Nexus 7 Warm/yellow whites? - Nexus 7 (2013) General

Sorry if their is another thread available, but has anyone noticed that the nexus has yellow whites compared to another tablet and even my nexus 4.
Could this just be calibration related or hardware?

I haven't really. Might just be the calibration. If you want, exchange it for one that doesn't. Or, wait a few weeks/months for custom kernels to allow you to calibrate it yourself.

I noticed this myself when my screen appeared quite a few degrees warmer than that on my wife's iPad.
A kernel with colour temperature control will help you out if you're unlocked/rooted - Faux does some excellent kernels and he's actively producing kernels for Flo...
Otherwise, you can try the old exchange roulette...

Thanks yeah i figured it was just calibration. My nexus 4 was the same way until i rooted and flashed franco's kernel.
I dont like to rma or exchange especially since we are all early adopters and at asus quality control mercy. I will hold on to this one and wait for kernels.
No light bleed, no dead pixels, no static, no dust, no spontaneous combustion! id be a fool to return it.:angel::angel:

Compared to my S3 the whites are as white as can be, but I haven't compared it to an iPad yet.

picture of my screen on xda definitely warmer.

App for color calibration?

Hi!
im going to get the N10 in the next week and the first thing i will do because im a color junkie is a calibration test so se how close/far it is from
reference.
i have been into hardware calibration for displays for some years so i see myself as a pro.
i have X-Rite Display 3 Colorimeter and Chroma Pure calibration program.
http://www.chromapure.com/
the test patterns i use is from AVSHD709
http://www.avsforum.com/t/948496/avs-hd-709-blu-ray-mp4-calibration
i have already calibrated my LG Infinia LED TV to reference quality,so if only the right (ISF/CMS) settings is there i can calibrate any display to near reference quality.
but its all about the settings how much you can change.
so the question is:
is there a App that i can change the RGB values and saturation/hue also gamma settings?
or do i need to get a custom rom?
i know some custom roms for the SG2 has some screen/gamma adjustments in EX tweaks.
if its not i will still post the results from the calibration so you can check it out to see how good/bad calibrated the Nexus 10 is
Edit: i just found one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=745248
but i need this for the N10
Theres an app in the play store called Screen Adjuster that allows to change RGB, contrast, brightness but requires root. Been wanting to try it but I cant root my tablet as my pc wont recognize my tablet in fastboot.

Try not to use contrast if you don't need it. That's what's slowed my galaxy s3 down

Apps on the market only apply a filter on top of the screen. You're going to want a kernel with proper color calibration support to prevent performance loss.

thanks for the link
interesting
damn the Nexus 10 is WAY off in the Gamut Chart!
how the hell can they release a screen thats is so off?
surley needs some calibration there
fix a kernel with RGB adjustments and i will fix a calibration that is better than on the iPad4.
after that you can just copy the settings and BOOM you have a reference display.
(that is if the screens dont differ to much)
i have the tools and the Knowlegde to calibrate displays but zippo knowlegde in hacking kernels
so Kernel Experts
MAKE IT HAPPEND!
Edit: first thing you will start with is the grayscale
when the grayscale is right (whites is white and not blue) then automatic you have your 6500k color temp (6500kelvin is messured from daylight in california if someone wants to know)
Also the Gamut is adjusted in position.
so its easy
with a correct grayscale everything (almost) else becomes right on spot.
one setting that they dont test there is Gamma
gamma at 2.2 is important if you want to see all details in darker parts of movies or photos.
gamma is adjusted with all three sliders Red/Green/Blue locked
So what i need is RGB adjustments and Saturation/HUE adjustments if its possible
comon hackers
we must beat the iPad!
If you want to have ICC support in kernel you've to ask a kernel dev. But I don't think that someone will implement this feature. Because the majority of users doesn't know or care about correct colors.
As the test results of your linked page show the N10 reaches a "good" neutral in white, gray and black. But the contrast is very low and by calibrating and profiling it you'll reduce it more. You've to calibrate D65 at 120 - 140 cd and after this to write a correction profile especially for blue and violet tones.
Apple does such things because their customers want to have and need good colors. But I don't see a market for android users. Photoshop touch is crap and there is no other "real" graphics suite / app. Given gamut is okay for daily use, e.g. viewing movies and surfing around the web.
So, don't be disappointed if your wish to cailbrate and profile the N10 won't be possible at all. An google seems not to have plans for ICC support in android, see https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/android-developers/Ifnsdbkqxqo
The only thing that really seems off is that it has very washed out purples. Its fine other than that. It strange as it can display blue and red just fine.

Fortunately a lot of devs seems to think different seeing the amount of stuff they've coded that average Joe doesn't know or care about.
I for one would love to see the OP succeed as i see nothing wrong with getting better colour accuracy on my N10.
I personally really hope that a color calibration app/kernel becomes available.....devs PLEASE make it happen!! I like the punchy (albeit 'ficticious') colors of the amoLED display on my Galaxy Note....Please devs, give us the option to control/enhance the color of the Nexus 10's screen!
Another shout for some calibration tools on the nexus 10. All my main displays are calibrated & it's quite a shock to pick up my nexus 10 & the see the washed out colours
Indeed, the guy who mentioned the fact that the average Joe doesn't care about color reproduction is forgetting the fact that not a single one of us here is an average consumer, I also own an iPad 3 and I really loathe the washed out look on our display, the iPad looks very similar to the calibration I have on my Sony TV while the nexus looks almost like a color less gray when its put beside them, they all look like crap when you put them besides my SGS 2 though, all I really need to be completely happy with my Nexus would be a way to calibrate our screens, I have already pretty much given the iPad to my little sister but I hate to admit that the colors there look much much better than on the Nexus.
And by loathe I mean that I completely hate and despise it, such a great display ruined by the damn color calibration, the option should be built into Android for ****s sake.
PLEASE devs make it happen, color calibration seems to be an issue shared between all of the recent Nexus devices, for example, the screen on the Nexus 4 doesn't look as good as the one on the LG Optimus G (Or so I've read)
It's a shame Google are apathetic on this issue. Users that want do photo work are forced to go to Apple. Small OT aside: It's the same deal with audio creation apps/interfaces, Google doesn't care. I'd rather set my sites on Ubuntu.
Another vote for getting some kind of good calibration tool for the N10. I can put up with a lot, but the black levels are killing me. I would even put up with some loss of detail if I could get better black levels.
So... Guys, how can we contact Google to ask them to fix this themselves or do something so we can fix it ourselves?

Nah, the screen on the Nexus 4 doesn't look as good as the one in the Optimus G and the screen on the 7 is kind of washed out from what I've read, and from past experience I've seen that Samsung tends to calibrate their screens pretty nice, (albeit a bit saturated) on factory settings across all devices.
Hope someone can sort out the black levels, watching movies the blacks look grey specially with Dark Knight! Tried all sorts of things but nowt helping!

It's a shame for Google not calibrating any of their screens. Nexus 4 has those ugly washed colors, same with the nexus 10. And black levels, despite as many synthetic tests you will post (anandtech etc) are quite bad.
I'm so sure this is software... and 0 upgrades from Google. Its ok they will push next version of android as soon as avaliable, but nothing else, no OTAs for bug fixing. Any other brand would have already pushed several upgrades to new devices, bugs appear and samsung, htc etc gives you solutions (not always, but...)

Just moved over from an S3 - Some help needed please

Hey guys, I've just moved over from an S3 and have some questions. Any help is appreciated.
1. With a higher PPI, I assumed the screen would be more clearer. The colors are washed and the picture quality is not as good as the S3. What is better is text. It seems sharper, but pictures looked washed and not as good as the S3. I've noticed a thread with changing the RGB values, and have tried to the app to change the values, but I it is still not as good as the S3. Can anything be done to resolve this?
2. Wireless Charging - i want to be able to do this, but I have seen the Nokia chargers are a little hit and miss. Which ones work 100%?
3. High battery drain. Which is the best kernel to use with AOKP?
Many thanks for your help guys
1. Use faux kernel with faux app
2. qi chargers other than nokia
3. faux kernel and his app + his values
4. use q and a thread
Once you've used nexus for a while, the s3 screen will look cartoon and awful seriously. Put a really good HD colourful background pic on homescren and use phone for a few weeks and you'll never ever go back to amoled screens unless you really really love cartoons lol.
As for battery drain, this will improve but faux kernels are excellent

To be honest, I m in the same situation as you.
The screen, I think we ll get used to it, my wife still got her S3, and it is not natural in another way . But agreed that the screen is "pale".
The worst is the battery, as soon as the screen is used, the drain is just so huge....
BUT
The SGS3 is no new phone, remember, so I m sure the N4 will get better in the battery front.
The possibilities of developpement fun will make up for it, because after all, that s why we are here on XDA, right?

I was happier when I had my S3, as there was plenty of development
but since I upgraded to the S3 LTE, the development was limited and I got frustrated. Also my S3 LTE kept dropping reception and it was getting really annoying so I got rid of it
The AMOLED screen on the S3 is seriously a joke. Colors are over saturated and as someone else already said, it looks cartoonish.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
I can see the appeal in the AMOLED screens Samsung uses. They do produce some vibrant colors. Comparing my old Captivate (SGS1) to my Nexus 4 is even a pretty stark difference. Honestly, though, I have come to prefer the less saturated look on the N4.
I came from the S3, the only things I really miss are the camera and the battery.
The camera is amazing on the S3, the pictures were always much sharper than the pictures taken with the N4, the N4 does take VERY nice pictures with ample light.
The battery on the S3 seemed to be a lot better, and drain much slower...I'm REALLY hoping that this gets fixed with 4.2.2....
After using the N4 since its initial release looking at the S3 screen is...bad (IMO), I LOVED the S3, but the screen on the N4 is a lot brighter, clearer and seems to have more natural colors.
For kernel, I recommend the latest faux beta kernel, has amazing battery life for me and has also been relatively stable. It has one issue for me, sometimes the phone just doesn't wake up after I turned off the screen, but that's only in rare cases and really no big deal.
You should also use the faux app from the Play Store, it's a bit expensive imo but it's worth it since you can do all kinds of stuff with it from undervolting to setting the screen calibration.
Speaking of screen calibration: The stock one is really not that goot, especially the whites and overall colours on lower brightness looked a bit weird to me sometimes. But I changed the calibration a bit and it looks awesome and just "true" (again, to me personally). I'll post my calibration here, maybe you can try it. I took it from a spreadsheet where it said it would be calibrated just like a MacBook Pro screen which is supposed to be perfectly calibrated:
Red 255, Green 255, Blue 255. Gamma Amp0: Red 19, Green 21, Blue 24. Gamma Amp1: Red 1, Green 2, Blue 3.
I hope it helps.
Like some previous comments stated, the amoled screens are OVER saturated to the max.
As far as the battery life, I would look into juicedefender. Works great for me.
My Note 2's screen looks much more similar to my Nexus 4's screen when screen mode is set to "Natural." Does the S3 have a similar setting to make the AMOLED vibrancy less jarring?

As for battery, wait 'til the honeymoon is over. It lasts plenty. Unless you have NOW enabled.
I'm considering buying a Nexus 4 now that it's back in stock and I can afford it. I've no need for the phone at all but just really like everything about it. Currently using an S3 also... anyone who owned both care to share opinions?
I've been a GS3 user from release date. I was on AOKP for the longest that I wanted to try the real deal. I just got my Nexus 4 two days ago and I love everything about it except the camera. GS3 camera wins hand down. The screen on the Nexus 4 is amazing and you won't want to look at your Samsung anymore.

The phones are equally good in my opinion. If you like touch wiz, stay with the s3. If you like stock android, want more Dev support, and don't want to put up with Samsung's slow updates then go with the nexus. I personally prefer my nexus because I want the updates from Google and not the OEM's, and I'm a flashaholic.

Well the Nexus 4 is a lot faster and the screen doesn't look so weird like the S3. The N4 feels a little different in the hand - much better build quality on the N4 but the tapered edges of the S3 are a little nicer on the hand. You will definitely like the N4, it feels like quality kit in your hand and performance is excellent.

I got my N4 2 days ago. Before that I owned an S3. When I first looked at the N4's screen, it was very strange, it seemed pale to me, and I missed the accurate blacks from Amoled. But after one day I got used to it, and began to like it more and more. It's very sharp, and clean. The build quality is much better, and more solid than the S3.Imo it is beautiful with its minimal design.
The peformance is better, not a single app redraw or anything... Battery... For me it lasts from morning 7 till I arrive at home at 7 pm, and still has some energy in it (approx. 20%). On the way to work I listen to music and read forums for 1 hour, and I repeat this on the way home too. During the work, I send a few emails, some facebook, and every service is on. I don't think it would be so bad... Day by day I like my N4 more and more.

I had some questions about the nexus 10 I ordered mine from play store shouls be getting here soon after I readed all these problems im ready thinking its gonna be bad like some people say . How do getting replacements work . Do they send me one first then I send messed up one back . After the 15 day return period could you still get replacements if like the screen leeks bad . ???????

If you let Google put the cost of a new Nexus 10 on hold then they will send you a Nexus 10 while you still have yours. The money will be released when they receive your old Nexus 10.
Replacements are done through Google first, and after the return/replacement period then warranty for hardware defects is through Samsung. The Nexus 10 comes with a 1 year warranty, but a couple people have had problems with Samsung trying to say the warranty is only 90 days. The booklet clearly says 1 year though, and I think it says 1 year in the Play store when you buy the tablet so Samsung will have to honor that. If there are too many problems try and get Google involved with Samsung not upholding warranty on Google's tablets.
And it is really just 15% of people making a large stink about problems, many people are perfectly fine and happy with the tablet. Of those 15%, probably 5% will simply never be happy and just want to cause problems.
When you get your tablet be sure to set your background to solid black and delete all icons on the homescreen. Turn the brightness up half way and look for backlight bleed. if you have some, then you should consider returning the tablet for a new one, especially is the bleed has a yellow color to it rather than white. You can turn the backlight up higher to check with more brightness, but if you dont notice it at 50% then you probably wont ever notice any issues with the screen during any use.

Yes I love mine. It is extremely smooth with custom ROMs and kernels. We have lots of great options from developers, battery life is exceptional, and the screen looks amazing watching an HD movie or TV show. I suppose if I had ever had problems with the tablet then I may feel differently, but I have yet to have any issues whatsoever. My one regret is that I did not purchase a 32GB version. If I could go back I would have waited another week to buy and paid the extra $100 for double storage space. I have a lot of games installed and my tablet is 90% full on space at all times and I wish I could install more.
I also have the note 10.1 which one you think is better .

When do you notice the light bleeding?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
My tablet does not show any hint of light bleed until it reaches 80% or more brightness on a completely black background. Which is pretty good since LCD screens just inherently have light bleed because of how the backlight is designed for the tech. I have never even gone above 30% brightness while in doors, and outside at 100% it would be impossible to see any backlight bleeding anyway.
Once your tablet arrives I highly suggest the KTManta kernel. It has lots of fun options and the only kernel with a bit of color fix.

I love my N10. But this is my second one, I had to RMA my first one. I was pretty vocal about the problems I was having, because of this:
+Its true that there is a lot of problem threads about this device. Partially this is from Android 4.2.1 not playing well with the N10, partially its because there are some defective N10 devices out there. I know because I had one! When you, the end user, has a general problem and then you go online to try and see if there is a fix, you find these threads, and everyone chimes in together it starts to get intense. Some of the people, as another user said, may never actually be satisfied. But others are reporting real problems, trying to find a fix. Im a lot more OCD than most people I meet, so I just assumed that was what was going on. I assumed I was just being picky, and that others were just being okay with it. But now, after using a different N10, I can say there was a guaranteed problem with my first unit.
So, just like the people that say "bad" need to be taken with a grain of salt, so do the people that say "good". I can say this: there are both good and bad N10s out there, and one thing EVERY new N10 owner needs to do is QUICKLY determine if you have a good or a bad one so that you can remedy the situation ASAP if you have a bad one.

There's two things I'm not a big fan of on the Nexus 10:
- Thermal throttling (this shouldn't even be an issue under normal circumstances, but the situation is far better than it was around launch)
- Available memory (we only have access to 1.2GB of RAM, not anywhere near the advertised 2GB)

Nope. I rooted it as soon as I got my hands on it. My fave: Rasbeanjelly + Trinity..
Edit: Thermal throttling is a common problem across all Nexus devices. But I don't consider it a big problem because I'm underclocked.

Colour Calibration on newest batch?

Hey everyone,
Long time follower but first poster on this particular forum, am on the cusp of ordering a nexus 4 but slightly concerned about some reports concerning the colour calibration/washed out status of the screen. Just wandering if anyone here who has purchased/seen a RECENTLY bought nexus 4 and can report on whether this issue has been fixed/improved at all?
It's the only thing that stopping me from purchasing as I'm used to the saturation and 'pop' of my 4s and don't want to trade down so to speak.I have a nexus 7 and the colours are very washed out so I'm hoping it's at least better than that. I know of course about the display control app etc but I don't really want to root to be honest.
Thoughts?

You don't realise the screen is washed out until you either compare it with another phone or calibrate the screen and see the true potential of the display
@OP, some people said that things got better with the 4.2.2 update but if I were you I would definitely root and install a calibrated kernel.

To be honest the screen was completely unacceptable to me when I bought the phone. Rooting and installing kernels with color/gamma control definitely changed my mind. I know you don't want to root, but the phone is awesome in every other aspect. Of highly recommend buying it and installing a custom kernel as well.

If you're coming from the 4S, or Galaxy phone with an AMOLED screen, and especially if you can't stand the Nexus 7 screen.. you will not appreciate the Nexus 4 display.
However, if you are not opposed to rooting and tweaking the display then you're good to go.

Hey everyone,
Long time follower but first poster on this particular forum, am on the cusp of ordering a nexus 4 but slightly concerned about some reports concerning the colour calibration/washed out status of the screen. Just wandering if anyone here who has purchased/seen a RECENTLY bought nexus 4 and can report on whether this issue has been fixed/improved at all?

seriously bro buy it
the screen is superb even in low brightness setting and it looks beautiful
trust me you wont regret buying it
Ok thanks guys - will have an extended test in store tomorrow and come to a conclusion. Still uneasy but all this custom kernal stuff as it's a bit above my intellectual pay grade but I love the look of the nexus so maybe I'll force myself to start learning/experimenting outside the comfort zone so to speak.
Thanks again

Color Saturation & Accuracy.

Excuse my ignorance, but how great of a screen is the N7 supposed to be in comparison to some of the higher end smartphones out there in terms of color reproduction and saturation?
I have the HTC One, and side by side comparisons of the same image makes the N7 look washed out and bland.

That remains to be seen until LaptopMag or Displaymate or someone with the tools can accurately measure it, but reviews so far point out that both brightness and colors are very good on the device.
Be cool if ISF calibration could be implemented into tablets & phones.

Didnt the N4 have some color correction tuneable built into the kernel? Since the N7 mk2 is on a similar SOC, I was hoping for the same.

The N4 color out of the box was terrible. Not to long after launch a few devs implemented a much better solution baked into their kernels. I would expect the same here. The N4 gamma and color is brilliant now

It's pretty good on par with iPad 4 according to Anandtech and Apple is known for having good calibration. But then again, just a matter of time when we can calibrate it ourselve like the Nexus 4.

I agree with you completely. I have an HTC One X and immediately thought the 2013 N7 looked pale in comparison. Hopefully there's some resolution in the future.
I have a Note 8 and a Nexus 7.
On colors with green elements displayed on the Nexus 7, the entire photo takes on a distinct greenish hue. The black level on the N7 is not very dark, either.
I set up both tablets on the floor, mounted a camera on a tripod over them and took photos.
Attached are some detail shots of flowers and our dog showing the green wash and the bright blacks. I certainly hope that this is something which can be addressed in software.

I would definitely want to look at the N7 side by side with something else at the shop before buying one, or else be ready to return it if you have trouble with the color accuracy once you get one home.
Not everyone will care, of course.
But what I've seen in reviews is that brightness is good but color is not very accurate, not that both are good.
roustabout,
thank you for that.
that proves my point from other threads, the N7 screen is not properly calibrated yet again.
Overall, it seems pretty good to me. I compared it to my Spyder calibrated IPS monitor and the colors were fairly close.

They managed to bake it because LG left some display colors related things in the kernel. That said I would like to see if asus made the same thing for this device. (hopefully)
The view angles and color are excellent on it. Much better than the first nexus 7 and a million times better than the nexus 4.

That's what I've found: it looks a lot better than my Nexus 7 2012. I think it gets slammed a lot for being "bland" since most of the smartphones like to oversaturate their displays (I'm looking at you, Samsung). I have a really good IPS monitor for my computer, and it seems to fit in quite well with it, and it makes my Galaxy S4 screen look like a colorful kid's toy.

Asus provides a screen calibration in the setting on the Asus Padfone 2 & Infinity (Stock). So its likely possible.

Pretty sure the issue with the first generation nexus 7 was that nvidia didn't provide a way to set these things. Qualcomm I believe does so the odds are pretty good. I personally like the stock calibration though. The first time I think its been good on a nexus device. The panel itself is much better than the nexus 10 and nexus 4 as well. Much wider view angles.

Ok well I just hope it was some fail from nvidia's part over here. I just imagine what would be the colors because it seems when I listen to this, it's like a new display has been made. XD
