Another question about the Xperia X1a,
Is there a built in data counter? My old Nokia had one and tells me how much data I've used so far and I've looked everywhere maybe there isnt one?
Not sure if there is one, but I use SPB GPRS Monitor, which is really good. Try that if you need one to be intact with your data plan.
Where does one get such an application? Free?

Download the trial and if you want it for free, use your imagination and hit the search button!
I've searched but to no avail, if someone can be nice enough to point me to the right direction it wouldbe much appreciated.
requesting commercial apps for free is not allowed in this forum plz stop....
buy it or request elsewhere in forums for such things
i bought it and i think it's very useful if you don't have an unlimited data plan. better safe than sorry.
Ok I gave up and purchased the program, seems pretty good. Watching HD youtube videos equates to about 5MB per min. Thank god I have 6GB/mth to use.
Ok I bought this SPB Wireless Monitor and have set a custom data tariff. Now I'm wondering if they make a minute counter too but I'm billed by the second and not rounded off to the minute. I'm willing to buy another program that will track my 200 mins that I have per month from 8am-5pm mon-fri but not counting evenings from 5pm and week-ends. Is there such a program?
Ive posted this tread 2 let people know that with T-Mobiles new 3g upgrade for all of their radios the data is enough 2 play cod4 and cod6 on any desktop or lappy.. its about 15-200kbps per second down needed and 3-80kbps up 2 get smooth playin.. and the ping should be under 200 (i get around 150)works best in 3g and should get 3 out of 4 bars in wireless strength, bty.... edge is unplayable ... SO if you got an android phone with tether usb or wireless ur in the game see you there...... ((GSH))*GOONZ look for me...
SPEEDTEST -
DOWN MAX -848 kbps
UP MAX- 369 kbps
PING AVRG - 150ish
wrong section and not exactly a great idea anyway - good luck explaining the data usage to TMO when you go way over and they ask why
Using Wi-Fi tether and the wireless G adapter for xbox 360 I have been able to play COD4 with no lag over my T-Mobile 3G connection which in Portland OR is about 1800 kbps down to 350 kbps up. Not sure where this falls under development but I agree it is cool being able to use my G1 for something so advanced.

unlimited data plan.... hhmm it is going to be a little hard to go over the limit on this one
It may be the wrong section but ive been doing this since mod6 came out , when iam done playin which most of the time is about 4-5 hours a day through the phone its about 400-500mb and thats nothing.. you use max down and up when browsing ... this is not an idea pal.. people can do this.... just make sure u got unlimited data plan. iam here 2 let them know..peace chicken grease.

While yes it is unlimited, they cap you at about (5?)gb- after that say hello to edge. I'm also pretty sure that if you go look in the contract there's probably something like "If you use an unusual amount of data, then we are able to charge you $xx for xxgb"

While there's no clause specifying charges, there is wording stating that they have the right to either throttle you back or disabling your data plan if they believe your use is "detrimental to their network". Yeah...no such thing as "unlimited"
ive posted this in dev cuz i use the the build.trout hack on system/, set hsxpa to 2 and gprsclass to 12 and get no lag... default is 1 & 10.. this allows higher up speeds ,which is what u want. some feed back on what others are using would be nice
and ping of 150ish? that unplayable for.....40 is high for me
10gb max????? dudes thats b.s , i download movies ,games off pretome.net and go passed 10gb in a work week.. bty idk if this helps but iam on that prepaid no contract **** so idk, i opened this up 2 let em know, not get ***** at k? happy gaming
i believe they cut your speed when you go over 1gb and cut your data at 2 or 3
unlimited has NEVER meant unlimited in internet terms
they quote fair usage when you try to give em hell about it
and they can pull the plug if data exceeds an amount they see plausible for a mobile phone following the TnCs
both TMO UK and US work the same way - even putting that you cant use IM over data in there (so you use their sms based IM clients)
read your contract, they have you by the nuts
Not true. I have called and checked with tmobile and there isn't any cap with the unlimited data plan. The only way you would get charge more is if you go outside of the US and use data.
yeap you guys are right. Quote from T-mobile terms and conditions:
1. Permissible and Prohibited Uses
Your Data Plan is intended for Web browsing, messaging, and similar activities on your device and not on any other equipment. Unless explicitly permitted by your Data Plan, other uses, including for example, tethering your device to a personal computer or other hardware, are not permitted.

hmm...prepay and they dont screw you for it...il keep that in mind
the ping is kinda high and lower is always better yes but please note that the data does not get over used in 1 hour i used 24mb down and 7mb up...... so around 30 mb for 1 hour ...you do the math.. wireless tether tells you how much youve used... ive been doing this for about a year now...i just figured a few monthes ago it was enough 2 play ..thats all people
I just called tmobile and there is a 10gb cap... I am on the no contract unlimited plan

Hello all, im new to this forum. I just got the android system working on my phone and am very excited about it.
However, I don't know much about how it accesses data.
this is a very amateur question I know, but just so im not surprised at the sight of my monthly bill this month; does the android system access internet the way it normally does when I had the windows mobile O/S? or does it count as tethering?
(Reason I ask is because with bell mobility, the HTC Touch has an unlimited internet package, but get charged heavily if the data is tethered)
Again sorry for the amateur question any information on the subject would be greatly appreciated.
Yup. Same as WinMo. I've been running Android off and on for about a year and haven't seen anything on new on my bill. I do have the unlimited browser option $7, and so far so good.
same here. I've been working on Android development for a long time now, and it has never affected my bill.
Thank you for the quick response guys
yep, never got charged extra, can't beat it
Anyone know how this actually works? I tethered using both winmo and android over the xmas holidays and according to my laptop, I was probably transferring around 500MB of data over the course of a week, yet when I received my bill, they had my packet data total at 13 MB.
With mobile browser on bell they cap data sessions at 5KB or something like that, I can't remember the exact number. Thus, it doesn't count actual megabytes.
Don't worry!
Hey peeps,
Got some money to burn before the end of my tax year and have been keeping my eye on the phone market recently (boy has it been eventful with the passing of the MWC), and have decided i want a Nexus One.
Can i just get a few questions clear so i know it's defiantly the right choice (as i keep thinking i should wait for the *cough* iphone *cough* 4 *cough*):
1) Will the N1 get updates to Android first over other Android phones like the milestone and the Desire?
2) Will there be any issues with updates as i will be buying from the US for me in the UK?
3) If i have a problem with my N1 where do i go to get it fixed in the UK?
4) Is the N1 'always on'? (need to decide what data package to go for)
5) If i root the N1 will this cause problems with Android updates?
6) If i put the HTC Sense on the N1 will this cause problems with Android updates?
I can't think of any other major questions, but i am sure i will ask if i do
Paul
1) It will be faster than the milestone, but for the Desire we don't know yet. Anyway, it's not like features like this won't be ported the next day by the devs here
2) No problem.
3) Dunno, sorry
4) Well it can connected only on demand, but it's not how android is supposed to be used I guess.
5) Not so far, and at worse you'll have to wait (not long) for unofficial updates
6) You'll have to use the updates found here. The OS won't be 100% identical to the Desire, so no official updates will work. Applications updates from the market work us usual though.
Thanks Blimblim
with regards to No.4, i asked cus someone told me that the iphone is always on, so if it hasn't found a wifi network to connect to it uses GPRS or 3G which could get costly if i'm out and about
With No.6 I think i might leave it as stock if it may cause problems/inconveniences. (but i might change my mind when i get it )
3) It'll go to HTC UK who are based in Milton Keynes.
4) You can turn data on and off as you please with the 'Toggle Data' widget.
sir.chunk said:
1) Will the N1 get updates to Android first over other Android phones like the milestone and the Desire? More than likely, as the updates will come straight from Google
2) Will there be any issues with updates as i will be buying from the US for me in the UK? No
3) If i have a problem with my N1 where do i go to get it fixed in the UK? Phone gets sent off to HTC in Milton Keynes
4) Is the N1 'always on'? (need to decide what data package to go for) Yes, although you can disable mobile data with APNDroid, which was fine for me till I sorted a dataplan
5) If i root the N1 will this cause problems with Android updates? Only if you load a custom ROM
6) If i put the HTC Sense on the N1 will this cause problems with Android updates? Yes, as it's a custom ROM, not that the devs wont include the updates themselves though.

I'm from uk and have an N1
1) Update was prompted to me the moment the wizard setup up wifi (by establishing my google accounts) upon startup
2) None so far. Be aware navigation will only work at present if you root your phone (iphone equivalent of jailbreaking). Google are working on a european version, i chose to wait. And then there is an intermittent sync error with Picasa web albums directly onto the phone, though you can still access the web version in your browser in seconds [EDIT - this will be resolved by updates according to Google forums]
3) A problem with software would be to contact Google. Hardware would require HTC's uk based team.
4) You can chose to not have data roaming, chose to not update any widgets should you wish. For your information i'm on O2 simplicity at £20 a month, 800 minutes, 1600 texts and unlimited internet and have had no problems. Advice if you'r unsure would be to buy the paid version of the Taskiller app, it can be selected to automatically close background apps and therefore stop unnecessary data.
5) Not rooted mine. Chose not to do mine as i'm new to Android it's still much more customizable than iphone and Winmo so i'm a happy user with current abilities. I will pursue rooting if Google do not update a sat nav app for uk in the next few months. There are plenty of youtube videos around to show you how with forum advice.
6) Again, there are plenty of youtube videos with the 2.1 Desire new Rom working on the N1 successfully. No visual performance issues fromt he ones i've seen and everything looks as it should.
Hope i've been of some help.
Regards
Scott
oooooo, this is all very exciting! Thanks everyone for the info.
Didn't know HTC had a centre in MK - WINNER!
I think i will leave putting HTC sense on for now. I did it with the X1 and liked it, but that's only cus what SE had to being with was about as much use as a chocolate tea pot! lol
Out of interest, what data plan have you gone for with vodafone UK?
I see they are now offering on their sim only plans a 1gb data plan.

Really? Mine was £59 Did you get a UK charger with yours?
Also, to the OP, you really should get an unlimited data plan. They are pretty standard now, even on PAYG, and you are not gonna get anywhere near as much out of the phone without one.

Have they stiffed you for duty by any chance? That should be zero.

If DHL try to shaft you for the duty charge, phone them up and demand it taken off your bill. UK customs state that mobile phones and PDAs have 0% duty fee. They put a 5% duty on mine, so I called them up. The lines are always busy, but as soon as I got through it was only a 2 mins affair. They have to recalculate the VAT and other charges so they'll send you a new updated bill in about a week or so.
Hey guys, what was the total cost in £'s if you don't mind me asking (phone, Duty?, VAT)?
Also, would you think when Vodafone release it in the UK, will it be different to the one from Google direct?
@3Shirts - Vodafone don't do unlimited data, just 500mb or 1Gb
guys dont forget quidco as well £100 for a symplicity o2 tarrif and £100 for vf one as well

Thanks for the info. I've been considering the N1 replaced for my HD2, really want to try android. How long did it take for the N1 to be in your hand after despatch?
Ordered at 17:15 on Tues day evening, retried order at 17:45 due to HSBC fraud prevention.
Phone in hand about 13:30 on the Friday.
I heard if you buy an Android phone through a third party reseller you only get 1GB throttled internet instead of 3GB. But I read you can make a call to convince them to change it.
Anyone ever done this and got any tips?
From what I heard they put you on the unlimited internet booster, which is only 1GB, and not web and walk plus (3GB) if you order through a reseller.
Well, I ordered it from E2 save.
I can't link or post images yet: i.imgur.com/Ku7aX.png
Notice they give you the option to add "Unlimited Web Booster" for £5 a month? Could I use that to convince them?
Thanks.
edit: It also says unlimited on their site: e2save.com/mobile-phone/contract/samsung/Samsung-Galaxy-S.html?tariffcode=D25TEAPR09

I heard saying people on the forums managed to get upgraded for free works. Guess it makes the employee think his friends are letting them have it so he should too.
When I signed up for Sim only £15 month plan they put me on web + walk plus automatically, even though phone was from another seller. Didn't believe it at first, but sure enough it showed up there on my bill. Tbh, I think the girl I spoke to got confused - I've not queried it since!
I got mine upgraded, but then again I was already a customer before they changed the wording on the fup back in July 2010.
However, they didn't want to upgrade me at first, and the best tactic I found may well work for you too:
Basically, you have to complain bitterly that the internet access is extremely slow and laggy, and that you have tested it and it seems that even tho your phone shows you have a hsdpa connection, you are only getting 3G speeds (~350kpbs) at best and it seems you are being throttled.
Then tell them that you have read all their t&c's and there is no mention AT ALL that the 1GB FUP is throttled, so therefore they need to rectify this situation, as the hsdpa device you got with your contract is being crippled without good reason - tell them that you accept that there is a 1GB FUP, but you feel you should be allowed to download that 1GB as quickly as your device is capable of.
Keep pushing and escalate to their line manager if necessary. Worked for me and at least one other person.

I'm on unlimited internet booster, but get HSDPA speeds - 1900kbps down, 530kbps up...
For my first month (Jul-Aug) I was on web'n'walk because of a ****-up, then back to normal 'internet booster'. Noticed no difference in quality of service.
And I only just about scrape the 1GB limit. But then I've got wi-fi at home. Mind you, now I've got 2.2 on my phone and Flash 10.1, who knows
I bought from a reseller as well.
Oh yeah when you people managed to upgrade to 3GB, did you get to choose another booster as well?
How do you test your speed?
[email protected]
Send email explaining that you have slow hsdpa speeds and you have read on terms and conditions that every android should have 3gb fup.
Give them your phone number to contact you (say that you would like to speak with them) in 24hrs they should call you back with everything on as it should be.
In response to post above. No I didn't get the booster but I'll probably ask for it in few weeks.
Pointing that I've read on internet that people when ordering this offer could have a booster as well with 3gb fup

On tmobile you will get max 2mbit up and 600kbit down (confirmed with tmobile tech support).
I think o2 has got the fastest one and that is 7 mbit.
However, I also use giffgaff, its pay and go, or something like simplicity on o2 where you have to top up every month and quit any time.
The give you 4 mbit down and 2 mbit up and really unlimited broadband with no fup.
All that is because there isn't any customer service and everything you bed sorting out you do on forums....

Thanks everyone it worked. Got my texts too.
As i work for T-Mobile i should not say this but if you go into your local store and tell them you are getting a message saying you are at 80% of your download limit and you should be getting 3GB so why do you get this message? they should look at your account and see no wnw+ soc and just add it as they cant see where you got it.
