My new tablet vs. Xperia Play - Xperia Play General

I recently picked up a Coby 7 inch 7065-8 tablet which has a dual core am8726-mx processor running at 1.2 ghz, a gig of ram, and dual mali-400 gpu. Given what I know about the hardware and benchmark results it would seem that the tablet should blow the Play out of the water when it comes to gaming (don't get me wrong, I'm still a Play fan all the way but I thought my son would like watching me play on a bigger screen since I'm trying to get him interested in gaming) but it does not. In every game I have tested it is slower and emulation is slower as well. I know a lot of things are not optimized to support dual core but I still can't figure out why things would actually be slower. Any help would be appreciated.

what is the android version of that tablet?

My cousin has a coby tablet 7 inches but it has jelly bean and it sucks no offence but its very badly made and very badly optimized like u said. If u can return it then u should. A samsung galaxy tab 2 7inch is only 149 $ and much better. Also nexus 7 for a liitle more is also a lot better. I recommend you go with those
Sent from my LG-P970g

That's a shame; I was under the impression that the majority of the optimizations came from the android operating system especially since the hardware is very mainstream. If anyone has had any luck with making the 7065 work worth a damn let me know, I believe I'm out of the return window sadly.

I've read everywhere that the Coby tablets just suck in general. And if you're trying to get your son into gaming (awesome parenting btw ), I'd recommend getting one of these. Just search for reviews, most of them are pretty nice overall.

I picked up a original Galaxy Tab 10.1 GT=P7510 for $160 from 1saleaday.com last Oct. It was used but in excellent condition. I know its old specs, Tegra 2 I OC mine to 1.4 but it does a great job and I am very happy with it. I have seen them for about $135 online if you look.
But I must admit this particular JinXing device looks nice spec wise:

Sorry to hear about the Coby, a friend of mine did have that same tablet and he returned it do to poor performance.
Here is a review on that JXD 7800b:
http://www.geeky-gadgets.com/jxd-s7...ld-games-console-launches-for-160-05-08-2013/
JXD 7800b on preorder for $170 free shipping.. thats an awesome price for what you get... I would be seriously inclined to snag it... of course I will wait for it to come out and go through the reviews, plus see if it gets any DEV love...

Thanks for the advice everyone
I'm going to try Drastic on both devices side by side since it is actually supposed to be optimized for dual core and the bigger screen will be a benefit but if performance sucks on it then I'm finding a way to get rid of this terrible little device. Oh, and just for laughs, it has a 2 hour and 45 minute battery life!

But on the subject....I could live with this phone.
Make sure its HSPA+ compatable though !
According to tmonews, it only supports up to 7.2/5.76 HSPA (not plus, sorry).

looks like you missed the main topic of this thread... there's a new Nexus S in the works with a newer cpu.. supposedly the dual core Orion from samsung. You are still talking about the old specs on the single core CPU. Maybe the change to Orion the radios will change also.
And maybe also the Nexus S will be able to transform into a transmitting device that can place cellular connections with other people that are scattered throughout the United States of America for the provider cost that is paid monthly and also be able to look up various information on the world wide web and display a H on the top of the taskbar which people will still assume is stock on all phones!!!!
I agree the specs of the original Nexus S made me really sad. The original Nexus set the standards for the year to come. Phones are still coming out with the same specs as the N1 even now! So I expect a Dual Core Processor with 32 gig internal running Tmo 4g 10mega pixel camera capable of 1080p 4'3 or bigger display ....have I left anything else out?....oh yeah Angry Birds comes standard

Nexus S - First Samsung Orion Smartphone?
http://www.infosyncworld.com/reviews/cell-phones/nexus-s/11523.html
By Sindre Lia, Friday 12 November 2010
The Nexus S is destined to become the first Samsung Orion smartphone, as in the first smartphone to make Hummingbird look old.
The Nexus One was a failure at all but one account: It brought new Android features to smartphone influencers and developers early throughout 2010. Having a star in your fleet of this kind is crucial, and nobody knows it better than Google. The days when you got straight answers from Google executives are long gone - they play ball like OS makers play ball now. We all get confused and then surprised. It's PR at its best and it makes smartphone influencers pay even more attention to what you're really up to.
The Nexus S by Samsung and Google will likely be the most powerful smartphone you've ever seen, as it'll likely be powered by the new Samsung Orion application processor. Its specs pretty much speaks for itself, and we guess the Nexus S will instantly be regarded as the new Android smartphone to be had amongst smartphone influencers and developers looking to get an early taste of new Android features throughout 2011 - and a lot should go wrong if they don't like it. Check out what the processor brings to the table here:
Designed using Samsung's 45 nanometer low-power process technology, Orion features a pair of 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 cores, each comes with a 32KB data cache and a 32KB instruction cache. Samsung also included a 1MB L2 cache to optimize CPU processing performance and provide fast context switching in a multi-tasking environment. In addition, the memory interface and bus architecture of Orion supports data intensive multimedia applications including full HD video playback and high speed 3D action games.
Samsung's new application processor incorporates a rich portfolio of advanced multimedia features implemented by hardware accelerators, such as video encoder/decoder that supports 30fps video playback and recording at 1080p full HD resolution. Using an enhanced graphics processing unit (GPU), the new processors are capable of delivering 5 times the 3D graphics performance over the previous processor generation from Samsung.
The Orion processor will let customers use different types of storage, including NAND flash, moviNAND, SSD or HDD providing both SATA, and eMMC interfaces. Customers can also choose their appropriate memory options including low power LPDDR2 or DDR3, which is commonly used for high performance. In addition, a GPS receiver baseband processor is embedded in the processor to seamlessly support location based services.
A mobile device using the Orion processor can simultaneously support two on-device display screens, while driving a third external display such as a TV or monitor, via an on-chip HDMI 1.3a interface.

Meh.
It isnt too exciting really. The things I want are a better physical design, improved build quality, vastly better battery life, at least iPhone 4 camera quality, proper multitouch, wireless inductive charging, 5ghz N wifi, HSPA+, higher resolution screen etc
Having a dual core processor doesnt do a thing for those issues (except the higher res screen, and even there a dual 1ghz processor is way overkill).
I thought i'd throw my 2cents is as a newb to the phone. I have probably wrestled with keeping it or selling it more than anyone these past two weeks of owning it. (in fact I actually advertised it with all accessories for sale, like stuff I bought thats on its way..but I've been having second thoughts).
Ok. For one, I was in awe of the Galaxy S, even though i hadn't seen one powered on in person. (Plus the girl I like mentioned it when we were talking about my "new phone" and asked if it was a Galaxy )
In all seriousness though, the discussions that got me leaning to the N1 noted:
- Form factor, form factor, form factor. Whether I like the specs or not, I have to like the bling (dare i say), or form factor in general. This phone just fits sweet in the pocket.
- In the other Nexus S thread, guys mentioned how they came back to their N1 after the Galaxy, and one chap mentioned how he's had his N1 for a year and it has no scratches without babying it. (I know from other HTC plastic phones that this can happen, and it does save you money in the long run by not wanting to buy "fresher" fones after 6 months, just based on the looks factor).
- Touchscreen. Yes it may not be as responsive as the Galaxy S, but I can live with it. And the more I think about it, I don't want to relearn how to flash and root a new device, and how to apply all the fixes. (i seriously spent a full week learning stuff for the N1 and thats a lot of investment).
And more applicably to the Nexus S. The first thing that struck me when I looked at it was it looked too bulgy. I gotta like the way my phone looks man and I gotta say after two weeks of owning this it is timeless and slim. AND i'm not just saying this, because I have a buyer already waiting ..who i've been procrastinating turning down. NEway, later for that ;P (I'll help him find a nice one on ebay tho)
one thing i realized without thinking about it too, is there is brand loyalty involved too. I never really realized this before until I saw you guys' sigs, and looked back. i have been an htc fan and never really noticed it. now I know why.
peace out, and have a good night.
PS: be careful when SMSing tonight! TGIFers! heh! Use your Winmo device like I do ;P and heed the SMS Random Selection fairy! ;P
Oh and whoever said the N1 is not good at gaming, might be right BUT i was highly impressed by quake3demo on the nexus one the other night, and really: im not much of a gamer (on my phones).
I play psx emu on there all the time. Its sweet!

Granted.
I would still wait, personally, for a nexus phone with the same form factor as this one. Too slim!
If it is really an orion cpu and can work on the same tzones/web2go plan then i would switch and give up the superior design of the nexus.
If it is licensed thru tmo, you will likely need a full data plan...
Afaik only the dev phones can pull this off as tmo has no record of the imei

[Q] still interesting to buy galaxy tab

Hello people
I am looking to buy a tablet, and I can not afford the newest one simply because they are too expensive.
I may be able to get the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" and I was wondering if it was still worth it.
Is it the screen very responsive? Is it fast? Is 2.3 that important and should I look for a newer one, or is this product still good in terms of browsing the web, documents, some games, music?
And between this and the Toshiba Folio, bearing in mind the Folio is much cheaper, which would you pick? (or do you have another suggestion? I live in France)
Thank you for your answers
i've never heard of the folio before. i just googled it, hands off!
I also have little money. that's why i first imported the nook color (250$ + 120€ (shipping & german tax & customs)), its a very good tablet, bit I had problems with the display and I wanted a tablet with more connectivity (3g, gps, camera etc.)
I've sold the nook and bought the sgt used for 295€ at ebay.de.
it actually was cheaper than importing the nook and I hope that I will be happy with it.
I dont recommend any cheap android tablets, they all have a big list of cons. the only cheap android tablet you can get is the nook, but its only cheap if you live in the us.
i dont have my sgt yet, but from what i hear and i read its seams to be the most capable and cheapest high quality tablet out there.
The folio is highly recommended not to get! trust me toshiba sucks in the mobile industry. it has many bugs reported just like my TG01. They even cancelled the product line up here in the UK. Personlly i find my tab slow + laggy. You need a dual core tablet to power the mighty screen. I would get the HTC Flyer if i were you.
Mine flys
Stock the tab is fast enough to get work done. I did the KhasMek Voodoo Plus v3 OC kernal mod and the tab flys now. I have a Xoom also and this kernal for the SGT made it faster than my Xoom. The screen is also very responsive. Personally I think this is a fantastic tablet it just works with no fuss. Although, if I keep messing with it, that may no longer be the case. Mine is running 2.2 and I have no desire to put 2.3 on it any time soon. Not that it means allot Quadrant is running between 2100 and 2300 for my SGT. My Xoom runs it 1800 to 1900.
Good luck in your search.

I just got my Sprint Tab a couple of days ago and I love it. I already had an iPad but wanted something different and more portable. Its plenty fast and responsive and just really seems to hit the sweet spot for me.
I replace my Archos 70 8GB with Galaxy Tab Wifi ($390.- at local shop in Bangkok). It is much better than my Archos which I think it was a great product.
The screen is very responsive and the LCD quality is excellent (PLS technology).
I don't find it laggy at all. Only negative area is it can't play HD video. (Galaxy Tab 3G use more powerful CPU/Chip). It's superb in other areas.
The tab is rock solid on Froyo! Yes the stock lags at times but till date it had yet to crash or freeze...with Roto JMIv2 the thing flies!
Am absolutely in love with it and if I had the money I would buy another one...the 7 inch size and Froyo is darn good....I don't understand at all what the people who complain about Froyo being not optimized for tablet are talking about...!!! All apps I have loaded till date works great! I watch movies anime and tv show on this...my netbook is lying in storage since I got this and when on personal travel I shove the tab into the camera bag with the kindle and off I go...
Pop in a sim card and I can surf the net anywhere...much better than surfing on a tiny screen on a mobile phone...
Am never going to consider anything above 7 inch and without being SIM enabled.

I've had mine GT for about a month and really enjoy it. Easier to haul around than a Netbook, or in Ipad or Xoom even.
I had a Nook, but didn't like it as the screen was of cheap quality(the whites had a yellow tint to it(tried another, it was the same). The whites on the GT are WHITE no doubt about it. Build quality is very solid on the GT.
However, if you are on a budget, nook is fairly solid with the proper software roms.
But the GT is very solid and even with the release of the WIFI version only soon, it will bring even more users in the fold.
There is a lot of people holding off for the "Next best thing" but, honestly, I'd rather be playing and using something now, instead of waiting 6 months or so to play with something that May or May not kick ass.
Dive right in, the GT water is fine.
;
I believe Galaxy Tab is now the best 7" tablet in the market (Archos 70 is the second, IMO); both spec/performance-wise and build quality. The price is also coming down to a more acceptable level.
I don't see any new 7" model coming out in the near future. If you are looking for a portable table, Galaxy Tab won't disappoint you.
I had my Tab for 2 months now and couldn't be happier with it. I do have the Overcome ROM and over clocked to 1.2GHz so its not stock (512Mb RAM is a bit limited as only 200Mb is usable).
I did have a Dell Strek 5" and an ipad, sold both since I got the Tab. To me the size makes it very versatile, I can fit it into most of my jackets and cary it all day without any discomfort.
Also the only other 7" tablet is the Dell Streak 7 which has shorter battery life and poor screen viewing angle, both are deal breaker for me. Plus I'd prefer a device with more RAM than dual core CPU.
The HTC Flyer is not out yet, and will cost almost twice what the Tab is selling.
P.S. ASDA Direct is selling the Tab for £299.
http://direct.asda.com/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab/000504480,default,pd.html
well thanks for the answers! you guys still seem excited about it. and OMG I saw the overcome 1.4 video, FREAKIN RESPONSIVE I was like "omg i need one now"
sadly the deal I found is not up anymore so I cant seem to find one cheap enough...unless I wanna pay for the next 6 months (the link someone posted here is out of stock)
SGT has had bad press and is severely underrated. I blame Samsung for positioning it at too high a price initially, and the tech press for comparing it directly with an iPad - which it is not. It's still the best small format tablet available and in the UK at least is a bargain at £299 or so. You'd pay a lot more for a lesser smartphone. Good thing is that Samsung seem to have finally woken up to this fact, and their next tablet releases look a lot more competitive price-wise. I'd still buy one now if I lost it though, purely due to how useful it is.
At OP check out my thread, where you can find it damn cheap
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
Hey! Like I said it's out of stock, but thanks anyway
I have had my Tab for a while now and I love it. If I were you I would look for one on craigslist and one made for Tmobile. I say Tmobile because wth them you can use the tab with out getting a contract. I have heard that the sprint and verizon tabs force u to activate there's. And the size to me is great, a 10 inch screen just seems to big, if I wanted one that size I would just get a netbook. I also have the keyboard for it and the media dock which works great. I bought the media dock and keyboard from verizon and they gave me a discount for buying two accesories at once, so I saved some money.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
And once again I said I live in France. No craiglist and no Tmobile!
But I am looking into phone networks here.
Found it cheap on priceminister ! Yay!
Also one last question, of the ways to make it faster and more responsive, installing the custom rom Overcome is the only solution right? I got confused when reading the development threads...what else can one do?
OCLF installs the market. 2240 points in quadrant. This course if you know what you're doing and take that risk.
Sorry for my english, google translate
OCLF is a waste of time if you are on an EXT4 ROM.
Personally, i'm not convinced it does much on RFS ROMs either, other than improve the incredibly flawed Quadrant benchmark scores.
Regards,
Dave
I still use mine all the time despite buying the xoom. Works best in the car and as alarm clock.

dont worry, you bought just the right phone root it, flash a recent 2.3.4 firmware, customize it and have the best value for money phone on the market today there are no kind of apps which really need a faster phone, dual core phones have a really small share of the user base, it will probably take at least 2 more years until they offer any benefit.
I'll give You one tip... be aware of flashing. Since I've bought mine i'm flashing few times a week I don't remember if some rom lasted for a whole week. Will see... Now I'm on galnet's miui and maybe this will be the first one
I had the desire for over 6 months and flashed it on day 1, so I'm no stranger to it and the damn addictiob. So far I am content with my curent setup.

My recommendations: Darky ROM 10.1 or Ryyu's EDB v1.3 ROM; Semaphore ,TalonDEV or DarkCore kernels!
What would be the most snazzy/beautiful ROM/widget combo out there?

Have to disagree with you there. It is not just in the benchmarks that the dual core makes a difference.
You are sadly mistaken, if you think that to be the case.. Just read up a bit, and you'll understand.
Remember when Intel C2D (Conroe) came? There were hardly any application making use of two cores, but still there was a significant advantage.. ~50-60% over similarly clocked single core processors. (not considering the architecture, which significantly increased the IPC). [ One of the reasons, why increasing the core-clock to around 1.44 GHZ, would be enough to somewhat offset the advantage of a dual core 1Ghz Tegra 2 process. But, if you think of it that way, even Tegra 2 can be clocked higher..]
That is because , even though a single application couldn't make use of two cores, a single application could make full use of the single core. (all background processes could run on single core). Thus ,effectively increasing the multitasking capability..(with more RAM like SGS2, it makes a huge difference!!).
And probably the most VFM Android phone in the higher end market is the Nexus S (despite its obvious shortcomings, like lack of HD video recording), imo..
i'd have to agree with Hrithan2020 that any dual core phone is definitely going to be significantly faster and responsive than any single core but i see dbraakers point too... since dual core phones are still so new, they really do have a small user base meaning that it will take some time for majority of the software developers to make programs and upgrades that utililize the dual cores full potential. i'm currently in the same situation, SGS vs LG O2x. O2x is only $25 more but SGS has a better dev community and is a lot more stable. i'm going to wait it out a bit to see if o2x community picks up. i wish i could go for the sgs2 (who wouldnt?) but i cant justify spending an extra $200-$300 for it when all that i'm mostly going to do is browse the web and send text messages. SGS would suffice but at $25 more, why not get the O2x?
Great analogy on the Intel C2D processors... but i dont think Dragooon made a bad choice cause the SGS is still a great, solid phone that will can hold its own over the next 2 years. budget is a factor for many of us so just because the latest intel i7-990x ($1100) is available, doesnt mean the i7-960 ($300) isnt still a good option that can satisfy the users needs. just my .02 cents =)

Great analogy on the Intel C2D processors... but i dont think Dragooon made a bad choice cause the SGS is still a great, solid phone that will can hold its own over the next 2 years. budget is
a factor for many of us so just because the latest intel i7-990x ($1100) is available, doesnt mean the i7-960 ($300) isnt still a good option that can satisfy the users needs. just my .02 cents =)

True. But, the difference between an SGS and SGS 2 , is not that high, is it? How much is it? 200$?. TBH, I have been itching to dump my SGS and buy SGS 2,but the form factor (more than the price) , helps to prevent my wallets from being empty ..
[ Two things, I am not satisfied about my SGS, GPS and low RAM, despite trying all fixes, would be significantly improved with SGS 2]
Also, particularly in the case of phones, the firmware makes a huge difference. (as can be noticed by the huge performance difference between the older eclair firmware vs the 2.2.1 froyo ones, for SGS). As it stands, O2X (stock) feels almost the same as SGS, in terms of responsiveness.. But, I am sure, some nice custom ROM's would help significantly widen the lead?
And, I feel that SGS's achilles heal is the low RAM, which the O2X also unfortunately shares. (330/340 vs 372 user available RAM).. You are right, in the sense, that there wouldn't be applications which would make use of the two cores fully; but better thread management by OS, could significantly help. [ ie. without applications being aware of the two/four cores, the OS would automatically spread the jobs over multiple cores.... which could probably be only in Android 4.0 or ICS] .. So, the days of single core are still not gone, but it won't be long before single core phones are pushed into the mid-end of the market..
(Nowadays,it is mostly near high end)..
Yes I know it isnt current but I am 16 year old student, so that 250$ is a big deal for me.

No, what I meant was that the extra 250$ it would've taken for me to get a SGSII is a big deal for me. I got my SGS for a 6 month old HTC Desire + 150$

Thought to update to new phone But sticking to GALAXY S

Yes , all the hypes about the new dual core phones, the tabs made me thought for the past month Its time to move alone.
IT has been last jan i have the galaxy s, I went through some readouts about samsung tab 1st.
It seemed the only handy size of the tab is the single core 7 inch, which is same as galaxy s, same price when i got the galaxy as new. so its a no go. I checked out the cheaper new one of tab 6200 , no go, I chked the 10 inche tab...its too big lol
Galaxy S 2 ? its twice the price what its delivering, So no samsung for me for now.
Ericsson? I chked RAY, ARC NEO ETc, donno what! lol all no goes.
HTC? Never used one , and dont feel like.
So i decided to stick to galaxy S cause none of the new phones are worth compared to upgrades and prices and the new MIUI ICS is kinda rocking with ma phone.
Let me know your thoughts.
Thanks
I'm with you dude, can't see the point in getting a sgs2 for a little more speed, I want my next phone to offer something different for the price, may be the sgs3 or something else. The sgs1 does everything I need and does it well, plus, smaller than sgs2 and better sound with voodoo. Now got great battery with 2540 mah battery and semaphore with smartassv2, loving it. Also remember that you learn more as you play, tune, test, flash. Many people using sgs2 just leave
It running in default mode

No doubt the SGS is still a powerful phone and will last many people at least another year.
BTW I also upgraded my SGS battery. I got the 1650Mah Samsung Armani battery which is the same physical size as the OG SGS stock, but gives me the extra juice I need to use my phone with even more moderate daily usage...

I love my SGS for every other reason except its RAM. This is bcz mostly i like playing games and due to low memory games stuck like hell. If it just had 768MB of ram, I would have never thought of upgrading. Anyway, still i have this machine and i am gonna keep it.

Low ram is compelling me to upgrade to SGS 2 or HTC Sensation XE !
A good decision, dude.
I will also stay with my Galaxy S, got it one year ago and still luv this phone more than anything. Ok, sgs2 has a more powerful cpu and gpu, but I actually dont play to much with my phone, only some small games like doodle jump, angry birds or Fruit Ninja THD
It has such a powerful gpu, that even the galaxy nexus uses it, ok, its version is clocked at 384mhz or so, but doesnt matter, it is one of the most powerful gpu solutions in the single-core world (is also used at 300mhz on the lg optimus 3d)
But in my opinion its the fault of gameloft and all the other developers, that the gaming performance is so f*ckin bad on our sgs.
On the iPhone 4 and iPad e.g. Asphalt 6 runs as fluid as hell, also fast and furious does. And both devices have a higher resolution, but a weaker gpu (PowerVR SGX535)
If the developers would code for the plattform instead of porting the whole stuff down from iOS, then all the hd-versions from iPad would run fluid on sgs and other devices. So thats the main reason, why we need a much more powerful hardware with android, to gain the same gaming expirience like on iOS-Devices.
B2T: Keep the phone as long as you can. It is solid made, a really scratch-resisent screen, awesome and it has imo the best size, I think that 4,3inch is just to big for a phone
BTW:
Why do you think all the american carreers release almost every second month a new phone based on the galaxy s. Sometimes with a 4,5inch screen like the infuse or with a keyboard like the sprints epic 4g and some other phones I dont remeber atm
So, have fun, dude
I stay with my I9000 too, it's still the best mix of cpu, gpu and durability for me. Regarding RAM I use the great Thunderbolt Tweaks and Semaphore kernel, which results in a very fast and stable SGS.

@angry_machine, Your decision is absolutely correct. I was also thinking to upgrade to SGSII, but after seeing it in a mobile market i changed my mind. NOthing much different. I bought my SGS last year in Oct, and it's the best phone I ever had. And I'm having no issues with it. Technology will never stop, so we should not change to every next model. Only change it when you really need. I Will stick to it until a change is must.
Voted 5-star because I feel the same.
I'm on the same boat, with all these powerhouse phones coming out I was really thinking about just buying a new phone outwidth my contract. My contract ends in August and I just think to myself, what kind of phones will be on the market by then? Tbh it's worth the wait.
do you hear about samsung galaxy note?

Pretty Decent Overall

So I really like this tablet I work at a cellphone repair store that is right across from best buy mobile there lead brought us one over to play with for the day. I thoroughly enjoyed testing this tablet out giving it for a good run. The graphics were awesome as expected, speed an digi's touch was smooth. hands down I like this now make me a 10.1

I wouldn't touch a 10.1 with this processor. Price to high and resolution of the screen is an enormous. Any less than the SD 800 clocked minimum 1.9 and I won't touch it. I would settle for 2 GB ram but I'd prefere 3. To many other tablets coming that have sweet new processors at close to the same price point
