterBatteryStats and problem went away.
Try taking out the battery and clean out the USB port with a toothpick. This worked for me. All the dust that accumulates in the post can cause the phone to think it's charging.

Screen brightness almost 0

Hi,
So I literally picked my N7 up an hour ago, came home, got to the home screen. Played around with it and plugged it into my laptop. Suddenly, it looked like the screen turned off. After a bit of poking around, it turns out the screen isn't off, the brightness is just ridiculously low.
Using my Nexus One as a flashlight, I'm able to just about make out the contents of the screen. I've turned auto-brightness off and WiFi, but no cigar, the screen is still barely visible.
Is this defective hardware, or has a software update fixed this for anyone? I was prompted to install an update, but in my excitement, I dismissed it.
Feeling like this right now ->
silly question but have you tried turning the brightness up? not had any problems with the brightness of my screen. even at 10% the thing is quite readable.
I tried that, it didn't make a difference. I think it's a hardware problem since I did a factory reboot (took me 10 mins just to tap the right buttons) and still has the same problem. Ordered a replacement
Did you try checking, saving, and unchecking auto? Mine is set to the "darkest" but it's still very bright
I didn't tbh, it was too difficult to find the checkbox for it. Without my N1 camera flash, it looked like the screen was off, and even with flash, I was basically fumbling around and hoping I would hit the right option.
I tried a factory reboot and that didn't fix it. The first time I booted, it was fine, so I reckon hardware issue. I've ordered a replacement, hopefully this'll last longer than 5 minutes

[Q] Weird screen defect - Screen blank after boot

Hi all,
I got my Nexus 7 from the Play Store a couple of months ago (one of the pre-orderers). The first time I turned it on, I noticed the screen slowly dimming and turning off during the boot animation. I would see the 'X' but it would slowly fade out, disappear totally and then reappear on full brightness. The screen then totally turned off after completing booting and I couldn't see anything. A couple of reboots later and the screen finally turned on which was great. The tablet would run anything perfectly after that except if I turned the brightness to the lowest setting which would cause the screen to turn off. This didn't bother me either since I always use it on full brightness anyway.
However, over the last couple of weeks I noticed the touchscreen becomes unresponsive after prolonged use. This made me decide to get it replaced. I called Google who said they would send me a replacement :victory:.
Here's the problem...Since I was rooted and running CWM recovery I decided to revert to the factory image for warranty purposes. So I reverted to stock and rebooted but I now have the same problem I had at the first boot. My screen won't turn on! I tried rebooting a couple of times to see if that would do it but it just happens everytime. The bootanimation completes and the screen just turns off. The problem is I can't relock my bootloader which is going to jeopardise my warranty IMO since my tablet is scheduled for return on the 12th of this month (10/12/2012).
Well finally could anyone please help? Has anyone had the same issue? What steps did you take?
Sorry for the long post. I'm just worried that I'm going to be stuck with the defective tablet which I worked hard to save the money for in the first place
BUMP. I really need any help I can get since i've got less than 48 hours to get it fully stock before the courier comes to pick it up for RMA.
Did you follow this guide to return to stock/relock the bootloader? I had this exact same problem and your best bet would be to get an RMA.
Actually I did perform all those steps but I just can't seem to enter the stock recovery. I just keep getting the Android with the red triangle. Thanks for the suggestion anyways. I'll give you a thanks just for that

Sounds to me as if your auto brightness is stuck....wake it up and shine a flashlight or something on the screen. If you can see your screen, go into settings and turn off your auto brightness.
Well I did what you said and guess what IT WORKED! Thanks a million. I'm really dumb for not having thought of that..

[Q] Screen Problem SGH-1337

So, just recently I had a problem with the phone when I tried turning on the screen but instead got small coloured pixels and the screen started glowing green. When I rebooted it rebooted normally but the screen stayed the same. It seemed like everything else but the screen display was working. Don't know if that makes sense to you guys. Has anyone else encountered this problem?
Only problem I encountered with S4 wqs straight out of the box after connecting to a genie to transfer data for a customer the screen on the S4 just went haywire and snowy like an old tube tv. Other than that haven't seen anymore screen issues.

That's exactly how the screen looked. Do you have any idea how it could occur?

Honestly didn't happen till it was connected to the Genie. Other than that I am clueless.
Tapped from the Shear Galaxy Near You!
Similar screen death problem
I have had an AT&T Galaxy S4 SGH-I337 for 2 weeks and love it. I was having a battery drain issue but powering off and back on seemed to fix it (also I am no longer ending the Google Play Music process from the Task Manager which may have caused the common "Media Server" battery drain I was having).
But today, I had a similar problem as the OP =(
Unlocked my phone (using the pattern to unlock) and it lagged as it tried to display the home screen. When the home screen showed up, the colors immediately went whacky, all white-washed and faded, then a half second later and the screen went black. Screen completely dead.
I can still hear sounds from the phones and see the status light so I know the rest of the phone is still working. It responds to me unlocking the phone and pressing the home, back, and settings button.
I will be taking my phone back to AT&T this evening but just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions or solutions. I will post an update after visiting AT&T.

Screen Flicker

Anyone else notice screen Flicker when the display is on the lowest brightness setting? I am noticing it on the bottom half of the screen usually when the phone first goes into the dim setting (manually or automatically). After it is in the dimmest setting for a while, it eventually stops. Or, if i manually move the setting off the lowest setting by even the smallest amount it stops. I've been running SACS Rom nearly since I got the phone, but the flicker started about 3 versions ago. I'm thinking it may be a hardware issue.

Anyone else having this problem? I have my phone set to stay on while charging in developer options. However, when the phone isn't touched for a little bit the screen dims and flickers like crazy. As soon as I touch the screen, it comes back to regular brightness and the flicker is gone. Any idea what the problem is and how to resolve it? I leave my phone in a dock all day on my desk and the flickering is driving me insane. I'm on the original GS4, not rooted, latest KitKat installed.
So the issue got progressively worse and I am approaching my warranty date so I contacted Samsung and they had me do a cache partition wipe. So far so good. I see the issue only so faintly and I don't think I wouldn't notice if I wasn't looking for it. I will see if the problem returns and if so, have the phone swapped out. I don't want to be stuck with a potential dud after the warranty expires.
I've never experienced this with a TW stock rom(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2650706) with NAE baseband.
