Hello folks
Some high res games in the nexus does have frame drips or even lags
Such as Modern Combat 4
Or GTA maxed out
So do u think its a software or hardware problem...
To start off, I personally think that the high res screen that the nexus 10 has has a large impact on its performance

Its not the high res screen dude. Its the kernel. If its the high res screen the game wouldn't run smoothly for 15 secs then lag for 5 seconds.

In some cases it maybe but check the video in youtube of modern combat 4, overall it just stutters
But for GTA ur right maybe its kernel problem
My 2 cents

Glad someone brought this up. Mine lags in vice city at 80 PC resolution. N.o.v.a. 3 seems to be fine but stutters at times. I tried every benchmarking software out there and they all returned normal scores for the nexus 10. So I really don't know where the problem lies?
Mine starts to lag when the back of the unit gets too warm. Hoping the devs can fix it via kernel or custom rom. But so far though this is the best android tablet for gaming thus far. Gonna have to see though whats going to be released by others at CES next month. I may just return and hopefully they come out with tablets with quadcore exynos and slightly better gpu.

The MC4 N10 YouTube videos that I've seen are running the leaked MC4. The leaked version had Galaxy S3 specific settings (Edit: I'm wrong about this). The version that you can currently purchase on the N10 is way smoother than the leak. Unfortunately, I uninstalled the copy of MC4, but I suspect that if you open up the android manifest, you'd see different settings. The leak ran at native resolution (Edit: not positive about this). Based on the limited time I played on the N10, I think the production version on the N10 is running at 1/2 resolution, possibly with lower quality textures. It still looks and plays great, but the movement felt a bit "slushy" compared to the iPad version. I highly reccomend the game. The only reason I uninstalled is because I had 40 hours of multiplayer gameplay on the iOS version and was ranked around 300 with nearly all of the weapons purchased. Unfortunately when I log in on the N10 with the same Gameloft Live account, none of the multiplayer progress is carried over. It seems the Android players are on different servers, though I can confirm that WIFI/local multiplayer games are cross platform.
Edit: I'm completely wrong about the AndroidManifest.xml. Both specify xperia play optimized content and the same OpenGL ES version. I'm not sure where the changes are but, the production version plays pretty smooth. If you look at AndroidManifest files for other games, like Shadowgun Deadzone, you can see specifications for texture compression and things like that, but I don't see anything like that for MC4. Sorry for the mistake.

The Exynos 5 quad is supposed to first be paired with the Mali-T658 GPU, which is similar to ours but with twice as many cores and a few other better things. It also isnt supposed to be out for another couple quarters.

hey guys, im looking to buy the nexus 10, but it seems that the res, of the screen, makes some games lag, or is it down to the games not yet optimised?, not only that but, is is possible to force games to run at a lower res, ?
is it worth getting for gaming,?
thanks. amatris
I've had no problems with Nova 3, Shadow Gun, Shadow gun dead zone, Vice city, Deard Trigger, GTA 3, fruit ninja, Angry Birds and SuperGNES.
Which games have you been told lag?
I have to say, I've noticed lag on even simple games like Subway Surfer. In fact sometimes you lose because of the lag!
However I have also played Nova 3 and a couple of other high quality games and had no issues. Thinking it may be more settings based than tablet based!
NFS: MW is one of the games that drop frames pretty hard and is all because of the thermal throttle that the exynos 5 have.
Thanks for the reply guys, bit this id making me think tjat its not a good gaming tablet :-\ , is it still worth it?

A lot of the problems can actually be solved by slightly under volting the CPU. This reduces the thermal throttling.

Undervolting is all done through a custom kernel. Check out some of the threads in the dev sections and see if you're up for it. Or just install the Franco custom kernel and you won't have to adjust anything and gaming should be just great! :good:
Do not get this tablet if you want a tablet for gaming plain and simple. The tablet has a relatively weak GPU and massive screen resolution to power. Games like Dead Trigger will run fine on Low settings, but crank the settings to high and the game turns into a stuttering mess. Need for Speed Most Wanted has less graphical effects and details than the iPad version and yet also runs laggy and drops frames. Even something like Subway Surfers and Temple Run are laggy and have a delay when you swipe your finger.
Undervolting it does not help. Undervolting it merely makes it not throttle when it gets too hot. However, the throttling is not the only issue this tablet has with gaming. The GPU is not good enough for this display. You can notice it well enough when scrolling and watching text deform. This text deforming problem happened in the iPad 3 to a lesser degree and is completely absent in the iPad 2 and 4. (3 being that awkward middle retina child without a good enough GPU).
This tablet is great for media consumption but not for playing games.

An ipad if you want a gaming tablet. There really is no comparison to be honest for gaming.
Well I want to stick with android, I'm a big android fan and iv used the ipad, the first one that came out right up to the ipad mini and I have to say I don't like ios,
Any android ones you would recommend??

Its just hard to recommend anything other than the ipad if you want it primarily for gaming. The ipad has a significantly larger library with games that look and play better than anything we have. Look at the note 10.1.
Hmm ok ty, should I be looking at the tegra 3 gpu's for graphics and I'm guessing a quad core cpu?
Thanks amatris.
Edit: how would a Asus TFT300T Transformer? hold up? its at my very max on the price up to £350,

1.4GHz NVIDIA - Tegra 3 Quad-core processor.??

the Quad-core Mali T604 is fast as hell trust me
the problem is that it doesnt get enough CPU power to show off.
the stock settings for the CPU usage is set way to low!
one more thing that makes the games to lag is the up/down speed changes.
everytime the CPU changes its frequency you get lag.
if you have been into PC games you know that a fast GPU is depending alot on the CPU speed as well.
with the stock 1000mhz speeds that the CPU is using for games it wont max out the GPU.
the GPU screams for more CPU power.
the ONLY way to get games running smooth on the N10 is to LOCK the CPU speed at 1500 or 1700mhz.
but its one more problem and i think you know what it is
so to TS
dont judge the N10 for one bad optimized game(NFSMW) with stock ROM.
the games i have tried runs all at 60fps with max graphic settings.
but ok its not stock

just lock the Min/Max CPU speed at the same mhz and come back with a comment
Edit: just tried Subway Surfer with the Stock CPU Governor "Interactive" and stock speeds 200/1700 and it lags as you said.

My tablet is locked at 1700mhz and is laggy in every game I try except the playstation emulator and dead trigger on low settings. Subway surfers is still laggy and need for speed is unplayable. I am a pc gamer so im very sensitive to framerates. A good way to tell the gpu is lacking is by watching text deform as you scroll, a pretty classic sign of gpu performance I believe we have the fastest cpu on the tablet front. But a much weaker gpu than the ipad 4 and it shows in our gaming performance. Im not sure how you are getting these games to run at 60fps. Sre you sure it is 60fps? I know many console gamers see 26fps and think its smooth while I think its utter rubbish.

You're throttling.
Just wondering what makes more of a difference for games? I know the best would be clocking both but do I need to? I have always had an extremely over clocked PC for games and am fussy about smooth game play but didn't notice much lag in games with nexus. Battery use is also an issue.

Both of them. But gpu is a little bit more necessary for graphically intensive games.
Hi. I really love my i9505, it's a great phone with cool features and all, but there's one thing that's really annoying about this phone- games performance. Eg. when playing GTA San Andreas I have maximum 30FPS even on lowest settings. On Real Racing 3 the situation is similar. I thought Sanpdragon 600 and Adreno 320 is powerful enough to run this games like a charm and now i'm dissapointed. Are there any modofications for i9505 that may improve gaming experience? I've tried OC already but no result. The other this I cannot go more than 30 FPS in games, even on lowest settings and I don't know if it's my phone's fault or software bug. Currently I'm running on Jamal's GE 4.4.2 ROM and ktoonez kernel. What are your settings/roms/kernels for best gaming experience? Anyone help? Thanks in advance.
Kind regards

I too bought a S4 just three days ago. I knew that that the touchwiz-ui is laggy, it didn't bother me but I really thought the hardware would be good enough to run recent games lag-free. I was wrong.
Small games like subway surfers or temple run run smoothly but bigger games like Real Racing 3 lag and stutter. I am currently on stock rom with android 4.3, does it still lag with 4.4.2 google edition roms or aosp roms?

I did not have game performance issues with the 4.2 stock ROM back then, but IDK about stock 4.3.
Some AOSP-ROMs are slower in games than stock, others are faster. It also depends on the Kernel you are using of course.
A really fast ROM is broodplank's AOSP from source, you can find it in the i9505 original Android development thread. I am using it with broodplank's stock Kernel and changed some options via the broodparts-app.
I am very satisfied with its performance and stability, so you can give it a try. It is pure AOSP, though, so you lose all TW features. With XPOSED/Gravitybox, you can add some customizing features, which is enough for me. Some other features like iView and multiwindows are gone, but I don't really miss them.
But of course your requirements could be different, so you have to find out what's best suited for you by trying it out.
Same problem. Did anyone find a solution?
It seems like not a single game is optimized for this phone. Dead Trigger 2, Shadowgun DZ, Vice City, Most Wanted, RIptide GP2..... low fps and frame drops. Horrible.
Not to mention stuttering in games like ninja fruit and angry birds where it drops every couple of seconds to 50 or so.

27 fps average on NFS MW is far from smooth. The I9500 gets 40-60 fps.
Riptide GP2 is smooth when you lower the resolution but I expected it to run 30 and over on max res, but lower resolution isn't noticeable so it's ok.
Dead Trigger 2 and Shadowgun DZ run exactly the same, there are lag spikes every couple of seconds where it drops up to 10 frames, which is really bad. Take a look at the vid below, bad quality but you can kinda see the fps meter and how the frames drop from 30 to 24/23/21. Same thing with Dead trigger 2.
For example at 0:24 it drops from 30 to 22 and then quickly goes back up to 30.

You're not rooted so you can't check, but the fps meter confirms that what I'm seeing are indeed fps drops. Maybe you aren't noticing them, I just don't get how. It obviously lags and spoils your gaming experience...

Thermal throttling is something that is present in all phones afaik. Games lag on the I9505 when it's cool as well, as on the screenshots and video I posted. When it hits some temp over 50 or so everything lags even more but that's another topic.

Below is link to the Xposed module that disables DVFS, is that what you are referring to? It seems to solve the issue of the CPU throttling and seems essential if you're gaming a lot on your phone.

I don't see the point in dealing with thermal throttling when the phone drops frames even when it's cool.
Why some mid range games lag? Before I update the gpu and flash zip to optimize dalvic and bionic. They lag. It is tolerable for many but not for me. Also after I flash and zips and the gpu update still its lags. You dont have the smoothness that you expect in the Nexus 4 while playing. Games lime temple runs, and vector.
Btw Im all stock but rooted.
Thanks!!

It could be your kernel settings. Some games aren't optimized well. Despicable Me sometimes lags on Android but it's butter smooth on iOS, while a game like Subway surfers is very smooth on Android, lags like hell on all iPhones.
Optimisation...
There are only few games those are optimizated for Android, but the majority runs really bad! Look at games like The Walking Dead (Telltale), Android port is horrible than the iPhone one.

I still haven't tried GTA on my N4, All GTA games worked at 60fps on my ex-Note II, and it had a Mali 400 which i think is weaker than Adreno 320.

Ok then, but I doubt you maxed them. GTAs are very heavy and there is no device that can handle them maxed at 60 FPS for now, trust me.

Every benchmark admit that the Nexus 4 is much more powerful than Note 2 in gaming (http://www.phonearena.com/news/Benc...s-Optimus-G-Pro-vs-Nexus-4-vs-HTC-One_id41542).
I don't know, maybe it's the thermal trhottling, that's really really strange.

Most likely, all Qualcomm phones i had (from S1 to S4) were prone to heating. Exynos was cooler but many Samsung flagships (S2,S3,S4,NI,NII,NIII) have eMMC brick bugs...aka Sudden death syndrome...thats why i sold my Note, i was afraid it would stop working

I heard that... It isn't such a problem if you don't flash a ROM with the active bug (two summers ago Samsung relased a ROM with the comand to active the bug for S2, many devices died :\).
Anyway, I'm trying again GTA SA with my Nexus 4 (High settings, shadow med, low reflection, full resolution) and it goes at + or - 40 FPS, just saying...

Have you tried undervolting for less heat? I think 700uV for 184mhz and 1025uV for 1512mhz is the limit, anything under that is an instant crash
How did all of you knew the fps of every game you play? Haha

Just downloaded the fps meter and the result was I got average of 33fps playing despicable me and 58 fps avg. On subway surfers

Hey man. Does undevolting requires underclocking? Or does undervolting affects the performance or just fix the thermal throtling?

When I change kernel\ROM the first thing I do is setting Trickster, and I've a decent Undervoltage.
I have a nominal CPU and the limit for 1512, in my case, is only 10625. Anyway, I had problem with temperature with 4.2.2, but from 4.3 it got better and better

Absolutely not, uv and uc are different things. Undervolting doesn't fix thermal throtling, but minor voltage is equal at minor warm (Did i write it right?)

So sir the lesser the voltage the longer it will take the nexus to get hot? Or to throtlle?
